Cleveland County Farm Bureau holds Safety Day at KMHS

About 200 Career Development students at Kings Mountain High School recently got some first-class instruction on home and farm safety from members of the Cleveland County Farm Bureau and other community helpers.
Farm Bureau members on the scene included board members Thad Allen, Kevin Parker, Myron Edwards, and president Craig Mayes. Representatives from Rutherford Electric, Cleveland County EMS, the NC Forest Service, and Cleveland County Emergency Management also took part. A spanking new tractor and combine from the local John Deere dealer James River Equipment served as a farm safety demonstration aid.
The students formed up in small groups and rotated through the various demonstration stations where they learned what and what not to do when around agricultural and lawn machinery. They also learned first aid tips and home safety.
The Farm Bureau guys ex-
plained tractor power take-off shaft precautions and what can happen if you put your fingers too close to the drive chain and sprockets on a hay baler. For that demo, Allen inserted a wiener into a rubber glove to simulate a finger, tied the glove to a stick, started the baler, and poked the “finger” into the works. The gnarly result definitely got the students’ attention.
“We don’t want to scare you,” said Allen. “We just want you to be aware.”
Student Kaydence Den said the information was interesting.
“My grandfather has a tractor,” she said.
Another demo at the Farm Bureau station used miniature lawn tractor models with a baby doll on one and a sock monkey on the other. The baby doll had a roll cage and seat belt. The sock monkey did not. After rolling the mowers down a table the monkey flipped and came out the worse for wear thus demonstrating lawn care safety.
“Safety is the watchword,” said Parker.
At another station, NC For-
est Service county ranger Craig Oliver held a chain saw safety demo. He showed the students how to put on the full woodcutting regalia of helmet, chaps, earmuffs, and eye protection. He also explained how important it is to make sure you don’t accidentally surprise someone who is sawing.
‘Don’t come up and startle them,” he said. “They might not see you and swing around.”
Student Carter Delling allowed as how he had operated a chainsaw before but learned something new from Oliver.
“It was very helpful,” Delling said.
In a mobile unit on the school campus, Cleveland County EMS instructor Shawn Elliot held a very insightful seminar on how to do CPR, apply a heart defibrillator, and how tight to tighten a tourniquet. Elliot’s talk had a rapt audience of about 25 kids who hung on his every word- knowing the facts could save someone’s life
someday.

“It’s good to learn this,” he said.
Other safety stations on the rotation included demonstrations of fire extinguisher use, fire suppression blankets, and
electrical safety. The session wrapped up with a bang- literally. Back at the Farm Bureau demo station, a bush hog, tractor, and several dummies stuffed with straw awaited. As the students watched, Allen and Mayes placed a dummy near the bush hog, started the tractor, See FARM BUREAU, See Page 2

From Page 1 engaged the bush hog, then edged the dummy’s arm into the whirling PTO shaft. The result was an instant explosion of straw and dummy clothes showing how easy it is to get sucked in by the machinery. The kids were stunned. This writer was stunned. It was a sobering sight in the extreme.
“It gets their attention,” Allen said.
Overall, the day was a great success and hopefully planted plenty of safety seeds in the hearts and minds of the students who took part.
As student Will Acuff put it- “It was cool how the men came and spent time showing us what can happen when you are not safe.”

Grace is one of the greatest gifts God gives to humanity, yet it can also be one of the hardest gifts for people to extend to one another. It is often easier to receive grace than it is to offer it. When we have been hurt, misunderstood, rejected, or disappointed, our natural response is often frustration, distance, or even unforgiveness. However, scripture continually reminds believers that grace was never meant to stop with us. It was meant to flow through us. Relationships are beautiful, but they can also be complicated. No matter how much we love someone, people will make mistakes. Friends may disappoint us. Family members may say hurtful things. Coworkers may create tension. Even within the church, misunderstandings and offenses can occur. Because we live in an imperfect world filled with imperfect people, grace becomes essential. The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 4:2 (NLT),“Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.”
Grace does not mean pretending hurt does not exist. It does not mean allowing mistreatment or avoiding healthy boundaries. Instead, grace means choosing not to let bitterness take root in our hearts. It means surrendering the desire for revenge and trusting God to bring healing and justice in his way and timing. Unforgiveness can quietly become heavy baggage that affects every area of life. It steals peace, damages relationships, and keeps emotional wounds open. Sometimes the person we refuse to forgive has moved on while we remain trapped in resentment. Grace frees us from carrying burdens we were never meant to hold. Jesus modeled this kind of grace throughout His ministry. Even while hanging on the cross, after enduring betrayal, rejection, false accusations, and unbearable suffering, he prayed in Luke 23:34 (NLT), “ Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice.” What an extraordinary example of mercy. Christ demonstrated that grace is not based on whether someone deserves it. Grace is rooted in love.
Let’s Pray:
“Lord, you are good and your mercy endures forever. Your mercy and love never fail. I
am in awe of your love. Forgive me for allowing pride and selfcenteredness to cause me to hold on to offence and unforgiveness. Lord, I choose to release those who have offended and hurt me. I will no longer hold it against them. Please remove the anger and pain from my soul. Show me how to bless them. May you make your face shine upon them and give them peace in Jesus’ mighty name I pray. Amen.”

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Pansy was born in Cleveland County and has remained there all of her 90 years. She is a life long member of Union Baptist Church. Pansy and her late husband “Red” of 48 years, had 2 sons Jerry and Danny Heavner both of Lawndale.
Pansy also has grandsons Dylan and Alan of Cleveland County and Great Grands CJ, Brooklin and Conner of Cleveland County. Pansy has lots of family and family friends that love her very much!
Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ

Dear Mama, I miss you so much.
I have a favorite blanket. Don’t laugh. You probably do to. And if you don’t now, you once did. Deny it and I’ll just ask your momma, and she’ll show me picture after picture of you with your thumb in your mouth and your blanket over your shoulder. My own son was not only attached to a certain blanket, but he also had a favorite corner of the blanket. I can remember that blanket having to be restored several times and ultimately becoming a series of knots that simply held one piece to the other. My blanket is special for a few reasons. It’s only wide enough for me, it’s camo, it’s two layers of fleece, and my daughter made it for me. Just writing about it makes me want to stop what I’m doing and go get it. If you think about it, blankets are prized possessions of many women today. Except this blanket is no longer in use. It is for safe-keeping and for remembering family and events. It is their mother’s or grandmother’s quilt. It was put together one piece at a time from swatches of clothing or fabric that had made its way to the rag pile. Part of a coat has been sewn to a strip of a wornout shirt. The other side of that shirt is attached to the leftover seat of an old pair of blue jeans. A portion of a baseball jersey is attached to a sliver of your first pair of pajamas. Each piece seemingly no longer of any value on its own and seemingly without any connection to the other. And yet there it is, one whole tapestry, completely understood, and of immeasurable value. All from what was once falling-apart, worthless swatches of unconnected material. Except to the seamstress. Except to the one who was there for the first onesie and the first silky blanket. Except for the one who understood that each section was always a part of the whole, that there were no random events, and there were no worthless pieces. God is taking every swatch of your life and sewing them together. What you see as worthless and worn-out, He sees as indispensable and ready for its best use. What you see as unconnected, God sees as vital to the whole. What you see as insignificant, He sees as essential in who He is making you to be. And what you see as a flaw, He sees as what will be someone’s favorite corner of your life. God has been there from the very beginning, and not one piece of your life will be wasted. Individually they may not make sense, but God is bigger than your pieces. He is not only making you into a quilt to be admired and remembered, but also into a blanket to be used to bring comfort and assurance to others.
Everything about you. I miss our times together, your big hugs.

2nd—Roger Beaver—2 fish—3.40 lbs
3rd--- Derek Barkley—1 fish—1.82 lbs
The 2nd tournament was on Fishing Creek in March and the top 3 were:
1st—Roger Beaver—9.34 lbs. He also took big fish of the day with a 4.189 pounder.

Annual Fly-In and Open House, Saturday, June 6
The Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport will be hosting its annual Fly-In and Open House on Saturday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free, open to the public, and something the whole family will enjoy.
Compass Aviation is offering limited airplane rides for $40 and JAARS is offering limited helicopter flights for $50. The aircraft will carry an average of 5 riders per flight. Atrium Health will have a medical helicopter on site for viewing and touring. American and European cars will also be on display. There will also be
booths and information available from aviation related activities and organizations such as CAP, (Civil Air Patrol), Marine Corps League Foothills Detachment #1164, Compass Aviation, Resurgence, powered parachutes, hot air ballooning, FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), JAARS and flight training. Food and Snowballs will be available from vendors.
Come out and enjoy the day, tour the airport terminal, grab a bite to eat, and see many aircraft up close while viewing them taking off and landing on the airfield.

Kay was also preceded in death by two sisters, Teresa Sims and Beverly Sims.

Mr. Forest Edward Vinson, 76, of Cherryville, NC, passed away on May 9, 2026. He was born in Cleveland County on November 17, 1949 to the late Leroy Vinson, Sr. and Alvesta Clements Vinson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Renee Vinson Lail and his brother, Leroy Vinson, Jr.

She is also predeceased by her husband, Daniel L. Jones, Sr.; son-in-law, Marty Burton; three grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Cleveland Community College Hosts Fifth Annual High School Welding Competition
Cleveland Community College (CCC) welcomed the county’s top young welding talent on Friday, May 1, 2026, for its fifth annual High School Welding Competition. The event kicked off at 9 a.m. and featured 16 student competitors—four each from Burns High School, Crest High School, Kings Mountain High School, and Shelby High School—demonstrating their technical skills and precision in a hands-on, industry-style challenge. The participants received specific guidelines to complete a weld assembly using the SMAW process, and the welds had to be performed in several different positions.

Burns High School was named Top School, earning a commemorative welding plaque crafted by CCC Welding Instructor Michael Beaty, to be displayed at the school for the coming year.
The competition was made possible through the support of sponsors including Arc3, IMA Contractors, Andy Oxy, Cleveland County Economic Development Partnership, Cleveland Community College Foundation, the families of Michael David Scott Parsons, Gabe DiBruno, and Margaret Goodman, and the Cleveland Association of Government Officials.
Industry professionals Curtis Rippy, Certified Welding Inspector, and Doug Toney, Certified Welding Inspector and ARC3 representative, served as judges, bringing real-world expertise to the evaluation process.
CCC welding instructors Michael Beaty and Jonathon John-
son worked alongside high school instructors Erik Price and Kevin Owenby (Kings Mountain High School), Rick Greene (Shelby High School), Brackston Bivins (Burns High School), and Wes Stevens (Crest High School) to support students throughout the event.
Special guests included Jessica Talbert, representing the Gabe DiBruno Scholarship Fund, and Dave and Lea Parsons, who established the Michael David Scott Parsons Endowed Scholarship in memory of their son. The Cleveland Association of Government Officials was represented by Ronnie Whetstine, who presided over the organization when the scholarship was established through the CCC Foundation.
“These scholarships ensure that students not only pursue their passion but also carry forward the legacy of those who inspired them,” said Dr. Mack.
Now in its fifth year, CCC’s High School Welding Competition continues to play a vital role in preparing students for high-demand careers in skilled trades. By combining education, industry collaboration, and community investment, the event reinforces Cleveland Community College’s commitment to workforce development.
Blueberry Lemon Cake
1 cup milk
½ cup lemon juice
1 cup cane sugar
½ cup olive oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon lemon extract
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
Pinch of salt
2-¼ cup all purpose flour
1 cup frozen blueberries
Glaze
2 tablespoon softened butter
2 tablespoon cream cheese
¾ cup powdered sugar
While cake is baking, whisk together butter, cream cheese, and powdered sugar together in a small bowl with a fork or whisk.
Cake
• Preheat oven to 350. Grease and flour 8x8 square baking dish. In a large bowl, mix:
milk, lemon juice, sugar, olive oil, vanilla, lemon, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together. Add the flour and mix until a smooth batter is formed. Fold in the blueberries
• Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes or until it is completely cooked through the center.
• Allow cake to cool and spread glaze on top.

Our Time Is Precious
We should never put off till tomorrow what we can do today. The biggest problem with this is that we can’t do everything today. Life has to be spaced out and we have to hope and pray that we will have the opportunity to do some or most of what we would like to do. You can’t graduate from high school until you complete the requirements. You can’t begin a new career until obtain the job you want. Most jobs have prerequisites. Prerequisites require time. Many occupations require years of education and training. Thus, you have to do what you can today and plan out what you are going to do for three or four years to prepare yourself.

If you spend every day doing nothing then nothing is what you have to look forward to. The musician practices long hours in hopes of performing at a future
date. The runner trains daily hoping to win the 5K or even a marathon at a later date. A family may dream of a vacation so they save their money and sacrifice for a future outing. The best we can do today is to do the best we can. Do what we know to do. Try to do the right thing. Have a goal or a list of objectives and do today what is necessary to move us closer to our goal. We don’t have to live with goals but if we aim for nothing we achieve nothing. Often, our goal may be to just do a good job at whatever we currently have to do. If we do a good job every day then tomorrow will most likely be good. If we do a bad job every day then tomorrow may not be so good. We reap what we sow. Planting good seeds in our daily lives will result in a harvest a little bit later, somewhere down the road.
Hard work pays off. The harder you work, the luckier you will become. The more you try, the more likely you

will be successful. If you fish, keep baiting hooks and dropping them in the water. Eventually you get a bite and even catch a fish, if there are fish in the water. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to catch a fish where there aren’t any. This applies to jobs. You can’t get a job where there aren’t any jobs. This means you have to make plans to be in a place where there is at least an opportunity.
Again, we all have limited time. We could eventually
accomplish everything and anything we want to do, if we have 500 years to do it all, but we don’t. Forty, eighty, a hundred years is just a flash in the pan. Thus, we need to figure out what we really want too because we don’t have that much time to do it.
Be good to yourself. Love people, love God. Wherever you are, be all there. Our time is precious.
