Shelby’s Mark Folk is helping men navigate the wilderness of life By Alan Hodge Life these days can be like deep woods or a trackless desert. That is, a real challenge to navigate and stay on a course that gets you to the other end in one piece, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Realizing this about 25 years ago, Shelby businessman and outdoor enthusiast Mark Folk came up an idea to tackle that thorny quandary and founded the nonprofit New Wilderness Adventures, a service that takes guys out in the literal wilderness and teaches them how to survive in the figurative one of modern life through a closer walk with God. “Our modern wilderness includes challenges such as career pressures, questions about purpose, family struggles, and isolation,” Folk says. “No man should walk the wilderness alone.”

epiphany. The next year I led a trip to the Grand Canyon and God told me this was what I was made for. The idea for New Wilderness Adventures took off from there.” Trips that New Wilderness Adventures embark on include hiking, fishing, hunting, scuba, kayaking, scuba, and more. In other words, just about anything exciting and outdoors. Participants are an eclectic blend. “They come from any walk of life,” Folk says. “We have men ranging from business types to welders.” The range of New Wilderness Adventures excursions spans the nation. “We take trips from Florida to Alaska,” said Folk. Since its launch a quarter century ago, New Wilderness Adventures has grown. These days, there are branches in Texas and Colorado. Grand Lakes. First Baptist Church Shelby Weekday Ministries Celebrates 50 Years

On Sunday, August 23rd, First Baptist Church of Shelby will celebrate fifty years of Weekday Ministries to countless children and families in Shelby and Cleveland County. On August 23, 1976, with the blessing and commitment of the First Baptist congregation, the doors of First Baptist Child Center were opened with four dedicated staffCarol Ball, director; Ann Pharr, teacher; Karen Pearson, teacher; and Iris Maloney, teacher. These original teachers were advised and challenged to “always keep their eyes on Christ and the child care facility of First Baptist Church would always have the reputation for being a great place for children.” With that wise advice in mind, First Baptist Church Weekday Ministries opened with two classrooms. Currently, the Weekday Ministries program offers full day care for infants through Pre-K and Mother’s Morning

Out, which offers a halfday program for Toddlers through Pre-K. In 1997, the First Baptist Church Child Care Center became the first AA licensed Church-sponsored child care center in the county. With the revision of the licensing system in 2005, the program became the county’s first 4-star church sponsored child care center and still holds a 4- star license. Under the current leadership of Mrs. Penny Corn for the past 26 years, the success and longevity of the child care program would be impossible without the prayerful support and guidance of the FBC membership and the long history of dedicated staff. Providing care for 11 hours per day, 5 days per week, 51 weeks out of the year is no small task. Throughout these fifty years, the staff and congregation have remained steadfast to their commitment to high quality Christian early care and education.
First Baptist Weekday Ministries has served multiple generations over the years. The “early children” have blessed the ministry with the opportunity to care for and nurture their children and even grandchildren. Fifty years of caring for and nurturing children holds vast memories of hugs, smiles, giggles and a few scraped knees and challenges. The programs have launched children into their futures that cover a broad spectrum of professions and into locations across the globe. Striving to rise to the original challenge in 1976, “always keep your eyes on Christ” and looking to Him for guidance, First Baptist Church Weekday Ministries believes that children are gifts from God. It is an honor to have been blessed these 50 years to partner with families and the community is loving, teaching, and growing young children. The morning worship

As a young teenager, many of my summer days were spent fishing at the local canal. I remember the unique art of catching carp using whole kernel corn as bait. I also remember the little country store where I bought that corn. What I remember most about that place, however, was not my corn purchases but my candy ones. Edna owned the store and she had a candy counter that was stra- GARY MILLER tegically placed just to one’s left as soon as you walked in. The glass front was positioned low enough for the smallest young’un’ to press his nose against and carefully decide just what sugary morsel he would purchase on that day. The patience of Edna had to be God-like. After all, there were a whole bunch of us youngsters that stood in line to make life-altering selections. And while those memories are special, there is still one more that exceeds the selection stage. It was postpurchase loitering. I can remember sitting on the front porch of Edna’s store with my Coke and candy. And I can still remember the wonderful cool sensation that I felt down my back when I would lay down on that smooth concrete during the summer. The Coke, candy, and concrete made for the best recovery after a morning of fishing or baseball. I’m glad she never ran us off. Her hospitality and patience were always taken for granted until we were old enough to realize how special it really was. That’s the way most of life is. Rarely do we see the value in people or their actions until time has passed. This is especially true for the virtues that lack fanfare. Kindness, hospitality, and patience are naturally provided without pomp. They are abstract and bodiless and thus are lost most of the time in the shadow of more tangible acts. It is only as we pause and look back do we recall these quiet gestures that now stand out as monuments. If you can recall these moments maybe it is important that you make some of your own – to those who may not appreciate them until later. Kindness, hospitality, and patience are like the pocket change I once handed to Edna. It not only buys me initial satisfaction, but it also builds a porch for those who need a cool place to rest and recover. And everyone needs that. Cleveland Community College Foundation Receives $34,000 Gift to Establish Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship Scholarship honors the legacy of paramedic Mary Elizabeth Jolly and supports future EMS professionals.

The Cleveland Community College Foundation has received a $34,000 donation from the Jolly Good Samaritan Scholarship LLC to establish the Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship, dedicated to supporting students enrolled in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs at Cleveland Community College. The gift includes a $30,000 endowed contribution to create the scholarship fund and an additional $4,000 in spendable funds, allowing scholarship awards to begin during the 202627 academic year. The scholarship honors the life and legacy of Mary Elizabeth Jolly, a CCC-trained paramedic whose commitment to serving others continues to inspire her family, friends, and colleagues. Jolly worked with Gaston County Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) from 2021 until her death in 2025. Known for her compassion, professionalism, and dedication to protecting others, she served on the department's swift water rescue team and received numerous recognitions throughout her career, including B-Shift Outstanding Paramedic in 2023 and B-Shift Excellence in Operational Readiness in 2025. In 2026, she was posthumously awarded the Gaston County Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, which will be named the Mary Jolly Distinguished Service Award going forward. Jolly's final act reflected the selfless spirit by which she lived. After stopping to assist another driver involved in an accident on Interstate 95 in Florida, she suffered fatal injuries while rendering aid. The scholarship was created by Jolly’s family to honor her memory and ensure her commitment to serving others continues through future generations of emergency medical professionals. The Jolly family provided this message about why they are establishing this scholarship: “Mary’s story is not the tragedy of how her life ended; it is the example of how she chose to live. She was selfless, brave, caring, and loving, with the biggest heart—only God knew how it fit into her tiny body. “Mary loved being a paramedic. She was the person to show up on someone’s worst day and make it better. She was the calm in a chaotic situation. From helping someone with a cardiac arrest, assisting a woman in labor and delivering their baby into this world, or just simply spending a few extra minutes to settle a nervous elderly patient back home, Mary brought calm and comfort to those around her. She was the quietest person in a room with the loudest presence, a little ray of sunshine that touched so many. “We are establishing the Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship, in partnership with CCC, with the goal of giving future EMS students the opportunity to carry that same spirit of service forward. The world needs more people willing to show up for others simply because it is the right thing to do.
We need more Marys. If this scholarship helps even one student become that person for someone else, then a piece of Mary’s legacy continues with every life they touch. “Once a paramedic, always a paramedic, on or off duty. On her last call, while she was off duty and out of state, Mary did not hesitate to render assistance. She just did what she loved to do, help someone in need even in a dangerous situation. “God has her in his keeping; we will always have her in our hearts.” Through the Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship, her legacy will live on by providing financial assistance to students enrolled in EMS programs at CCC, with preference given to those pursuing Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) and Paramedic credentials. Applicants will be asked to share, through a written statement or video, what caring for others means to them, a reflection of the qualities Jolly demonstrated throughout her life and career. “There are few professions that require the level of courage and compassion demanded of EMS personnel,” said Jason Hurst, president of CCC. “Mary Jolly lived those values every day and ultimately gave her life while helping someone else. The Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship is a fitting tribute to her legacy, creating opportunities for future EMS professionals who share her commitment to serving others and our community.” Through the establishment of the scholarship, the Jolly family hopes to invest in the next generation of emergency service personnel who will serve and protect communities throughout the region. CCC Foundation Executive Director, Grayson Pierce, noted, "The CCC Foundation is so grateful to the Jolly family for their vision and generosity in creating the Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship not only honors Mary Jolly but invests in future EMS professionals who will continue the important work of caring for and protecting our communities.” The scholarship will be administered by the Cleveland Community College Foundation and awarded annually in accordance with the CCC Foundation policies and scholarship selection procedures. Community Invited to Observe International Overdose Awareness Day in Shelby SHELBY, NC – Community members are invited to join local organizations in recognizing International Overdose Awareness Day on Monday, August 31, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Totally Free Clothes and Thrifty Thrift Store, located at 318 Gidney Street, Shelby, NC. This free community event is open to everyone and is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives to overdose, supporting individuals and families affected by substance use, and raising awareness about overdose prevention and recovery resources. The event will feature guest speakers, community resource information, free food, door prizes, naloxone training, a remembrance wall, and a moment of silence to honor the lives lost to overdose. Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with local organizations offering prevention, treatment, recovery, and support services. International Overdose Awareness Day is observed around the world to reduce the stigma surrounding substance use and overdose, remember those who have died, and encourage action that helps save lives. "This event is an opportunity to bring our community together in hope and remembrance," organizers said. How to minimize distractions during study time Digital technology may have impacted life for the better in many ways, but the same devices that educate, entertain and connect users can distract students at every turn. According to a 2026 study on the habits of highly effective students published on Research.com, students are distracted for roughly 35 percent of their total study time on average. But smartphones, tablets and gaming systems are not the only distractions that students face. Learning to turn attention away from distractions is a key to a successful study session. Here are some ways to manage distractions while studying for academic success. • Gatekeep digital distractions. Students can move their phones entirely out of arm’s reach or into another room while studying. When studying on tablets or laptops, students can use software to disable
non-academic platforms so they’re not tempted to check social media or browse the internet. • Avoid cognitive fatigue. Study blocks should be a maximum of two hours per course before switching subjects to keep the mind fresh. Trying to maintain intense concentration for hours on end often ends with attention waning and the brain seeking other stimuli. • Study during the day. People naturally get tired after dark, which means moving study times to daylight hours may lead to greater success. • Set aside a dedicated study area. Students should establish a consistent, quiet and remote study spot that is physically separated from visual and auditory disruptions. Also, a study area should be separate from relaxation spots so the brain automatically switches to focus on the task at hand. • Advise others not to disturb.
Students can establish boundaries with roommates or family members to ensure study sessions are not interrupted. Ask roommates or family members to avoid a designated study area and to silence phone notifications and alerts. • Quiet the environment. Some students prefer complete silence for studying, and can benefit from noisecanceling headphones. Others may prefer ambient noise or instrumental music to drown out background noise. • Build in breaks. Study sessions can be broken up with breaks to provide a change of scenery and also to grab snacks and beverages or make a trip to the restroom. Minimizing distractions while studying requires students to determine what works for them in a study environment. Additional measures to reduce external stimuli also may need to be implemented.

2 fresh corn cobs 1 jalapeno pepper 1 cup mayonnaise 4 tablespoons fresh lime juice 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro leaves 1/4 tsp. garlic powder 1/4 tsp. chili powder 1/4 tsp. paprika 4 cups shredded grilled chicken breast 1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions 6 soft rolls, split 1/3 cup Cotija cheese Tajin seasoning, to taste
• Prepare grill for medium direct heat. Add corn; cover and cook until lightly browned and tender, 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally. During the last three minutes, add jalapeno, rotating until all sides are blistered and blackened. Remove corn and pepper to a cutting board. Cool slightly, cut corn from cobs. Remove stem and seeds from jalapeno; roughly chop. • In a large bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, lime juice, cilantro, garlic powder, chili powder and paprika. Add chicken, green onions, grilled corn and jalapeno; toss to coat. • Divide mixture over roll bottoms. Sprinkle with Cotija cheese and Tajin seasoning; replace roll tops.
Angela Brooks to lead Pinnacle Classical Academy The board of directors of Pinnacle Classical Academy announces that headmaster Angela Brooks will become the school's leader on September 1, with the retirement of CEO Dr. Shelly Shope. Angela Brooks began her teaching career in 2004 after graduating as a North Carolina Teaching Fellow from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She started in education as a high school social studies teacher at North Gaston High School, where she was honored as Teacher of the Year. In 2013, she joined the founding faculty of Pinnacle Classical Academy, where she played a key role in shaping the school’s academic foundation. While teaching middle school math and social studies, Mrs. Brooks earned her master's degree in executive leadership studies from Gardner-Webb University in 2017. A school administrator since 2017, Brooks was named dean of secondary education in 2020 and headmaster in 2025. "The Board of Directors recognizes Mrs. Brooks as one of the
