Suzy Beard presents the Beard Bell to Atrium Health CMC Main 4-B in memory of her husband Howard Beard. (Photo provided)
The Beard Bell rings hope Howard Beard fought a type of blood cancer called Myelodysplastic (MDS) syndrome. He spent 14 of the next 18 months in the hospital in Charlotte fighting this disease. He received a bone marrow transplant on May 31, but other complications prevented him from getting better. After a hard fight, Howard passed away on August 1, 2018. The Beard family want to honor their loved one and thank the 4-B staff at Atrium Health – CMC Main for the care, kindness, and love they had for Howard and his wife
Suzy during the long hospital stays. From that desire, the idea of the Beard Bell was formed. “Patients will ring the bell when they leave the hospital. It represents the completion of their journey, whether it be in-part or all. Either way, it represents completion and patients ring the bell as they depart,” said Suzy. “The purpose, and hopefully the satisfaction, will be when people ask about the Beard Bell and what it means. The nurses can enlighten them on Howard’s story, to the fact that he didn’t give up, he fought with dignity, kindness, and even humor sometimes. And even though he didn’t make it, he fought the battle. Hopefully the staff can enlighten people on our
love for one another during this most difficult journey of our lives.” The Beard family plans a blood drive this October and hopes to make this an annual event. Suzy said, “I want the length of time Howard fought this disease to matter and to do something to help others. The disease requires many blood transfusions, so we hope our efforts can help with that.” Last Friday, September 7, the Beard family dedicated the Beard Bell at Atrium Health and began their new journey helping others, inspiring them to not give up. Hope is a precious gift. Thanks to his family, Howard Beard will inspire others with the gift of hope for years to come.
