Shelby Civil Air Patrol Squadron active in the sky and on the ground By Alan Hodge October 17 saw several rocket launches take place at the Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport. The launches were not of the Space X variety, but a field exercise conducted by the Shelby Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron. Squadron Character Development Officer Capt. Kelly Higdon described the exciting and educational day. “On Saturday, October 17, the squadron conducted its rocketry launch and movie night,” she said. “Squadron members arrived at 3:00 pm to launch their Estes Rockets. Leading up to this event, senior member Capt. John Higdon, had the opportunity to work with cadets to prepare for the launch. Cadet SMSgt. Zander Meyers commented that he and Cadet CMSgt. Howard Wray were excited to launch their two-stage rocket, while other cadets looked forward to assembling and launching their Estes rockets.”

The rocket shots had a deeper meaning than fireworks. “Readiness and adjustments help prepare members for real life situations,” Capt. Kelly Higdon said. “In the case of rocket launches, the wind measured at 35 knots that afternoon, which caused the launchers to adjust for direction and anticipate different landing locations.” The launches also carried a reward. “Each cadet had to have three successfully launched rockets in order to meet the final requirement C/SMSgt. B. Wray, and C/SMSgt. Ayala measure the of earning the altitude of the launched rockets and report in the data CAP Rocketry to the staging station. Badge,” Capt.
Greg Poston of Shelby is 64 years old and says joining the Civil Air Patrol is one of the best things he’s done since retiring. Kelly Higdon said. “A successful launch required the rocket to launch and deploy a parachute.” Following the rocket launches in the chilly and windy afternoon, cadets came inside to enjoy a covered dish meal and a viewing of October Sky.

training by members of the Army ROTC. The training exercise was led by ROTC cadets Caden Stratton and Noah Yonkske. They conducted the US Army Standard of physical training See CIVIL, Page 2 Like Us On

CIVIL From Page 1 which included deadlifts, push-ups, planks, sprintdirect-carry relays, and concluded with a 2-mile run. While this training was more stringent than the CAP monthly physical training, the additional challenge encouraged the CAP cadets to support each other as they demonstrated feats of strength and endurance. “Being able to partner with other agencies, has permitted the squadron to have more connections with the community,” said Capt. Kelly Higdon. “The Shelby Composite Squadron would like to thank the ROTC for their hosting and leading the physical training this month.” But the Shelby Composite Squadron, in fact the Civil Air Patrol as a whole, is not just for youthful members. It’s open to folks of all ages who enjoy the activities and camaraderie. “Our squadron has several couples, parents and children, and siblings,” says Capt. Kelly Higdon. Retiree Greg Poston, 64, of Shelby is a member and says joining up has been great. Poston has experience in amateur radio communications that he’s putting to good use in the CAP. “Back in June of this year, I was working at a National Association for Amateur Radio (ARRL) “Field Day” event, where anyone (non-licensed) could get on Amateur Radio (aka Ham Radio) and talk on the VHF and HF bands,” Poston said. “At the same time Captain Patterson, Commander of the local Civil Air Patrol Squadron in Shelby gave the cadets an assignment to attend the “Field Day” event at the County Fairgrounds and get some exposure and learn about a unique communication experience because com-

(Photos provided) munications is also a vital skill used every day in the CAP for Search and Rescue Mission, Point of Distribution Missions, and any Aircraft Mission.” At the radio event, Poston met a Shelby Composite Squadron member who invited him to one of their meetings. “Since I’m retired and have time, and have a love to mentor, share, teach, learn, and enjoy life, well, the Civil Air Patrol is a perfect fit,” said Poston. “My goal at our local squadron is to know each cadet and parents on a personal level. Lead them through example and learn from them as well. I fulfilled the basic obligations to join and submitted all the paperwork. Shortly, I was giving a CAP Membership card with my own ID Number. After finishing all my Level One training I was placed into a Speciaity Tract 214 Communications Technician Rating. Now I am entering my Level Two professional training for leadership skills and further my radio training to hold my first rank as 2nd Lieutenant.” More about the Shelby Composite Squadron The Shelby Composite Squadron began in the 1960s and has a proud
history in Cleveland Country. The squadron meets each Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:30 pm at their squadron building located at the Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport. In addition to weekly meetings, the squadron also conducts one Saturday activity each month. The weekly meetings follow a schedule that rotates around these themes each month. Week 1 is leadership, Week 2 is aerospace education, Week 3 is physical training, and Week 4 is character development. These weekly lessons help train the cadets and senior members to be prepared leaders within the community, state, and nation. The Shelby Composite Squadron currently has 22 cadets and 18 senior members. Interested in joining the CAP? Visit the squadron during a Tuesday evening meeting. Contact Capt. Kelly Higdon, kelly. higdon@ncwgcap.org, for more information. For information on other CAP activities and lore, visit https://shelby.cap. gov/.

Carolina Pottery Festival returns November 7 The Carolina Pottery Festival returns for its 26th year on Saturday, November 7, 2026 from 10:30am to 4 p.m. at the LeGrand Center, 1800 E. Marion St. in Shelby, NC. This pottery festival attracts crowds of pottery lovers with over 45 well-known regional potters showing and selling their work. It is one of the largest “pottery only” festivals in the southeast with a wide range of traditional and contemporary work that is functional, decorative and sculptural. Artists are on hand to talk about their inspiration, methods of creation and answer any questions. The festival was started by potters, for potters and continues to celebrate and honor the rich heritage of pottery in our region. “This is an excellent way to see so many different styles of pottery all under one roof,” stated Bobbi Black, one of the Festival founders. “Our goal has always been to showcase a wide variety of pottery and to give customers the opportunity to meet the potters while they shop.” The pottery festival is coordinated by the Cleveland County Arts Council. “We are thrilled to be back this year with many returning potters as well as potters who are new to our festival,” commented Stephanie Pasour, Executive Director of the Arts Council. Parking is convenient and free. Admission is $10.00, with those 17 and under being free. Tickets may be purchased in advance on-line at https://

The Halloween holiday is quickly approaching, and many in Cleveland County have already been participating in fun and spooky activities. Before you head out to participate in trick-or-treating, haunted houses or costume parties, keep in mind these tips from Sheriff Norman to help you and your family stay safe while you enjoy the festivities. If you plan to go out in search of treats, parents and guardians should take the time to check their local sex offender registry at https://sexoffender.ncsbi.gov/. At this webpage you can view a map of registered sex offenders’ addresses in your area and also set up an alert that will notify you if a sex offender moves to your area. Once you have determined the best route for treat-seeking, Sheriff Norman hopes you will follow these basic safety tips to keep your little ghouls and goblins safe: • When choosing a Halloween costume, pick one with bright colors or add reflective tape so children can be seen in low light. • Make sure masks or costumes do not obstruct vision or movement. • Always make sure there is an adult present with younger kids while trick-or-treating, and older kids know to only visit familiar areas. • Never accept homemade treats, even if it is from a home in a familiar neighborhood. • Carefully inspect all candy at home before eating. Discard any that has been previously opened, tampered with, or have labels that do not appear to be from the original manufacturer. • Only approach homes that are brightly lit. Unfortunately, Halloween is one of the deadliest days of the year for pedestrians, so if you plan to be driving around your neighborhood amongst the spooky trick-or-treaters, make sure to remain vigilant to prevent unnecessary trag-
edy. When driving on Halloween, remember: • Make sure your headlights are on. • Take an extra look at crosswalks and intersections for groups of trickor-treaters crossing the road. • Drive slowly through residential areas, even if you do not see any trickor-treaters. Alan Norman • Watch for children who may dart into Cleveland County Sheriff the street. • Do not text and drive. It is against the law in North Carolina. • Do not wear costumes while driving that may obstruct your vision or make it difficult for you to react quickly behind the wheel. If you plan to stay inside and hand out candy rather than joining the festive crowds, you can still help keep little ones safe: • Keep your porch and driveway clear of any tripping hazards. • Make sure your porch is well lit for trick-or-treaters. • Only hand out unopened, pre-packaged candy and treats. • Avoid potential fire-related accidents by using battery operated candles or glow sticks in your jack-o-lanterns and other décor. • Make sure all pets are contained when you open your door. “Halloween is a great time for families and friends to celebrate the fall season, which means there may be a large number of people out and about enjoying the festivities,” noted Sheriff Norman. “It is important to take extra precautions on busy holidays like this one to help you and everyone in our community can have a safe and enjoyable time. We can work together to make sure that the only scary thing about this Halloween is the spooky decorations and ghoulish costumes!”

“I didn’t want to do that” (3rd Part of “Confessions of a Pumpkin” Series) Many people carve their pumpkins into lanterns or use them to make pies, but not me. I wanted DANYALE my pumpkin PATTERSON to become a planter that would hold beautiful flowers. I thought it was a great idea, but if my pumpkin had a voice, it might have had a different opinion. It probably would have said, “I didn’t expect to become a planter. I wanted to do something else.” How many times do we pursue aspirations that do not fulfill us or simply do not work out the way we hoped? Sometimes what feels like a disappointment may actually be part of God’s greater plan for us. For example, in the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, the main character, George, thought becoming rich and
traveling the world would bring him the most joy. Instead, he felt stuck in a small town and believed his life had little meaning. Yet he saved his brother’s life, kept an elderly man from accidentally poisoning someone, and helped save the town from a greedy businessman. George’s life did not look the way he imagined, but it was still full of purpose and good works. Ephesians 2:10 (NLT), “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Surrender to the Process Although it was an arduous process to cut away the junk inside my pumpkin, I was very proud of how beautiful the pumpkin planter turned out, and I received many compliments on it. In the same way, God is often cutting away things we do not need in our souls: issues, wrong mindsets, and sin that
hinder us from becoming who he wants us to be. He is pleased with the work he accomplishes in us. Sometimes we complain about the process or try to avoid it, but if we surrender to the work God is doing in our lives, we may be amazed by what he creates. We can become beautiful vessels that shine brightly for God’s kingdom. We may also discover that the role God has for us fits us perfectly when we are willing to submit to his plan. Jeremiah 18:6 (NLT) says, “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand.” Confession: “Lord, you are the potter and I am the clay. Make me into what you would have me to be for your purpose.” CONNECTING TO GOD: If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encour-
age you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer. Did you know? Millions of dogs enter shelters and rescues in the United States each year. According to the ASPCATM, 2.8 million dogs entered shelters and rescues in 2025. While the ASPCATM reports euthanasia rates for shelter dogs decreased by 7 percent between 2024 and 2025, 320,000 dogs were still euthanized in 2025. Dogs, and large dogs in particular, also are spending more time in shelters than they were as recently as five years ago. The extended time in shelters has led to issues concerning shelter capacity, as many facilities have limited space for new animals. Prospective dog owners are urged to consider adoption when looking for a dog, as adoption can help prevent euthanization and alleviate space issues at local shelters. Adoption also tends to be less expensive than purchasing a dog directly from a breeder.

By Gary Miller I’ve always considered myself a prepared hunter – some would say over prepared. I very rarely go into the woods without my backpack. During the colder months this is especially true. Since I’m never absolutely sure as to what the weather will bring, I take just about everything. My backpack is over three-thousand cubic inches. I strategically place additional clothes in it or strapped to it. I carry additional socks, gloves, headgear, GARY MILLER and even an extra base-layer shirt just in case I sweat too much while getting to the stand. The nooks and crannies are stuffed full of other things like snacks, a drink, reading glasses, a book, paper, pen, and my phone. And there’s also my umbrella and rain gear. In addition to all of this I carry a fanny pack as well; full of calls, scents, rope, compass, trimmers, and anything else that suits my fancy. Now some of you are already laughing at my overkill. You’re not the first. I’ve never weighed my gear, but I figure it really doesn’t matter because the burden of the load is a small price to pay in order to be a more prepared, and even satisfied, hunter. Sometimes the weight is cumbersome. Walking the hills most assuredly puts a toll on my legs, but as the season progresses it eventually becomes almost unnoticeable. Some of you, right now, are carrying a load of a different kind. It’s a burden that weighs on your heart and mind. It may be one you have caused or one you had nothing to do with. These burdens come through all sorts of circumstances from sickness, the concern over a child, the loss of a job, divorce, or a host of other things. Your mind is questioning the purpose of such a burden and the devil is quick to answer your question by casting the guilt squarely in your lap and telling you, “If you had only (fill in the blank) this would have never happened, and now God will abandon you to suffer the consequences alone.” The Bible is clear about the devil and his ways. It says he is the father of lies and his purpose is to destroy your faith by causing you to doubt and disbelieve the Word of God. The truth of the scriptures assures us of several things. They tell us we are loved by God, He will never leave us, and that He has promised to bring good to our lives even in the midst of our burdens. He has also promised us peace. Having peace, many times, doesn’t come from the burden being taken away but by changing our mind concerning it. My backpack was not a burden because I knew in my mind it would make me better prepared. The weight was the same, but my mind counted it worthwhile. What you may need right now is not your burden removed but only to see it from the perspective of God. It is not bigger than He. In fact, it is simply a tool in His hands to prepare you for what He is making you to be. Ask God to give you peace in your trial. The Bible says He will give it in such a way that it will surprise even you. Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org Gary Miller has written Outdoor Truths articles for 24 years. He has also written five books which include compilations of his articles and a father/ son devotional. He also speaks at wild-game dinners and men’s events for churches and associations. Meet PHOENIX Male • 6 Years Old • 40 Lbs I‘m Phoenix—call me Phinny! I’m a 6-year-old white and blue American Staffordshire Terrier who’s affectionate, cuddly, and loyal to my people. Clifford’s Army Rescue saved me after another dog attacked me and injured my face. I had to have my nostrils opened back up and some surgery to try to protect my teeth. I found my perfect home and life was wonderful. My human mom was always with me and we just had the best life. Unfortunately she died unexpectedly. I’m already neutered, housetrained, and crate trained, so I’m ready to settle right in with you. I do best as your one and only pup (no other dogs or cats for me), but I’m wonderful with kids and love being close to my family. Could you be my new family?
