Life Enrichment Center hosts successful golf tournament By Amber Lowery T h e Life Enrichment Center brought community spirit, friendly competition, and a shared commitment to caregiving together during its recent golf tournament fundraiser, held as part of the organization’s ongoing Fund the Future Campaign. Golfers, sponsors, and supporters filled the course for a day dedicated not only to the sport, but to strengthening vital services for adults in need of day care. The day was made complete with contests, prizes, and opportunities to learn more about the mission behind the event. Life Enrichment Center Executive Director and staff members shared that funds

Pop Quiz (3rd Part of “Class in Session” Series) Do you remember pop quizzes? DANYALE You thought it was going PATTERSON to be another regular day at school. Suddenly, the teacher says, “Everything off your desk. It’s time for a pop quiz!” Uh-oh! Am I ready? Was it fair for the teacher to give me a test without telling me? Yes, of course. She had been teaching me, but the real question was, had I been learning the information she was giving me? Isn’t that how life is? Circumstances and problems come up in our lives that we were not expecting. An unreasonable boss, a problem with our finances, a disappointment, or some bad news can suddenly become our pop quiz. But how do we handle it? What does our response reveal about what we have learned? More importantly, what is the posture of our heart? Proverbs 17:3 (NLT) “Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the LORD tests the heart.” Cheat Sheet On a school test, you may feel like you are all alone, hoping everything works out and you pass. However, on the tests of life, we are not alone. The Holy Spirit is
there to comfort and guide us every step of the way. Jesus said in John 14:26 (ESV) “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” This is great news! We don’t have to figure everything out on our own. We don’t have to be overwhelmed by the test. The Holy Spirit is there to remind us of what Jesus taught us, guide us, and comfort us. The Real Test Maybe the real test is not simply what happened to us, but what comes out of us when it happens. Do we respond with love when someone offends us? Do we have peace when bad news comes? Can we demonstrate patience when things are not happening as quickly as we would like? Can we exercise self-control when we really want to say something? God wants to produce the fruit of the Spirit in us. Galatians 5:22-23 (AMP) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” LET’S PRAY Father, I praise you as the Ancient of Days. You have all the wisdom and knowledge. I ask that you
guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. When life happens, help me to lean on your Holy Spirit. Forgive me for complaining about the test. Help me to apply what you have taught me and respond in a way that pleases you. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen. CONNECTING TO GOD: If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Deer season is here. A few states have already opened, and the others are just around the corner. I am not prepared for this. I mean really, I am not prepared. I have put off hanging stands and setting up blinds. And I only have a few cameras out. The good news is that over the years my hunting habits have changed. I usually wait until late October before I get serious about getting into the woods. Of course, a GARY MILLER beast on camera will change that every time. But without that, I am satisfied to wait until cooler temperatures and greater odds of seeing a big buck. I will, however, get those cameras out, and stands up, this week. Hunting the same property for years cuts the preparation time down significantly. And just knowing more than I did several years ago helps me narrow down the details I need to get everything set up just the right way. I say all of this to say, I’m not panicking. I will lean on what I’ve learned from the skilled hunters who influenced me in the past. I think about those individuals a lot. Not only the individuals who influenced me in the hunting world, but those who influenced me in other areas of my life as well. Not all influence was good, but even that guides me to be and do things differently. Influence is something we carry with us wherever we go. Like purpose, influence is always our passenger. For a follower of Christ, it is not just something we acknowledge, it is something we are responsible for. Jesus said we are to be salt and light to the world around us. Concerning light, He said this. “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Paul and Peter also used the analogy of being a light. The point is this. While every person’s influence is automatic, for the Christian ours is to be intentional. If not understand correctly, this can be a heavy burden because the Christian is no less flawed than the non-Christian. However, the point is not to claim goodness as we do our good works, but to point to the One who gives us the reason to attempt them. We are not called to convince people we are good. We are called to live in such a way that even through our imperfections, people can see something of the goodness of God. Christian influence is not pretending we have it all together. It is allowing the way we live, fail, repent, love, forgive, and keep following Jesus, to point people beyond us to the One who influences us. Wildlife Habitat Restoration Efforts Underway at Two National Forests

Wildlife Agency Begins Executing 10-year Plan for Pisgah and Nantahala
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s (NCWRC) Helene Restoration Division (HRD) is developing its team and beginning to move forward with implementing its Hurricane Helene habitat restoration plan. The 10-year plan is funded through a partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to restore portions of the Pisgah and Nantahala national forests impacted by Hurricane Helene and other recent tropical storms. NCWRC created this new division last February following the signing of a Good Neighbor Agreement with the Forest Service. “It’s an enormous undertaking,” said NCWRC’s Helene Restoration Division Chief Doug Besler. “The area of impact from the hurricane on the National Forests is very large and impacts so much infrastructure and various aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems that it is daunting to try to determine an efficient way to address those impacts in areas that we have access to.” In late September 2024, remnants of a deadly storm, Hurricane Helene, slowly moved through western North Carolina, bringing days of torrential rain causing major flooding, land and mudslides, taking lives and decimating structures and wildlife habitats. The NCWRC entered into a wide-ranging agreement with the Forest Service that focuses efforts on infrastructure impacts, aquatic and terrestrial wildlife habitat restoration, species population monitoring and restoration, and re-establishing access for hunters, anglers and other wildlife users across both forests. “Until now, most of the work has been in
developing the agency team with the skills and knowledge needed for this kind of restoration work and ordering the equipment the teams will need to complete the projects,” said Besler. “We have spent a considerable amount of time coordinating with Forest Service staff and other cooperative partners to begin the assessment process which will define the critical projects. Although it is normal to want to jump into projects, the funding will only go so far given the scale and scope of impacts, so it is crucial that we are identifying the right projects in the right locations to be completed at the right time.” HRD is currently in an assessment and prioritization phase and initiated multiple projects that were previously identified. As an example, the first project completed by the HRD removed four damaged culverts on a USFS road on the Pisgah National Forest that blocked access to a wildlife opening and replaced those with stream ford crossings. “That single project opened up access to a previously inaccessible wildlife opening, created passage for a brook trout population, opened up hunter access and will now allow the treatment of non-native invasive plant species,” said Besler. “We look forward to working on many more of these important projects over the next decade.” Learn more about the HRD in the featured article from Wildlife in North Carolina magazine’s September/October edition. 1 tbsp olive oil 1 small onion, diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes 1 can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 3 cups vegetable broth 1 tsp dried oregano 1/2 tsp dried basil Salt & black pepper, to taste 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 1 cup spinach or kale Fresh basil, for garnish • Heat olive oil in a pot over medium heat. Sauté onion until soft, then add garlic and cook for 30 seconds. • Stir in crushed tomatoes, cannellini beans, vegetable broth, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. • Simmer for 15–20 minutes to develop flavor. • Add spinach or kale and cook until wilted. •Stir in parmesan cheese until melted and slightly creamy. • Garnish with fresh basil and serve warm.

Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes. • Add remaining ingredients. Cover with lid and simmer for 15 minutes. Serve with toppings of choice. Can also be simmered longer if desired, just stir occasionally. SLOW COOKER VS. • Place raw ground beef in the bottom of the crockpot and break up into small chunks (or if you prefer you can brown it). Add in all other ingredients except toppings and stir together. • Cover with lid and cook on high 4-6 hours or low 8-10 hours. Serve with desired toppings.

N.C. Forest Service reminds public of increased wildfire risk, urges caution with outdoor burning As fall wildfire season begins in North Carolina, the N.C. Forest Service is urging the public to take extra care with outdoor burning. Wildfire activity typically increases from October through early December, when falling leaves, dry vegetation and changing weather conditions can allow fires to spread quickly. “Most wildfires in this state are preventable,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Human activity continues to be responsible for more than 99% of wildfires in North Carolina, making individual actions one of our most important tools for preventing wildfires. Before you burn, take simple steps to keep your backyard fire in your backyard.” For safe burning practices to help prevent wildfire, the N.C. Forest Service offers the following guidance: CHECK.Check for burn bans or fire restrictions in your area. Check the weather. Never burn on dry or windy days. Make sure you have a valid burn permit. You can obtain a burn permit at any N.C. Forest Service office or authorized permitting agent, or online. PREPARE.Clear the area you intend to burn. Remove leaves, pine needles and other flammable material from around your burn area. Keep your fire small, not tall. Remember, it is illegal to burn anything other than natural vegetation. Be sure you are fully prepared before burning. Keep tools, a water source and a cell-
phone nearby. Never use kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel or other flammable liquids to speed up burning. STAY.Never leave your fire. Stay with it until it is completely out. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave. Drown, stir, drown, feel. Douse burning charcoal briquettes, campfires or burn piles thoroughly with water. Drown all embers, not just the red ones. When soaked, stir the coals and soak them again. Make sure everything is wet and that embers are cold to the touch. If you do not have water, mix enough dirt or sand with the embers to extinguish the fire, being careful not to bury the fire. Never dump hot ashes or coals into a wooded area. “For communities still recovering from Hurricane Helene, wildfire prevention remains especially important,” Troxler added. “Storm-damaged forests have additional fuel on the ground, making it even more critical to use caution when burning and to avoid activities that could spark a wildfire.” Outdoor burning isn’t the only way a wildfire can start. Remember these prevention tips: Use extreme caution when handling machinery and equipment that can create sparks or heat. Properly secure trailer chains so they don’t drag and throw sparks. Discard cigarette butts, matches and other flammable materials in appropriate containers. Use the N.C. Forest Service website to learn more about how to prepare for and prevent wildfires. JOE ALBERT HARTSELL Joe Albert Hartsell, 97, passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Born in Cabarrus County on July 22, 1929, he was the son of the late Walter Calvin Hartsell and Odessa Barbee Hartsell. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Crowley Hartsell; his son, Eric Carl Hartsell; his first wife, Beth Zimmerman Hartsell; his sister, Helen Hartsell Gray; and his infant twin children, Fred and Mary. Mr. Hartsell served our country in the U.S. Army National Guard and the United States Navy. Joe is survived by his daughters, Joyce Hartsell Hensley and husband Billy, and Jackie Crawley; his sons, Steve Crawley and David Crawley and wife Carolyn; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
