or refrigeration access. Basics Food Pantry also provides hygiene items, warm clothing, heaters, tents, sleeping bags, etc. upon request and when in stock. The food pantry reports that their clients’ greatest need right now is access to fresh food that includes vegetables, fruits, dairy, and meats/eggs. Fresh food improves health outcomes, and those facing food insecurity are often healthcare insecure, too. They have been incorporating purchases of these items into their weekly food procurement. With rising grocery prices, Basics Food Pantry could use your donations, whether it is items or cash. Basics Food Pantry describes themselves as a very open and transparent group of committed Christians who are looking for volunteers that want to serve in a practical way. You can support Basics by making a cash, food or hygiene donation, donating an item for their thrift store, or becoming a volunteer. To learn more about Basics Food Pantry, visit www.basicscm.org or call 828-289-7996. They are located at 141 Main Street in Mooresboro and are open Thursdays from 9am-1pm.
Moved by reports of a malnourished child collapsing on stage at a local elementary school, Barry Yelton and a group of concerned residents founded Basics Food Pantry in Cliffside in 2015 to address an unknown crisis that was coming to light. After a couple of years in Cliffside, the food pantry finally found its current home in neighboring Henrietta. Once operations were established at the new location, it became apparent that Henrietta has one of the largest concentrations of economically disadvantaged Barry Yelton and volunteers gather for work. people in Rutherford County, and the food pantry would fill at the right time often seems to be a 10-20 new families inquiring about a dire need. Avoiding a Costly Lockout: 4 Reasons to Duplicate Your Car Key (Feature Impact) Losing your keys may be frustrating, but realizing you’re locked out of your car - without a spare key - can be truly panicinducing. The price of getting back on the road can depend on several factors, including your vehicle make and model, the type of key that needs replacing and whether the situation calls for emergency roadside assistance. Avoiding a potentially pricey and stressful lockout, which occurs for nearly 4 million Americans each year, starts by planning ahead. According to KeyMe Locksmiths, a service that makes it easy to duplicate car keys at up to 70% off dealership prices, creating a spare before the original is lost, addressing worn keys before they break and keeping backups in secure locations can reduce the need for emergency locksmith services. “A good rule of thumb is to have at least two working keys for your vehicle,” said Samantha Jahnke, chief experience officer for KeyMe Locksmiths. “If you’re down to one, make a spare while you still have a working key. It can save you stress and expense if you’re ever locked out.” Consider these four common reasons drivers make duplicate keys, and how planning ahead can help prevent a lockout from becoming a costly problem. Have a Backup for Lost or Damaged Keys One car key isn’t enough, because all it takes is one accident or memory lapse to disrupt your day. Maybe you already had a spare key,
but it’s been a while since you’ve seen it. Or perhaps you have a habit of locking your key inside your vehicle, so you’d feel better with an extra. Having a spare - or a spare for the spare - gives you peace of mind you have another way to get back on the road without additional hassle. Give Another Driver Convenient Access If you share a vehicle with another member of your household, it makes life more convenient for each driver to have their own keys. Instead of passing the primary set back and forth, or arguing over who saw them last, both of you will have reliable access to the car when you need it. Plus, a spare set of keys makes a nice surprise when it’s time to give a new driver in the house access to the car. Keep a Spare Set for Travel When you’re far from home, it can be especially risky to only have one set of keys with you. If they happen to fall out of your pocket or get misplaced at the hotel, you could wind up stranded
hundreds of miles away, facing the stress of finding a replacement service in an unfamiliar area. Bring a spare to keep in a secure location, like a purse or backpack that always stays on you, so you can focus on enjoying your vacation. If you realize before a trip you don’t have a spare, plan ahead and get a duplicate made before you hit the road. Make an Extra for a Used
Vehicle Sometimes buying a used vehicle means the previous owner has already done the work of losing the spare key. If your car only comes with one key, make a backup as soon as possible. Having two working keys can also pay off when it’s time to sell or trade in your vehicle, as a missing spare may reduce its value or give a buyer another reason to negotiate.

Historic Downtown Marion, NC Brought to you by:
The City of Marion Officials from the towns of Rutherfordton and Spindale met at Spindale Town Hall October 5 to complete the transfer of the 2012 HME 78-foot ladder truck to the Spindale Fire Department. Spindale Mayor Nancy Walker thanked the Town of Rutherfordton for the transfer of the truck. She stressed the important role ladder
trucks played in fighting the fire at the former Farmers Hardware building in Downtown Forest City recently. Rutherfordton Mayor Jimmy Dancy spoke of the great relationship between the two towns. He said the towns working together can accomplish a lot that benefits all citizens. Doug Barrick, Rutherfordton Town
Manager, said he was excited about the future of the two towns. The cooperation makes the communities safer and better places to live, work and play. It will take a couple of months for Spindale firefighters to fully equip the truck and put it in service according to Spindale Fire Chief Jamie Guillermo.

The N.C. Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund has awarded $51.2 million in grants to help protect working farms and forests and support North Carolina’s agricultural economy. Grants were awarded to farms and projects in Alamance, Anson, Avery, Bladen, Brunswick, Cabarrus, Camden, Chatham, Cherokee, Clay, Cleveland, Columbus, Craven, Cumberland, Currituck, Davie, Duplin, Franklin, Guilford, Harnett, Haywood, Iredell, Johnston, Lee, Lincoln, Macon, Madison, Martin, Mitchell, Onslow, Orange, Person, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Rutherford, Surry, Transylvania, Tyrrell, Union, Wake, Watauga, Wayne and Wilkes counties. “I want to sincerely thank the General Assembly for its historic investment in farmland preservation and for recognizing the importance of protecting the land that sustains us,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “This support will make a significant, lasting difference for farm families and rural communities
across North Carolina. We are grateful for the opportunity to help more landowners protect their farms and preserve the resources future generations will need to produce food and fiber.” The General Assembly’s 202627 budget included $46.9 million in nonrecurring funding and an additional $2 million in recurring funding for the Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund, the largest single-year investment in the program’s history. Agricultural conservation easements provide a voluntary way for landowners to protect their working lands. Preserving these farms and forests helps maintain the land base needed for agricultural production and supports the rural communities and businesses that depend on it. “I also appreciate the farmers, landowners, county governments, soil and water conservation districts, and land trusts that supported this cause during our Farmland Preservation Advocacy Day in May,” said Troxler. “Without the farmer
and local support, there is no farmland preservation.” While the awards represent a significant investment in farmland preservation, applicants for the current grant cycle should not assume the same level of funding will be available. Funding levels can vary, and awards will depend on the resources available for that cycle. The ADFP Trust Fund provides grants to county governments and nonprofit organizations for agricultural conservation easements, agricultural development projects, agricultural plans and Agricultural Growth Zones. Farmers, landowners, and others interested in applying must partner with a qualified nonprofit conservation organization or county government to participate in an ADFP Trust Fund grant proposal. For the complete list of grant awards, visit the NCDA&CS Farmland Preservation Division website at https://www.ncagr.gov/divisions/ farmland-preservation/history/ cycle-19. NCDMV using Digital Vehicle Registration The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles wants to remind customers that as of October 1, NCDMV will no longer issue license plate stickers or automatically provide printed registration cards. The change, directed by the N.C. General Assembly, moves the state to a digital vehicle registration system. Though the end product customers receive is changing, the core registration process for North Carolina vehicle owners remains the same. Customers will still: • Receive a renewal notice in the mail 90 days before their registration expires • Need to complete necessary inspections • Need to pay registration fees and vehicle property taxes on time to keep their registration valid • Be able to complete those payments in the same four ways: by mail, in person at a license plate agency (LPA), online, or at a self-service kiosk. “What is changing is the end product customers receive,” said NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine. “The vast majority of the registration process stays exactly the same. You will still get your renewal notice, still need your inspection, still pay your fees and taxes on time, and still have the same convenient options to take care of business. Only the physical sticker and printed registration card are going away.” At the end of each registration or renewal transaction, customers will receive a receipt that includes most of the information previously found on the printed registration card. The receipt will
Take a look at the artwork beside this story. While our country’s poverty rate is 20% or one in five, our school kids fall into an even more staggering number of 37% or nearly two in five. by Pat Jobe Maybe you aren’t moved by that statistic or knowing that nearly two out of five children you see in a store come from poor families. That’s sad, but I understand. Many people are not as empathetic as others and don’t care the way some of our most caring people do. But if you are among the caring ones, here is a place to care. Please reach deep and call Jody Key and let her know how you can help. There’s an old saying among church folks that anybody who has two coats can spare one for somebody who has none. I remember when Earl King bought a coat for a little girl at Tanner’s Grove. I can still see that little girl hugging Earl. The movement of the Holy Spirit may look a little more dramatic to some folks, but when a little girl is cold, there’s not a much more dramatic demonstration of warmth than that one. Call Jody and let her know that you’re ready to step up with coats for kids.

show fees paid, the vehicle identification number (VIN), plate number, and a barcode that inspection stations can scan the following year. It will also include a link allowing customers to download a digital copy of their registration card to save on a phone or print themselves. Customers who prefer a printed copy of the digital registration card may obtain one instantly at any license plate agency or order one online to be mailed for a $5 fee. Printed registration cards are no longer required by law. Law enforcement officers already use electronic verification systems to confirm a vehicle’s registration status in real time, making physical cards and stickers unnecessary for enforcement purposes. Vehicle registration remains valid as long as fees and property taxes are paid on time. For full details, frequently asked questions, and options to access or print registration information, visit ncdmv.gov/registration. International Registration Plan (IRP) Commercial Trucking Customers: For International Registration Plan (IRP) commercial trucking customers, the process is also moving to digital delivery of the cab card. When a transaction is completed online or in person, the customer’s email address will be collected. The customer will then receive an email receipt containing a link to download a PDF of the cab card. The cab card can then be printed or forwarded electronically to the vehicle’s driver. Work to bring economic growth and help local businesses. Work to decrease regulations. Work to decrease drug and homeless issues. Carl is passionate about his home town and the people who live in Forest City. When local taxes nearly doubled, Carl noticed an increased turnover of businesses resulting in many empty buildings. He also saw the growing need for a rehab facility to address the rising drug and homelessness issues. Realizing the urgency of the situation, Carl decided it was time to be part of the solution and bring forward his ideas. He is determined to work to create a better, more affordable life for the residents of his home town, Forest City, NC. Paid for by Ramsey for Town Commissioner

Wildlife Agency Cautions Bear Appetites Are at Seasonal High
The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) advises residents to take preventative steps to secure attractants as black bears’ eating behavior intensifies in the late summer and fall due to hyperphagia. Hyperphagia is a critical biological phase when bears significantly increase their food consumption to prepare for the colder months when natural food becomes scarce. During this time, bears will actively search for any source of food, whether natural or human-provided, which makes securing attractants especially important. “During the hyperphagia phase, black bears increase their daily calories from 2,000 to 3,500 calories in spring and summer to approximately 15,000 to 20,000 calories a day.” said Black Bear Biologist Jenna Malzahn. “To put this into perspective, 20,000 calories is equivalent to 9 pounds of acorns, 70 pounds of wild cherries, or just one typical birdfeeder that can hold 7-pounds of black oil sunflower seeds.”
To satisfy this increase in appetite, bears will consume a variety of hard and soft mast species, from acorns and hickory nuts to pokeberry, cherry, grape and black gum. However, they’ll also take advantage of human-provided food sources like bird feeders, outdoor pet food and unsecured garbage and compost, as well as agricultural crops, such as soybeans and standing corn. With this level of food consumption, bears can put on 3 pounds per day and gain anywhere from 20% to 100% of their summer weight! During hyperphagia, black bears travel extensively to search for food for up to 20 hours per day. This increased movement and activity significantly raises the chances of close proximity between humans and bears. When bears repeatedly access humanprovided food sources, the likelihood of close encounters increases and the chances grow that a bear will return to areas offering easy meals, such as unsecured garage, bird seed, and pet food. NCWRC experiences an increase in reports of bears in public and residential areas, in the woods and on

I can remember the first time I decided to learn to hunt with a bow. I was about 30 years old. Yeah, I know this seems old to some of you but at that time I did more fishing than hunting. I can also remember my friend Tim easing my mind concerning my ability to use one. He was one of the owners of the store I frequented. To me, the complexity of this weapon seemed overwhelming. His calm admonition to me was that once he tuned my bow and adjusted the sights, the principle would be the same as my gun. Put the sight on the target, hold steady, and slowly squeeze the trigger. Of course, he was right and the more I practiced the more I became comfortable with the whole process. Since that day, I have hunted with archery equipment more than any other way. And it all started with one thing: encouragement. It is perhaps the most powerful tool in existence. It has been the single greatest catalyst for more inventions, discoveries, and accomplishments, than any other motivation. Much of the time it is the difference between success and failure and always between fatigue and perseverance. Encouragement is the offense on any team. It does not allow one to stand still but is ever motioning to gain ground. I remember the time
my granddaughter came in from soccer practice. The only thing she mentioned was how the coach bragged on her. What do you think that caused her to do? Gain ground. Encouragement is the gift that keeps on giving. Are you an encourager? There is absolutely nothing you will ever do that will move your interests forward more than encouraging those who work with you or for you. And while encouragement may even take monetary sacrifice, it will always return in multiplied and varied profits. Is it any wonder the number one reason God wanted his people to come together each week was to be encouraged and to encourage others? It shames me how we have twisted this original idea into a knock-off from the Old Testament law. We have placed everything else above this main purpose. Instead of worship, praise, giving, and preaching becoming the means for encouragement when we gather, we have made each of these an end in themselves. And many times we even do it at the expense of encouragement. There is one thing for sure, when encouragement becomes absent so will the people who need it. Everything else they will be able to do at home. If you want your faith family to gain ground, encouragement will do the trick. You can do it!
roadways during this period. The agency suggests methods to avoid bear encounters to help keep both humans and bears safer: • Review the BearWise Basics for Home and Outdoors. • Make sure anything that might attract a bear is safely out of sight, smell and reach. • Be extra alert when driving or walking at night. • Check the yard before letting out your pets. • Know what to do if you encounter a bear. • Share what you know with neighbors and others in your community. It’s raining seeds! In partnership with the National Forest Foundation, a contract has been awarded to begin spreading more than 20,000 pounds of seeds across 900 acres of landslides and areas along streams and rivers in the Grandfather and the Appalachian Ranger Districts of the Pisgah National Forest. Seeding operations will use both helicopters and ground based methods and are expected to take place throughout October and November. Hurricane Helene left many of these areas with bare rock and exposed soil, making them vulnerable to erosion and the spread of
invasive plants. To help restore these areas, two ecologically appropriate seed mixes were developed- one for landslides and the other for riparian areas. The seed mixes are made up of different native herbs, shrubs and trees, along with annual, fast growing cover crops. The cover crops will help stabilize the soil in the short term, while native vegetation becomes established to minimize erosion and the introduction of invasive plant species over the long term. Just one more seed in the right direction. Article Provided By: US Forest Service - National Forests in NC

Roots Music Revue continues October 29 The Earl Scruggs Center welcomed a live audience on Thursday, September 24, for the inaugural recording of Roots Music Revue, a new live radio program celebrating the music, history and stories of the Southern Appalachian region. Presented in partnership by American Songcatcher, the Earl Scruggs Center and WNCW 88.7, the program blended thoughtful conversation, personal stories, history and incredible musical performances in the spirit of the great live radio shows of the past. The first program in the three-part inaugural Roots Music Revue series featured acclaimed singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Leah Song, best known as one half of the internationally celebrated duo Rising Appalachia. Song joined host and producer Nicholas Edward Williams for a wide-ranging conversation about Appalachian musical traditions, their connections to the Celtic Isles, and the musical influences and experiences that shaped her own artistic journey. “Our first radio show proved that this is not just a concert, but an earnest invitation to understand your own heritage through the music and stories that have shaped these mountains,” Williams said. “It is a way of learning that pulls you in
from the heart while you tap your foot, pat your leg, or bob your head, leaving you with something truly meaningful to bring to the table the next time someone mentions Appalachian music.” The Roots Music Revue program featuring Leah Song aired in national syndication on WNCW 88.7 October 3. Listeners can stream the program at WNCW.org or tune in to 88.7 FM.
the Great Hall at the Earl Scruggs Center,” said Mary Beth Martin, Executive Director of the Earl Scruggs Center. “Earl Scruggs grew up surrounded by these traditions, and he carried the music he learned here to audiences around the world.
Roots Music Revue gives us an opportunity to explore those traditions in a way that feels both deeply rooted in history and completely alive in the present.” Located in historic Uptown Shelby, the Earl Scruggs Center provides a fitting
setting for Roots Music Revue. The collaboration with American Songcatcher brings together two organizations rooted in the preservation and celebration of American roots music. Through Roots Music Revue, the partners explore the music and traditions that
have shaped the American South, connecting its rich musical past with the artists and traditions carrying it forward today. Tickets and additional information are available at www.earlscruggscenter.org. Article By: Earl Scruggs Music Center

I volunteer at the Washburn Outreach Center in Bostic every Thursday and Friday and on my way, I’ll stop by the Drop-in at Bostic on Thursday and pick up 4 or 5 papers for other volunteers. They are gone in a flash. People enjoy this paper. One volunteer notoriously will ask me immediately on Thursday if the puzzle, Sudoku, is included. Most of the time it is, if there is enough space. Sudoku is a logic puzzle with numbers, but no math. What’s your favorite puzzle? Others can’t wait to catch the front page story and pages of local news. Rutherford Weekly, originally called The Amazin’ Shopper, was spearheaded by then owner, the late Tommy Hicks, and was later sold to parent company Community First Media. It includes a list of community and church events, photos of things going on in Rutherford County, the stories and photos of people and what they’re doing. The front page features a person, community, an event and other subjects of interest. My newspaper career began in 1970 as a senior at East Rutherford High School. My goal, maybe since the 4th grade, was to be a reporter. I never thought of anything else. So in April 1970, a
National Newspaper Week observance with a theme, “Rooted in Community, Committed to Truth.” The purpose of the week is to honor the print and digital newspaper industry and to recognize the hard work of reporters and staff, and highlight how local journalist holds governments accountable and informs the public. During the years I was privileged to work for Charles, Ron and Bill, I don’t recall ever working any harder and yet, I had the time of my life. I never felt I actually went to work while at The Daily Courier — it was more of a vacation, regardless of the number of hours spent there in a day. I had the honor to write stories about the best and most interesting people
anywhere and had the responsibility to write stories that were often quite difficult and heartbreaking. We were committed to share truths and facts and in doing so, tried to educate and encourage our readers. So today whether you’re reading Rutherford Weekly “digitally” or holding it in your hand, remember to thank those responsible for keeping the public informed through the newspaper. How grateful for freedom of the press in the United States — protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution. Enjoy this week’s Rutherford Weekly and those to come. Send us your story ideas. month before graduation, I got a job at the Rutherford County News as the typesetter and during the next 24 years I’d climb the ladder to reporter, features reporter and to editor of that small town weekly. The first two years there, I worked full-time and attended Isothermal Community College. I didn’t further my college education, but learned on the job through folks like Charles Tomblin and Marny Hendrick. Oh, the stories I was privileged to share with our readers. To this day when I pass by the home of someone I interviewed or see a place where some news event occurred, I remember practically everything about that interview. In 1994, Ron Paris and Bill Blair, arrived at the Rutherford County News to tell me they were buying the paper. With tears running down my face of the demise of the “old” weekly, I was on the other hand thrilled to be offered a reporter’s job at the Courier — a dream come true. Until 2018, I wrote stories, columns and shot pictures of the goings and comings of people in Rutherford County. I met lifelong friends at the newspaper office and in the community. What a privilege to have worked for the best small daily paper in the state. What an honor to collect several North Carolina Press Association awards while at The Daily Courier — for features, breaking news stories, columns and a photography award, which was a complete surprise. It was not unusual for other reporters and the paper itself, to receive literally dozens of awards nearly every year for being among the best across the state. For as long as I can remember I have always loved newspapers. I admit, I don’t hold a newspaper in my hand as much as I once did - unfortunately - thanks to the age of technology. To this day, however, when possible and especially on vacation, I’ll buy a newspaper every day just to hold and read, wherever I might be. While visiting a good friend Sunday afternoon at a rehab center in Hendersonville, his wife took Steve the Asheville Sunday paper. He was and still is a person who holds the newspaper. Years ago, I’d often drive up to Chimney Rock on Sundays with a Charlotte Observer in tow for him, since there were no Charlotte Observer racks in the Gorge. Remember that thick Sunday paper? This is the 86th annual

Points To Ponder When God Says No

decision. Although God may not answer our prayers in the way we desire, He has promised to give us sufficient grace to withstand our trials (II Corinthians 12:9). In our weakness, He lovingly gives us His strength. There is no better testimony than a Christian who endures hardship with the peace and joy of God. In His eternal wisdom, our God will sometimes withhold the answer we desire for a greater purpose. Have you ever considered that the reason He said “No” is because He has a better plan? All things do work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). When God says “No,” it does not mean that He has stopped loving us or listening to us. Sometimes His “No” is simply His way of leading us toward something that only He can see.

One of the greatest privileges of being a child of God is being able to bring every need to Him in prayer. We are encouraged to bring our petitions to the Lord each day (Philippians 4:6). What a blessing it when we pray -FUNERAL DIRECTOR- is for something and He answers us according to our desires. But what happens when our prayers seem to go unanswered? If we are not careful, this can cause us to question our faith and even tempt us to turn away from Him. There should be no doubt that our Heavenly Father hears the prayers of those who are His and desires to meet their needs. However, we must understand that He possesses knowledge and wisdom that we could never fully comprehend. Isaiah writes in chapter fifty-five that God’s ways are not our ways and that His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. Therefore, there are times when we must exercise faith and simply let God be God. His sovereign plan is always best, even though we may not fully understand the what or the why of His

Insights & Analytics. 74% of people will participate in Halloween-related activities this year. Those numbers can seem daunting for a single day, especially when watching the family budget. However, there are ways to keep the fun, stylish, and on budget. The Better Business Bureau recommends the following tips this Halloween: Look around your home Check your closet. There are probably hidden surprises to help you throw together a killer costume! Getting creative will not only help save money but also space. Rent a costume If the idea of spending money on buying a costume isn’t quite appealing because you will only wear it once, consider renting. Renting a costume leaves room in the budget. Research rental companies on BBB.org, check the store policy regarding trying on costumes, inspect the
condition of the outfit, and read the rental agreement carefully before signing anything. Buy in bulk It may seem counterintuitive, but buying more can save you money! Buying in bulk lessens the cost per item. Budgeting can be especially handy on a night like Halloween, considering there might be more trick-or-treaters this year. Factory-wrapped candy will last a long time, even if you have leftovers. And let’s be honest, leftovers are pretty tasty, even after Halloween. Always check the return policy Seasonal shops carry unique items for a short period in a temporary location or online. When shopping for a seasonal vendor, understand the store’s return policy before purchasing. Remember: Buying a bunch of stuff with the intent of simply returning it after October 31 is considered fraud. Shop smart online When shopping from
Rutherford Weekly - Page 21
an online website, the first step is ensuring the URL starts with “HTTPS” and includes a lock symbol. The S in “HTTPS” stands for secure. Look up the website’s privacy policy and contact information. If it is not clearly listed, or they only have an email as the point of contact, take that as a big red flag and shop elsewhere. Also, be sure to use your credit card instead of your debit card, as credit cards not only provide additional protection but also easier to dispute a fraudulent charge. Seasonal stores If you decide to shop from a seasonal store, ask whether or not they will be open after the holiday, how long they plan to stay open, and if they will accept returns after Halloween. If they plan to close up shop on November 1 or refuse returns after, either consider shopping elsewhere or take more time to be sure that item is exactly what you want before making the purchase. More tips for seasonal
“pop-up” stores: • Ask the owner if there is a website in case you must contact them later. • Save every receipt. • Use a credit card to dispute problem charges with the issuer. • Make sure you are clear on what items are FINAL SALE. Attending a special event or visiting a haunted house Before purchasing tickets, research the group offering the experience and make sure that there are no complaints about the company hosting the event. • Check out the company at BBB.org. Read what previous customers say, and see how the business responds to complaints. • Check BBB Scam Tracker and see if other consumers have filed a report about the event host. • Search the business online by adding the words “Complaint,” “Reviews,” or “Scam” after their name for different search results.
