Polkville’s Elliott Supply celebrates their 50th year in business By Alan Hodge “If a customer enters our store as a stranger, we want them to leave as a friend.” That’s what Bob Elliott and his wife Hilda say is the philosophy that’s allowed them to keep their lawn equipment sales and service business, Elliott Supply Inc., alive and well for half a century. To celebrate that milestone, dozens of Elliott Supply friends, customers, and kin gathered for a barbecue lunch with all the fixin’s on Friday, October 16. The event was marked by an aura of good will and good food that seemed a lot like a church homecoming minus the singing. Located at 2301 W. Stagecoach Rd. near the Polkville intersection at NC Hwy. 226, Elliott Supply is an upper Cleveland County oasis of sorts for folks who need to buy everything from mowers to string trimmers, and have their stuff worked on when maintenance or repair time rolls around. Even though this year marks the 50th anniversary of the current business, the roots of Elliott Supply go back to 1967 when Bob was working in the Polkville auto parts store, Elliott Auto Parts, with his uncle, Joe El-

Hilda explained how the business model morphed into what it is today. “We realized we could not compete with the auto parts chain stores,” she said. “So, Fred encouraged Bob to go with chainsaws.” On January 1, 1977, the Elliotts moved into their present location Nick Austell brought this ancient chainsaw and the business exinto Elliott Supply for a tune up. panded its scope.

Elliott From Page 1 “I’ve been here ten years and love it,” he said. “Getting to know the people and the community is the best part.” Other employees include technicians Tyler Wease and Logan Clark. Elliott Supply is proving multi-generational. “Most of our ten grandchildren have helped too,” Hilda said. “They do odd jobs, sweep, and inventory. Bob is patient with them.” Elliott Supply has a fiercely loyal lawn equipment ownership following. Customer Gary White was at the 50th anniversary celebration partaking of the barbeque. “I have been a customer for 45 years,” White said. “I always buy my chainsaws and weed eaters here. This business has always been a big part of the community.” The future looks bright for Elliott Supply. The day of the anniversary luncheon, customers needing parts and service were vying with barbecue eaters for Hilda and Bob’s attention. The stream of folks in and out the door was non-stop. “If not for our loyal customers we could not have done it,” Hilda observed. Bob pondered the busy scene. “It’s a livin’,” he said, tongue in cheek. “But seriously, I have worked 50 years doing what I wanted to do.” There you have it, Elliott Supply is more than a store with great lawn equipment machinery and tools and employees who know them inside and out,

Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) wrote a letter urging the U.S. Department of the Navy to name an upcoming ship the USS Kings Mountain, honoring the Battle of Kings Mountain in North Carolina. Fought on October 7, 1780, the battle was a pivotal American victory during the Revolutionary War, with Thomas Jefferson describing it as the “turn of the tide of suc-
cess” in the War of Independence. “As our Nation marks its 250th birthday, that history deserves recognition in the naval fleet. The USS Kings Mountain is a natural fit for an amphibious assault ship or amphibious transport dock, consistent with the Navy's tradition of naming these platforms after significant military victories... The communities of Western
North Carolina take great pride in this heritage,” Congressman Moore wrote in the letter. Congressman Tim Moore represents the 14th Congressional District of North Carolina, including Cleveland, Gaston, Burke, and Rutherford Counties, as well as parts of Mecklenburg and Polk Counties. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD DROP-OFF LOCATIONS OPEN NOVEMBER 16-23
Since 1993, these gift-filled shoeboxes have been delivered to millions of children around the world. In 2026, Operation Christmas Child hopes to collect enough shoeboxes to reach 12.8 million children. Across North Carolina, there are Operation Christmas Child drop-off locations opening in just a few weeks! Each location will collect shoebox gifts—filled with fun toys, school supplies, and personal care items—for children in need around the world.
Volunteers are preparing to collect Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts during National Collection Week, Nov. 16 – 23. Nearly 5,000 drop-off locations will open across the country in November, and shoebox packers can find their local drop-off locations across North Carolina. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has been collecting and delivering gift-filled shoeboxes to children including many who are suffering from war, poverty, disease and disaster. Operation ChristC mas Child hopes to reach 12.8 million children in 2026 with the hope of Jesus. Shoebox packing is fun for individuals, families and groups! Find a step-by-step guide on the How to Pack a Shoebox webpage. The project partners with local churches across the globe to deliver these tangible expressions of God’s love to children in need. Participants can donate $10 per shoebox gift online through “Follow Your Box” and receive a tracking label to discover its destination. “Shoebox gifts may seem simple, but they have an eternal impact. Each box is an opportunity to tell a boy or girl in need about the true meaning of Christmas,” said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse. “I’ve delivered these boxes around the world, and I never get tired of seeing the joy that they bring—even in the midst of disasters, war, and poverty.” Participants can find the nearest drop-off location and hours of operation as they make plans to drop off their shoebox gifts. The online lookup tool is searchable by City or ZIP code. Signs at each location will identify the drop-off. Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, seeks to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world and, together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 244 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 175 countries and territories. Submitted by Dolores Jen

The Carolina Pottery Festival will be held on Saturday, November 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the LeGrand Center, 1800 E. Marion St., Shelby. (Photos provided)
Carolina Pottery Festival returns November 7 The Carolina Pottery Festival returns for its 26th year on Saturday, November 7, 2026 from 10:30am to 4 p.m. at the LeGrand Center, 1800 E. Marion St. in Shelby, NC. This pottery festival attracts crowds of pottery lovers with over 45 well-known regional potters showing and selling their work. It is one of the largest “pottery only” festivals in the southeast with a wide range of traditional and contemporary work that is functional, decorative and sculptural. Artists are on hand to talk about their inspiration, methods of creation and
answer any questions. The festival was started by potters, for potters and continues to celebrate and honor the rich heritage of pottery in our region. “This is an excellent way to see so many different styles of pottery all under one roof,” stated Bobbi Black, one of the Festival founders. “Our goal has always been to showcase a wide variety of pottery and to give customers the opportunity to meet the potters while they shop.” The pottery festival is coordinated by the Cleveland County Arts Council. “We are thrilled to be back this year with many
returning potters as well as potters who are new to our festival,” commented Stephanie Pasour, Executive Director of the Arts Council. Parking is convenient and free. Admission is $10.00, with those 17 and under being free. Tickets may be purchased in advance on-line at https:// ccartscouncil.org/products/carolina-pottery-festival- stickets?var iant=48324696899773 For more information, contact the Cleveland County Arts Council, 704-484-2787 or visit https://www.facebook.com/ ClevelandCountyArtsCouncil/

My favorite time of the year starts right now! It begins on Halloween and goes for about 6 weeks. In deer hunting terms these few weeks involve the pre-rut, rut, post-rut, and secondary rut. Each of these periods offers some exciting times to be in the woods. And if one is limited in the amount of days he or she can hunt, concentrating on this window of opportunity will provide the best chances to GARY MILLER bring home a trophy. In years past I couldn’t wait for opening day. I was not only looking for meat to put in the freezer, I also thought that one big buck might just show up anytime. Therefore my “window of opportunity” started the end of September and ran through January. This was not only a long period of time but it was also very draining on me physically and on every other area of my life. I was obsessed and every day I couldn’t go hunting, I knew would be the day Mr. Bruiser Buck would walk by. I’m glad I got older and wiser, and slightly more mature. Today, I still love to hunt but I understand that not only do I have more important life responsibilities; I can save my time and energy for a much smaller period of time and still have fun and be successful. It’s the quality over quantity thing. It’s also just being a better manager of life. The benefit I have that some do not is that hunting and fishing are important for what I do as a writer and speaker. I know that sounds very convenient, and my wife is not very impressed by that excuse either, but nevertheless these experiences give me fuel to write and help me identify with those that I speak to. It allows me not so much to tell my story but understand theirs – and yours. This is also the story of Christianity and Jesus in particular. It is the story of commonality. It is the story of shared experience. it is the story of one window of opportunity that Jesus took – willingly, that gave Him understanding of our story. You see, we live in world that is full of suffering and the most difficult question to answer for those who undergo such tremendous suffering is “why.” Why God, do you allow such pain? Why God, is there so much evil? Why God, are there so many people who are without? God has not chosen to give us very satisfying answers at times, but what He did choose to do was identify with our suffering. And in one small window of time, Jesus (God in the flesh) died; not only so He could tell us of His story of salvation for all, but so that He could understand our story of pain as well. Whatever we may say about Jesus, there is one thing we cannot say… we cannot say He knows nothing of our suffering. And for that He stands alone among all other religions.
