Unique new attraction in KM: The Nutcracker Museum

Nathan and Madonna Martin have announced the opening of the Nutcracker Museum, a delightful new destination at 210 S. Piedmont Avenue in downtown Kings Mountain.

The Museum opened on Friday, June 27.

This vibrant venture, brought to life by Nathan and Madonna Martin, showcases an extraordinary collection of nutcrackers with a heartwarming backstory.

This nutcracker journey began with Margaret Cook, who had a passion for collecting nutcrackers as a tribute to military personnel, police officers, and first responders. Starting her collection around 2012, Margaret aimed to honor the military service of her family members during World War II. Her

passion for nutcrackers caught the attention of her son, Dr. Mark Cook, who often shopped with her. It didn’t take long before he became a collector, too.

After Margaret’s passing in June 2019, Dr. Cook took on the task of preserving her collection, cleaning and repairing the cherished nutcrackers, and expanding the collection even further. Now, thanks to Nathan and Madonna, their hard work over the past eight months has transformed 80 – 45-gallon totes of nutcrackers into a captivating display. Visitors can explore what might one of the largest collections in the Southeast, featuring themes from military heroes to whimsical characters from Disney and beyond! Protected behind plexiglass in a climate-controlled setting, they will

“Every corner in the museum has something unique waiting to be discovered,” says Madonna. “From a limitededition Steinbeck Pope Leo nutcracker to three President Trump figures, there’s truly something for everyone. We have Superheroes, Disney, holiday-themed, patriotic, and presidents… this is just the beginning. We have barely scratched the surface of this collection, and we are already planning the next exhibit.”

The Nutcracker Museum will be open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is affordable and perfect for families: free for children under two, just $3 for kids aged 3 to 11, and only $5 for adults.

True Freedom

(Part 2 of “Freedom in Christ” Series)

We often hear about freedom in the world: freedom to choose, freedom to express ourselves, freedom from oppression. But true freedom goes much deeper—it’s about being free in Christ. So, what does that really mean? Well, at its core, spiritual freedom is the liberty from sin, guilt, shame, and anything that keeps us bound or held back from living the abundant life Jesus promised. It’s about being rescued from the power of darkness.

Colossians 1:13 (NLT) reminds us, “For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son.” Jesus came to save us from the grip of sin and evil, and through Him, we are transferred into a new kingdom—one of love, grace, and freedom.

I Have Purpose

But true freedom isn’t just about being free from something—it’s also about being free for something great. Romans 6:22 (NLT) says, “But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things

that lead to holiness and result in eternal life.” Our freedom empowers us to be victorious and a conduit of God’s love because we’re walking in God’s plan. And here’s the best part—our salvation and freedom are gifts from God.” Ephesians 2:8-9 (NLT) affirms, “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.” Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” We didn’t earn our freedom; Jesus freely gave it to us out of His love.

I Am Loved

Another aspect of true spiritual freedom is being fully persuaded that we are completely loved and accepted by God. Sometimes we start feeling guilty about the messiness of our past or we strive to do a bunch of religious activities to get the Lord to accept us. Acceptance through works is bondage. True freedom which is to be fully loved and accepted by our Heavenly Father, even when we fall short of his glory.

Romans 5:8 (AMP) says, “But God clearly shows and proves His own love for us, by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Yes, we should ask forgiveness and

follow his ways, but not out of a religious obligation but a loving desire to remove anything that hinders an intimate relationship with the Lord. When we understand what true freedom in Christ looks like, our lives become a powerful testimony of His grace and mercy.

Let’s Pray: Lord, thank you for spiritual freedom. Your love for me is extravagant. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is your love for me. Forgive me for my sin and for doubting your love, because of my sin. Help me to understand how wide, how long, how high, and how deep your love is so I can continually walk in freedom. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shal be saved. Romans 10:9

I rose early that morning, slightly before the alarm went off on my iPhone 16. I slipped quietly into my Eddie Bauer flip flops and headed to my Kohler commode. The Phillips 60-watt, 130-volt light bulb worked perfectly. After fixing my Martha White, self- rising, blueberry muffins, I headed downstairs. There in my Rubbermaid container were the clothes I would choose for my morning hunt. First, my Life is Good “essentials” and then a base layer of wicking garments overlayed by my Kryptek Camo, I shed my Eddie Bauers and donned my Lacrosse, 500-gram Burley boots. I grabbed a snack and a drink and stuffed them into my Cabela’s backpack. I drove frantically in my Toyota Tundra, but I knew I was safe thanks to my 20-inch Nitto Grappler tires. After stopping at Hardees for my cup of coffee, I finally arrived at the farm I would hunt that morning. After listening to the weather report on the Weather Channel App, I knew it would be a great day. It didn’t take long to find the tree I would climb. I wrapped my API Grand Slam Magnum treestand around its base and slowly ascended while moving my Hunter Specialty safety harness up as I went.

Once there, I checked my PSE bow, careful to give extra attention to my Trophy Taker drop away rest and fiber optics sight. It wasn’t long before I heard the rustle of leaves. I raised my Vortex 8 x 42 binoculars and, sure enough, a deer was approaching. I aimed my Bushnell 500 Range Finder and marked a 25-yard shot. When the deer passed by, I launched my 400-gram Easton Carbon arrow. The deer fell. I spent the next 30 minutes in that tree stand eating my Little Debbie cake and drinking my Cumberland Gap water thinking how wonderful it is to have the opportunity to be able to enjoy hunting just as my forefathers did.

I would like to thank all of my sponsors who gladly sell their stuff to Wal-Mart and other fine department stores, so I can buy them there. I would also like to say hi to all the people who have made me the hunter I am. And of course, I want to give thanks to God for giving me the ability to do what I do –along with my pit-crew.
