CCC Women’s Basketball team advances to National tournament
On Saturday, March 7, Cleveland Community College’s women’s basketball team captured the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Region 10 Championship with a victory over the Fayetteville Technical Community College Trojans. “This championship is a reflection of the work these players put in when nobody was watching,” said Head Coach Ford “Scooter” Lawrence. “They earned this moment, and I couldn’t be prouder of how they rep-
resented our program.” With the win, the Yetis advance to the NJCAA Division II Women’s Basketball National Tournament, scheduled for March 16–21 at the Tarlton Complex on the campus of Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. The Yetis entered the regional tournament with strong momentum after closing the regular season with three consecutive wins. They opened tournament play on Thursday, March 5 with a decisive 81–57 victory over Wake Technical Community College, then followed with a 62–46 win against Brunswick Community College on Friday to secure their place in Saturday’s championship matchup.
The team completed the regular season and conference tournament with an impressive overall record of 25–6 and a conference record of 16–4, including a remarkable 12game home winning streak. “From day one, our goal was to build a program that competes the right way every game,” Lawrence said. “This season showed the growth, toughness, and belief our players have in each other, and that’s what made this run special.” The championship marks another milestone for the women’s basketball program. The Yetis first entered the national rankings in week three of the regular season at No. 24 and

remained in the NJCAA Top 25 for eight consecutive weeks. During that stretch, the team climbed as high as No. 21 and ultimately finished the regular season ranked No. 21 nationally. Winning this championship in only the third season of this team’s existence makes it clear that Coach Lawrence is building a program that aims to make its mark in the NJCAA. As the women’s basketball team prepares to compete on the national stage, the CCC community celebrates their achievement and prepares to cheer them on as they continue to represent the college with pride and excellence. STUFFED SHELLS WITH SPINACH AND RICOTTA Makes 6 to 8 servings Salt, to taste 32 jumbo pasta shells 10 cups frozen chopped spinach, thawed 2 cups ricotta, softened 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated (divided), plus
extra to serve 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced 2 eggs, lightly beaten Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 3 3⁄4 cups marinara or spaghetti sauce Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook per package directions until al dente. Rinse pasta in cold water to stop cooking
process, drain well. Squeeze spinach dry. Transfer spinach to large bowl. Add ricotta, 1⁄2 cup Parmesan, garlic, and beaten eggs to bowl. Season with salt and pepper, mix to blend. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spoon 1⁄2 cup marinara sauce evenly over bottom of 9x13 baking dish. Fill each pasta shell with spinach mixture. Place shells, filling side up, in baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining 1⁄2 cup Parmesan. Cover loosely with foil, bake until heated through, about 30 minutes. Spoon remaining sauce over shells. Garnish with Parmesan cheese, if desired, and serve.

Fourth Case of Rabies Identified in Cleveland County This Year SHELBY, NC – On March 6, 2026, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of a skunk that tested positive for rabies. This is the fourth rabid animal identified in the county this year. The animal was found on 1206 Cleveland Avenue, Grover. Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from this animal should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-484-5169 or 980-4845100. Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva. Prevention of rabies is based on protection of susceptible animals and people and appropriate management of persons and animals exposed to rabies: 1. Vaccinate pets. In accordance with NC State Law, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be kept currently vaccinated against rabies and must wear a rabies tag. Cats are the most commonly identified domestic animal with rabies. 2. Control measures for pets exposed to rabies: If pets are exposed to rabies, they should receive a booster dose of rabies vaccine if they are currently vaccinated at the time of exposure. If pets
are not currently vaccinated against rabies when exposed, the animals will be euthanized or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law. 3. Control measures for persons exposed to rabies: Seek medical guidance from your healthcare provider or the local health department if you believe you have been exposed to rabies. 4. Limit stray and feral animals. In the cities of Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and Grover all dogs must be kept on a leash. People should not approach stray or feral dogs or cats. Feral cat colonies should be intensively monitored, and their location reported to Cleveland County Animal Services. 5. Leave wildlife alone. Raccoons, skunks and other wildlife serve as the reservoir for rabies in North Carolina. Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ By Gary Miller The last couple of months have only had a few nice days and hardly any nice ones in a row. This week has been different. March has started off warm and sunny even though a long period of rain is in the forecast. My intentions of perusing the 704-879-4384 woods to determine last year’s deer activity never came about. That will change almost forcibly. Why? Because turkey season opens in a month and for the first few weeks the leaves will not be in full bloom. I GARY MILLER will be able to gain deer information while I’m turkey hunting. And there’s also a third layer. This will also be a good time to look for antler sheds. Not only are these neat finds, but they also give me great hunting information for next deer season. This all means I need to be a multi-tasker when turkey season opens. I often tell people that I’m not a very good multi-tasker. I’m more of a mono-tasker. And while that isn’t totally true, I do function better when there are only two or three things I’m doing at the same time. I compare this to a friend and former colleague of mine. He is a true multi-tasker and great administrator. He shines by getting so many things done simultaneously. We worked well together. I knew what I wanted to accomplish, and he knew how to accomplish it, down to the sickening details. I always noticed the words that the Apostle Paul said. “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” And there you go. He says he does one thing and then lists two things. And that’s how I feel. I do one thing – everything on my to-do list. See? The truth is that the Christian life is exactly this way. It’s one thing done in many different ways. Jesus was once asked what the most important commandment was. Out of all the commandments, laws, and expectations that people debated endlessly, He boiled it all down to one thing: love. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. In 2024 HTC partnered with Kingstown, NC to improve access to active living opportunities and healthy food choices for the town’s 600+ residents. Through this partnership, the Kingstown Community Engagement Group (KCEG) was formed with more than 50 active members, park improvements were complet-
secured to support their vision of a community center. Healthy together Cleveland wants to see similar outcomes for the City of Shelby starting this year. Healthy Together Cleveland will invite residents near the Holly Oak Community for conversations to better understand what their needs, challenges and vision are to improve health. We know meaningful community change takes time, but by bringing residents together and amplifying their voices, we can spark collective action and build momentum toward a healthier, thriving Holly Oak Community. AT&T Makes $10,000 Community Investment to Cleveland Community College’s Digital Navigator Program Cleveland Community College (CCC) has received a $10,000 community investment from AT&T to expand its Digital Navigator Program, further strengthening digital access and literacy efforts for adult learners and community members throughout Cleveland County. CCC is one of only eight colleges selected to receive this funding. On Tuesday, February 24, Kathleen Evans, Regional Director of External Affairs for AT&T, accompanied by Chrisy Hayden, Director of Operations and Strategic Initiatives for the NC Community Colleges Foundation, visited CCC for a check presentation. “Cleveland Community College is doing important work to help ensure more people in Cleveland County can access the tools and skills needed to participate in today’s digital world, and we are thrilled to help expand this program,” said Evans. “At AT&T, we are proud to support CCC’s expansion of its Digital Navigator Program and the hands-on guidance it provides.” The community investment will support expanded digital literacy workshops, one-onone technology assistance, and the purchase of additional computers. It will also support training for additional staff members, increasing CCC’s number of certified digital navigators from three to five. Jaime Henderson, College and Career Readiness Director at CCC, oversees the Digital Navigator Program and emphasized how critical these skills have become in everyday life. “When I think about the impact the digital navigator training makes, it’s huge. Digital technology is much more than just email
these days,” said Henderson. “It’s ordering medications and making appointments for doctor’s visits and even going to the DMV. Today, everything is online.” Thanks to AT&T's support, Henderson will complete digital navigator training with an additional staff member, allowing the College to serve more individuals across the community. Through CCC’s Digital Navigator Program, adult learners participate in group workshops and receive individualized assistance in areas such as basic computer skills, using the internet and email, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Google Docs, social media, career search skills, accessing telehealth appointments, and cybersecurity basics. To date, 402 digital literacy certificates have been earned through the program. As technology continues to shape how we work, learn, and live, collaborations like this ensure that no one in the community is left behind. The Crushing In The Garden (2nd Part of “Dying Before You Rise” Series) God is deeply interested in bringing the best DANYALE out of us. He sees PATTERSON the potential, the calling, and the purpose placed inside our lives. Yet the process he uses is rarely comfortable. Pressure has a way of revealing what is really inside us. It exposes pride we didn’t know we carried, control we refuse to release, and fears we have quietly protected. I Peter 1:7 (NLT) says, “These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold - though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much
praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.” Gethsemane Pressure can also produce something beautiful, if we surrender. The Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated this process fully. The place where Jesus prayed before the cross was called Gethsemane, which literally means oil press. It was a place where olives were crushed so that oil could flow. Isaiah 53:10 (NLT) says, “But it was the LORD’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the LORD’s good plan will prosper in his hands.” That verse can feel difficult to read. The idea that crushing could be part of God’s plan seems uncomfort-
able. But notice the purpose. The crushing was not meaningless. It produced redemption. It produced life. It produced salvation for generations. What about us? We often want the glory without the pressing. We want the oil without the crushing. We want the promise without the process. Yet God knows that the very things we try to avoid are often the things that shape our character, deepen our faith, and prepare us for what he has called us to carry. What feels painful in the moment can produce wisdom, humility, compassion, and spiritual authority that cannot be learned any other way. The oil that flows from a surrendered life has the power to bless, heal, and encourage others. So perhaps the question is
