Kings Mountain High’s Miriam Izbicki-Wilson taught incredible class on the Holocaust

School may be over for this year, but the lessons KMHS students learned in Miriam IzbickiWilson’s class on the Holocaust will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
If anyone’s qualified to teach a class on the Holocaust, IzbickiWilson is it. That’s because, in addition to being an innovative educator, she has a unique link to the Holocaust of WWII that saw the Nazis kill 6 million Jews.
“My connection to Holocaust education is very personal to me and to my family,” she says. “My grandfather from Lodz, Poland, was a Holocaust survivor who lost his first family at the hands of the Nazis during World War II. He survived imprisonment and was eventually liberated from Ebensee concentration camp.”
Ebensee was a forced labor camp in the Austrian mountains. People sent there were made to dig tunnels where the Nazis planned to build V2 rockets. The camp was liberated in May, 1945 by the U.S. Army.
“After the war, he spent time in displaced persons camps in Austria and later Italy before immigrating to the United States with his wife, my grandmother Rosa, along with my father Hyman Uzbicki-Wilson said. “The family first spent time in Chicago before eventually settling in Sioux City, Iowa.”
Even though she was just 11 years old when her grandfather died in Sioux City, his story found a place in her heart.
“Growing up, my grandfather almost never talked about what happened to him during the Holocaust,” she said. “Like many survivors, he carried that trauma quietly. Before he passed away in 1989, he shared very little about his experiences, and for a long time, there were many unanswered questions about our family history. of time researching my grandfather’s story and trying to better understand what he endured before, during, and after the war, but much of what he experienced is still a mystery. That journey has had a huge impact on me personally and as an educator.”
Izbicki-Wilson determined to create a class at KMHS sharing her knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust and how important it is that such a horror should never happen again.
“I truly believe Holocaust education is more important now than ever,” she said.
“We are seeing a rise in antisemitism, Holocaust denial, and extremism both in the United States and around the world. Because of that, I believe students need opportunities to study not only the history of the Holocaust, but also the dangers of hatred, propaganda, prejudice, and silence. North Carolina is fortunate to have the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act, which helps ensure students have opportunities to learn about the Holocaust, antisemitism, and genocide. I also feel fortunate that we can offer Holocaust Studies as an elective course to high school students.
One comparison I often think about comes from the American Revolution.
Baron von Steuben helped train the Continental Army at Valley Forge by teaching soldiers military drills and discipline, and those soldiers then trained others, who in turn trained others. In many ways, I see Holocaust education the same way. Every semester, I hope my stu-
dents leave this class with the facts, stories, and understanding needed to educate others. Even if each student reaches only one other person in their lifetime, the class has been worth it.”
Izbicki-Wilson’s class examined the roots of the Holocaust and went from there.
“Throughout this class, students have studied the effects of World War I on Germany, the rise of Hitler, the early years of Nazi rule, and the path that led Hitler to becoming Führer,” she said. “They have completed multiple projects, analyzed primary sources, studied propaganda and media influence, and listened to countless survivor testimonies and stories. Both classes also visited the Memorial to the Women of the Shoah in Greensboro, North Carolina, where students had the opportunity to reflect on the experiences of women during the Holocaust and the importance of remembrance.”
Izbicki-Wilson’s class drew a great response from students and over 40 signed up. In addition to primary resource material like films and photos, as well as Izbicki-Wilson’s lectures, they created projects such as scale models of what they thought a monument to the Holocaust might look like. This included dioramas of an empty classroom and a playground, both representing the missing children from the tragedy.
Another creative project saw students craft posters with names, faces, and persona histories of individuals and families who lost their lives. To get the photos and information, the students turned to sources like the National Holocaust Museum. The posters were placed on lockers in the
hallway outside of her class so that other students could see them as they walked past.
Several students spoke about what the class had taught them.
“I learned how Hitler came into power and the creation of the camps,” said Shiloh Bridges.
Chole Gregory said this“It taught me what the victims went through and how we can prevent it from happening again.”
Nathaniel Kaiser had this takeaway- “It was very informative. I also learned about modern examples of antisemitism.”
Lila Ford was touched by what she learned from the class- “Our teacher did a great job. I also learned a lot from watching films about what the victims went through.”
Even though the students saw the faces and facts surrounding just how bad Holocaust victims had it, Izbicki-Wilson also impressed upon students the reality that Holocaust victims were more that statistics.
“I wanted to show the victims as people,” she said “I wanted to humanize them. My goal has always been for students to understand that history is not just about memorizing facts or dates. It is about understanding people, choices, consequences, and our responsibility to stand against hatred, antisemitism, and intolerance whenever we see it. Holocaust education is not political; it is necessary.”

Cleveland Mills former employees to be honored
The Lawndale Historical Society will honor the former employees of Cleveland Mills at its seasonal opening on June 14 at 2:00 p.m. This event will be in the new meeting room at the museum located at 119 Piedmont Drive. Everyone is invited to attend as several of the employees share their memories of the mill and their co-workers. There will also be a pictorial display and a short video of the history of the mill. It was 1873 when the first Cleveland Cotton Mill building was constructed, located on Knob Creek near where it emptied into the First Broad River. The two-room building, with secondhand machinery, was built and operated by Major H. F. Schenck. After Major Schenck met James E. Reynolds, a successful northern yarn merchant, the two men went into business together and built a new, larger plant in 1888 on the river at a new location, Lawndale. The name was changed to Cleveland Mill and Power Company. What started as a small yarn mill making thread and cloth, grew to include dyeing, bleaching, and finishing. (source: article by Jno. F. Not only was Cleveland Cotton Mill the second mill operating in Cleveland County but as Cleveland Mill and Power Company they operated the first telephone switchboard in North Carolina. This switchboard could connect to a telephone at a bank in Shelby, a telephone at the Post Office and connect to the first cotton mill, which was located in Double Shoals. Additionally, the Cleveland Mill and Power Company built the Lawndale Railway and Industrial Company, which was a nine-mile, three-foot narrow-gauge railroad that operated between Shelby and Lawndale from 1899 to 1943. Initially, it was built by the mill to transport cotton and goods; later the train also hauled agricultural products and supplies, coal and general merchandise. There were even passengers traveling from Shelby to Lawndale on what was soon nicknamed the “Lawndale Dummy Line”. The Lawndale Historical Society began in 1993 and the museum, which is located at 119 Piedmont Drive, the former Piedmont School location, was dedicated in 1995. A second museum, Metcalf Station, is located at 2940 Polkville Rd, Shelby. Artifacts and documents from former businesses, schools and churches are displayed at each location. Additionally, the Lawndale location has some original records from Cleveland Cotton Mill and the Metcalf location, which is the original train depot, has boxcar #313, a historic water tank and signal lights used by the train known as the Lawndale Dummy. Each of the museums have open summer hours and can be visited by appointment at other times of the year. Lawndale Museum: each Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 pm from June until October. Kidney Association is hosting its “Lock Up for Life” festival on Saturday, June 13, 2026 from 7am – 1 pm at our Support Center, 1017 North Washington Street, Shelby. We will also be having a yard sale the same day, same time. In the past, we were able to provide clothing, groceries, medicines, pay rent, and utilities for many of our patients. We help with these whenever funds are available. The majority of people on dialysis are not able to hold down a job. They are on dialysis three days a week, four hours each day. By the time they feel better from their treatment, it is time to go for another one.
Because of the economy, donations have been re-
duced drastically. After being here for our patients for forty-five years, it breaks my heart to think we may have to curtail some of our services. I really do not know what our patients would do. Won’t you

Gift ideas for high school graduates
The class of 2023 soon will be donning their caps and gowns and receiving their diplomas. After commencement ceremonies, graduation parties will soon follow. For party guests, that means finding the right gifts for grads.

Individuals typically are eligible to apply for credit cards once they reach age 18, which is the age most students are when they graduate high school. Credit cards are one method of establishing solid credit, so it can be beneficial for a teen to have one. But it can be challenging for individuals with no credit histories to get approval. A secured card, according to CapitalOne, is a credit card that requires money deposited with the credit card issuer in order to open the account. This security deposit is held
by the issuer as long as the account is open. Often the security deposit is the same as the credit limit. Gift-givers can help establish secured cards for grads by providing the funds for the security deposits.
Wireless earbuds or headphones
Upgrade grads’ audio with the newest wireless earbuds or headphones. This way they can take them to the gym or use them to listen to shows or music while sharing spaces with others, including college roommates.
Smartphone wallet case
Teenagers are seldom with-
out their phones. A smartphone wallet case enables graduates to stash IDs, credit or debit cards and some cash into specially designed pockets built into the phone cases. This keeps all essentials in one spot.

Sam was born on October 30, 1937, in Cleveland County and was the son of the late Samuel Moser Sain and Velma Howell Sain.

Barbara Ann McGinnis Brackett, age 72, of Forest City, passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2026. Barbara was born Wednesday, January 6, 1954 in Rutherford County to the late Jessie James McGinnis and Emma Jane Bradley McGinnis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H.P. Brackett; and brothers, Jimmy, Bobby, Leroy, Ronnie, Steve and Mike McGinnis.
Barbara is survived by her son, Phil Brackett (Sharon Martin) of Forest City; her life companion, Millard Lipsey of Union, SC; and brother, Ervin McGinnis of Goodes Creek.
A graveside service was held May 30, 2026, at the Alexander Cemetery with Reverend Sam Henderson officiating.
