It would just about fill an encyclopedia to chronicle all the adventurous, audacious, artistic, and innovative things that Shelby’s Lee Barry has packed into his life.
To begin with, he’s 102 years old. That’s right, a century plus two years.
“I was born in Newark, New Jersey on April 26, 1923,” Barry says. “My father John Barylewicz was from Poland and my mother Anna Karmazyn from Ukraine.”
Barry’s keen intellect manifested itself from an early age,
“When I started school I could only speak Polish,” he said. “My teacher Mrs. Roe helped me learn English.”
Barry soon turned his boundless energy to work.
“My first job was assembling phones for U.S. Instrument Co.,” he says. “My pay was 35 cents an hour.”
When WWII came around, Barry joined the U.S. Navy. He served on three ships, the USS Independence, USS Hector, and USS Cebu. One of his jobs was gunnery fire control. During his
38 months service, he visited a number of places in the Pacific Theater.
“It was very interesting,” Barry said, “I was at Tarawa, Eniwetok, the Philippines, and Leyte Gulf.”
Barry has one of the souvenirs he got in the Philippines hanging on his home office walla wicked looking curved bolo knife.
Perhaps the most memorable event in Barry’s life during his
Navy days was meeting his future wife Lois at a USO dance. They were married on December 19, 1945 and were devoted to one another for 73 years until she passed away in 2019.
“We never had a serious argument the whole time,” Barry says.
After the Navy, Barry attended college and earned an engineering degree. He eventually went to work for a company called Fasco. He worked in New Jersey then in Charlottesville, Va. He came to Shelby and opened the Fasco factory here in 1973.
Barry’s days at Shelby Fasco formed a lot of friendships.
“I would greet everyone at 5am,” he says.
Another important category of Barry’s life revolves around the Appalachian Trail. The “AT” as it’s often called stretches over 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine. About 200 miles are in North Carolina.
The hiking bug bit Barry at an early age.
See BARRY, Page 2
From Page 1
“I started when I was 15 years old in the Boy Scouts,” he says.
Over the course of his hiking career, Barry walked the entire length of the AT a total of five times, and that doesn’t include shorter, sectional hikes. The last time he walked the whole length, he was 81 years old. He held the record for being the oldest person to accomplish that feat for 14 years.
In addition, he hiked to the top of all 40 peaks in North Carolina and Tennessee that are over 6,000ft. in elevation.
“I enjoyed the challenge of being independent, of sleeping on the ground, and the peace and quiet on the trail,” he says.
A cool part of Barry’s hiking career, and one that shows another of his numerous talents, is the fact he made most of his own packs, tents, and other equipment. His office has numerous models for lightweight tents that he made.
“Since I was an engineer by training, I could design things,” he says. “My wife had an old Singer sewing machine and I used that to sew the packs and tents I used.”
Lois also had a hand in enabling Lee to feed his hiking habit- literally.
“She would meet me on the trail with provisions and other things I needed,” he says.
Barry is an avid reader who credits a childhood exposure to National Geographic magazine as something that sparked that part of his brain. His skill with words has led him to write over 40 books. Some of the works are the spy thriller type, there are also books about his Navy days. He even wrote a book devoted to hiking entitled “Easy Does It” that features a photo of
Here are the patches proving Barry hiked the entire Appalachian Trail five times.
himself on the AT at age 81.
But wait, Barry has even more talents, one being his skill at art. Several shelves in his office are lined with paintings of birds done on glass.
The vibrant colors and fine detail of these avian artworks are amazing.
These days, Barry, his daughter Susan, and her husband Luis Vasquez live on Park Circle in Shelby in the house Barry moved into in the 1970s. They share the place with three large and affectionate cats. He spends a lot of his time writing his memoirs and putting the material on thumb drives for future generations to enjoy. He also enjoys listening to a variety of music ranging from Tex-Mex to rock.
Even though his mobility is not quite what it used to be, his mind is still like a steel trap and he can rattle off memories of things that happened decade after decade ago with alacrity.
Overall, Barry is still kicking it down the road at a pretty good pace.
“My daughter and her husband are good to me,” he says. “My health is reasonable, and I am financially independent. I am in the right place at the right time. Finally!”

The Kings Mountain Police Department reminds swimmers and boaters to take extra precautions while enjoying the water this season. The Safe Kids Life Jacket program is now fully stocked at Moss Lake.
Thanks to our sponsors, if your child or teenager forgets their life jacket, they can grab a loaner before getting in the water. Just make sure you put it back for the next person.
Thanks to all city departments (especially, Building Maintenance) who played a role in making sure we were ready to go for the Summer.
Remember that life jackets are not like clothes. Children do not grow into them. The life jacket must fit the person to be effective. Select the correct jacket to fit the child’s size and weight. Fasten all straps and test the jacket by lifting the child by the jacket to ensure a strong fit.
The Safe Kids Life Jacket program encourages users to inspect the jacket for any damage prior to use. Pick a jacket that fits properly. Place the jacket over the child’s head, wrap the buckle around the waist, and fasten it in front to secure it. Tighten the jacket’s straps throughout the day when needed. When borrowing life jackets from the kiosk, please notify Cleveland County if a jacket needs repair and select a different one. Borrowers
assume all risks and liability.
Even if your child is a strong swimmer, a life jacket is essential to ensure their safety, especially when enjoying the lake and rivers. Always enter the water feet first, as unseen debris and obstacles just below the surface can easily cause injuries.
Wearing lake shoes or water sandals is also recommended to
avoid unwanted cuts or bruises from hidden items on the lakebed.
Never swim or wade in lakes and rivers when alone. Always use the Buddy System to ensure a safe and enjoyable day out in the water.
The Safe Kids Life Jacket program is accepting donations at https://secure.givelively. org/.2x5.252.

and insects go to work. The night shift is going home, and the day shift is making their way to the job at hand. It’s another day on the wilderness expressway. Every creature has a particular purpose.
It may be the “stay at home” doe whose daily task is raising and protecting that young fawn that can’t seem to keep his nose out of everything. It may be the chipmunk who sprints from one place to another, gathering up the materials to winterize his home. Or it may be the small spider who will patiently spin her web at the nearest food mart in order to provide the necessary sustenance. Sounds like us, doesn’t it? But, if you look closer, you will see a major difference. In the wild animal world, there are no signs of worry, stress or doubt. They are persistent, yes. But they make time every day for fun, fellowship and even naps. They know it is the God of the universe who will provide for them. He always has, so there is no need to worry or doubt or get stressed out. It seems they know the bible says, “Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them.” And it seems they have read where the scripture says, “Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing.” I wonder, however, if we know the rest of that verse. It says, “And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you.” You know, I have never seen an animal worry. And if an animal doesn’t need to worry about its provision and protection, how much more should we, who are made in His image and carry the very presence of God within us?

Today, I want to share a gentle reminder about something truly precious— the importance of having the mind of Christ. It’s a beautiful goal for every believer, as it transforms how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us.
The Apostle Paul encourages us in Philippians 2:5, saying, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” What does it mean to have the mind of Christ? It’s about adopting His way of thinking, His attitudes, and His heart. It’s about viewing life through His lens—filled with love, humility, grace, and purpose. Why is this so important? When our minds are aligned with Christ’s, we become more patient, kind, and forgiving. We respond to challenges with peace instead of anxiety. We begin to see people not as obstacles or strangers, but as beloved children of God, deserving of love and kindness. Having the mind of Christ helps us live with integrity and purpose, reflecting His light in our everyday lives.
Take Thoughts Captive
Two of my favorite scriptures are in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 which says, “since the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but are powerful through God for the demolition of strongholds. We demolish arguments and every proud thing that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ.” In other words, we don’t have to accept every thought that comes to our mind. If it doesn’t align with the Word of God, we can reject it. We reject it by declaring the Word of God instead of the negative thought. We can also declare that we don’t receive the negative thought, but will believe scripture. As we do this, our thoughts will become more and more aligned with Christ’s, guiding our actions and reactions.
Develop the Mind of Christ How can we practically develop the mind of Christ?
Here are a few simple steps:
• Spend time in prayer daily, asking the Holy Spirit to renew your mind.
• Read the Bible regularly, especially passages about Jesus’ life and teachings.
• Practice humility and kindness in your interactions.
• Surround yourself with supportive believers who encourage your spiritual growth.
• Meditate on scriptures that remind you of Christ’s love and humility. Remember, having the mind of Christ isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. Every day is an opportunity to grow closer to Jesus and reflect His mind more clearly. When we do, our lives become a testimony of His love, shining brightly for everyone around us.
Let’s Pray: “Lord, thank You for giving us Your mind through Your Spirit. Help us to renew our thoughts daily and to think like You. Teach us humility, love, and grace so that we may reflect Your character in all we do. Fill us with Your peace and guide us on this journey. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying. “In Jesus’ name - Amen.”
Sparks flew at Cleveland Community College on Friday, May 9, as high school welding students from across Cleveland County demonstrated their skills at CCC’s fourth annual High School Welding Competition.
For the second year in a row, Crest High School took home all the top honors, sweeping the first, second, and third-place individual awards, as well as the overall team title.
Competitors were challenged to weld a ¼-inch plate positioned at a 90-degree angle to a 6-inch plate using both SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) and GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) processes. Each student had 2.5 hours to complete the task with materials and equipment provided. Judges Curtis Rippy of Maco and Preston Bone of Digitrol evaluated the projects based on precision and technique. As part of the competition, the top-performing student from each high school was presented with a $500 scholarship to CCC’s welding program:
• Burns High School – Harrison Waters, Gene Borders Memorial Endowed Scholarship
• Crest High School – Tucker Swofford, Michael David Scott, Parsons Memorial Endowed Scholarship.
• Kings Mountain High School – Colt Dixon, Habitat for Humanity of Cleveland County Annual Scholarship.
• Shelby High School – Rauzel Guel, Gabe Dibruno Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Top Individual Winners:
• 1st Place: Tucker Swofford (Crest) – Welding bag, DeWalt cordless drill, flashlight, gloves, pliers, and wrenches.
• 2nd Place: Carter Bryant (Crest) – Welding bag, sleeves, level, and gloves.
• 3rd Place: Oscar Morlais (Crest) – Welding bag, magnet, rod holder, and file.
All student competitors received custom welding hoods featuring their school’s mascot, gloves, safety glasses, welding caps, and cooler bags.
Wes Stevens, Crest High School’s welding instructor, praised his students’ hard work: “This is a chance for them to showcase their skills. This competition is all about the kids, and I want them to get the recognition they deserve.”
This year introduced a new tradition: a handcrafted welding plaque by CCC welding instructor Michael Beaty. The plaque will reside at the winning team’s school until the next competition.
The event was made possible through support from Andy Oxy, Arc3, IMA Contractors, the CCC Foundation, and several community partners and families.
