Kings Mountain group working to restore old Goforth Cemetery

A small cemetery in Kings Mountain with a unique Revolutionary War twist is getting some badly needed freshening upand hoping for more.
The tiny Goforth graveyard is located in a shadowy patch of woods and underbrush on Afton Dr., just off Shelby Rd. There are just over twenty graves there dating back to the late 1700s. Some of the graves are unmarked. Some have broken tombstones. A few of the original stones have been veneered with modern reproductions. The whole scene is one from a time long-forgotten.
Maybe not.
A group of local history buffs called “Hampton’s Brigade” and headed by Margaret Ledford and Don Jenkins is working towards getting the cemetery ready for our nation’s 250 anniversary this July 4th. They’ve been aided by Boy Scouts from Troop 92 based at Central United Methodist Church led by Scoutmaster John Kaiser and including Eagle Scout Dennis Bolin.
A recent day saw the scouts raking leaves, picking up fallen branches, clearing weeds, and
in general tidying up the plot.
“We plan on the boys attend-

“We would like to have someone blow “Taps” at the event,” said Jenkins. “Perhaps a Marine.”
The hope is one day the cemetery can get additional attention to its appearance.
“We would like to get a flagpole and some benches,” said Ledford. “We need to plant grass too. An historical marker would be a dream.”
All the grave markers at the cemetery are intriguing,
including one that’s placed in memoriam to Isaac West Goforth who was a member of the 49th NC CSA and killed at the September 17, 1862 Battle of Antietam, Maryland.
However, it’s the stone at the grave of Preston Goforth, Jr., and the story behind his interment, that marks one of the most
compelling and intriguing of local Revolutionary War tales. Ledford, a descendant of Goforth, explained.

shot and killed each other. After the fight, Preston’s wife Nancy Potts Goforth went to the battlefield with a slave. They loaded his body on a sled pulled by an ox and brought it here to the family cemetery.”
Jenkins, who had ancestors in the Battle of Kings Mountain and who has done reenactments there dressed as an Overmountain Man, echoed Ledford’s remarks and added- “It took her two days to get his body here.”
As for John Preston’s body, it is said by some to have been placed in a mass grave at the battlefield.
But….a story in the February 20, 1992 Kings Mountain Herald by an unnamed author declares “John’s wife Sarah also went to the battle site in search of her husband. She also loaded his body
on a similar sled and an ox or mule pulled it back to their home.”
Whatever the circumstances, the fact that a cemetery dating to the Revolutionary War and holding the remains of a man who shouldered a musket for freedom at the pivotal Battle of Kings Mountain is in such a deplorable state should be a call to action for anyone with an ounce of patriotism in their body.

OREO LASAGNA
Oreo cookies (14-oz.)
6 tablespoons butter, melted
8-oz. package cream cheese
¼ cup white sugar
2 tablespoons milk Cool Whip (12 oz.)
2 pkg. instant chocolate pudding (3.9 oz.)
3-¼ cups milk
1-½ cups mini chocolate chips
• Crush Oreo cookies. Mix in butter. Press mixture into a 9x13-inch baking pan to make the crust. Refrigerate crust.
• Beat cream cheese until fluffy. Add sugar and 2 tablespoons milk; mix well. Stir in 1 1/4 cup Cool Whip. Spread mixture onto the crust and refrigerate.
• Mix pudding with 3-1/4 cups milk until thickened, about 5 minutes. Spread over the cream cheese layer. Refrigerate lasagna for 10 minutes.
• Spread remaining Cool Whip over the lasagna and sprinkle with chocolate chips. Refrigerate for 4 hours.

9 facts about the Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is a document that indicates the founding principles of the United States of America. The declaration was issued by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, and announced the separation of the 13 British colonies in North America from the United Kingdom.
That significance means the public may want to learn more about the Declaration of Independence. Here are some key facts.
1. While Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, it was carefully reviewed and modified by other
members of the Continental Congress, notably John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.
2. The Continental Congress actually voted for independence on July 2, 1776. The written Declaration was dated July 4, 1776, but it wasn’t actually signed until August 2nd of that year. John Adams thought July 2nd would be marked as the national holiday.
3. Fifty-six delegates signed the Declaration of Independence, but not all were present on that day in August.
4. While many know that John Hancock signed first, with his prominent signature readily visible,
it is believed that Thomas McKean of Delaware was the last person to sign.
5. Others signed according to state delegation and in columns, starting with the northernmost state (New Hampshire) to the southernmost (Georgia).
6. About 200 copies of the Dunlap Broadside were printed. Today, 26 copies remain.
7. The original rough draft of the Declaration of Independence has been lost.
8. The Declaration of Independence was not
universally accepted, and many people in the colonies remained loyal to the British monarchy and opposed American independence.
9. The Declaration of Independence has a message written on the back of it. It reads, “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.”

Mi Pueblito Memorial Scholarship Awards $5,500 to local graduating seniors
As Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant celebrates 30 years of family, flavor, and community, the restaurant is proud to announce the 2026 recipients of the Mi Pueblito Memorial Scholarship.
Created to honor the loving spirit and nurturing legacy of Judy Cope, the late mother of Mi Pueblito’s founder, Cindy Cope, the scholarship supports graduating seniors pursuing education in fields connected to hospitality, culinary arts, non-English language studies, immigration, family studies, human development, equine studies, and other service-centered careers.
“We started this scholarship in my late wife’s honor because neither of us could afford to go to college when we were young, and we know there are students out there facing the same challenge today,” said Randy Cope.
“Judy always placed a strong emphasis on education, and it means a lot to support these young people in her memory. All of us on the selection committee believe that helping them pursue their dreams will ultimately benefit the whole community.”
After a thoughtful review of applications and interviews, the Mi Pueblito Scholarship Committee awarded a total of $5,500 to eight outstanding graduating seniors from Rutherford and Cleveland counties.
“We ended up awarding
more scholarships because all of the students seemed so well qualified, and we wanted to support as many as possible,” Cope added.

When I first began bass fishing as a young adult, I didn’t have the luxury of a bass boat and all its frills. I fished with a friend who had a “V” hull aluminum boat. The trolling motor was small, and the outboard was even smaller. He owned a small cabin on the lake, so our fishing always started from the same location. Because of the limited horsepower we rarely traveled very far away. We always fished in the same places and seldom went home empty-handed. It seems as I got older and better equipped, I traveled farther up and down the lake to find those illusive bass, only to have pretty much the same results. You see now I spend more of my time moving than I do fishing and while I can see what’s below now with all the sonar, I once knew what was below by experience. I had fished Straight Creek Hollow so many times, under so many situations, that I knew where the bass were probably hiding. I was simply forced to bloom where I was planted. Oh, there were times that I wished I were up in the river or down beside the bridge; but I was forced to learn to succeed where I was at the time. I think about this same scenario when I deer hunt. I know that I will be better off if I will just come to know the 50 acres I’ve been given instead of trying to hunt 400 acres. I can remember taking a picture of a young pine tree. It was growing from the middle of a huge rock, and it was thriving. What it couldn’t go around, above, or under, it just went through. I knew it was not supposed to grow there but it didn’t. I knew it was out of place but it didn’t. I could have explained to it every reason why it would never become a fruitful tree, but the only thing that would have been unfruitful were my words. Because, you see, it bloomed where it was planted.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you will never succeed where you are. Don’t let anyone add you to the average or make you fit into a certain research demographic. When God is with you, what you can’t go around, above, or under, He will take you through.

Artie Mae Cooke Davis, 90, of Vale, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026. She was born on August 5, 1935, in Cleveland County, and was a daughter of the late Jakie Everette Cook and Mary Elizabeth Lail Cook.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Steve Davis; a daughter, Terri Davis Ruppe; two grandchildren; two brothers, Cecil Cook and Everette Cook; and two sisters, Louise Doster and Sue Watts.

Decorating for America’s 250th anniversary
Each year on July 4, many Americans are in a celebratory mood as they prepare for all the fanfare involved with Independence Day festivities. But Independence Day 2026 stands to be extra special since it marks America’s 250th birthday. Towns, cities and the entire country will be planning much more extravagant July 4 celebrations in 2026.
People who want to get in on the America 250 action may want to begin thinking about how they are going to make their homes and businesses more festive.
• Bunting and banners: Bunting and banners are traditional patriotic decorations. They traditionally are red, white and blue and can be hung from porches, fences and railings.
• American flags: Many homes and businesses already display the flag, but this is the perfect opportunity to do so for those who want to exhibit their pride in America. Be sure to treat
the flag with respect and review the official United States Flag Code, which mandates that the flag never touches the ground and is illuminated if flown at night. When hanging against a wall or window, the blue union must be at the top left.
• Specialty signs: Many municipalities are getting in on the America 250 action and will organize specialty parades and parties. People can check with local government offices to see if lawn signs will be available. If so, they can be displayed in front of homes or retail stores.
• Tablescapes: Themed America 250 tablecloths can be used for backyard parties and picnics. Centerpieces of mason jars filled with mini flags and birthday number candles spelling out

Have you ever felt like you didn’t belong? Maybe you were the new kid at school, the new employee trying to find your place, or the person standing alone at a gathering wondering if anyone noticed you were there. Most of us have experienced moments when we felt unseen, unwanted, or left out. The good news is that God’s family doesn’t operate that way. One of my favorite truths in Scripture is that God didn’t simply save us from our sins; he adopted us into his family. Ephesians 1:5 (NLT) says, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.” Think about that. The God who created the heavens and the earth looked at us and said, “I want you.”
ADOPTION
I love watching families welcome an adopted child into their home. Adoption is intentional. It requires sacrifice, commitment, and love. A child isn’t adopted by accident. Someone chooses them. In the same way, our Heavenly Father intentionally chose us. He knew
our weaknesses, our mistakes, our failures, and still opened his arms wide and called us his own. For years, I viewed salvation primarily as forgiveness. I was grateful that Jesus died for my sins, but I didn’t fully understand what came next. God didn’t rescue me so I could stand at a distance. He rescued me so I could come close. He wanted a relationship with me. He wanted me at his table. He wanted me to call him Father. Romans 8:15 (NLT) says, “So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” The word Abba is a term of intimacy, much like saying “Daddy.” It speaks of trust, closeness, and affection. We don’t have to approach God as strangers begging for attention. We can come boldly as beloved children.
IDENTITY
Maybe today you feel forgotten or overlooked. Perhaps circumstances have left you questioning your worth. Remember this: your identity is not found in your past, your position, or other people’s opinions. Your identity is found in the fact that you are a child of God. The Father’s heart has always been to bring his children home. Through Jesus Christ,
the door has been opened. You are welcomed, accepted, and loved. You belong.
PRAYER: Father, thank You for choosing me and adopting me into your family. Help me live with the confidence and security of knowing I am your child. When I feel rejected or alone, remind me that I belong to you. Thank you for your unfailing love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
CONNECTING TO GOD: If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.
