Shelby Rotary Club celebrates 100 years of service The Shelby Rotary Club is celebrating its centennial year. The Club was chartered on March 19, 1927, and John F. Schenck Jr., president of Lawndale Mills, served as its first president from 1927 to 1928. Jim Morgan is the Club’s 100th president. “I am proud to be president of the Shelby Rotary Club in its centennial year as we celebrate our club’s 100 years of service to the community and Rotary’s service to the world,” Morgan said. “I look forward to what our club has to offer over the next 100 years.” Rotary International focuses its work on seven areas: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, supporting education, saving mothers and children, growing

local economies, and protecting the environment. Rotary has also long led the global effort to eradicate polio. The Club’s first centennial project is a Peace Monument to be placed at Depot Park, located on the Harmony Trail on N. Morgan Street in Shelby. ROTARY From Page 1 Leatherwood Botanical Gardens at Hanna Park. Leatherwood served as president of the Shelby Rotary Club and was the first president of the North Carolina Extension Cleveland County Master Gardener program. Club members helped plant trees when the garden was created. The Club is also helping provide clean water in Pakistan. After severe flooding left communities in urgent need of safe drinking water, the Club raised funds to purchase two solar-powered water purification units. In 1956 the Shelby Rotary Club donated the Shelby Express train to the Shelby City Park. Tens of thousands of children and adults have enjoyed riding on the train. In 2024, the Club launched the Impact Club,

which gives volunteers opportunities to take part in community projects. Under the leadership of Bailey Ledford and Rod Powell, the Impact Club has installed a free outdoor library at the Washington Outreach Ministries food distribution center. A second library will open in Kingstown later this month. The Club provides administrative support for the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program at Gardner-Webb University. Students sponsored by the 51 Rotary clubs in District 7680 attend a weeklong program to build leadership skills and learn how to apply Rotary’s FourWay Test in their own lives. On March 19, 2027, the Shelby Rotary Club will hold a Centennial Celebration Gala to recognize its 100 years of service. District Rotary officers and other dignitaries will attend.

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ By Gary Miller I can remember the first time I decided to learn to hunt with a bow. I was about 30 years old. Yeah, I know this seems old to some of you but at that time I did more fishing than hunting. I can also remember my friend Tim easing my mind concerning my ability to use one. He was one of the owners of the store I frequented. To me, the complexity of this GARY MILLER weapon seemed overwhelming. His calm admonition to me was that once he tuned my bow and adjusted the sights, the principle would be the same as my gun. Put the sight on the target, hold steady, and slowly squeeze the trigger. Of course, he was right and the more I practiced the more I became comfortable with the whole process. Since that day, I have hunted with archery equipment more than any other way. And it all started with one thing: encouragement. It is perhaps the most powerful tool in existence. It has been the single greatest catalyst for more inventions, discoveries, and accomplishments, than any other motivation. Much of the time it is the difference between success and failure and always between fatigue and perseverance. Encouragement is the offense on any team. It does not allow one to stand still but is ever motioning to gain ground. I remember the time my granddaughter came in from soccer practice. The only thing she mentioned was how the coach bragged on her. What do you think that caused her to do? Gain ground. Encouragement is the gift that keeps on giving. Are you an encourager? There is absolutely nothing you will ever do that will move your interests forward more than encouraging those who work with you or for you. And while encouragement may even take monetary sacrifice, it will always return in multiplied and varied profits. Is it any wonder the number one reason God wanted his people to come together each week was to be encouraged and to encourage others? It shames me how we have twisted this original idea into a knock-off from the Old Testament law. We have placed everything else above this main purpose. Instead of worship, praise, giving, and preaching becoming the means for encouragement when we gather, we have made each of these an end in themselves. And many times we even do it at the expense of encouragement. There is one thing for sure, when encouragement becomes absent so will the people who need it. Everything else they will be able to do at home. If you want your faith family to gain ground, encouragement will do the trick. You can do it! Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org

Elijah Propst, an Eagle Scout candidate from Kings Mountain.

Eagle Scout Project Transforms the Grounds at Life Enrichment Center Kings Mountain with New Enrichment Garden The Life Enrichment Center in Kings Mountain recently received a meaningful and beautifully executed improvement thanks to the dedication of Elijah Propst, an Eagle Scout candidate from Kings Mountain. Elijah, son of Joshua and Stephanie Propst, completed a major service project that has transformed part of the center’s outdoor space into what staff are proudly calling the Enrichment Garden. After assisting with a project here last year, Elijah reached out more than a year ago to begin planning his own project—one that would enhance the outdoor environment for participants, visitors, and the community. Elijah took full ownership of the project from start to finish. He organized the design, coordinated volunteers, and conducted fundraising to cover the cost of all materials. His leadership ensured that every detail was thoughtfully planned and executed. The completed project reflects several major improvements including rearranging

the garden area into a more organized and functional space. New gravel was laid, creating a new path to the newly installed planter boxes and sitting benches. These improvements help make the garden accessible and safe to all, and support various gardening activities throughout the year. The Enrichment Garden is already becoming a favorite spot for participants, offering a peaceful place for outdoor programs, gardening activities, and quiet moments of connection. Life Enrichment Center extends heartfelt appreciation to Elijah for his hard work, leadership, and commitment to serving in his community. His project has created a lasting impact that will benefit the center for years to come and reflects the true spirit of Scouting— service, responsibility, and making a difference where it matters most.

Confessions of a pumpkin The fall season is a lot of fun, especially with all of the activities, beautiful decorations, pumpkin DANYALE patches, and PATTERSON delicious desserts. Pumpkins seem to be everywhere. We decorate with them, bake with them, carve them, and even take pictures with them. But have you ever wondered what a pumpkin would say if it could talk? I think one of its first confessions might be, “I was comfortable in the patch, but I was picked for more.” Think about it. A pumpkin begins in the patch, but the patch is not its final destination. At some point, it has to be picked. It has to leave the place where it grew to fulfill the purpose for which someone chose it. The same is true for us. John 15:16 (ESV) says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.” Jesus said, “I chose you.” But he did not stop there. He also said, “I appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.” Being chosen comes with purpose, and purpose often requires movement.

The Patch is Just a Season God never intended for us to remain in the same place spiritually, emotionally, or purposefully forever. There are seasons when God allows us to grow in the patch. We learn. We heal. We mature. We develop. We build our faith. But eventually, God says, “It’s time to go.” Matthew 4:19 (ESV) says, “And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’” Following requires movement. Sometimes following God means changing the way we think or changing our behavior. Sometimes it means leaving a place, beginning something new, making a difficult decision, or walking through a door we never expected to open. Our job is to obey and move in the direction God is calling us to go. As we follow him, he continues shaping us into the people He created us to become. Furthermore, our obedience is not only about us. There are people who need what God has placed inside of us. There are assignments connected to our obedience. There are opportunities we may never discover until we are willing to move. The pumpkin cannot fulfill its purpose if it refuses to leave the patch, and neither can we. So this week, ask yourself: Where have I become too

comfortable? What is God asking me to leave, begin, change, or pursue? The patch may have been a great place to grow, but you were picked for more. Confession: “I wasn’t made to stay in the patch. God chose me, appointed me, and I am ready to go and bear fruit.” CONNECTING TO GOD: If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer. (Enjoy these devotionals by Danyale Patterson. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare[b] and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord...Jeremiah 29:11-14

2 roasted red bell peppers or ¾ cup chopped jarred roasted peppers 1 (15-oz.) can chickpeas ¼ cup fresh lemon juice ¼ cup tahini 1 small garlic clove, minced 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for serving ½ teaspoon ground cumin Pinch cayenne pepper, optional 2 to 3 Tbsp. water or aquafaba Salt to taste • In the bowl of a food processor, combine the tahini and lemon juice and process for 1 minute. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl, then process for 30 seconds more. This extra time helps “whip” or “cream” the tahini, making the hummus smooth and creamy. • Add the olive oil, minced garlic, cumin, cayenne, and a ½ teaspoon of salt to the whipped tahini and lemon juice. Process for 30 seconds, scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl, and then process for another 30 seconds or until well blended. • Add half of the chickpeas to the food processor and process for 1 minute. Scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl, then add the remaining chickpeas and process them until thick and relatively smooth, 1 to 2 minutes. • Add the roughly chopped roasted peppers, saving 1 to 2 pieces for use as a garnish. Process until smooth. • Hummus will likely be too thick and still have tiny bits of chickpea. To fix this, slowly add 2 to 3 tablespoons of cold water or aquafaba with the food processor turned on until you reach the perfect consistency. Taste and adjust as needed. • Finely chop reserved peppers. Spoon hummus into a bowl, make a small well in the middle and add the chopped peppers. •Store hummus in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to one week. Freeze, covered with a thin layer of olive oil, up to 1 month.

Twenty-First Case of Rabies Identified in Cleveland County (Shelby) On September 30, 2026, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of a bat that tested positive for rabies. This is the twenty-first rabid animal case identified in the county this year. The animal was found on Casar-Lawndale Road in Casar. Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from this animal should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-484-5169 or 980-484-5100. Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva. Prevention of rabies is based on protection of susceptible animals and people and appropriate management of persons and animals exposed to rabies: 1. Vaccinate pets. In accordance with NC State Law, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be kept currently vaccinated against rabies and must wear a rabies tag. Cats are the most commonly identified domestic animal with rabies. 2. Control measures for pets exposed to rabies: If pets are exposed to rabies, they should receive a booster dose of rabies vaccine if they are currently vaccinated at the time of exposure. If pets are not currently vaccinated against rabies when exposed, the animals will be euthanized or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law. 3. Control measures for persons exposed to rabies: Seek medical guidance from your healthcare provider or the local health department if you believe you have been exposed to rabies. 4. Limit stray and feral animals. In the cities of Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and Grover all dogs must be kept on a leash. People should not approach stray or feral dogs or cats. Feral cat colonies should be intensively monitored, and their location reported to Cleveland County Animal Services. 5. Leave wildlife alone. Raccoons, skunks and other wildlife serve as the reservoir for rabies in North Carolina. Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior should call Cleveland County Animal Services at 704-481-9884. Submitted by DeShay D. Oliver
