Clifford’s Army Rescue Extravaganza is excited to invite the community to their Red, White, & Woof event on Saturday, May 23rd at the future CARE rescue facility in Shelby! This fun, familyfriendly afternoon will feature live music, food trucks, local vendors, giveaways, facility tours, and — of course — adoptable dogs looking for loving homes.
Everyone is encouraged to bring a lawn chair and spend the afternoon enjoying great food, music, and community support for rescue dogs in need. Wellbehaved, leashed four-footed guests are welcome to attend too!
The event will kick off with live music from Brent & Scott from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Brent & Scott perform a great mix of classic rock and country favorites that are sure to keep everyone entertained. And even after the music ends, don’t pack up your chairs too quickly — the CARE volunteers have several fun surprises planned that will encourage crowd participation throughout the afternoon!
Three food trucks are scheduled to attend the event, including Viva La Empanada Shelby, TJ’s Hammsburgers, and The Frozen Peel. Be sure to come hungry as options will range from smash burgers and empanadas to frozen bananas, homemade popsicles, dirty sodas, and freshsqueezed lemonade.
In addition to food and entertainment, Red, White, and Woof will feature a vendor row filled with local businesses, fun giveaways throughout the day, and tours of their future rescue facility.
Most importantly, the event will give visitors the opportunity to meet some of the CARE adoptable dogs. Clifford’s Army Rescue currently has approximately 130 dogs searching for forever homes, and expect 20–30 of those dogs to attend. The dogs have heard rumors that there
may be doggie wading pools available so the pups can cool off and splash around during the day!
Red, White, & Woof will take place at the former E.O. Movie Studio property located at One Motion Picture Blvd., Shelby, NC 28152, off Old Boiling Springs Road (near Crest High School). This incredible 26-acre property will become the future home of Clifford’s Army Rescue Extravaganza and will allow them to expand the CARE mission in ways they have only dreamed about. Plans for the facility include extra-large kennels, outdoor play areas, an indoor play space, grooming and training areas, and affordable office space for local nonprofit organizations
While Clifford’s Army Rescue does not allow same-day adoptions, Red, White, & Woof offers approved adopters a great opportunity to meet a lot of dogs to see which four footed friend fits best for their home! Home visits and veterinary references are required before adoptions can be finalized to ensure every dog goes to the very best home possible.

Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the start of the busy boating and summer travel season. The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is encouraging safe boating practices and reminding the public of the dangers of operating a water vessel while impaired.
On the Road, On the Water, Don’t Drink and Drive is a public safety campaign aimed at reducing alcohol and drugrelated incidents on the roadways and waterways.
“While the overall number of boating incidents investigated has been declining in recent years, last year we saw a troubling rise in fatal boating incidents,” said Lt. Anna Barbosa. “So far this year, fatalities have currently
surpassed last year’s numbers. Our goal is for everyone to enjoy their day on the water and return home safely. To do so, avoid alcohol while boating—or if you
choose to drink, designate a sober operator. And remember, life jackets save lives—don’t just have enough on board. Make sure everyone wears one.”
So far, in 2026, there have been 26 boating incidents investigated. Five have been fatal,

Remembering Grace
(2nd Part of “Living in Grace” Series)
Memorial Day is often marked by cookouts, family gatherings, and the unofficial beginning of summer, but beneath the celebrations lies something much deeper: remembrance. It is a day set aside to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to others. Their sacrifice reminds us that freedom is costly and that love is often demonstrated through selflessness. As believers, Memorial Day can also point us toward an even greater sacrifice: the death of Jesus Christ. While human sacrifices may protect a nation or impact a generation, Christ’s sacrifice changed eternity. His death on the cross was the ultimate expression of grace.
Romans 4:25 (NLT) reminds us, “He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.”
Grace was Sacrificial Jesus willingly laid down his life, not because humanity earned it, but because grace made a way where sin had created separation. It is a gift purchased through sacrifice. Christ endured rejection, suffering, and death so that we
could experience life, and we were offered forgiveness, redemption, and eternal hope. In addition, Jesus did not wait for humanity to become perfect before extending grace. He met us in our brokenness and offered salvation freely. Romans 5:8 (AMP) says, “But God clearly shows and proves his own love for us, by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Remember Others
Remembering grace also challenges us to reflect on the sacrifices made by others around us. Every day, there are people who quietly lay down their comfort, time, dreams, and energy for the well-being of someone else. Parents sacrifice for their children. Teachers pour into students. First responders risk their safety for strangers. Military families endure long separations and painful losses. Many acts of sacrifice happen without applause or recognition. In a world that often promotes selfcenteredness, sacrifice reminds us of the power of love. True love gives. True love serves. True love remembers others before itself. As we pause this Memorial Day, and remember the sacrifice of others, may we challenge ourselves to live with purpose, humility and compassion. More importantly, may we never forget the sacrifice of Christ, whose grace continues
to sustain us daily.
Let’s Pray:
“Father, today I take time to remember your love, your goodness, and your faithfulness. You have done great things for me and I am grateful. Today, I remember what my Lord and Savior did for me. My heart is overwhelmed with gratitude. Help me to lay down my life for others and live a life that honors your sacrifice. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.”
CONNECTING TO GOD:
If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin. Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer.

It was the last few days of the season, and this gobbler had outwitted me for days. He roosted in the same place nearly every night. Almost every morning he would let me know he was there. And in turn I would let him know I was there too, even though I would hide my true identity with a soft cluck, purr, or yelp. Because he was older, he never got out of character. After all, it was the hen’s obligation to come to where he was. Therefore, he never moved from his area. He would gobble on the roost, fly down, then gobble and strut until the hen joined him. This particular morning, I decided to push the envelope and get as close as possible, knowing that I might get too close and be seen either by him or a hen. I was hoping the new spring foliage would block my movement. It did. And there I sat, as close as I had ever set up to him before. He gobbled. I purred. Then another hen decided that she was not going to let me have any chance at her man. So, for the next several minutes, she made every sound a turkey can make. And every time she did, my tom would respond. I tried to compete, but I knew she would eventually fly down and go straight to him. Sure enough, down she came only about 50 yards in front of me and went directly to where he was waiting. My plan was thwarted again.
As I sat there, analyzing what just happened, I remembered that I knew where they were going. I knew where he was leading her. I switched to plan B. I knew the small farm road behind me would lead around a steep corner to where they would be. And sure enough, as I made the turn, I could see them just over a small rise. As the hen made her way up the hill to my right, the tom began to follow in full strut and pursuit. I raised my gun and dropped him about 40 yards away. Those are actually the kinds of hunts that are not only the most enjoyable, but also the most memorable.
When I think about it, most of my plans are of the B sort. Rarely do things happen as I originally plan. Rarely do situations and circumstances go as I predict. And people’s responses are not always what I expect. The truth is, life rarely follows plan A. Solomon put it this way. “A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” (Prov 16:9) What he is saying is this. It is good to make plans, but success is not in the plans. It’s in the direction that comes from God, which might come from plan B. And plan B with God will always be the most memorable – and the most successful.

unofficial designation as the start of summer makes Memorial Day weekend a time of celebration for many people, the families of fallen and active service members often find Memorial Day weekend has its fair share of heartache as well. Families of fallen service members who lost their lives defending their country tend to find solace in ceremonies honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. But there are other ways civilian men and women can honor both active and fallen service members in their communities.
• Participate in community events that honor fallen service members. Many communities host Memorial Day parades to honor fallen soldiers. It can be comforting to the families of fallen soldiers to see fellow members of their community attend the parade and public memorials. Such civilian support lets family members of fallen soldiers know that fellow members of their community appreciate and do not forget the sacrifices made by their loved ones.
• Include families of fallen and active service members in your
weekend activities. Memorial Day weekend is a three-day weekend at the end of May, when the weather is warming up in much of the country. The weekend marks the return of backyard barbecues or pool parties, and such events are a great opportunity for civilians to invite the families of fallen service members over to share some fun in the sun. Memorial Day can be an especially difficult time for the loved ones of fallen service members, and even the few hours of relief that a barbecue, pool party or picnic can provide can make a welcome respite from an otherwise difficult weekend.
• Make a charitable donation. Numerous charities exist to support soldiers and their families. Such charities exist to support the families of fallen soldiers, injured soldiers or even those families struggling while a family member is on active deployment. Men and women who want to help can do so by making a charitable donation. And such donations do not have to be financial. The Hero MilesSM program, for example, allows men and women to donate their frequent flyer miles to wounded, injured or ill service members or their families. This allows service members who meet certain criteria to be given a round-trip airline ticket from a medical center
to their home or to attend an authorized event. In addition, service members can give a round-trip ticket to enable family members or close friends to visit them while they are receiving medical treatment. Since its inception, the program, which is administered by the nonprofit Fisher House Foundation, has provided more than 36,000 airline tickets worth more than $55 million. To learn more, visit www.fisherhouse.org. Numerous other charities exist to help service members and their families in a variety of ways.
• Organize events in your community. Every community benefits from the efforts of active service members and the efforts of those service members who gave their lives in service of their country. Men and women who want to express their gratitude for such service can organize events to do just that. Speak to local merchants and encourage them to offer discounts to military members and their families throughout Memorial Day weekend. Or organize an ice cream social for the children of active or fallen service members. Such events can be uplifting for the families of service members while raising community awareness of the important role our soldiers play.

Sally Howe, age 79, of Bostic, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2026. Sally was born Saturday, October 26, 1946 in Concord, New Hampshire to the late Russell Rheaume and Mary Hayes Rheaume. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Merchant and brother, Steve Rheaume. She is survived by her husband, Albert Howe, Jr.; daughters, Sharon Marie Howe of Hickory, Tuesday Lynn Perkins of Bessemer City, NC and Mandi Howe of Bostic; son, Scott Richard Hurd (Christina) of Washington, NH; brothers, Russell Rheaume of Chimney Rock, Gary Rheaume of Hopkinton, NH and a sister, Cindy Colby of New Hampshire.

TULA W. GREENE
Tula W. Greene, age 88, of Mooresboro passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Tula was born Saturday, October 16, 1937, in Rutherford County to the late Roy Wilkie and Amy Whisnant Wilkie.
In addition to her parents Tula was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny R. Greene; daughter, Christy Greene; a grandson; and three brothers, Paul Wilkie, Lloyd Wilkie, and Roy Wilkie Jr.
She is survived by a son Roger Greene (Kim) of Cliffside; a sister, Rosa Lee Cobb of Gaffney SC; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Monday, May 11, 2026, at Harrelson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Shane Belue and Reverend Tim Wilkie officiating. Interment followed in the Cliffside Cemetery.

1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar
6 tablespoons butter, melted
FILLING:
1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
1 carton (8 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed (3 cups)
1 can (21 ounces) cherry pie filling
1. In a bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, confectioners’ sugar and butter. Press onto the bottom of a greased 8-in. square pan.
2. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and confectioners’ sugar until smooth; fold in whipped topping. Spread over crust. Spoon pie filling over top. Refrigerate until set, about 1 hour.
