Cleveland Co. Agricultural Fair coming to Shelby October 1 By Alan Hodge Mark your calendar because the 102nd annual Cleveland County Agricultural Fair will open its gates on Thursday, October 1 at 3pm. The fair is set to run through Sunday, October 11. The fairgrounds are at 1751 E. Marion St., Shelby. This year’s theme is Red, White and Moo. What can people expect to experience and enjoy at the event? A wide variety of food for one thing. The tantalizing aromas waft over the fairgrounds beckoning hungry fairgoers. The fair is known for its traditional foods like turkey legs, barbecue, roasted corn on the cob, funnel cakes, vinegar fries, ham biscuits and cotton candy, as well as foods like giant pork chops on a stick
This year’s fair will feature dozens of thrilling rides. (photos provided) and deep-fried candy bars. Ready for rides and games of skill? The fair will have over 50 rides and booths. Once again, Reithoffer Shows will be providing amusements this year. Mild to wild, the rides are better than ever, and the huge Ferris wheel is always a hit. Other things to see at the fair include the demolition derby, wild west showand pig races.
There will also be autos, farm and lawn equipment on display. Of course, agriculture is a big part of the fair with over 75 exhibitors. Folks from far and wide bring their sheep, goats, cattle, poultry, horses, and other livestock to see and be seen. School groups, churches, civic organizations, and other entities proudly display science projects, crafts, art, plants, home grown vegetables, canned foods, cakes, pies etc. etc. in a stunning variety of exhibits. FAIR From Page 1 the entire region. Attendance last year was over 100,000 folks with just as many if not more expected this year depending on the weather. It’s the largest county fair in North Carolina. The idea of a fair to celebrate Cleveland County’s rich agricultural tradition and to give people a chance to mingle and kick up their heels was hatched in 1923. That’s when the Shelby Kiwanis Club developed a plan to create a county-wide fair combining the Boiling Springs, Fallston, and Union community fairs into one event. Through the sales of $20 shares of stock, $15,000 was raised to establish the Cleveland County Agricultural Fair. Tidbits First aid stations, ambulance services and restrooms are conveniently located on the fairgrounds. All guests and containers entering are subject to a protective screening and/or search for prohibited items, including alcoholic beverages, narcotics or other illegal items. Pets and Emotional Support Animals are not allowed. Service Animals must remain on a leash or in a harness and under the control of the owner at all times. Smoking and vaping are not permitted in any buildings, kids’ zone, food areas, grandstands, livestock barns and surrounding areas. Free parking is available in parking lots owned/oper-

Demodectic mange is hereditary, not contagious, but because they had been surviving outdoors with their feral parents, they had also developed secondary skin infections. Today, Truffles has made a complete recovery and is a healthy girl. She is currently in a foster home, where she’s slowly learning that people can be kind and trustworthy. Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ By Gary Miller As deer season begins, my mind goes back to my earlier and less mature years of hunting. Those were the days when I spent more time complaining on the stand instead of being thankful for the opportunity I had to be there. I complained about not seeing deer, about only seeing little ones, and about all my friends having better success than me. And who was I complaining to? Well, God of GARY MILLER course. I mean no one else was around and after all He could change my lot if He wanted to. So it was His fault. I mean it shouldn’t have made any difference that I smelled like Right Guard and was hunting with my back to the wind. And it shouldn’t have made any difference that the sound of my Little Debbie cakes opening crackled like a broken microphone. And it shouldn’t have made any difference that I was in a location that had only limited deer. No, God should have eliminated all of that and given me my miracle 200-inch deer within the first hour of the hunt. He didn’t. So, I complained. The truth is, complaining is natural for all of us. If you think about it, most of our mundane, “Good-morning- how-are-youdoing?” conversations lead with a complaint. “Sure is hot.” “Sure is cold.” “We sure need a little rain.” “Sure wish that rain would stop.” “Work is killing me.” “I’m just too busy.” It’s true that our natural inclination is to complain. Thankfully, complaining is not always bad. It probably helped our ancestors survive when they realized something was not right. And that’s another thing complaining does. It makes us recognize how things could or should be. There is somewhat a moral compass and a call to action when we complain about the way something is. It’s here that we recognize what is right and correct, and then hopefully create a better way. Again, if you think about it, very little gets improved until somebody first notices what’s wrong. But there is another side to complaints. Constant complaints without offering a solution can eventually turn you into a complainer. And constant complaints to and about God can reveal something even deeper. A lack of trust. Does God want us to complain? I don’t think He does, but I think He knows we will. Nearly every servant of God in the Bible complained at some point, and God allowed them to voice it. But there were also times when the complaint began turning into something more. It began turning into distrust. And when that happened, God sometimes simply said, “That’s enough.” So, do you complain about things? I’m sure you do. We all do. But have your complaints turned you into a complainer. If so, don’t be surprised if you hear a familiar voice from your Heavenly Father saying, “That’s enough!” He’s just making sure your disappointment doesn’t become distrust. Breast cancer affects millions of individuals each year. The World Cancer Research Fund International reports that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women across the globe, affecting roughly 2.3 million women each year. Despite the global prevalence of breast cancer, various organizations report high five-year survival rates, particularly among women whose cancers are detected in the earliest stages of the disease. In fact, a 2023 study published in the journal BMJ found that the risk for dying from breast cancer in the five years after an early-stage diagnosis fell to 5 percent in recent years, a notable improvement from the 14 percent risk of death that was reported in the 1990s.
