Program and Camp helps kids

School is out, and hundreds of elementary students are having a great time thanks to a special program put on by the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.
It’s called the STAR Program and Camp. That stands for Sheriffs Teaching Abuse Resistance. The STAR program is similar in concept to D.A.R.E. and is designed for 5th-grade students. It’s taught by School Resource Officers within their schools.
The program addresses alcohol and drug abuse prevention, the consequences of substance use, peer pressure, bullying, and making positive life choices. The program dates to 2021.
Sheriff’s Office Lt. Travis Lee heads up the STAR Program and Camp. He’s passionate about the positive benefits it brings to kids.
“I truly believe the STAR
important in our society and school today—building positive relationships between young students and law enforcement,” he said.
The program teams students from six Cleveland County elementary schools- Boiling Springs Elementary, Springmore Elementary, Union Elementary, Casar Elementary, Fallston Elementary, and Washington Elementary, with a group of School Resource Officers (SRO), for six weeks of summer learning and fun.
Another important aspect of STAR is the bonds that often form between STAR staff and the kids.
“What makes this story particularly impactful is the relationship-building aspect,” Lt. Lee said. “Throughout the program, students interact with their School Resource Officers in a positive, educational setting, allowing trust and mutual respect to develop naturally. By the end of the camp, officers are no longer viewed simply as authority figures but as mentors, role models, and trusted adults whom students feel comfortable approaching when they need help or guidance.

“Camp staff consist of thirteen to fifteen

“The camp this year has approximately thirty-five campers per each of its six weeks,” says Lt. Lee.
“The camp is offered to around six hundred students per year upon completion of the STAR curriculum. Approximately three hundred each year attend camp. Camp is held over eight weeks, three days per week during the summer break from school.”

A recent STAR Camp stint also included- lunch at Hannah Park, a visit to Cleveland Volunteer Fire Dept., a visit with Cleveland County EMS, a movie at Don Gibson Theatre, a Devotional, an Educational Field Trip to Kings Mountain Battleground, lunch at Kings Mountain State Park campground, and swimming at Shelby City Park.
Wait, there’s more, STAR Campers also receive a goody bag with a t-shirt, bracelets, stickers, and water bottle emblazoned with the STAR logo.
Lt. Lee is rooting for the continued success of the STAR Program.
“I hope it keeps growing and reaching as many kids as possible,” he said. “It is a bridge for all walks of our society.”

If you want deer on your trail cameras this time of year, then make sure you have a salt or trace mineral block out if your game laws allow. Because sodium is often lacking in spring and summer vegetation, the deer will seek these spots to fill that lack. And if you notice, most of the time they are more interested in the ground around the block than the block itself. As the sodium melts into the soil, the soil becomes a bowl of mineral cereal that deer love. Bucks need it to help build antler growth and does need it to help provide minerals to their recently birthed fawn. But just as salt creates thirst for us, it also does that for the deer. So, water is crucial this time of year as well. It’s all about balance. Food, supplements, and water. And just enough of each.
I’m reminded of a man who bought a parrot from a pet store. After several days, the bird still hadn’t said a word. Concerned, the man returned to the store. “Maybe he’s lonely,” the owner suggested. “Buy him a mirror.” The man did, but the parrot remained silent.
A few days later, he returned. “Maybe he needs something to do,” said the owner. “Try a ladder and a swing.” The man bought both. Still no words. Finally, the pet store owner suggested a larger cage. The man purchased it and went home. Several weeks later, the owner ran into the man at the grocery store. “How’s that parrot doing?” he asked.
The man lowered his head. “Unfortunately, he died.” “He died? Did he ever say anything?”
“Yes,” the man replied. “Right before he died, he said, ‘Didn’t that pet store sell any food?’” If I could teach Christians one thing about living around unbelievers, it would be the lesson of balance. It would be that influence is more important than instruction, and experience is more impactful than theology. Jesus said we are to be salt and light. Salt adds flavor. But too much salt is bitter. Light adds clarity and illumination, But too much light blinds. The impact of Jesus on our lives came as someone brought the right amount of flavor and clarity on the person of Jesus. And this balance is still the way. Any other approach is like providing a restaurant, when the real need is just a sandwich.

Jean (Gene) Winter Philbeck, 86, passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026. He was born in Cleveland County, Shelby, NC, on June 11, 1940, to the late Clure Cecil Philbeck and Mamie Elizabeth Philbeck.
Mr. Philbeck served our country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Chuck Lemons and Joseph Pinkley Scism, Jr.; sister, Priscilla Pearson and a grandson.

Mr. Randall served our country in the U.S. Army National Guard. 6 lemons 1 cup white sugar 6 cups cold water Juice the lemons to make 1 cup of juice. To make your labor easier, FIRMLY roll the lemons between your hand and counter top before cutting in half and juicing.
