Cleveland County Music Hall of Fame project well under way

Cleveland County has been known for many decades as a music mecca, and now a group of dedicated and enthusiastic folks is transforming the former WOHS radio building at 1511 W. Dixon Blvd. in Shelby into a hall of fame recognizing some of the musicians and other musicminded individuals who have made and kept that tradition alive.
Officially known as the Cleveland County Music Hall of Fame, the endeavor is guided by a board that includes president Phil Weathers, vice president Angela Patterson Padgett, secretary/treasurer Mary Fox, and board members Danny Shull, Jamie Coulter, Rick Stroupe, Vickie Shull, Brinkley Isaacs, Julie Stroupe, Patti Weathers, Ronnie Whisnant, Drew Fulton, and Tommy Burns. The group was formed in 2019 and is a 501 C3 non-profit.
“Our mission is to honor the legacy of pioneers from Cleveland County whose talent has enriched the musical landscape of the area while giving tools needed to future generations of musicians, instructors and all associated with our local music community,” Phil Weathers said.
Over the years, the brick building, a familiar sight to motorists on US74, has housed a variety of radio stations. Large, white metal letters spelling WOHS still stand in front of it on a grassy slope.
“The station opened in 1946 as WOHS,” he said. “Later, WXIK broadcast from it as well as KTC Broadcasting.”
In 2021, KTC Broadcasting owners Calvin and Teresa Hastings donated the building to CCMHF. That was followed in February 2024, when the CCMHF
received a $75k donation from Cleveland County and the State of North Carolina to get started renovating the structure.
“Tim Moore, Kelly Hastings, and Ted Alexander helped us secure the funding,” Weathers says.
The money has been put to good use. So far, the building has gotten a new roof, and a handicapped ramp constructed on the side entrance along with new, double doors. The restroom has been modernized and upgraded.
Other interior spaces are still in need of work. One large room measuring 15’x30’ could serve a
variety of uses once renovated.
“We could use it as a meeting space for corporate gatherings, a gift shop, live bands, guest speakers, and parties,” said Vickie Shull.
Landscaping upgrades are also planned to include freshening up the WOHS sign.
“We are working with Steve McHugh Metalworks in Polkville to get that done,” said Danny Shull.

Mother’s Day is celebrated each May and marks a perfect opportunity to show Mom how much she’s loved and appreciated. Mother’s Day has been celebrated for more than 100 years, and in that time mothers have grown accustomed to certain staples of the holiday. A bouquet of fresh flowers, Sunday brunch at a local restaurant and some gifts from a partner and the children have become standards each Mother’s Day.
While Mother’s Day standards may never lose their appeal, families looking to make this year’s celebration a little more unique can consider these ideas.
• Whip up (or order in) some baked goods. If Mom is the family baker, surprise her this year with some homemade baked
goods. An aroma of freshly baked goodies around the house can set a welcoming tone for the day, particularly if the treats are prepared in the morning before Mom wakes up. Partners and children whose baking skills leave a little to be desired can get some freshly baked treats from a local bakery and have them waiting for Mom when she wakes up.
• Take to the road. Another way to make Mother’s Day extra special is to make the celebration a weekend affair. A weekend getaway can be a welcome breath of fresh air for mothers

Crafts lead the way for Mother’s Day gifts

Older children typically are capable of designing their own Mother’s Day crafts or even shopping for gifts for Mom, while younger children will likely need some help from an adult.
Youngsters may not be able
to take charge of Mother’s Day festivities alone, but they certainly have the energy and enthusiasm to chip in. Handmade craft gifts are a thoughtful way for young kids to show their love for Mom. Here are a few ideas that can occupy even the youngest of hands.
Handprint butterfly photo card
All that is necessary for this craft is a printed photograph of the child’s face, paper, scissors, glue, and finger paints. The child should dip hands into the paint and make four handprints on paper in some preferred colors. When dry, cut around the perimeter of the handprints. These will serve as the “wings” of the butterfly. Glue the picture of the child’s face in the middle of a piece of paper or card stock. Draw a butterfly body underneath it (or print out a stock image to use). Draw antennae sticking out of the child’s head and attach the handprints around the head and butterfly body to make the wings.
Heartfelt masterpiece
Children can draw and color all over a large sheet of con-
struction paper or another durable paper. An adult can then use another sheet of paper to make a frame mat of sorts, cutting out a heart shape from the middle. Both pieces of paper are then trimmed to the dimensions of a photo frame. The artwork is placed first and then the heart matting on top so that the artwork will show through the heart shape. Frame everything together for a lasting memento.
Fuzzy flowers
Kids can make Mom a bouquet of flowers that will never wilt. Print a photo of the child’s face and attach it to a piece of circular card stock that is roughly six inches in diameter. Have the child paint a popsicle stick green, and then attach that to the back of the round card stock. The child then glues small fuzzy pom poms to the card stock surrounding the picture to make a flower. If desired, attach a magnet to the back of the flower so it can be secured to the refrigerator.

How to ensure a relaxing day for Mom this Mother’s Day
The unconditional love and undying patience moms exhibit as they raise their children is worthy of more than just a single day of appreciation in May. Moms do a lot for their families, and though that’s something to celebrate every day, Mother’s Day merits upping the ante in regard to showing Mom how much she’s loved and appreciated.
This year, families can work together to ensure this Mother’s Day is a day for Mom to relax and bask in all the extra attention she deserves.
• Serve breakfast in bed. Mom might be on breakfast detail on hectic weekday
mornings, but Mother’s Day marks the perfect time for spouses and kids to take over those responsibilities. This year, keep the cereal in the pantry and go the extra mile by preparing a homemade breakfast and serving it to Mom in bed. Present the meal with a small bouquet of flowers and some reading material and then let Mom eat in peace and quiet if she so prefers.
• Turn the en suite into a spa. Nothing complements a relaxing breakfast in bed better than a subsequent dip in Mom’s own private spa. Transform the en suite or another bathroom into Mom’s personal soaking space. Clean
the bathtub, light some candles around the tub and bathroom, turn on some relaxing music, dim the lights, and then invite Mom in to soak in a freshly drawn hot bubble bath.
• Keep Mom out of the kitchen. Keep the relaxing vibe going by making sure Mom doesn’t have to lift a finger in the kitchen. Make sure all the dishes are washed before Mom comes downstairs for the day and let her know you’ve already ordered lunch from a local restaurant. MINT CHOCOLATE MOUSSE
Serves 4
5 oz. dark chocolate (60 to 70 percent cocoa solids), chopped or broken up into smaller pieces
4 to 6 chocolate covered dinner mints, chopped
4 eggs, separated
2 tablespoons sugar
4 tablespoons heavy cream
1 teaspoon powdered gelatin 2 tablespoons chopped chocolate mint sticks, or frosted mint leaves and 1 cup heavy cream, to decorate
This recipe for “Mint Chocolate Mousse” from “Chocolate: Deliciously Indulgent Recipes for Chocolate Lovers” (Ryland, Peters & Small) by Maxine Clark is ideal for mothers who love the taste of mint and chocolate. It’s relatively simple to make, so it should be something that young children can handle with a little help from an adult.

Two songs were included, “I Love the Nightlife,” by Alicia Bridges, and “Timber, I’m Falling in Love,” by Patty Loveless.
“We hope to have our second induction ceremony in the fall of this year,” said Weathers.
The CCMHF is a work in progress.

As of April 24, 2026, the state-issued ban on open burning remains in effect for all 100 counties. Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning statewide, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted.
The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet, and many local jurisdictions have done just that. In addition to state and local bans, the USDA Forest Service has implemented fire restrictions across all four national forests in North Carolina.
A Southeastern U.S. Fuels & Fire Behavior Advisory has been issued for the region. Advisories like this one are issued by the Southern Area Coordination Center with support from state and federal agencies. These advisories are helpful in identifying key considerations that can impact fuels and fire behavior over an extended period.
From that advisory, here are some key considerations to keep in mind for North Carolina: Persistent dry weather and intensifying drought are resulting in historically dry fuels from the southern Appalachians and adjacent areas into the coastal Southeast. Dry weather is expected to persist in the shortterm but will be followed by a pattern change later in April that could result in an increase in lightning fires across the Southeast along with only temporary relist from the long-term drought.
Green-up and leaf-out are progressing normally as far as timing, but low soil moisture, dry surface fuels, low water levels in coastal areas and persistent low humidity are contributing to unusual fire activity. Do not be fooled by fuels that appear to be green – fire will spread readily in current conditions.
Precipitation deficits since the 2025 hurricane season are more than 10 inches across most of the area and near 2 feet in

the temperate rainforests of the southern Appalachians. In addition to extreme fire behavior and increased resistance to control in the coastal plain and Appalachians, the drought has resulted in historically low streamflow and water levels for this time of year. Persistent dry air in the short term will result in some of the driest fuels experienced in the region in at least 20 years. Helene fuels will be much more available now than last spring or fall. Ground fire will likely be a longterm issue that can hinder fire control.
Recent fuel-driven fires in coastal plain areas have produced explosive fire behavior that may outpace control efforts, even with little or no wind. Extended attack and mopup efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve. This requires substantial personnel and equipment resources. Members of the public should stay informed of fire activity near their location and should heed evacuation notices immediately. Stay ready.
Remember, wildfires are a no-drone zone. When a wildfire runs and spreads rapidly, every minute counts. Drones can pose a serious threat to pilot and public safety. Firefighting aircraft that respond to wildfires fly low in support of ground personnel. Being prepared for wildfire is more important than ever. Take the time to harden your home and create defensible space in the home ignition zone in as little time as a few days. Clear away all pine needles, dead leaves and sticks from your roof, porch, gutters, deck, patio and fence lines so falling embers will have nothing to burn. Clear away all dead vegetation and flammable items within 30 feet of structures and propane tanks. Store away furniture cushions, rattan mats, potted plants and other décor from your decks, porches and patios. Trim overhanging branches away from your home, patios and outbuildings.

That morning I had located what turned out to be four toms and some hens. They were still on the roost. And even though they had not been pressured, I made sure to do minimal and only light calling. A soft yelp on my slate call was enough for all the ears within 100 yards to hear me. So, I laid down the call, got my gun ready, and began scanning the top of the hill in front of me. I knew pretty much what any older tom would do. He would not come directly in line with my call. He would show up to one side or another. These birds know not to trust their ears as much as their eyes. I also knew that any other tom that might be with him would follow. Sure enough, in just a few minutes, two hens and four gobblers showed up about 100 yards to my right – which is a terrible place if one is right-handed like myself. Two of the toms began to perform in full strut. The other two shortly followed suit. The hens were not impressed. I thought about how I might go about getting a shot without being seen. Nothing came to mind other than “be patient.” Soon the hens moved within 35 yards of me, and two big toms were following. The problem, however, remained. They stayed to my right. How would I rearrange my seating, raise my gun and aim without them seeing me and flying away. I couldn’t. So, I decided once again to just be patient. Before too long, all those toms began coming my way and moving perfectly in front of me. The biggest one came to about 40 yards. When he moved behind a tree, I raised my gun, got ready, and waited (patiently again) for him to clear the tree. When he did, I aimed carefully and pulled the trigger. I ate smoked turkey breast for lunch the next day. He was a big bird. Eleven inches of beard. One and a half inch spurs. It was a fun hunt. When you look at the subject of patience in the Bible, you will quickly notice that God thinks it is important. There are several reasons and many of them have to do with our everyday circumstances and situations. But I think when it comes to relationships, I see three things. First, God is patient with us. A synonym of patience that describes His dealings with us is the word long-suffering. God is long suffering with us. I sure am glad He is. Secondly, since He is patient with us, He wants us to be patient with other people. Or be long-suffering with others. Yes, this is the hard part. But here’s the third piece. It’s the job of the Holy Spirit to produce in us the patience we need to deal with others. And in this I think is where people see Jesus in us. It’s when our patience with others is seen as coming from a place beyond us. So, the next time you’re struggling with patience with others, ask God to remind you how many times He has waited for you to get it right. For me, I think He’s still waiting.

Ann Wakefield Young, 75, of Shelby, passed away on February 25, 2026. She was born on April 4, 1950, in Burke County.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, William and Helen Wakefield.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis C. (4th & Final Part of “April Fools: The Danger of Spiritual Foolishness” Series)
There comes a moment in every believer’s life when the light turns on, when what once seemed right is exposed as deception, and truth begins to take its rightful place. That moment is the beginning of freedom. In John 8:31-32 (NASB) Jesus said, .... “If you continue in my word, then you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Not feelings, not opinions, not culture, his truth sets you free. For too long, many have been fooled. Fooled by emotions that felt real but were not rooted in truth. Fooled by voices that sounded convincing but were not aligned with God’s Word. Fooled by culture that redefined right and
wrong until truth became blurred. Deception does not always look dark, it often appears reasonable, appealing, and even comforting. That is why the enemy fights so hard to keep people distracted, disconnected from the Word, and dependent on feelings instead of truth. The battle today is internal. It is a battle over what you will believe.
DECIDE
Being “fooled no more” requires a decision. It requires you to reject what is false, even when it feels familiar. It requires discipline to study God’s Word, not casually, but intentionally. The enemy knows scripture, but he hopes you do not, because if you do not know the truth, you will not recognize when it is being twisted. God’s Word has stood the test of time. It has proven itself through prophecy, history, and transformation.
Scripture declares in Psalm 119:160 (AMP), “The sum of Your word is truth [the full meaning of all Your
precepts], And every one of Your righteous ordinances endures forever.” Truth does not change, even when the world does. You were not created to live in confusion; you were created to walk in truth. Today is your moment to draw a line and say: I will not be deceived. I will not be led by feelings. I will not compromise truth for comfort. I will stand on the unchanging Word of God.
Let’s Pray:
“Lord, thank you for your truth that sets me free. Expose every lie I have believed and every area where I have been deceived. Give me a hunger for your Word and the discipline to walk in it daily. Help me to recognize truth and reject deception. Establish my heart in you so that I will no longer be fooled.
In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”

If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encour-
age you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.
