Home Away From Home: The Families Behind the Series
For many players arriving at the American Legion World Series, the journey to Shelby has already been a long one — regional tournaments, back-to-back bus rides, hotel rooms that blur together, and weeks away from home. By the time they reach Cleveland County, what these athletes need most isn’t another itinerary. It’s someone who feels like family. That’s exactly what they get.
For the Mid South Region team, that support starts with one woman: Ruth Huffstetler — known to every player and coach she’s served as Mama Ruth.
A member of the Shelby Breakfast Rotary host team, Huffstetler has made tournament week feel like home for years.
The ALWS host family program is one of the tournament’s most beloved traditions. Each competing team is paired with a dedicated host family, and these volunteers pour genuine heart into the role. They’re waiting at the hotel when buses pull in, signs in hand and voices loud. They fill players’ ALWS backpacks with snacks and goodies, delivered
“Being Mama Ruth is a highlight for me every year,” she says. “This is an honor for the coaches and players, and I get to be a part of it. Serving my team for all their needs is the greatest gift I can offer them for this historical event in their lives. I am the luckiest member of the team!”
The Rotary team’s approach is straightforward: whatever a player’s mom would do, they do it. That means cookouts, Cornhole competitions, and a host city welcome — but also PT appointments, dental emergencies, contact lens runs, and

Summertime hydration strategies
Summer is a season to spend outdoors soaking up some sun. But all that time outdoors can pose some health risks if people are not careful. The dangers of overexposure to the sun are well-documented. Sunburn is one such threat that can not only lead to discomfort, but also increase a person’s risk for skin cancer. But sunburn is easily prevented with the use of sunscreen, and that’s not the only summertime threat that’s easily avoided.
Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in. Come the dog days of summer, it’s easy to lose fluids when spending time outdoors. Sweating is one way to lose fluid on a hot day, but there are myriad ways to avoid dehydration once the hot weather kicks in.
• Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. According to NHS Inform, the national health information service of Scotland, thirst is typically the brain’s way of warning

individuals that they are dehydrated. So it’s unwise to wait until you’re thirsty to drink water. A proactive approach can help to prevent dehydration, especially when spending time outdoors on hot days.
• Take breaks for water. A midmorning coffee break or a midafternoon snack break are part of many people’s daily routines. You also can incorporate drinking water into your daily routine. When pouring your morning coffee or tea, pour yourself a glass of water as well. When reaching for a mid-afternoon snack, pour yourself another glass of water.
• Keep a water journal. Documenting your daily water intake is one way to overcome forgetfulness in relation to remaining hydrated. Smartphone apps like Water Reminder and Plant Nanny can help people remember to drink water throughout the day. For those who prefer a more traditional approach to journaling, keep a small notebook near your desk or in your pocket when going outdoors so you can always know when your most recent water break occurred.
• Look to foods to stay hydrated. Drinking water isn’t the only way to ensure you stay hydrated. Various foods are loaded with water.
Henry Ford Health® notes that watermelon, berries, bell peppers, and grapes are water-rich foods that can help you stay hydrated. Dehydration can creep up on hot summer days and put people in serious jeopardy. That’s why it’s imperative that people make a concerted effort to hydrate and do not wait until they’re thirsty to enjoy a glass of water on a hot summer day.

At least once a year I fish the Powell River with my friend, Michael. We live about an hour from each other, so these trips are planned a few weeks in advance. Our preferred way of fishing is with light tackle in kayaks. We both love everything the river offers. The Powell is a small river, and while there are some larger smallmouth bass, most of our trophies measure less than 15 inches. But the fight they put up, combined with the pull of the current, gives us plenty of thrills and hours of enjoyment. I am new to the river compared to Michael. My river fishing started only about 15 years ago. Michael’s began when he was a child with his dad and brother. Every time we go, I hear stories and lessons from those days on the river. Ed (his dad) was a local postal worker who spent his spare time floating from one stretch of river to the other. He knew every place to put in and take out. Of course he had his favorite bait. And back then, it wasn’t kayaks, but Jon boats. A mess of redeyes was as good as any meal you could buy at the local grocery store. While I knew Michael and his whole family as a teenager, I never knew the priorities of his dad. What I’ve learned from our fishing trips is that Ed had a great sense of what was truly valuable. And what he valued most was what money couldn’t buy. I learned this after hearing story after story about how the river would sometimes swallow rods, reels, and anchors. Not to mention glasses, knives, and other tackle. While Ed and the boys had to learn to “deep-seadive” to try to retrieve these things when lost, Ed would eventually remind them that they were just that. Things. Replaceable things. There is nothing – no thing- that can trump the value of time on the river, especially the ones with your sons. Rods will be broken. Reels will be lost. The river will claim whatever isn’t tied down. But the value of those memories will never diminish. In fact, with each passing year, they will become more valuable. How do I know? I hear it in every story Michael tells. I hope the things you value can’t be bought, bent, or broken. I hope they’re found in experiences, adventures, and people – maybe even in the moments that involve losing or breaking those things that were, after all, only things.

Safety first at the beach
When the sun is shining and the temperature is warm, a day at the beach can be the perfect balm for whatever ails you. Is it any wonder that so many vacations or day-long excursions revolve around spending time at the shore?
Although a beach excursion can be the ideal way to rest and recharge, indi-
viduals should be mindful that there is the potential for some danger. Safety is essential when visiting coastal locations. The following are some safety hazards to keep in mind and how to navigate them.
Rip currents
Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water that flow away from the
shore. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration notes rip currents can occur at any beach. Lifeguards call rip currents “drowning machines” since they are implicated in most water rescues. They are very dangerous for weak or non-swimmers because they can pull people away from the shore rapidly. If a person gets caught in a rip

current, it is important to swim parallel to the shore until escaping the current. Only then can the person try to get back to the beach.
Hookworms
There is a reason why companion animals may not be allowed on the beach during the swimming season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says hookworm is a parasitic infection contracted when larvae in sand or soil contaminated by animal feces burrow into exposed skin. It is common in moist, warm climates. Keeping cats and dogs away from the beach, wearing sandals, and using beach mats or towels when on the sand can help prevent hookworm contraction.
Jellyfish
Jellyfish can be a wonder to behold, but crossing paths with a jellyfish can be a painful experience. The National History Museum says jellyfish have survived for more than 500 million years. These invertebrates are gelatinous and jelly-like, with a curved, bell-shaped body with tentacles hanging down. The tentacles can be covered in stinging cells called cnidocytes. Beach-goers should heed warnings about jel-
lyfish in the water, but also be mindful of ones washed up as they can still sting if the tentacles are wet.
Sand fleas
Despite the word “flea” in the moniker, sand fleas are not insects or parasites. Terminix says they are small, shrimp-like crustaceans. While sand fleas do not seek out people to bite them, certain species can leave itchy, red welts if they come into prolonged contact with the skin. This may be more pronounced for women or girls when sand fleas become trapped between swimsuits and the skin. Sand fleas are more active during cooler, low-light periods like early morning or evening.
Glass beverage containers should not be brought to the beach, as there is the risk of breakage and shards becoming left behind. Cuts from broken bottles can lead to infection. Beach-goers also need to be mindful of other debris that can wash up on the beach, particularly after strong storms. Unfortunately, medical waste, trash, and drug paraphernalia can wash up on the shore. Wearing sandals or water-safe shoes can protect feet.
A carefree day at the beach is a staple of summertime. However, people must be mindful of potential hazards when enjoying a day at the beach.

SALISBURY STEAK WITH MUSHROOMS
1 lb. lean ground beef
1/3 cup dry bread crumbs
1/4 cup chopped onions
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 cups beef broth
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 cup sliced mushrooms
3 tablespoons cornstarch
3 tablespoons water
• Combine ground beef, bread crumbs, chopped onion, egg, salt, and black pepper in a bowl until evenly mixed. Shape beef mixture into 4 patties, about 3/4 inch thick.
• Fry patties in a large skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides, about 10 minutes. Add beef broth, onion, and mushrooms; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer until patties are no longer pink in the center, about 10 minutes more. Transfer patties to a platter and keep warm.
• Bring onion mixture to a boil. Mix cornstarch and water in a small bowl; stir into onion mixture. Cook and stir until onion gravy is thickened, about 1 minute. Pour over patties to serve.
CHICKEN MARSALA
1 cup uncooked white rice
2 cups water
1 cup all-purpose flour salt to taste black pepper to taste
1 pinch dried oregano
1 lb. skinless, boneless chicken cutlets, pounded to 1/4-inch thickness
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 TBSP. butter, divided
1 clove garlic, minced
1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
1/2 cup Marsala wine
1/2 cup chicken stock
• Bring the rice and water
to a boil in a saucepan over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until the rice is tender, and the liquid has been absorbed, 20 to 25 minutes. Set rice aside.
• In a large bowl, whisk the flour with salt, black pepper, and oregano. Gently press the chicken breasts into the flour mixture to coat, and shake off the excess flour.
• Heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Arrange the chicken in the skillet and cook until the chicken is no longer pink inside and golden brown outside, 5 to 8 minutes per side. Drain the cooked chicken on a paper towel-lined plate.
• Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon butter in the same skillet over medium heat while scraping up any brown bits with a spoon. Stir in the garlic; cook and stir until fragrant. Add the mushrooms, and cook and stir until they are tender and have released their liquid, about 10 minutes. Season with salt and black pepper, then stir in the Marsala wine and chicken stock.
• Transfer the chicken back to the skillet, and spoon sauce over chicken pieces. Increase heat to mediumhigh, and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer until the the sauce is thickened, about 5 minutes more. Serve the chicken and sauce over the cooked rice.

CASSEROLE
4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
1 pound broccoli florets, cooked
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup 1 TBSP. mayonnaise 1 cup shredded Cheddar
cheese
1 cup dry stuffing mix
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
• Boil chicken until tender and shred or cut into bite size pieces. Meanwhile, steam broccoli until crisp but tender.
• In a small bowl mix together the soup and mayonnaise. Set aside. In a 9x13 inch baking dish layer the chicken, broccoli, soup mixture, and cheese. Sprinkle dry stuffing mix over the top and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes.
TORTILLA
CASSEROLE
12 (6 inch) corn tortillas 2/3 cup chopped green onions
1 (4 oz.) can sliced black olives, drained 2 (4 ounce) cans diced green chile peppers, drained
1 (4 oz.) jar diced pimento peppers, drained 8 oz. Monterey Jack cheese, shredded 8 oz. Cheddar cheese, shredded
5 eggs
2 cups milk
1 (8 oz.) jar salsa
• Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Line the bottom of the dish with 4 tortillas. Sprinkle with 1/3 each of the green onions, olives, chile peppers, pimento peppers, Monterey Jack cheese, and Cheddar cheese. Repeat twice with the remaining ingredients.
• In a large bowl, beat together eggs, milk, and salsa. Pour over the layered ingredients. Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight.
• Remove the casserole from refrigerator, and remove plastic wrap. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
• Bake 45 to 60 minutes in the preheated oven.

• Boil chicken without any salt. Cut into bite size pieces. (You may substitute with 2 small rotissiere chickens).
•Melt butter, stir in corn bread stuffing into butter and mix well.

• Put layer of corn bread mix into bottom of 9x13 casserole, a layer of chicken, a layer of soup sauce. Then repeat layers, leaving the top layer of corn bread mix without the soup mix. Cook for 1 hour in 350 degree preheated oven.

School Supplies
It’s that time of year again. Students are preparing to head back to school, and parents are busy shopping for notebooks, pencils, folders, and other school supplies. One of the most important items on the list is a backpack. A backpack is designed to carry everything a student needs throughout the school day. Instead of struggling to hold heavy books and supplies in their arms, students can place everything in one bag and carry it with much greater ease. Imagine trying to carry every textbook, notebook, pencil case, and lunchbox without a backpack. Before long, something would fall to the ground, your arms would become exhausted, and you would be so focused on holding everything together that you would miss what was happening around you. Many of us are doing the same thing spiritually. Instead of carrying school supplies, we’re carrying worry, fear, disappointment, financial pressures, family concerns, health challenges, and unanswered questions. We try to hold it all together, convinced that if we just try harder, we’ll eventually figure everything out. But the weight becomes overwhelming. Jesus offers us a better way. In Matthew 11:28 (NLT), He lovingly invites us, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

Put It in the Bag
God is asking us to hand him our burdens. Sometimes pride convinces us that we should be able to handle everything on our own. We hesitate to ask for help or surrender our problems because we think we have to fix them ourselves. The result is often stress, irritability, anxiety, and exhaustion. Our bodies even respond to the emotional weight we carry. Chronic stress can contribute to headaches, difficulty sleeping, high blood pressure, and other health concerns. While we cannot avoid every challenge in life, we can choose not to carry them alone.
Psalm 55:22 (AMP) reminds us, “Cast your burden on the LORD [release it] and He will sustain and uphold you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.” So how do we cast our burdens on the Lord?
We begin with prayer. Tell him exactly what is weighing on your heart. Say, “Lord, I give this situation to you. I release it into your hands, and I choose to trust you instead of worrying.”
When anxious thoughts return, don’t pick the burden back up. Instead, thank God that he is already at work. Remind yourself of his goodness, his faithfulness, and his power by meditating on his Word. If you’re facing sickness, meditate on healing scriptures. If you’re struggling financially, focus on God’s promises to provide. Fill your mind with God’s truth rather than your fears.
The Lord never intended for you to carry life’s heavy loads
Let’s Pray Lord, you are a great and mighty God. I praise Your holy name. My heart, mind, and
strength were never designed to carry every burden life brings. Forgive me for trying to do what only you can do. Today, I release my worries, fears, and problems into your hands. Fill me with your peace and help me trust that you are working in every situation, even when I cannot see it. Thank You for loving me, caring for me, and carrying what I cannot. I love you. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.
