Pee-cahns. No matter how you pronounce it, the nut of the Carya illinoinensis tree is a fixture in many food recipes and snack dishes.
Getting the flesh out of the pecan shell by hand can be a tedious chore involving everything from a hammer to picks that look like dental tools. A variety of other gadgets make the job a bit easier but still time-consuming and that’s where Shelby Pecan Shop comes to the rescue.
Becky Hord is the current Pecan Shop owner and chief nut-cracker. She’s the third generation of her family to run the business.
“In 1987 my uncle Steve Allen visited some cousins who had a pecan shelling business in Americus, Georgia,” she said. “He got the idea to do it in Shelby and bought three shell-cracking machines from them.”

The current Shelby’s Pecan business is still at 304. N. Post Rd. across from Elizabeth Baptist Chuch, but the building the nuts get cracked in has “He ran the business in a little block house until the state widened the road and tore it down in the late 1980s,” said Hord. “He passed it to my grandfather, H.C. Allen, who ran it in the garage in our current house there until he died in 2000, then I took over.”

Folks bring their pecans to Hord

“We have customers from places like Brevard, Casar, York, and Gaffney,” Hord said. “We also have customers who bring them from the coastal region.”
Where do the customers get their nuts?
“Most of them are from trees people have in their yard,” Hord says.

Incidentally, there are 18 pecan trees on
Hord estimates they process from 1,200 to 1,800 pounds of pecans on a typical Saturday during the November to March shelling season. The charge is fifty cents a pound. Customers drop the nuts off and come back later to receive their pecans sans their shells.
The way the pecans are prepared is fascinating. Inside the garage are five machines- including the three Meyer Automatic Edible Nut Crackers that Uncle Steve bought- that have hoppers on top. The nuts are dumped in there and by a mysterious mechanical

(4th & Final Part of “What’s Love Got To Do With It” Series)

soft heart is not a weak heart. It is a healed heart. It is a heart protected by God, not hardened by pain.
Pray This Prayer:
“Father, I praise you, because you are merciful and kind. I ask that you search my heart and reveal any offense or bitterness I have been holding onto. I choose to forgive those who have hurt me. Remove every hardened place within me and replace it with a soft, loving heart. Heal me so I can love freely again. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD:

One of the number one things that hinders people from being healed, both physically and emotionally, is allowing offense to take root and remain. Offense doesn’t always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it settles quietly in the heart. We get hurt by something someone said, by something they didn’t say, by the way we were treated, or by the way we were overlooked. The offense may be small at first, but if it is not released, it begins to grow and causes us to have a stoney heart. God makes a powerful promise in Ezekiel 36:26 (ESV): “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” A stony heart is hard, guarded, and resistant. A heart of flesh is soft, responsive, and able to feel again. Many of us don’t realize how quickly our hearts can shift from one to the other.
The Festering Wound
We can tell ourselves we are “fine.” We can smile, go through the motions, and continue in the relationship outwardly. But inwardly, we keep touching the wound. We rehearse what happened. We replay conversations. We relive the pain. Instead of healing, the wound festers. Over time, something begins to change
in us. We start withdrawing our love. Our affection becomes limited. Our patience becomes thin. Our words carry an edge. Our presence feels distant. We may not even realize how much hurt and anger we are carrying until it shows up in our tone, our body language, and our lack of warmth. This is how people can be married for 20, 30, or even 40 years and still end up miserable or divorced. The offense was never removed; it was simply buried. Scripture warns us about this in Hebrews 12:15 (NLT) says, “Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.” Bitterness always begins with an offense that was never released.
Forgiveness
Healing requires honesty and surrender. First, we must acknowledge the hurt. Sometimes we don’t even realize how angry or wounded we really are until we slow down and let God reveal it. Second, when appropriate, we should communicate calmly and honestly with the person who hurt us. Truth spoken in love can bring clarity and peace. Most importantly, we must bring the offense to God. We choose to forgive, even when it’s hard, even when the other person has not apologized. We ask God to forgive them, and we release them from the debt we feel they owe us. Then we ask God to remove the offense from our hearts and replace it with his love. A
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Biblebelieving church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

Cleveland Community College is proud to announce its participation in Careers Electric™, a workforce initiative launched by the Siemens Foundation to expand access to high-quality electrical training and build the next generation of skilled electrical workers.
According to a February 17 press release from the Siemens Foundation, Careers Electric™ aims to train 25,000 individuals over the next 10 years to address the growing demand for skilled electricians and electrical technicians across the country. North Carolina was selected as the first state for implementation, with the North Carolina Community College System playing a leading role. The initiative is supported by a $9.2 million investment from the Siemens Foundation that will help community colleges across the state offer electrical technology training.
Through this transformative funding, Cleveland Community College will offer a Summer Electrical Academy from June 8 through July 29, 2026, providing high school juniors and seniors in Cleveland County with a direct pathway into a high-demand, high-wage career field.
“This is more than a summer program,” said Bruce Mack, vice president of academic affairs at CCC. “It’s an opportunity for students to explore a career that offers stability, strong
earning potential, and meaningful work in our community.”
The eight-week academy will immerse students in hands-on electrical systems technology training while allowing them to earn college credit. They will study residential wiring, and motors and controls. Together, these courses prepare students for entry-level positions in residential electrical construction and electrical maintenance of motors and machinery.
Upon completion, participating students will receive college credit for both classes, and a pre-apprenticeship certificate.
Participating students will receive a $2,000 stipend and, for those who need it, up to $350 in transportation assistance.
Thanks to the Siemens Foundation’s investment, CCC can remove financial barriers that often prevent students from exploring technical careers. The stipend and transportation support ensure that students can focus on learning, gaining experience, and envisioning their future in a field that literally powers our communities.
The Summer Electrical Academy is open to all high school juniors and seniors enrolled in Cleveland County, including the County’s high schools, Pinnacle Classical Academy, and homeschooled students.
Space is limited to 16 students, who will be selected through an application process. They must attend one of two interest sessions, offered at CCC on March 2 and April 21 at 5:30 p.m.
They can get started by visiting https:// clevelandcc.edu/summer-electrical-academy-for-ccp-students/ and filling out the form.

From Page 1 method come out with their shells cracked.
“The machines can crack about one hundred pounds each per hour,” Hord says.
The cracked nuts then go into another machine that has a powerful fan that separates the shells from the “flesh” by blowing air over them. The flesh drops into containers and the shells and tidbits of flesh that are left on them go in a box for environmentally friendly deposit in the woods out back.
“The birds and squirrels love it,” Hord said.
Hord has a horde of customers and is wellknown in Shelby and beyond.
“My favorite part of the job is getting to know the customers,” she said.
The Pecan Shop has been around a long time and Hord gives a lot of credit to her grandfather and the nut-cracking philosophy he laid on her when she first tried her hand at it over a quarter century ago.
“Grandpa said leave the price the same at fifty cents a pound and that’s what I have done.”
The Pecan Shop is open 9am to 2pm Saturdays only until March 28. Call 704-487-9934 or 704476-6992 and prepare for a nutty time.
The North Carolina Pecan Music Festival takes place in November and features food trucks, bands, kids’ activities, a car show, arts and crafts, and much more. The event will be held in Whiteville in Columbus County.
The NC Pecan Growers Assoc. promotes research and education of the pecan industry as a commercial crop in our state. The group was founded in 1994 and is based in Mt. Olive.
Pecan trees need a long growing season, and do best in loamy, well-

drained, deep soils, supplied with plenty of water.
The Coastal Plain area of our state east of I-95 best meets these needs.
North Carolina ranks in the top ten states with annual production of between five and six million pounds of pecans. Georgia leads and our state generally comes in seventh grouped with South Carolina and Florida.
Around sixteen different varieties of pecans can be grown in North Carolina. The Cape Fear variety can produce around 55 pounds of nuts on a tree that can live seven years.
Pecans are harvested when the shuck opens, allowing the nuts to drop. Mechanical aids can be used to help speed nut fall once the shucks are open. These devices range from a long pole used to shake small limbs to large commercial branch or trunk shakers that cause nuts to fall in a very short time. For a small-scale operation, sheets can be spread under the tree to catch the falling nuts. Nuts also can be picked up with small, hand operated harvesters, larger push-propelled harvesters ranging from 12 to 48 inches wide for small-scale plantings or large commercial mechanical nut harvesters. Nuts harvested by hand should be picked up every other day to prevent the nuts from molding or being destroyed or removed by pests.

“You
Pecans are good for you
1. Pecans contain particularly potent antioxidants
Pecans are rich in polyphenol antioxidants, specifically flavonoids, which have been tied to heart benefits. In fact, the nuts have more than twice the flavonoid content found in almonds, cashews, and pistachios, and seven times the amount in walnuts. Compared to other nuts, pecans also have the highest levels of gamma-tocopherols, which is a form of vitamin E and another key antioxidant.
2. They’re also rich in minerals
Pecans are an excellent source of thiamin and zinc, as well as manganese and copper. One ounce (about 19 halves) supplies 60% of the Daily Value (DV) for manganese and 40% of the DV for copper. Manganese helps regulate blood sugar and is needed for healthy bones. This mineral also helps form collagen, which gives skin its firmness and elasticity. Copper aids in iron absorption, and works with iron to help the body form red blood cells. It also supports immunity and helps keep blood vessels, nerves, and bones healthy.
3. And they’re naturally sweet
One ounce of pecans contains just one gram of sugar. But compared to other nuts, pecans taste sweeter. That means they can help satisfy a sweet craving with no or less added sugar.

It seems, years ago, I simply reacted when hunting season came. The preparation phase lasted only about a month. The reason was because I hunted area farms. Unlike many hardwoods’ areas, farmland hunting is fairly predictable. The deer are basically going to be there from year to year. I know this cuts out the need for a lot of scouting articles, but the truth is the truth. For instance, I have heard all my life that oak trees only produce acorns every three years or so. Now, I’ve not studied this, so don’t send me mean emails. What I have discovered is this. If there is an oak tree on the side of a field, and that field is fertilized by the farmer every year, that tree will have acorns every year. I have also noticed this. If that same farmer has several cows and those cows fertilize around that oak tree every year (if you know what I mean), that tree will have acorns every year as well. Things just are a little different on the farm. And what about that wonderful spring gobbler? I’ve hunted them in the deep woods and on the farm and I can tell you, once again, if that farmer has cows and he feeds those cows a little sweet feed; he is creating one of the best management areas for turkeys. What each hunter needs to realize is that each cow pie is a natural bait pile that a turkey will eventually find. Somehow, I just can’t see this technique being given print space in any outdoor magazine; but again, that’s life on the farm; a little different and, in my opinion, a lot better. The farmer has learned that nothing is wasted – even waste. He has learned that what the rest of the world sees as worthless and even unmentionable is the catalyst for growth and the medium for consistency. He has learned that waste is not waste. It is fertilizer!
What all of us need to remember is there is nothing that happens in our life that is useless or worthless. God never looks at something we have done and says, “I can’t use that.” He uses everything and has promised that even the things we consider of no use, He will use to grow our life into one that is consistent in bearing spiritual fruit year after year. As I like to say, not only can God make something out of nothing, but He can make something out of everything. And that means what looks like cow pies to you, is fertilizer to God.
