Tonya Garrison loves people. That love is expressed publicly in her new role as director of the Rutherford County Senior Center. She began at the center as a program manager in 2025. Recently, in July 2026, she became the director.

Garrison also is an ordained minister, and serves as pastor of Lafayette Street Church in Shelby.

In both of these roles, Garrison builds relationships and inspires people to live abundantly.

A new Tribute Garden recently opened on the grounds of the Senior Center, which is located on Callahan Koon Road in Spindale. This Tribute Garden, Garrison says, will not only honor seniors who have passed, but will be a blessing to those who are living.

“We honor the past, and celebrate those legacies,” Garrison said recently. “This garden is a place where people can meditate, talk with each other, or sit quietly with a book.”

The Tribute Garden project was initiated by the Senior Center’s former director Tammy Aldridge before her recent retirement, and cost approximately $20,000. It includes a water fountain, various flowers and plants and other landscaping, along brick pavers.

Brick pavers may be purchased as a memorial to a loved one, or to honor and celebrate individuals who still living. They can be engraved with a name.

Garrison often describes the Senior Center as a family. The Tribute Garden adds to the family atmosphere, providing a space to enjoy the outdoors with friends, or a space for an individual to simply sit and read or meditate.

Garrison is happy to see the Tribute Garden come to fruition. And she is excited as more people use it, and as it expands. More landscaping and other features may be added in the future.

The Senior Center is used by about 400 people each day. Approximately 100-120 meals are served at the center, while another 225 meals are delivered to homes through the Meals on Wheels program.

“Each month, we serve a total of 7,500 congregant and home delivered meals,” Garrison explained.

As director of the Senior Center, Garrison is pleased when she hears people say the Rutherford County Senior Center compares favorably to others across North Carolina.

“There are many wonderful Senior Centers across

our state, but so many people tell us we offer more programs than many,” Garrison said. “People often point out that our center is very welcoming.”

Garrison believes the Senior Center absolutely improves the quality of life of its participants.

“I like to think every human being deserves to live abundantly. Just because we get older doesn’t mean we can’t continue to live abundantly, live in community, and be physically fit. There are many elements to overall well-being: physical, mental, and spiritual,” Garrison said. “Here at the Senior Center it is evident Rutherford County has invested in the older populations with the hope that we continue thriving. Older adults have so much wisdom and experience to share. I am so lucky to be a part of this fabulous ‘family’ here at the Senior Center.”

Garrison says she understands that many people may still be unaware of the Senior Center’s existence. And if they hear the term, they may mistakenly think of it as some sort of nursing home or care center.

“We are really more like a club for those who are age 55-plus,” she said. “We offer top rate exercise and fitness classes such as yoga, pilates, line dancing, aerobics, tai chi, self-defense, and more.”

“Daily activities and games,” Garrison said, “... include cornhole, table tennis, billiards, and chair volleyball. We also have a horseshoe pit, bocce court, and soon our shuffleboard court will be restored along with a brand new pickleball court. People are often shocked by the amount, and variety, of activities we offer.”

Garrison says the Senior Center enables seniors to live life more abundantly. She encourages members of the public to stop by for a tour, check out the Tribute Garden, and consider joining. Hours of operation are weekdays 7:30am-4pm.

Partially established in 2022 with considerable expansion in 2026, Good Company is the collaborative effort of Harvest, her partner, Jacob Burges, and his parents, Stephen Burges and Laura Ponder, all of whom have agriculture backgrounds.

Their acreage is located in Rutherfordton, NC, and they are currently growing food on a third of an acre with plans to expand to two acres in a few years.

Harvest fell in love with farming while attending Warren Wilson College in Black Mountain, NC, and currently works for the Community Farm Stop of Rutherford County. Jacob’s experience includes working locally on Old North Farm in Cleveland County and internationally on

a farm in Italy through the organization World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. Good Company’s resident beekeeper, Stephen, got his start in farming when he was a young adult working on a large fruit farm in the UK. Some farmers and gardeners in Rutherford County may recognize Laura as a former agent with the NC Cooperative Extension in Spindale, and now a horticulture professor at Blue Ridge Community College. Because they share many of the same farming values, this team of four works well together.

Long story short Good Company plans to embody the interconnectedness of farming!

No returns equal those that come from giving

by Pat Jobe Mike Nanney is a local friend to so many and a former East High football stand out. He also became legendary when Tommy Hicks used him as a fictional character in made-up wrestling matches with other locals in the forerunner of this publication, The Amazin’ Shopper. Hicks also published a weekly recipe and called it “Cooking With Mike Nanney.”

Hicks once cut Nanney’s picture out of a photo and glued it on a photo of a suit of armor. He published it as Nanney’s way of avoiding mosquito bites.

A few days ago Nanney learned Rutherford Weekly was hoping to help recruit new volunteers for the Home Delivered Meals program of the Senior Center.

“It is the most rewarding thing I have ever done in

my life,” Nanney said of volunteering in the meals program.

Think about that.

Nanney is like a lot of what Lee Harrill calls, “old Forest City boys.” We went to the same schools, flirted with a lot of the same girls, bet our lives on growing up and living not all that differently from our parents and other adults we lived around.

Out of all those scenes, Nanney calls that volunteer work “most rewarding.”

There are studies out there that show people who volunteer in programs like Home Delivered Meals are happier than people who don’t volunteer at all. Can you do it?

Connie Smith, who is in charge of the program, says they really need help. Of course, their really needing that help may not be enough to get you involved. You may have lots of reasons to not do it. That’s okay, and you know Jesus still loves you.

But what if that “most reward thing” is out there and you pass it by? You’ll never know.

And you might do it once or twice and find out you don’t like it. At that point, you

could quit.

And you’re right if you remember that last week’s column was about this, too. Why write about it two weeks in a row? It’s that phrase “most rewarding” that keeps coming back. I heard another friend talk about the rewards of giving money and time just the other day.

She said she had never felt anything quite as powerful, quite as rewarding.

Rutherford County has a long list of wonderful groups who need volunteers and financial support: Yokefellow, Blue Ridge Hope, Grace

of God Rescue Mission, MDCC’s Day of Caring with Rutherford Housing Partnership, Salvation Army, and you can bet I left some good ones out. Home Delivered Meals is just one that is needing help right now. Please help. We are living through a time when long-time volunteers are aging out. Folks in the 70’s and 80’s need to be replaced by folks in the 50’s and 60’s and even younger if there is any spare time at all.

Rutherford Life Services celebrates 60th anniversary Sixty years ago Dr. Charles Griffith and wife Dee of Forest City became concerned about what would happen to their son, Chuck, and other children with disabilities when their school days were completed. He gathered a group of local citizens and from that meeting the Rutherford Vocational Workshop was formed. That organization, now known as Rutherford Life Services (RLS), held a 60th anniversary celebration last week. Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to ride in the train, ride

the bull, get an icee and enjoy a cheeseburger and fries for lunch.

The workshop, which provided care and work opportunities, was housed in the old Harris school for 10 years. In 1976 the workshop moved to the first building on the current campus located on Fairground Road.

The next concern arose for those getting older toward retirement age. That led to the purchase of a building on Thunder Road for an adult day care facility to provide activities for older people with disabilities.

There was a children’s day care facility next door, which RLS also took over. Later The

Learning Tree also became part of Rutherford Life Services.

Director Amanda Freeman, who has been with RLS for 30 years, said their goal is to provide good services to individuals “from the cradle to the grave.” Those coming to the campus on Fairground Road can participate in projects being done for local businesses or just do fun things. Amanda says they do worktype projects for local businesses although the number of opportunities decreased with the closing of many textile plants in the county.

RLS also purchased a building in Downtown Forest City and operates a store called Utopia.

T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament held

The Rutherford County Sports Hall Of Fame (RCSHOF) presented by Hardin’s Drug, recently held their annual T. Max Champion Memorial Golf Tournament.

The tournament was held at Apple Valley Golf Club in Lake Lure to raise money for the RCSHOF Scholarship Fund which awards scholarships to students at each of the NCHSAAaffiliated high schools in

Rutherford County.

This year’s tournament was an unqualified success, featuring 29 four-person teams for a total of 116 players.

Winners in each category: • First Place Gross: Randy Allen, Robert Litaker, Patrick Waters and Jack Huss • Second Place Gross: Mitch Jolley, Danny Abraham, Todd Webber and Todd Whitehead

• First Place Net: James Henson, SaiGe Harris, Kevin Bradley and Aiden Spratt • Second Place Net: Ryan Riffe, John Beck, Shane Wright and Brian McMahan • Longest Drive: SaiGe Harris • Closest To The Pin: Fred Mann T. Max Champion’s football coaching career spanned over five decades.

Champion coached football at East Rutherford, Chase and R.S. Central. He also coached baseball at East Rutherford.

Champion coached football for a total of 36 years and baseball for 12. Champion was a 1969 East Rutherford graduate and 1974 Appalachian State graduate. He began his career in education as the driver’s education teacher at East Rutherford.

Champion was a

founding member of the Rutherford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. His guidance and leadership were an integral part in the success of RCSHOF. Champion served as a board member from 2017 until his death on April 19th, 2021. The Rutherford County Sports Hall of Fame annual golf tournament is

named in his memory.

T. Max Champion will not be remembered as just a coach. He is also be remembered as a man of faith, son, husband, father, grandfather and mentor to the thousands of kids he came in contact with during his life.

T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights Returns; East Rutherford High School a week 1 winner

Thirty North Carolina high schools have each won $5,000 through T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights program — money they can use for needs such as new helmets, weight room equipment, uniforms or travel costs. Now, each school is also in the running for a $1 million field upgrade.

North Carolina has already built momentum in the program: since Friday Night 5G Lights launched in 2024, 38 schools across the state have won a combined $240,000, including Rosewood High School in Goldsboro, a Top 25 finalist last year, and Salisbury High School, a Top 16 finalist in 2024. Both Rosewood and Salisbury won $25,000. This year’s winners stretch across the state, from the Triangle and Triad to the foothills, mountains and coastal communities.

East Rutherford High School was among the first 30 North Carolina school winners during week 1.

North Carolina schools have already had strong national showings: Rosewood High School in Goldsboro was a Top 25 finalist last year, and Salisbury High School was a Top 16 finalist in 2024.

Both schools won $25,000 through the program.

Now in its third season, Friday Night 5G Lights supports smaller communities where high school football is often the center of Friday night life.

North Carolina’s Week 1 winners include schools from rural communities and football towns across the state — giving local programs an early boost while following

the path of previous North Carolina finalists that turned community support into $25,000 wins.

This year, the program will award more than $8.4 million in total prizes. In addition to the $5,000 each of these schools has already received, every eligible school that applies has a chance to move on and compete for additional prizes, including 40 regional finalists will win $25,000 each, four Division Champions will win $250,000 each, and one school will receive the $1

million field upgrade. Public voting runs October 8–25 at FridayNight5GLights.com, where anyone in the country can vote once per day.

• Double check your privacy settings.

Review your social media account’s privacy settings regularly. Be mindful of who can view your posts. You may want to remove personal information from your account that others can see, such as your telephone number or address.

• Watch out for phony friend requests.

Don’t accept friend requests from strangers. Also, think twice before you accept a friend request from someone you are already connected with. It could be an impostor trying to access your information and friends list.

• Practice good cybersecurity habits.

If you’re using personally identifiable information in your passwords, or if you’re using the same password for multiple accounts, it’s time to do some password management.

lower donor turnout this summer. “This summer has brought a number of unique challenges that have placed additional strain on our blood supply, creating growing concerns for hospitals and the patients who rely on lifesaving transfusions,” said Paul Sullivan, senior vice president of donor services for the Red Cross.

“If just three more donors gave at each blood drive this summer, we could help the blood supply rebound and ensure hospitals have the blood products they need throughout the remainder of the season.”

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at checkin. Individuals who are

18 years of age in North Carolina (17 and under with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. WNC AgOptions Opens 2027 Grant Cycle for Western NC Farmers Scenes from Golden Valley by Terri Ward

WNC Communities is pleased to announce that the WNC AgOptions grant program is now accepting proposals for the 2027 grant cycle. The program continues its long tradition of helping family farms in Western North Carolina strengthen their businesses through projects that increase efficiency, diversify income, improve profitability, and support long-term sustainability.

The 2027 cycle is made possible through the continued support of the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.

Grants of $10,000 will be awarded to eligible farm businesses for projects that strengthen or expand their operations.

“The N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission is proud to partner with WNC Communities in supporting farmers across the region. Through the WNC AgOptions program, farmers can strengthen their existing operations or explore innovative new ventures that help ensure long-term profitability and sustainability,” said Bill Teague, Chair of the N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.

Farmers interested in applying must contact their county Cooperative Extension Agent

by October 9, 2026, to discuss their proposed project. After making that contact, applicants must submit the required Intent to Apply form by October 9 at https://go.ncsu.edu/wncagopt27.

Completed hardcopy or digital applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on November 9, 2026, to be considered for review.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend one of the regional information sessions held across the region through September. Full session details, eligibility requirements, application materials, and instructions are available at www. wncagoptions.org.

Isothermal Community College building grand opening planned for October

The final construction work and landscaping at the Dr. Bobby F. England Health and Sciences Center at Isothermal Community College continues as the new $32 million facility is expected to open in October. The 55,000 square foot, three-story building will greatly expand the regional nursing and allied health capacity. The facility is funded largely by a $30 million appropriation from the NC General Assembly.

Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ

By Gary Miller The only time I can remember being without a dog was during my college years. They have been a part of my life ever since I was a child. I even raised and sold pups for a few years. But even though I have always had a dog, I don’t consider myself a dog lover.

The reason is that I have met a few people who truly are. To them, their dog is a close family member and is treated as such. Two GARY MILLER of my dear friends are dog lovers. Not only have I witnessed their furry affection, but I have watched them grieve deeply over the loss of their four-legged friends. It was the same grief I have seen in so many people over the years.

Tears, heartache, questions, and even anger were as real as if they had lost a blood relative. I grieved with them. They are dog lovers.

But my home had never been like that until Snatch came along. Snatch came from the local animal shelter. My son picked him out for his own family but because of circumstances had to hand him over to us. He soon became my wife and grandson’s dog. They treated him like royalty and made sure he lived a life of canine luxury. In return, Snatch obeyed every instruction they uttered. Every single one. If a visiting dog came to our house, Snatch accepted it. When our children had babies, Snatch recognized them as part of the family. He has been nearly the perfect dog. In dog years, he is now in his 80s (or older). Recently he began losing weight and after a trip to the vet, we discovered a mass that is terminal. His last days are coming this week. My dog lovers are grieving. And this time, I am grieving too.

I have so much I want to say about God and dogs. I want to remind you that there are souls that are not human. And dogs are among God’s creations that have a soul. I want to remind you that dogs reveal the grace of God in that they are always waiting for you to return, no matter what you have just done. I want to remind you that God gave dogs purpose. They serve and love. They give comfort and security. Dogs are evidence for the existence of God. Only God could create something so complete. And yet, my dog-loving friend John wondered why God didn’t allow man’s best friend to live a longer life. I mean an alligator can live up to 80 years. But who wants a pet alligator? Why are our life-giving, therapeutic, love-filled dogs with us for only a relatively short period of time? I pondered that question. And the only answer I know is that God knew there would be more dogs than there would be dog lovers. So, to give each pup an opportunity to love and be loved, He made their lives shorter so that humans could love several of them during their own lifetimes. Dog lovers are not simply pet owners. They are a special breed of humans who have been given a gift to love a special breed of animals. And while they will grieve more than most throughout their lives, perhaps they will love longer and deeper as well.

The N.C. Mountain State Fair is still accepting competition entries, and residents in Western North Carolina can utilize the free Pony Express program to save themselves a trip to the fairgrounds in Fletcher.

The Pony Express, a partnership between the N.C. Mountain State Fair and the N.C. Cooperative Extension, looks to increase participation by children, teens and adults in fair competitions. Participants in over a dozen Western North Carolina counties can register their fair entries online, bring their nonperishable entries – wrapped and packed for transport – and entry forms to their local county extension office where they will be picked up and transported to the Mountain State Fair for judging and display.

“Entering a competition is one of the best ways for people to be a part of the N.C. Mountain State Fair,” said Fair Manager Jeff Barham. “The Pony Express program makes entering a competition easy and saves time for first-time entrants and longtime participants alike.”

Entries must be registered online and dropped off at a local extension office by Aug. 28 at 11:30am. After the fair, all items will be returned to the local county extension

offices for participants to pick up by Sept. 30.

Any prize money will be mailed directly to participants.

Setting Boundaries Curiosity should be encouraged, but safe boundaries remain essential. When children become interested in something unsafe, simply saying “no” may stop the behavior, but it does little to support learning. Instead, explain why something is unsafe and redirect curiosity toward an appropriate alternative.

For example, if your child wants to explore knives, explain knives can hurt people then

offer safe cooking tools or supervised kitchen activities to investigate instead.

September 21 through October 7, 2026 Operation Carolina When: September 21 through October 7 More Info: Operation Carolina is a 700-mile solo run across North Carolina, Murphy to the Outer Banks. It is roughly 40 miles a day for 17 straight days. Jonathan Milkovich, an Army veteran and the Executive Director of Operation WarriorFit, a 501(c)(3) in Fletcher is running it alone. The route comes through Rutherford County on Day 5, Friday, September 25. That day crosses over from Polk County into Rutherford County and runs through Rutherfordton, Spindale, and Forest City, then through Ellenboro.

Day 6 picks up in Rutherford County the next morning, September 26, heading toward Cleveland County. Operation WarriorFit places donated race entries with vetted veterans, service members, and first responders for a flat $9.95 commitment fee.

Statewide Campaign to Increase Awareness of Life-Saving Text-to-911 The N.C. 911 Board, which operates under the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT), has launched a statewide public service announcement (PSA) campaign to raise awareness of Text-to-911. This critical service allows residents to reach emergency responders by text message when calling 911 is not possible or safe.

The 16-week campaign goal is to ensure the public understands when and how to use Text-to-911, especially in situations where every second counts.

Text-to-911 is designed to support individuals who may be: • Unable to speak due to a medical emergency • In unsafe situations where placing a voice call could increase the risk of harm • Deaf, hard of hearing, or experiencing a speech-related disability The PSA reinforces a message central to public safety: “Call if you can, text if you

can’t.” Ensuring residents know this option exists can directly influence how quickly emergency responders can reach them.

“When calling is not possible or safe, texting gives people another lifeline to reach trained 911 professionals who are ready to respond,” said L.V. Pokey Harris, Executive Director of the N.C. 911 Board.

NCDIT leadership underscored the importance of statewide awareness of this capability.

“Everyone should be able to reach 911, even when making a voice call is not possible or safe,” said Nate Denny, NCDIT Secretary and State Chief Information Officer, who chairs the N.C. 911 Board. “Text-to-911 provides a critical connection to emergency assistance, and this campaign will help ensure North Carolinians know that when they cannot call, they can still reach help.”

In 2025, more than 70,000 Text-to-911 messages were sent to emergency communication centers across North

Carolina. This high volume underscores the essential role Text-to-911 plays in providing residents with multiple, reliable ways to reach help during an emergency.

This statewide campaign reflects the

N.C. 911 Board’s ongoing commitment to strengthening public safety and making emergency communications accessible to every resident, no matter their circumstances.

Local Libraries Celebrate America 250

The members of Foothills Library Consortium are collaborating on several programs for the community in celebration of America 250 this fall.

Beginning in August, the Rutherford County libraries are asking for original photographs or works of art that answer the question, “what does freedom mean to me?” The submissions must

be no larger than 8x10” and include a brief description explaining how the art expresses the artist’s idea of freedom. Creations can be displayed anonymously upon request.

The submissions will be displayed at the library that receives them, giving participants the chance to display their work at Haynes Branch Library, Mooneyham Public Library, Mountains Branch Library, Norris Public Library, Rutherford County Library, or Spindale Public Library. Submissions from any age group are welcome. The displays will run throughout the month of September.

“Today, more than ever, ‘what freedom means to me’ is a provocative question

that hopefully can encourage thoughtful consideration and meaningful dialogue in divisive times,” said Amy Taylor, librarian for Spindale Public Librarian and mastermind behind the collaborative art display.

The Consortium is also coming together for a special America 250-themed trivia night hosted by Top Shelf Trivia on Monday, September 21st at Rutherford County Library. The trivia questions will focus on American history and culture, with prizes awarded to the top three scores. Refreshments will also be served. Understanding wildfire risk after Hurricane Helene Hurricane Helene left behind damaged forests, downed timber and reduced access in communities across Western North Carolina. In some locations, those conditions have increased the long-term risk of wildfire impacts to homes, infrastructure and natural resources.

One of the most important places to reduce wildfire risk is the area immediately surrounding a home, known as the home ignition zone, or HIZ. What is a home ignition zone?

The home ignition zone (HIZ) is the home itself and the surrounding area that influences how vulnerable a structure may be during a wildfire.

Research has shown that the condition of a home and the vegetation surrounding it have a significant impact on whether a home survives a wildfire.

The HIZ is typically divided into three zones: • 0-5 feet (Immediate Zone) This is the most critical area around a home.

Leaves, pine needles, mulch, firewood and other combustible materials should be removed whenever possible. Roofs, gutters, decks and other attachments should be kept clear of debris that could ignite from airborne embers.

• 5-30 feet (Intermediate Zone) This area focuses on reducing continuous vegetation around the home. Spacing between plants, shrubs and trees can help reduce fire intensity and slow the spread of flames toward structures.

• 30-100 feet (Extended Zone) The goal in this area is to reduce fuel buildup and interrupt a wildfire’s path. Thinning vegetation, removing dead material and creating more open spaces can help keep fires smaller and closer to the ground.

Together, these actions can help reduce wildfire risk around homes, improve firefighter access and increase the likelihood that structures survive a wildfire.

Remove from stove and add ice. Liquid should be cool to touch.

Add pork chops to liquid, cover and refrigerate 4-6 hours, or overnight.

Approximately 10-15 minutes before grilling, heat grill to medium heat, remove chops from brine and pat dry with paper towels. Season with freshly ground black pepper and sea salt.

Grill until desired doneness, or until internal temperature reaches at least 145 F for medium finish.

Garnish with scallions.

GRILLED PORK AND MANGO KEBABS WITH CHILI SAUCE For the chili sauce: 1⁄2 cups rice wine vinegar 1 tablespoon sesame oil 1 tablespoon fish sauce 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 1⁄4 teaspoon caster sugar 2 red chilies, sliced For the kebabs: 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard 1 cup pineapple juice 1 lime, juiced 1 teaspoon salt 1⁄2 teaspoon freshly ground black peppercorns 11⁄4pound pork tenderloin, trimmed of silver skin and cut into chunks 1 large ripe mango Olive oil, for brushing 1 handful small mint leaves For the chili sauce: Whisk together all the ingredients for the chili sauce in a saucepan. Warm over low heat, stirring until sugar and salt dissolve. Set aside.

For the kebabs: Preheat a grill to a moderately hot temperature.

Stir together mustard, pineapple juice, lime juice, salt, and pepper. Add pork, stir well to coat, and set aside until the grill is preheated.

In the meantime, halve and pit mango. Cut away the skin before cutting the flesh into cubes.

Thread pork onto skewers, alternating with mango.

Brush grates of the grill with olive oil.

Lay kebabs on the grill and cook, turning occasionally, until pork and mango are lightly charred, about 8 to 10 minutes.

Remove from grill to a plate and let rest for 5 minutes, covered loosely with aluminium foil.

Scatter with mint leaves and serve with the chili sauce on the side.

100 Years Ago This Month: Historical events from August 1926

The month of August has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in August 1926.

• A thrown dagger narrowly misses the head of Spanish dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera on August 1 in Barcelona. A 34-yearold anarchist is arrested for the failed assassination attempt.

• The French passenger ship S.S. Lotus strikes the Turkish freighter S.S. Bozkourt on August 2. Eight passengers drown, and the captain of the Lotus is eventually charged with liability for the deaths by Turkish authorities.

• On August 3, the Mount Batur volcano on the island of Bali erupts for the first time since 1917. The village of Karang Anyar is destroyed during the eruption, but all residents safely evacuate.

• Shortly before noon on August 3, the first traffic lights in London come into operation at Piccadilly Circus.

• Sultan bin Zayed Khalifa Al Nahyan is killed by his half-brother, Saqr bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on August 4. Four years prior to his death, Sultan bin Zayed had teamed up with Saqr bin Zayed to kill their brother, Emir Hamdan bin Zeyed, and seize the throne of Abu Dhabi.

• Magician and escape artist Harry Houdini survives being sealed in a coffin and lowered into a swimming pool at a New York City hotel on August 5. Houdini, who would die from peritonitis less than three months after the stunt, used controlled breathing to remain conscious within the coffin for one hour and 31 minutes.

• The first British Grand Prix is held at the Brooklands motor racing circuit near Surrey, England, on August 7. Frenchman Louis Wagner wins the inaugural race.

• A hurricane strikes Nova Scotia on August 10. Two fishing boats capsize during the storm, claiming the lives of 48 individuals.

• Richard Reese Whittemore, the leader of a group of bank robbers active in the midAtlantic and eastern United States in the mid1920s, is hanged on August 13. Whittemore’s wife, Margaret, also was arrested but was

never convicted for her role in the robberies.

• Father Luis Bátiz Sainz is arrested by Mexican government agents in the state of Zacatecas on August 14. The arrest is part of a government-orchestrated purge of Roman Catholic clerics, and Bátiz is executed by firing squad the next day.

• A coffin brought from Norway arrives in London on August 16. The coffin is believed to contain the remains of British Army officer and colonial administrator Field Marshal Herbert Kitchener, but the coroner finds the coffin contains only tar upon opening it in the presence of police. The stunt is later deemed a hoax.

• Marshal Józef Pilsudski conducts a purge of the Polish military on August 21. The purge is conducted to remove any potential challenges to Pilsudski’s authority.

• A bloodless coup overthrows Greek dictator Theodoros Pangalos on August 22. The coup is led by General Georgios Kondylis, who places Pangalos on the naval destroyer Pergamos.

• Popular Italian film actor Rudolph Valentino dies in New York on August 23. Valentino, just 31 at the time of his death, underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix eight days prior to his death but was stricken with a case of then-untreatable pleuritis while convalescing on August 21.

• Forty-four coal miners are killed after an explosion at a Clearfield Bituminous Coal Corporation mine in Clymer, Pennsylvania, on August 26.

• Dutch Levsen of the Cleveland Indians starts and wins both games of a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox on August 28.

Levsen is the last pitcher in Major League Baseball to start and win each game of a twin bill. Levsen, who won just 21 games over the course of his six-year career, also is the last pitcher to throw two nine-inning complete games on the same day.

• The last voting rights of Italians are removed when the Fascist government abolishes the popular elections of municipal officials on August 30.

State Capitol Offers Special Tour Focusing on Ancient Symbolism in NC Join the North Carolina State Capitol during August to revisit a special tour series, “Ancient Inspirations.”

WANT TO MEET ME FOR A HAMBURGER?

By: Jean Gordon Following a recent dinner of mixed cereal topped with blueberries, I read the latest publication of Cardinal & Pine.

What caught my attention more than a confirmed tornado in western North Carolina, was the mention of the state’s best hamburger restaurant locations.

Among the hamburger restaurants mentioned were located in Siler City, Sanford, Charlotte, Lexington, Durham, Ocean Isle Beach, Mocksville, Cherryville and a few others.

Perhaps, one of the best in North Carolina, in my opinion and not mentioned in the Cardinal & Pine list is located in downtown Forest City — Slim’s — my favorite and it can’t be beat when it comes to burgers and its many other menu items.

But first, a few Cardinal & Pine’s descriptions of other hamburger joints in North Carolina.

“Jimmy Buffett made himself a billionaire by singing about things like eating cheeseburgers on the beach.

He was on to something,” said one author. “So is Beaches Burgers, an Outer Banks destination that’s legit, and you can tell because they serve their food on that red and white checkered wax paper that all the best diners use,” said another.

“They have something called a “biggie challenge.”

If you can eat their large chili cheese fries and their “biggie”—a “huge” double cheeseburger—you get a free Koozie,” said the writer.

Siler City apparently has been around since 1946.

About Brooks’ Sandwich House at Ocean Isle Beach, “They’ve been serving up burgers since 1973, which means all the trendy condos in the area grew around them like weeds and they stayed the same. Respect the little red shack.”

The Shake Shop in Cherryville serves burgers — Carolina Style with mustard, chili, coleslaw and onions, it’s all the-way.

At the Cherryville Shake Shop there is a Lottaburger— two patties inside a hoagiestyle bun with slaw, tomato and pickle. No chili. No ketchup. No exceptions.

Hamburgers have been that way since 1943, when textile mill workers flooded in after shifts. Locals still pack the small eatery today, washing their Lottaburgers down with their signature Cherry Lemon SunDrop—a crimson-hued concoction of SunDrop, cherry juice, candied cherries, lemon slices and lemon juice, wrote Cardinal & Pine.

And here in Forest City, Slim’s offers a great hamburger and you can get it your way — all the way, cheese, mustard, slaw, mayo, lettuce, tomato, onions, chili, ketchup. My great-niece prefers her hamburger with mayo on both sides of the bun, but absolutely no burger.

Slim’s, with owner Thomas Melton, is good all the way around. Meeting families and friends and even finding a seat on the tailgate of an old truck, parked inside the restaurant.

But long, long before Slim’s, the Shake Shop in Spindale or even Spake’s or other notable places, I was most acquainted with Keller’s Cafe in Spindale.

I was a mere child, a long

time ago now it seems, when our family would walk into Keller’s on a Saturday. We didn’t go often, but when we did, it was a genuine treat for the Gordon girls. We’d often climb on one of the stools at the bar where right before our very eyes hamburgers were frying in pans of grease and were flipped by Mr. Keller.

There was always a kind hello and “how are you?”

You’d call out your order, sometimes, and right then your custom burger was being prepared. I don’t remember anything about fries, but I know there were potato chips and Coca Colas in the small glass bottles.

Keller’s also had the best hot dogs and beef dogs ever.

Tables were scattered throughout the small restaurant’s wooden floors where families might sit and wait on their hamburgers and catch up on the latest news.

Today, each time I drive along Spindale Street in Spindale, a flood of memories come to me as I pass the location where Keller’s was located. It wasn’t just where the best ‘burgers in town were served, but also the place where families, friends, textile mill workers from nearby Spindale Mills and Stonecutter, gathered for a great meal and no doubt appreciated the the kindness of the Kellers and fellowship of the patrons who for years gathered for so much more than a pan fried hamburger.

I’m glad I came across the Cardinal & Pine newsletter, as I had a great trip down memory lane to Keller’s Cafe.

I can literally see the Kellers, who seemed to me to be really tall and always with the full length white apron tied around their waists and a white chef’s hat.

Mike was the son of the late Robert Austin Moore and Betty Eugene Causby Moore.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jocelyne Moore; his son, Josh Moore; stepdaughter, Yahaira Feliz (Virgilio); sisters, Kristi Ellenburg (Barry) and Lisa Curtis (Larry); grandchildren, Ricardo Feliz and Ian Gabriel Feliz; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was a graduate of TriHigh School, class of 1959.

She worked for the Fairfax County Police Department in administration and communications for 36 years before retirement. Jane was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church where she served on numerous committees.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Edward “Eddy” Ayres, Jr. and infant son, John Ayres and son-in-law, Dave Granahan.

Those left to cherish her memory include daughters, Cynthia Jerome (Paul) of Reston, VA and Donna Granahan of Grandy; including her granddaughters and their spouses, Samantha (Daniel) and Nicole (Michael) and great grandchildren, Jason “J.P.”, Charlie, Brody, Katie and Madison.

The only thing within our power is how we react when a new season begins in the story of our life. The wise person will realize that a Sovereign God is the one who controls the seasons of life. One of the greatest discoveries in life are the lessons to be learned during each season and how they apply to future seasons. Charles Raymond “Charlie” Lewis Charles Raymond “Charlie” Lewis, 73, of Ellenboro, died Friday, July 31, 2026.

He is the son of Pauline Lewis of Cumberland, MD and the late Chuck Lewis.

Charlie served many years as a magistrate in Rutherford County. He was a US Marines veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Kim Toney Lewis; his daughters, Taylor Lewis of Ellenboro, and Erin Lewis Suddreth and husband Jacob, of Lenoir; his special friend, Lydia Arrowood; his sister, Kathy Brubaker and husband Frank, of Cumberland, MD; his brother, Bruce Lewis and wife Ellen of Milford, DE. A Memorial Service was held August 4 at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Conner and Rev. Ad Hopper officiating. The Rutherford County Honor Guard rendered military rites.

Kenneth Cox, Jr. Kenneth Cox, Jr., Born March 10, 1937 in Yuma, Colorado was one of 11 kids. He began working early bagging potatoes at 15. At 18 he married the love of his life, Darlene Krickbaum.

Not long after they married, they moved to Brighton, CO where he began as a custodian and worked his way quickly into a maintenance position with the school system until he retired.

They then purchased Band Wagon Music in Durango, CO which they ran together for 30 years before retirement. In 2020, they moved to Rutherfordton, NC to be near their grandkids.

Ken’s son Dennis preceded him in death in 2010.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Darlene (whom he called Dolly), his son, Kenneth “Daniel” Cox (Karen) of Bella Vista, AR and Sandy Bain (Jim) whom he claims as a daughter, grandkids Kenneth “Richard” Cox (Renee) of Union Mills; Christina Greene (Andy) of Rutherfordton; Brittany Baez (Jonathan) of Cary; and Jennifer Bain of Oceanside, CA, eight great grandchildren Drew and Rachel Greene; Caleb and Timothy Cox; Miracle, Oceana, Netanya and Reign Baez, one sister Shirley Huff (Jim) and one brother Norman Cox (Marcia) of Greeley, CO. He will be remembered for being a hardworking, generous, sweet, kind, fun, funny, patient man that showed God’s love in action to his family and many other people.

Patricia was born March 27, 1953 in Gaston County, NC to the late Fred Lineberger and Ruby Stroupe Lineberger. She was a graduate of Dallas High School, class of 1971.

Patricia worked many years in the textile industry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Lineberger.
