The certification follows a comprehensive review process that evaluates a hospital’s ability to deliver timely, evidence-based care for stroke patients while maintaining rigorous standards for quality and patient safety. “Renewing this certification reflects the dedication of our physicians, nurses, EMS partners, and support teams who work together every day to provide exceptional care for our community,” said Sudandra Ratnasamy, Chief Executive Officer of Rutherford Regional Health System. “When stroke occurs, every minute matters. Chimney Rock Baptist... Baptist...Continued Continued from front page.

Paula Moore (left to right) Delilah Fisher, Marlene and Harold Wilson with Pastor Alex Heafner share stories of the Chimney Rock Baptist Church — the place they all call their home for worship.

Lifelong member Bonnie Elliott, 99, said, “My mama started carrying me to this church when I was a baby.” At the 50th anniversary of the church on Aug. 29, 1976, a photograph of the church family shows at least 100 parishioners gathered on the front steps. From a church directory is this description of the church - “what began as a meeting place in a log home in 1892 and renamed in 1926 has grown to become a ministry

that not only serves the towns of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, but reaches to the far ends of the earth.” Today’s congregation is smaller and although the congregation is “aging”, the spirit of God remains. Take a drive up to the

area of CRBC where at noon each day and at 6pm, hear the carillon toll, reminding church members, families and tourists of the dedication of group of parishioners who gather each Sunday to praise God as they have for 100 years.

DEQ reminds residents, businesses that burning trash is against state law The open burning of trash, metal, plastic and all other manmade materials not only harms the environment and poses a public health risk, it’s against state law. While many chose to burn debris outdoors for disposal in the fall, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality is reminding North Carolinians: If it doesn’t grow, don’t burn it. Open burning is any outdoor fire that releases smoke and pollution directly into the air, including from burn piles and burn barrels. Open burning is only allowed in limited circumstances and only for vegetative materials like leaves, limbs and yard debris. The open burning rule, the state’s oldest air quality regulation, limits what can be burned outdoors and when. Other requirements of the open burning rule: • Residential yard waste and commercial land clearing burning can only occur between 8am and 6pm. No new vegetation can be added to a burn pile after 6pm. • Burning is only allowed when the air quality forecast is Code Green or Code Yellow. Burning on Code Orange, Red or Purple days is prohibited. • Yard waste must originate at a private residence and be burned on that site. In other words, residents can only burn vegetation from their own yard — not yard waste from other homes or locations. • Burning yard waste is only allowed if permitted under local ordinances and only if public pickup of yard debris is not available. • Campfires, outdoor cooking fires and bonfires are permissible, unless prohibited by local ordinances or temporary burn bans, provided that only vegetation such as firewood is burned. Fires must be controlled and never left unattended. • Commercial land clearing operations are also limited by the open burning rule. Land clearing is the uprooting or clearing of vegetation in connection with construction, land development or mining, or the initial clearing of vegetation

to enhance property value. The burning of this debris must comply with all open burning rules, including the following key restrictions: • As a general rule, the vegetation should originate on the site where the burn is taking place. (Land clearing waste can be transported and burned at another site up to four times a year only if specific conditions in the open burning rules are met). • Kerosene or diesel fuel may be used to start a land-clearing fire, but no other man-made materials can be burned. • Land clearing burn piles must be at least 500 feet from occupied structures and at least 250 feet from any public road when the prevailing winds are blowing toward the road. Information on wind direction is available from the National Weather Service. The Division of Air Quality enforces the state open burning rule, partnering with local law enforcement, firefighters, fire marshals and the NC Forest Service to ensure compliance. Violators can be fined up to $25,000 per violation per day. Careless debris burning is the leading cause of wildfires in North Carolina. The NC Forest Service may require an open burning permit before certain fires are ignited, including fires in protected areas. The Division of Air Quality does not issue burn permits. Burn permits are available through the NC Forest Service’s online application at apps.ncagr.gov/burnpermits. Local county and municipal governments may have more stringent burning restrictions than state law. Contact your local officials to learn what burning rules may be in place where you live. The open burning rule includes exceptions for certain special burns, including firefighter training exercises and prescribed burns. A New Star Shines On Hudlow Road

by Pat Jobe A group of 73 very lucky children are gathering next door to the Carolina Foothills Foundation offices on Hudlow Road. They are participants in the brand new Boys and Girls Club Rutherford. Across a full spectrum of race, backgrounds and opportunities, these young folks just got an extra step on the ladders of their futures. Really? Yes, really. In a multi-million dollar facility that is spread across several thousand square feet, they will have a rare and amazing chance to play together. Play? Yep, and learn. The program offers an hour a day of homework and study. Aw, come on. They will have one day a week access to laptop computers and a 3D printer in the lab designated to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math or STEM. The first through fifth grade children are divided into age groups so each has access to the lab which executive director Maggie McMahon says cost

$100,000 and was paid for with a grant from Facebook’s parent company, Meta, and matched by the Carolina Foothills Foundation. Pretty spiffy, huh? You ain’t seen nothing yet. A fully equipped gymnasium that was just finished this year offers gaming opportunities galore. Also dividing the groups by age allows time for different groups in different areas. And there’s an art room. Again, age groups will rotate with each group getting one day a week in the STEM lab and one day a week in the art room. Ambitious? Yes. It has taken four years of planning and qualifying the staff of ten, seven of whom provide direct supervision with the kids. To say it is a shining star of a children’s program may be an understatement. Foundation CEO Rita Burch said, “The only constant is change,” as she recalled that part of the building had once been for the use of hospice volunteers. The new club is clearly a source of joy and accomplishment for her. McMahon said, “Safety is our number one priority. The entire facility is fenced with gates that have alarms if they are broached.” The brochure for the club says “Every child deserves a chance to succeed.” The new club, which opened

Aug. 11, will increase chances, open doors and provide experiences like little else does in Rutherford County. There is currently a waiting list for the program at $35 per week. Scholarships are available. McMahon said the scholarships make sure no child is denied entry due to an inability to pay. The club’s website is bgrcrutherfordnc.org and the phone number is 828202-7171. O.A. Fish, along with his wife Charlotte and the Good Lord, founded South Mountain Christian Camp, another shining star many years ago. O.A. used to say, “I wish every child in Rutherford County was the concern of everybody in Rutherford County.” We’ve got a ways to go yet, but we took a big step on Aug. 11 with the opening of Boys and Girls Club Kids interact on Day 2 of the new Boys and Girls Club Rutherford on Hudlow Road Rutherford. in Forest City. Kids in the first through fifth grades have an amazing array of toys, games, Contact Pat Jobe at books, computers and a lavish new gym and playground where they can play, learn and love life. patjobe13@gmail.com.

Through September 11, VA will mail official “Choose VA” postcards to approximately 3.8 million Veterans who are not enrolled in VA healthcare. If you receive one, don’t throw it away. It’s a legitimate VA communication designed to help Veterans learn about their healthcare eligibility and how to enroll. • Apply online, or go to VA.gov/ health-care/apply/application/

introduction • By phone: Call VA’s Health Enrollment Center at 877-222-8387 • In-person: Find a nearby VA location at VA.gov/find-locations A quick but important reminder about scams You may have seen VA’s recent fraud alert regarding the “Veterans Savings Program” postcard scam, which has appeared in multiple states over the past year. Those postcards were not sent by VA, and Veterans are urged to discard them. When receiving Veteran related messaging, always consider what the message is asking you to do. VA only uses official channels such as www.va.gov or phone numbers that you can easily search online to see if it’s a VA number. If scanning a QR code, look on your camera to see if the address is pointing to a www.va.gov address; some

scams try to make the link appear to be legitimate. These new Choose VA postcards are legitimate VA communications. They come directly from VA as part of an official outreach campaign and shouldn’t be mistaken for past scams we’ve warned about. Ensuring Veterans don’t accidentally throw away these helpful mailers is a key part of the messaging—especially since previous scam alerts led many Veterans to be cautious with unexpected mail. If you ever suspect fraud or are unsure about a communication you’ve received, VA encourages Veterans and survivors to report concerns through VSAFE, an official resource dedicated to helping protect Veterans from scams. You can: visit VSAFE online at https://vsafe.gov or call 833388-7233. Both options connect you to information and reporting tools you can trust. Article Provided By: va.gov

5 Simple Snake Prevention Tips (Feature Impact) Summer is peak snake season, so if you’ve recently gotten jump-scared while gardening or walking up your porch steps, you’re not alone. Typically, snakes aren’t slithering around looking for someone to bite - they’re often searching for food, water and shelter, and the vast majority (97% in the U.S.) aren’t venomous. Even if the risks of any real danger are low, though, you probably have no desire to share your shelter or yard with any slithering housemates. Prevention tips to reduce the possibility of unwanted reptilian encounters on your property: Tidy Up Your Yard If there’s one thing snakes love, it’s overgrown vegetation. Tall grass, piles of leaves and unkempt landscaping offer cool, sheltered hiding places for snakes and other pests. By keeping your lawn mowed, shrubs trimmed and garden weeded, you immediately make your yard less attractive to snakes and other pests. Seal Exterior Cracks and Gaps Seeing a snake outside your home is one thing but inside is a whole new

level of startling. Conduct a thorough inspection of your house’s foundation to look for holes or cracks where uninvited guests may be able to infiltrate. Batten down the hatches by sealing these up and installing sturdy mesh over other openings like vents and crawl spaces. Control Rodent Populations Households with a mice or rat problem are also susceptible to predators that like to eat rodents. Addressing the first issue removes a major food source for snakes around your property and makes them less likely to hang around. Don’t Leave Food Around Speaking of food sources, if you have bird feeders or have other animals

you feed outdoors, store your supplies in sealed containers. When you host outdoor gatherings, clean up promptly so crumbs and spills don’t attract insects and rodents (and in turn, snakes). Promptly gather any fallen fruit from trees on your property as well. Practice Snake Safety It never hurts to exercise a little extra caution when you’re spending time in places where you might encounter snakes. Stay alert when pulling equipment out of sheds, going elbowdeep in garden weeds, walking around in the dark or moving piles of wood, rocks or debris. Educate family members, especially kids, on what to do if they see a snake: stay calm, don’t provoke it, give it space and tell someone. If you’re experiencing recurring snake sightings or issues on your property, it might be worth calling a professional. A wildlife removal or pest control specialist can look around your home and give you more specialized guidance on how to keep your spaces safe and snakefree. Visit eLivingtoday.com for additional home and garden guidance.

VA secures $10B+ in pharmaceutical price reductions so far in FY 2026 The Department of Veterans Affairs announced it has secured a record-high $10.44 billion in pharmaceutical price reductions so far in fiscal year 2026 – nearly double the value achieved in 2025. VA launched a major effort to secure lower prices on the pharmaceuticals the department uses most frequently to treat Veterans, and this effort has yielded the highest level of price reductions ever recorded. Lower prices on pharmaceuticals enable VA to treat more Veterans and focus on emerging therapies that can be more expensive at the beginning of their product life cycle. In FY 2024, VA achieved $5.23 billion in price reductions through these negotiations. VA achieved $7.99 billion in price reductions in FY 2025 and is benefitting from $10.44 billion in price reductions so far in FY 2026. Making the most effective use of congressional funding is just one of several steps VA is taking to serve

Veterans better. For example, VA has: • Enrolled more than 215,000 new Veterans in VA healthcare in 2026. • Opened 40 new VA healthcare facilities since Jan. 20, 2025, expanding healthcare access for Veterans around the country. • Reduced the backlog of Veterans waiting for VA benefits by more than 70% since Jan. 20, 2025. • Completed a record high 82,083,918 direct care appointments in FY 2025, up 4.1% from FY 2024. • Completed a record high 59,989,662 community care appointments in FY 2025, up 12% from FY 2024. • Offered Veterans more than 3.1 million appointments outside of normal operating hours, giving Veterans more timely and convenient options for care. • Permanently housed 51,936 homeless Veterans across the country in FY 2025, the highest total in seven years. Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ GARY MILLER

By Gary Miller

As a young teenager, many of my summer days were spent fishing at the local canal. I remember the unique art of catching carp using whole kernel corn as bait. I also remember the little country store where I bought that corn. What I remember most about that place, however, was not my corn purchases but my candy ones. Edna owned the store and she had a candy counter that was strategically placed just to one’s left as soon as you walked in. The glass front was positioned low enough for the smallest young’un’ to press his nose against and carefully decide just what sugary morsel he would purchase on that day. The patience of Edna had to be God-like. After all, there were a whole bunch of us youngsters that stood in line to make life-altering selections. And while those memories are special, there is still one more that exceeds the selection stage. It was post-purchase loitering. I can remember sitting on the front porch of Edna’s store with my Coke and candy. And I can still remember the wonderful cool sensation that I felt down my back when I would lay down on that smooth

concrete during the summer. The Coke, candy, and concrete made for the best recovery after a morning of fishing or baseball. I’m glad she never ran us off. Her hospitality and patience were always taken for granted until we were old enough to realize how special it really was. That’s the way most of life is. Rarely do we see the value in people or their actions until time has passed. This is especially true for the virtues that lack fanfare. Kindness, hospitality, and patience are naturally provided without pomp. They are abstract and bodiless and thus are lost most of the time in the shadow of more tangible acts. It is only as we pause and look back do we recall these quiet gestures that now stand out as monuments. If you can recall these moments maybe it is important that you make some of your own – to those who may not appreciate them until later. Kindness, hospitality, and patience are like the pocket change I once handed to Edna. It not only buys me initial satisfaction, but it also builds a porch for those who need a cool place to rest and recover. And everyone needs that.

7 TRICKS TO EASE BACK-TO-SCHOOL CHAOS WITH A LITTLE MAGIC

BE YE KIND...ONE TO ANOTHER

FEATURE IMPACT

Everyone could use a little more magic in their everyday lives – but when it comes to back-to-school season, “manic” often feels like the more accurate word. Between shopping for supplies, coordinating the family’s schedules and trying to make sure everyone is looking and feeling their best, there’s a lot going on this time of year. While you may not be able to wave a wand and make all the stress disappear, you can use these tips and tricks – courtesy of the haircut magicians at Great Clips – to save time and add a touch of excitement to the back-to-school season. Start Routines Early Instead of waiting for the first day of school to change all your routines, guide your family into the time warp a little more gradually. Shift sleep and wake times a week or two ahead of time so the early wakeups won’t come as such a shock to the system. Adapt meal schedules and other daily habits the same way. Before you know it, the spell will be complete and you’ll be ready to roll with the regular school-day schedules. Create a Special Backto-School Tradition Watching your kids’ eyes light up is its own mini dose of magic that never gets old. Start a fun new tradition to brighten their first day or week. That could be a special breakfast, new outfit, porch photoshoot, surprise gift for them to discover in their backpacks or another creative idea personalized to your family. Get a Convenient and Affordable Haircut A haircut can help children and parents get into the back-to-school spirit. That’s why Great Clips partnered with internet celebrity and magician Justin Flom, known for his mind-bending optical illusions, to help remind parents they don’t need complicated tricks to make

getting a back-toschool haircut a breeze. With the Great Clips app, parents can easily check in multiple family members at once, keep an eye on wait times and get notified when it’s their turn for a haircut. No illusions, no sleight of hand – just convenient, affordable haircuts that feel like much needed relief for parents. “Our goal is to help families spend less time

waiting and more time doing what matters during one of the busiest seasons of the year,” said Traci Elder, vice president of marketing and communications at Great Clips, Inc. “The Great Clips app helps families save time by making haircuts fit more seamlessly into their busy schedules and at a great price, too.” Plan Outfits Ahead of Time The morning rush often feels like the furthest thing from a fairytale. Take at least one groggy decision off your plate by choosing clothes the evening before – or even assembling a week’s worth of outfits on

Sunday and storing them in a special drawer that gives your child an instant portal to getting dressed. Personalize School Supplies From preferred colors to beloved characters, all kids have their favorites. Stock them up with pens, notebooks, lunchboxes and other supplies that match their current obsessions; that way, it’s more exciting to use them at school and show their swag off to their friends. Refresh the Study Space Homework time might look like less of a wizard battle if your kids have a special place to do it. Add some whimsy to their study spaces by putting up string lights, letting them pick out a new piece of furniture or art, and making their environment cozy and comfortable. Set School Year Goals As a family, take some time to figure out what each of you wants to achieve this year – and make it fun. Amp up the magic here by writing down your goals; then, keep track of progress by filling up a goal jar with shiny stars, swirly marbles or fun charms. Throughout the school year, set up different “quests” for your family to accomplish. Discover more about back-to-school haircut magic that saves you time and money at GreatClips. com/BacktoSchool.

Where has the time gone? Seems like yesterday, my twin niece and nephew were just beginning their first year of high school and last week they stepped into the first days of their last year at Chase High School. It was just a couple days ago they were heading to kindergarten. Across the county, my “little buddy” began his first year of high school at REaCH while his little sister headed to second grade at

Ellenboro. I remember just like it was yesterday when I got the call that this now high school freshman was about to be born. I was heading into a Town Council meeting in Forest City when my sister called me and informed me the baby was going to be born soon. When I walked out of the meeting, I clicked on my phone and sure enough there was a photo of the newborn greatnephew. He grew up fast. Further on down the road in Alabama, the other twins — boys — also walked into their second grade room. The day they were born, I was on an assignment in south Rutherford County when my sister called to share the news — the boys were going to be born that day. Pulling off the side of the road, I prayed for everyone involved as these two little guys were arriving

quite early. They turn 8 on August 31. Time sure has flown. Nothing seems to be the same as it was for my sisters and I when we headed off to school. But one thing that’s never changed for this generation of nieces and nephews and that is to be kind. When the school days are over and you look back on them, you’ll remember that favorite teacher or friend, cafeteria worker, bus driver and custodian, not by all the things they taught you and meant to you - you’ll remember their kindness they brought to you and others. In a world when you can be just about whatever you want — be kind. Kindness makes all the difference whatever season of life we’re in. Contact Jean Gordon at: gordonjean211@gmail.com

More Than Hair: How the Back-to-School Haircut Impacts Confidence (Feature Impact) For years, parents make nearly every style decision for their children - from first-day outfits to picture-day haircuts. Then, almost overnight, those little ones develop opinions of their own about what to wear and how to style their hair. As boys enter middle and high school, 84% of parents notice their sons care significantly or somewhat more about their appearance, based on results of a survey conducted by Atomik Research on behalf of Sport Clips Haircuts, a sportsthemed haircutting franchise specializing in haircuts for men and boys. What’s more, according to the American Psychological Association, physical appearance is an important part of adolescent identity, helping young people express themselves while also navigating social expectations and peer relationships. Those expectations have added more pressure on children and teens to present themselves well as nearly three-quarters of parents surveyed (71%) said boys today face more pressure to look put-together going into a new school year than they remember from their own school years. Haircuts are Becoming Part of Back-to-School Checklists While shopping for school supplies, organizing backpacks and choosing first-day outfits are all familiar traditions ahead of a new school year, scheduling a haircut is increasingly part of

the back-to-school agenda. While 20% of parents surveyed notice their child shift back into school mode when they pick out their firstday outfit, and another 19% said it’s when their sons pack or organize their bags, 71% said getting their son a fresh

a haircut is only one piece of the equation. Allowing them to choose clothes they feel comfortable wearing as well as having conversations about what they’re looking forward to (and what they’re nervous about) as another school year begins are also

haircut or new hairstyle has become a reliable part of their back-to-school routine. In fact, more than one-third of parents said their preteen or teenage sons are the ones asking for a back-to-school haircut. Another 22% said they bring it up around the same time, meaning more than half of boys are already thinking about how they’ll show up on the first day. The Connection Between Appearance and Confidence Ninety-five percent of parents surveyed said the way their son feels about his appearance influences how confidently he approaches school, sports and social activities. As boys age and want to choose their own style,

part of the preparations that can help boost self-esteem before they ever walk through the school doors. The Hairstyles Boys are Asking for This Year If you thought parents’ opinions about theirs sons’

haircuts mattered, think again. More than half of boys ages 11-17 know exactly what haircut they want before the school year begins. Parents report many are inspired by celebrities, athletes or digital creators. According to the survey, 30% of boys want a tapered fade like the one U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese wore during the 2026 World Cup. Nearly a quarter (24%) of respondents said their child wants a classic cut, similar to YouTuber Caylus Cunningham. Only 10% of boys are requesting a longer or shaggy style, like actor Jacob Elordi, and even fewer are looking for fringe bangs; the “broccoli cut,” which is short on the sides and curly on top; or a buzz cut. Whether it’s a subtle trim or a completely new style, the back-to-school haircut has evolved into one of the first opportunities each school year for boys to express themselves. the tree, and it withered. Many people look good on the outside but produce only leaves. On the other hand, the root is that which gives life to the plant. It is connected to the growth of the tree and provides stability. Deep-rooted people are the backbone of any family, workplace, or organization. They are fully invested in the mission. People who have deep spiritual roots can be counted on during the storms of life. Root people take ownership, but leaf people are consumers. Leaves always take more than they contribute. The Psalmist wrote it best: “And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

The Bible often uses metaphors to describe certain aspects of the Christian life. It’s amazing how common everyday things can illustrate spiritual truths. Jesus talked about -FUNERAL DIRECTOR- how a tree yields a specific type of fruit and how we can discern a person’s heart according to what kind of fruit he or she produces. The Apostle Paul compared the root system of a tree to the life source of a Christian. He exhorted the church to be rooted and grounded in the love of Christ. In the book of Psalms and Jeremiah the blessed man is one whose leaf does not wither because he is planted by the rivers of water. Without deep roots, the tree will eventually die. Sometimes we are more concerned about foliage than growing roots. During the passion week, Jesus approached a fig tree to satisfy His hunger. Even though the tree had an abundance of leaves it had no fruit. He pronounced a curse on

Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “From muscadine grapes grown in Eastern North Carolina to vinifera grapes, apples and honey produced across our state, these products create opportunities for farmers, support local businesses and give visitors another reason to experience North Carolina agriculture firsthand. When consumers choose North Carolina wine, cider and mead, they are supporting an agricultural industry that reaches far beyond the tasting room.” North Carolina has more than 200 wineries and vineyards and ranks among the top 10 wineproducing states in the country. The industry also plays an important role in agritourism, drawing visitors to vineyards, wineries, cideries and meaderies across the state and creating additional economic opportunities in rural communities. The competition highlights the breadth of North Carolina’s craft beverage industry, ranging from the state’s native muscadine grapes to European vinifera varieties, sparkling wines, barrel-aged meads and ciders made in a variety of traditional and modern styles. “The 2026 competition shows just how much innovation is happening across North Carolina while our producers continue to celebrate what makes this state distinctive,” said Nicole

Chesney, executive director of the N.C. Wine & Grape Council. “These wines, ciders and meads tell a North Carolina story through the fruit, honey, people and places behind every bottle. Recognition at this level helps introduce consumers to exceptional products while strengthening the reputation of North Carolina as a serious wine and craft beverage destination.” The N.C. Wine Competition is the state’s premier competition for commercially produced wine, cider and mead. Entries are judged blind, with judges evaluating products on appearance, aroma, taste, finish and overall impression using the American Wine Society 20-point scale. Wines eligible for an N.C. Wine Cup must be made with a minimum of 75% North Carolina fruit or honey.
