NC BeachBlast Festival starts Friday Water! Sun! Music!

Fun! The Carolina Beach Music Award winning NC BeachBlast Festival is back!

The City of Kings Mountain will bring the Beach to downtown as the NC BeachBlast Festival, presented by Carolina Power Partners, comes back to Patriots Park, Friday, August 20 and Saturday, August 21.

The festival will kick off Friday, August 20 at 6:00 pm with DJ Eric Bowman followed by the Swingin’ Medallions taking the stage at 7:00 pm.

Beginning at 10:00 am August 21st, beach music fans can enjoy a full day of food, music, and fun with DJ Johnny B and four of the hottest bands in the South; The Embers featuring Craig Woolard, The Tonez, Band of Oz, and Blackwater Rhythm and Blues Band.

Come Hungry! Vendors will be on hand of-

fering great food. Shop till you drop at the Boardwalk Vendor Market with over 50 vendors onsite.

Did we say fun? Patriots Park will be filled with many activities for the whole family. Inflatables and games, the Rotary Splash Pad, continuous rounds of Water Wars, Watermelon Eatin’, Hula Hoop contests, Tiny Tots and Teenie Bikini contest, Big Beach Ball Drop, and much more!

What would the beach be without a pavilion?

Look for some awesome amusement rides in the park this year. Can you say Ferris Wheel?

Students head back to the classroom Monday, August 23

By Loretta Cozart Cleveland County students begin the 20212022 school year on Monday, August 23. While the School Board has opted to let parents determine if students will wear masks at school, all students and adults must wear a mask on school buses.

According to Kings Mountain High Schools website, ALL students will eat breakfast and lunch for free during the 2021-2022 school year. If you want additional services, like free internet, additional P-EBT funds, cost waived for ACT, SAT, AP,

and other tests, or to have college application fees waived, parents must apply at https:// www.lunchapplication.com/.

KMHS offered laptop pick-up before school starts this year in the media center.

They encourage all rising 9thgrade students to come before school starts to get their new Chromebook and laptop case.

Cleveland Co. Schools offer online enrollment Cleveland County Schools announced their new online enrollment system April 9. Using their online enrollment system, you can upload documents such as proof of residency, birth certificates, and immuniza-

tion records.

Swingin’ Medallions kicks-off the NC BeachBlast Festival Band will perform Friday, August 20 at Liberty Falls Amphitheatre The City of Kings Mountain welcomes legendary group, Swingin’ Medallions to kick-off the NC BeachBlast Festival presented by Carolina Power Partners, Friday, August 20.

Based in Greenwood South Carolina, Swingin’ Medallions was founded in 1962. In 1966, the group hit #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts with “Double Shot (Of My Baby’s Love)”.

“This is the second visit to Kings Mountain for Swingin’ Medallions,” states drummer Robby Cox. “We can’t wait to get back to Kings Mountain.

Steffes, LLC expanding to Cleveland Co. Steffes, LLC of Dickinson, North Dakota, a leader in the development and production of innovative energy technology and advanced manufacturing has announced their decision to expand into the southeast through the acquisition of a manufacturing facility in the town of Shelby, North Carolina.

This investment of $20.9 million in Cleveland County will create 130 new, full-time jobs over the next five years. Start

of production is expected to begin in late 2021 with plans be fully operational in the first quarter of 2023.

McLendon Wade “Wendy” Smith Winstead KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – McLendon Wade “Wendy” Smith Winstead, 54, of Kings Mountain, NC, died suddenly from a heart attack on August 14, 2021 at her residence.

She was born in Charlotte, NC to Mary Wade O’Kelley Smith and Robert Lee “Bob” Smith, Jr. She was also preceded in death by her father Robert Lee “Bob” Smith, Jr. and sister, O’Kelley Smith Broadway.

She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and colleagues with whom she shared a zest for life and a love for others.

Wendy was spirited in all she did and achieved. Wendy graduated from Kings Mountain High School, earned an AA from Peace College in Raleigh, NC, a BS in Zoology from NC State University and a second BS in Psychology from UNC-Charlotte. She also received a MA in Human Behavior from Capella University.

Health care and counseling became her career, with a passion for helping others restore their lives and livelihoods in non-judgmental treatment and coaching environments. She believed that everyone deserved empathy and opportu-

nities to be understood. Most recently she was Director of Bay Mark Health Treatment Center in Murphy, NC and had prior roles with MedMark Treatment Centers, Clarendon Behavioral Health Services, McLeod Addictive Disease Center and Hope Haven. She operated Second Chances Counseling in her hometown for twelve years. She was also interested in Genealogy and had an affinity for cooking.

She is survived by herhusband: Michael Lynn Winstead, Kings Mountain, NC; daughter Anderson Walker “Andie” Winstead, Kings Mountain, NC; mother: Mary Wade O’Kelley Smith, Kings Mountain, NC; brother: Robert L. Escapee captured Foothills Correctional Institution minimum custody offender John Curtis Anderson (#1338690), who escaped Thursday morning by climbing a fence at the minimum custody portion of the facility and running away, was captured Thursday afternoon in a wooded area approximately three miles from the prison in Morganton.

Anderson was captured in the woods at approximately 4:43 p.m. after a coordinated effort by the Morganton Department of Public Safety, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety K9 unit and prison officials.

Originally from Cleveland County, Anderson, 42, was admitted to prison on

July 9 to serve a sentence of two years and 10 months for identify theft and fraud.

He was scheduled for release on Jan. 16, 2022.

Anderson has been moved to a higher custody facility and will face charges for his escape.

JULY 30: Officer McKinney said Joseph Bridges, Shelby, operating a 2016 ISU, turned left at the railroad crossing at Cherokee and Battleground, the trailer got hung on a cement pole and the vehicle was struck by a Norfolk Southern Train.

Property damage was estimated at $25,000 to the vehicle, $10,000 damage to the crossing signal and arms, Charlotte, and $5,000 to the concrete planter and barriers owned by the City of Kings Mountain. No injuries were reported.

AUG. 2: Officer Bullins said Pradupchay Bannouvong, 143 Rollingbrook Road, Trailer I, operating a 2014 Nissan, was merging onto US 74, and hit a 2018 Toyota operated by Ashlyn McDaniel, Gastonia, operating a 2018 Toyota. Property damage was estimated at $1,500.

AUG. 3: Officer Butler said Gerald Byers, 704 Katherine Avenue, operating a 1995 Honda, reported that his foot slipped off the brake at the stoplight at US 74 Business and Phifer Road and hit a 2015 Dodge operated by Brandi Torres, 104 Cenco

Drive, Property damages were estimated at $1,750.

AUG. 3: Officer Bullins charged Logan Cheek, Bessemer City, with DWI after Cheek, operating a 2015 GMC ran off the road on the US 74 Bypass and hit a US route sign. Gaston County EMS treated Cheek for minor injuries to his arm from glass.

Property damages were estimated at $2,500 to the vehicle and $250 damage to the sign.

AUG. 7: Officer Butler said Alexis Diaz-Garcia, Shelby, operating a 2016 Toyota, ran off the road on the US 74 Bypass and became trapped in his car and was freed by firemen. He was transported by EMS to Caromont Regional Hospital and then to Atrium in Charlotte.

Property damage was estimated at $15,000.

AUG. 7: Officer Butler said Jerry Christopher Wells, 1090 Dick Elam Road, operating a 2012 Ford, was exiting the parking lot of the NC 161 Car Wash, and pulled into the path of a 2010 GMC operated by Michelle Cox, 232 Scism Road. Cox complained of possible leg injury. Property damage was estimated at $8,500.

The NC BeachBlast Festival presented by Carolina Power Partners brings FREE family fun to downtown Kings Mountain, Saturday, August 21.

Inflatables, games, rides, and many other attractions will fill Patriots Park. For the first time in the history of the festival, free Ferris wheel rides will be offered as well.

Activities at the Patriots Park Gazebo will begin at 10:30 am. Dance Magic, Dance Reflections, Fitness Troopers and Step-N-Out Productions will perform.

Sigmon Theatrical will bring super cool fish Gil and Fin and Ollie the Octopus to the festival. Festival goers may see some mermaids as well. What would a festival be without contests? Registration for the Tiny Tots & Teenie Bikini, Watermelon, and Hula Hoop contests will begin promptly at 10:00 am.

Ross the Balloon Guy will be on hand creating fabulous balloon art. Free face painting and much more will make this a festival no one will forget.

ALWS luncheon hosted at Post 155

By Loretta Cozart Kings Mountain Post 155 hosted the American Legion World Series luncheon on Friday, August 13 at 11 am at the Otis D. Green Post home on East Gold Street. They fed over 200 attendees including eight teams and coaches, along with National American Legion officers, National volunteer staff, and local Legion members.

Seated at the head table were Post 155 Chaplain and Legion Rider John Braford, National American Legion Auxiliary President Nicole Clapp, former pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals Mitch Harris, Past Department of NC Commander Evan Thompson, Department of NC Commander Jim Quinlan, and American Legion Post 155 Commander Ken Breakfield.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 155 assisted in the dining room and member Kim Sexton provided desserts including a variety of different flavored cupcakes. Her two grandsons, Lucas (age 12) and Tyler (age 5) helped decorate them.

National ALA President Nicole Clapp commented that she had a choice between the MLB Field of Dreams Special game between the Yankees and White Sox held Friday evening in Dyersville, Iowa, or coming to the American Legion Baseball World Series.

She did not hesitate to come to Shelby for the ALWS. Keynote speaker was Mitch Harris, a Mt. Holly native, U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Navy veteran, former Legion baseball player, and an MLB player who has pitched for the St. Louis

Cardinals.

In his remarks, Harris told the gathering of 200 American Legion World Series participants, "When we die, there's going to be a tombstone or monument listing the day you were born and the day you died," Harris said. "For us veterans, we'll have a flag folded that is given to our next-ofkin.

"The 'dash' is the key and the difference. What are you doing during the time of that dash?”

He then shared what he wanted hi his "dash" to be.

"I don't want to be remembered as the guy from the Naval Academy that made the big leagues," he said. "I want to be the guy that encouraged people to do special things and to do things that people say you can't do."

Post 82 seeks to hire new American Legion baseball staff For the first time in the past 30 years, Post 82 is looking to hire a new coaching staff.

Victor Darville, Post 82 Commander, has appointed a Baseball Committee to seek resumes from the public interested in serving as a head coach for the Cleveland County Baseball program. Mike Grayson served as head coach for 30 years. For 25 years, Doug Gold served as the volunteer Post 82 Athletic Officer, and during the past few years, Hal Hastings held that title.

The new Committee will oversee both the Post 82 baseball and softball programs.

They hope to expand their Junior Legion Baseball program.

The Committee's task will be to recommend a new head baseball coach and provide direction as the new coach appoints assistant coaches. The head coach and assistant coaches will receive a small stipend.

The task of sponsoring a program is a bit more complicated than when Grayson took over the program. The coaching staff is mandated by national rules to undergo background checks and complete "Safe Sports" online classes and concussion training.

Any candidate interested

will receive a copy of the American Legion coach ethics document in advance. Commander Darville explained that The American Legion head coach would have a considerable impact on these young players' lives, and Post 82 will work hard to ensure that this impact will be a positive experience.

The Committee plans to interview candidates the Week of September 6 - 10. Interested candidates should submit a resume to American Legion Post 82 and mail it to Post Office Box 82, Shelby, NC 28150.

When the fall 2021 semester starts in late August, Gaston College will be sporting a new look. The College will reveal their new branding, including a new logo, colors, mascot, and tagline, on Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Gaston College Block Party.

The first Christians “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and TO FELLOWSHIP” (Acts 2:42). Notice the way Luke, the human author of Acts, put these words in context.

Do you see the context?

We like those early believers must contend with corruption. We desperately need the support, guidance, encouragement of fellow

believers to live free from sin’s entanglements. You will not get that in your pajamas, in your bed, drinking your coffee, listening to the sermon on your mobile device or smart television.

Let me hasten to add, the fellowship is not all for your benefit. As a believer in Jesus Christ, you are part of a family of believers.

You don’t just take from family members, you give!

You need the fellowship of brothers and sisters in Christ, and you have brothers and sisters in Christ that need you.

In truth, it is not enough to just get out of your paja-

mas and put on your Sunday clothes and attend a church service. You must make the effort to connect with people in the church. It’s risky.

Not everyone will welcome you. Not everyone will bless you. But you’re not there only for a blessing, you are there to be a blessing. And a strange thing happens when a believer reaches out to other believers, they end up blessed.

Sunday is just a few days away. There is a pew ready for you. There is a corruption to be guarded against.

Devote yourself to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship.

Anne of Green Gables playing at Cherryville Little Theatre Anne of Green Gables is coming Aug. 20, to Cherryville Little Theatre.

Actress and CLT member Sarah Fox Sandoval noted in a recent media release that performances for “Anne of Green Gables” at Cherryville Little Theatre will open Friday, Aug. 20.

Said Sandoval, “After more than a year of no in-person theatre due to COVID-19 we are excited to open our doors again!”

Sandoval said “Anne” is the classic tale of a plucky girl who touches the lives of everyone she meets in 1905era Prince Edward Island, Canada.

The play is written by Jody Johnston Davidson and is produced by special arrangement from Pioneer Drama Service, Inc., of Denver Colorado. It is directed

by Jim Chandler.

F.R. Summers home added to National Register

By Loretta Cozart On April 26, David Stone posted that the F.R. Summers House had been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

In a certificate, State of North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources Office of Archives and History certified that the Frank Rickert Summers house in Kings Mountain vicinity had been entered in The National Register of Historic Places by the Department of the Interior.

The National Register lists properties “significant in American history, architecture, archeology, and culture.” It is a comprehensive index of the significant physical evidence of our national patrimony.

The application for consideration describes the property this way, “The 1928 Frank Rickert Summers House is an outstanding example of the Tudor-Revival style located at 1220 North Piedmont Avenue just north of the Kings Mountain city limits. Designed by regional architect Hugh Edward White, the two-story dwelling is of wood frame construction with a stretcher bond brick

TOO EASY PEACH PIE Lillian Greene 5 to 6 peaches and sliced 1 ½ cup sugar 2 Tbsp. flour 1 egg 1 stick margarine 5 sticks white bread Preheat oven to 350 degrees Place. peaches in bottom of buttered baking dish. Cut crust from bread.

Cut each slice into 5 finger slices. Place the bread fingers over the fruit. In a bowl, mix beaten egg, sugar, flour, and melted margarine. Pour over fruit and bread. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.

HURRY PIE Betty Greene 9 oz. Cool Whip 1 tall can crushed pineapple juice, drained

1 can Eagle Brand milk 2 lemons just the juice, 4 Tbsp.

1 can coconut 2 graham cracker pie shells Nuts on top, if desired Mix pineapple and lemon juice, then Eagle Brand milk, then coconut. Add Cool Whip last. Put in pie shell. Put nuts on top, if desired.

POUND CAKE Bertha Blalock 2 sticks margarine ½ c. Crisco 3 c. sugar 5 large eggs 1 c. self-rising flour 2 ½ c. plain flour 1 c. sweet milk or 1 small can Pet milk and finish out with water to make 1 c.

1 tsp. lemon flavoring 1 tsp. almond flavoring Cream margarine, Crisco and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time after flour and milk. Add flavorings Bake 1. hour and 20 minutes at 325 degrees.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY Make sure your children know the rules Everyday millions of students use school buses as transportation to and from SHERIFF NORMAN school. Although school buses represent the safest form of highway transportation, there are a many safety factors of which both student and drivers should be aware. Hoping to ensure school bus safety, Sheriff Alan Norman encourages caution whenever school buses are present.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in recent years there were an average of 128 fatalities in school transportation-related traffic crashes each year and more school-aged pedestrians have been killed during the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. than any other time of day.

“Children are often eager to get off the school bus because they are excited to tell their parents about all of the fun, they had at school that day,” said Sheriff Norman.

“It is crucial that parents re-enforce the school bus safety rules children learn at school.”

Sheriff Norman also suggests that parents drive their child’s bus route with them to practice the proper safety precautions they can take to help ensure their child enjoys a safe ride to and from school.

Sheriff Norman encourages all parents to discuss the following safety mea-

sures with their children: Students • Always arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.

• While the bus is approaching make sure to stand at least three giant steps away from the curb, wait until the bus has come to a complete stop, the door opens, and the bus driver says that it’s OK to board.

• Always walk on the sidewalk when preparing to cross the street near a bus. Make eye contact with the driver so that you are sure he or she sees you.

• Never walk behind the bus.

• If you are walking beside the bus, walk at least three giant steps away.

• Use the handrail when entering and exiting the bus. Take extra precautions to make sure that clothing with drawstrings and book bags do not get caught in the handrail or door.

• Never stop to pick something up that you have dropped when a bus is stopped. Tell the bus driver or wait until the bus has driven off to avoid not being seen by the driver.

Motorists • Remember that children are unpredictable in their actions. Take extreme caution when traveling in a school zone.

• If there are no sidewalks, drive cautiously. Be more alert to the possibility of children walking in the road.

• Slow down and prepare to stop whenever you see yellow school bus lights flashing.

• Never pass a school bus when there are flash-

Need tech support? Be careful which number you call Many people are savvy enough to know that tech support scammers often reach out to potential victims by phone or with a popup. Even if the person takes a few minutes to look online for a number to reach popular streaming services and online shopping services such as Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon, Roku, or another type of online service for help,

BBB advises to use caution.

Scammers will post fake customer support numbers online to fool callers into purchasing unrelated computer software or use a convincing script to remote access a device to cause all kinds of technical issues the user didn't need. Unfortunately, many large companies have been affected by this scam.

How the Scam Works: Your laptop or mobile device is acting up or a streaming service is freez-

ing repeatedly. A quick search online reveals the customer support phone number, typically a toll-free number (1-888 or 1-844 number). Once dialed, a representative answers and with a few pieces of information provided, the representative declares that the account is compromised.

Skeptical? The representative reassures that they can provide proof that the account was hacked; however, they first need remote access to your device. By

this time, the desire to get the account recovered and information back could be overshadowing the decision to allow a stranger to remote access your personal computer or mobile device.

Scam artists often will install malware that records passwords, keystrokes, or other files that contain personal information. According to BBB Scam Tracker reports, this scam is often used as a setup for selling expensive computer security software, costing

victims between $200 and $900. Unfortunately, it does nothing to fix things that were never hacked in the first place.

Protect yourself from tech support scams: • Refer to contact information listed directly on the business's website, instead of relying on an internet search for support phone numbers (double check the URL) or use the phone number from the most recent latest bill.

• Never allow a stranger

remote access to the computer or mobile device if it has nothing to do with the reason you are calling technical support.

• Avoid clicking on popup boxes or ads stating that something is wrong.

If a popup doesn't seem to 'go away,' or is difficult to avoid, disconnect from the internet and wi-fi by shutting off the device immediately and restart it.

• Install virus protection on your computer.

FDA authorizes additional vaccine dose for some immunocompromised individuals L a s t Thursday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration amended the emergency use authorizations (EUAs) for both the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine and the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine to allow for the use of an additional dose in certain immunocompromised individuals, specifically, solid organ transplant recipients or those who are diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is scheduled to meet Friday to discuss further clinical rec-

ommendations regarding immunocompromised individuals. Today’s action does not apply to people who are not immunocompromised.

“The country has entered yet another wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the FDA is especially cognizant that immunocompromised people are particularly at risk for severe disease.

After a thorough review of the available data, the FDA determined that this small, vulnerable group may benefit from a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna Vaccines,” said Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, M.D. “Today’s action allows doctors to boost immunity in certain immunocompromised individuals who need extra protection from COVID-19. As we’ve

previously stated, other individuals who are fully vaccinated are adequately protected and do not need an additional dose of COVID19 vaccine at this time. The FDA is actively engaged in a science-based, rigorous process with our federal partners to consider whether an additional dose may be needed in the future.”

People who are immunocompromised in a manner like those who have undergone solid organ transplantation have a reduced ability to fight infections and other diseases, and they are especially vulnerable to infections, including COVID-19. The FDA evaluated information on the use of a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna Vaccines in these individuals and determined that

the administration of third vaccine doses may increase protection in this population.

These patients should be counseled to maintain physical precautions to help prevent COVID-19. In addition, close contacts of immunocompromised persons should get vaccinated, as appropriate for their health status, to provide increased protection to their loved ones.

It is recommended that immunocompromised individuals discuss monoclonal antibody treatment options with their health care provider should they contract or be exposed to COVID-19. The FDA has authorized monoclonal antibody treatments for emergency use during this public health emergency for adults and pediatric patients (ages

12 and older weighing at least 40 kilograms or about 88 pounds) with positive results of direct SARS-CoV-2 viral testing, and who are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID-19 and/ or hospitalization. One authorized product includes use for preventative treatment after being exposed to SARS-CoV-2; however, this product is not a substitute for vaccination.

The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine is currently authorized for emergency use in individuals ages 12 and older, and the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine is authorized for emergency use in individuals ages 18 and older. Both vaccines are administered as a series of two shots: the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine is ad-

ministered three weeks apart, and the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine is administered one month apart. The authorizations for these vaccines have been amended to allow for an additional, or third, dose to be administered at least 28 days following the two-dose regimen of the same vaccine to individuals 18 years of age or older (ages 12 or older for Pfizer-BioNTech) who have undergone solid organ transplantation, or who are diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise.

The EUA amendments for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine and the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine were issued to Pfizer Inc. and ModernaTX Inc., respectively.

How to Choose an Adult Day Care Services Provider Dear Savvy Senior, Can you offer any tips on choosing a good adult day care provider for an elderly parent? My 81-year-old father, who just moved in with me, has dementia and needs attention during the day while I’m at work.

Need Assistance Dear Need, Adult day care services can be a great option for caregivers who work, or for those who just need a break during the day. Here’s what you should know, along with some tips to help you find and choose one.

Adult Day Care The business of adult day care services has grown rapidly in recent years. According to the National Adult Day Services Association, there are upwards of 4,600 adult day centers across the U.S., the result of a 35 percent increase since 2002. Those centers provide services to more than 260,000 participants and family caregivers, which is a whopping 63 percent increase over the last two decades.

As the name implies, adult day care provides care for elderly seniors who cannot care for themselves at home. While

services will vary from center to center, they typically provide personal care, meals and snacks, various activities and social interaction in a safe supportive environment. Additionally, many centers also provide health services such as medication management, various therapies, exercise and transportation to and from the facility.

Adult day care centers generally operate programs during normal business hours five days a week. However, some centers may offer services in the evenings and on weekends, too.

Costs for care will vary as well, usually between $25 to more than $100 per day (the national average is $75/day), depending on where you live.

Unfortunately, in most cases original Medicare does not pay for adult day care, but some Medicare Advantage plans, and many long-term care insurance policies do. But most seniors or their families pay for care out-of-pocket.

If your dad is lower income and can’t afford this, state Medicaid programs provide financial assistance if he meets eligibility requirements, and some states have PACE programs that provide finan-

cial aid. Contact your state Medicaid office (see Medicaid.gov) for more information. The VA even provides adult day care to eligible veterans enrolled in their Medical Benefits Package. See VA.gov/ geriatrics to learn more.

How to Choose Your first step in shopping for an adult day center is to determine the kinds of services your dad needs, and you need as a caregiver. After you do that, here are some tips to help you locate and choose a good provider.

Start by contacting your Area Agency on Aging (call 800-677-1116 to get your local number) to get referrals to adult day service programs in your area. You can also search the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) database at NADSA.org/locator.

Once you have a list of a few centers, call them to find out their eligibility criteria, if they offer the types of services your dad needs, if they are accepting new clients, their hours of operation, if they’re licensed and/or registered with a state agency (this is not required in all states) and what they charge.

After you identify a few good centers, go in for a visit. Find out about the staffing

ratio (at least one staff member for every six participants is recommended) and what kind of training they have. While you’re there, notice the cleanness and smell of the facility. Is it homey and inviting? Does the staff seem friendly and knowledgeable? Also be sure to taste the food and consider making an unannounced visit.

To help you rate your visit, the NADSA offers a helpful checklist of questions to ask at NADSA.org – click on “Site Visit Checklist” under the “For Caregivers” tab.

Then, after your visit, be sure to check their references. Get names and phone numbers of at least two or three families who have used the center you are considering and call them.

It’s an exciting time and a dangerous one. Concerned with this safety issue, Sheriff Alan Norman of Cleveland County urges college students to exercise caution when living on campus.

Across the United States college campuses are increasing security measures by installing emergency call box systems designed to immediately contact a 911 operator. This program recruits qualified volunteers to walk students to and from class after dark. Security cameras and bright lighting are

“College campuses are extremely vulnerable to crime because of their openness,” said Sheriff Norman. “It’s difficult to keep buildings and dorm rooms locked because people are constantly coming and going. Another contributing factor is that students tend to develop a false sense of security because of the seemingly peaceful surroundings.”

Campus crimes can take many forms – theft, date rape, and drugs to name just a few. It’s impossible to avoid all dangers. However, Sheriff Norman has some suggestions on how college students can better protect and educate themselves through campus safety education.

• Never post information as to your whereabouts on your dorm room door, or on social media. If an intruder knows that you are away – it’s an open invitation for them to break in.

• Even if leaving your room for only a few minutes – lock your door.

• When studying in outof-the way places, inform campus security as to your whereabouts.

Mountaineers inexperienced but hope to be ready for Big South competition For the past several seasons Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers just reloaded each fall and were always in the running for conference championships and deep playoff runs.

But losing well over 20 outstanding senior players from the spring ’21 team, the Mountaineers will begin the fall season in a rebuilding mode. Hopefully, a tough three-game non-conference schedule against some of the top teams in Western North Carolina will give Coach Greg Lloyd’s young Mountaineer eleven the experience it needs to compete in the Big South Conference and the post-season.

The Mountaineers open Friday night at John Gamble Stadium against their oldest and toughest rival, Shelby.

After that they face two other Western powers on the road, Asheville and Burns.

“We lost a lot of good athletes” off of last year’s team, Lloyd noted. At least 10 of them will be playing on the collegiate level.

Lloyd does have some returning starters and others that saw playing time last year, and he looks for some of last year’s JV players to fill important roles.

Isaiah Eskridge and Tykel Smith return to the interior line along with Peyton Fisher at wide receiver. Deandre Hoyle started as a receiver on offense and corner on defense.

KM’s only returning starter in the backfield is

junior Caleb Holland, who came up from the JV team to lead the Mountaineers in rushing after Rashaard Brooks was injured. Brooks is still recuperating and if he plays at all this year it will be late in the season.

Sel Randolph, who was a key reserve last year, and Zay Smith, who excelled at the JV level, will see a lot of action at the slot. Jake Lloyd, a returning starter on defense, and Bryson Brown will be at wide receiver.

Robert Kendrick, who had a good season in the secondary as a varsity freshman, and Smith will also see time at running back.

Up front, Alex Jackson and Dalton Smith will move into starting guard spots, and Michael Lubas will take over the center position.

The Mountaineers lost one of their leading passers ever, Ethan Reid, who is now at Appalachian State. During the early-going, the Mountaineers will have Jonah Patrick and Lamont Littlejohn splitting time at quarterback.

Patrick was back-up to Reid last season and Littlejohn quarterbacked the JVs to an unbeaten season.

“On offense, I think we have a decent chance to be good,” Lloyd noted. “We’re just young. There’s not a lot of seniors on this team. I like our spread. It will take some games to develop but I think we will be pretty good.”

Defensively, the Mountaineers lost several starters including two of their all-

time best, Javari Rice-Wilson at defensive end and DayDay Wilson at linebacker. They are now in the major college ranks.

But junior AJ Richardson, who was also one of the team’s top tacklers, returns at linebacker along with Jake Lloyd at safety and Deandre Hoyle at corner.

Alex Jackson, a part-time starter last year, will start on the defensive line and Peyton Fisher also returns to the defense.

Lloyd looks to Michael Ward and Jacaylen Sanders to start at linebacker. Tykel Smith and Zaylon Ramos return to the defensive line.

Bryson Brown looks good at corner and Chase Ellis, a senior, will play a lot on the defensive line.

KM’s kicking game should be strong as Jaden Ellis returns as the place kicker. Fisher will probably do the punting, and freshman Max Thompson is also a talented kicker. Randolph and Lloyd will return punts and Kendrick and Smith will return kicks.

While many schools are reporting low numbers, Lloyd is pleased that the Mountaineers had 76 people show up for opening day of practice.

“I believe Shelby, Burns and Crest had about the same so all four Cleveland County teams should be good,” he said. “I am glad we will be able to field a JV team. A lot of schools won’t be able to do that.”

“We have a hard-working group of players. We’re young, so the good thing is that we will have 80 percent of them for two or three more years. We can grow together and hopefully have a good year this year and be very

good the following years.”

He knows challenging for the Big South title is a tall order, but he’s ready to give it a shot.

“The Big South Conference is super competition,” he said. “And South Point coming back in is going to make it even stronger. They have most of their players returning from last year so they could be the favorite.

“I am glad the conference is up to eight teams. I’m not sure if anyone will be able to run the table. Crest will be good. They may be a little young, too, but they have a lot of people back on defense.

“I think Ashbrook and Forestview will be pretty good, too. They have a lot

back so you know they will be much better than they were in the spring. I really don’t know that much about the other teams. I think Huss will be very young and I believe North Gaston will be improved in the second season under their new coach, Justin Clark. Cramer could be very good. Their number 7 (Arias Nash) is a very good defensive end, and their quarterback (Justin Rocquemore) is a very good passer.

“It’s going to be an interesting year. We’re not settled on a starting quarterback yet.

We’re going to play them both starting out because they did a good job over the summer.”

Junior AJ Richardson returns as a third-year starter at middle linebacker for the Mountaineers Friday when Shelby’s Lions come to Gamble Stadium. The 235-pounder will also see some time at fullback.

Lady Mountaineers hope to take volleyball program to the next level was last year.

“We’re going to be very competitive, for sure,” Pasour says. “Our goal is to go further in the state playoffs. That’s going to be our focus as well as finishing first in the conference.”

Pasour says she has the players for several rota-

tions. One major change up front will be that Byers, who is starting for the fourth year in a row, is moving to the outside hitter spot.

“Defensively, we’re going to be alright,” Pasour noted “Myracle Davis played

the middle last year and is looking good,” Pasour noted. “And with Songaila being even better than she was last year, we have a lot of big hitters.”

Other returning starters include senior outside hitter Lily Gold and junior setter Paige Bagwell.

Others who saw action last year and/or stood out on the JV team include Caroline Barber, Jacie Jarvis, Mary Quay Moss, Jessie Ozmore, and Mary Grace Hogue.

To put it bluntly, Kings Mountain High’s women’s volleyball team wore out the Big South 3A Conference competition last season.

But, they were taken down in the first round of the state 3A playoffs by a very strong Marvin Ridge team.

Veteran coach Heather Pasour and her returning players don’t intend for that to happen again. They not only expect to win the BSC but go deep in the state 3A playoffs.

“We’ve scheduled a lot of harder competition to help us prepare for the state playoffs this year,” Coach Pasour notes. “People like Audrey Kell and Weddington and other 4A and strong 3A teams that will give us a big test so we will be better prepared for the state playoffs.”

The Lady Mountaineers lose only two starters from last year’s team, Emma Goff and Kyann Crocker.

Substitute Riley Carroll also graduated.

Coach Pasour has two of the best players, not just in the Big South Conference but in the entire state, in senior Aaliyah Byers and sophomore Meile Songaila.

Kings Mountain cross country runners look forward to an exciting ’21 season Kings Mountain High’s men’s and women’s cross country teams hope to be first division teams in the Big South 3A Conference this fall.

Veteran head coach Rayvis Key has several of his top runners back and feels certain his teams will be near the top of the standings.

If the past several years holds, the Mountaineers will have to come across the finish line ahead of Stuart Cramer and Forestview to be the conference champions.

And, thrown into the mix this year will be the South Point Red Raiders who are coming back into the conference after four years in 2A. While Coach Key knows very little about the Red Raiders, he is very familiar with Cramer and Forestview and knows his men and women will have to do their very best to finish ahead of those guys and gals.

If practice is any indication, the Mountaineers could give them a close race.

“Everything has been going pretty well,” Key noted. “We have a solid group. Our numbers are not high but we have good, solid runners.

“The future looks good, and for the girls for sure,” he said. “We’re returning four of our top five runners.

Returning starters should help KM soccer move up in Big South Conference standings With a more veteran team, second-year Kings Mountain High men’s soccer coach Dillon Richards expects his Mountaineers to move up the ladder in Big South Conference play.

The Mountaineers finished fifth last season but with a lot of returning players Coach Richards can already see in practice that they are much better.

“We haven’t had a lot of workouts, but we’re looking good,” he said.

“Our numbers are down so we won’t be having a JV team.

“We have a lot of returners. We graduated only five so we have eight or nine seniors back. We’re senior heavy so I’m looking forward to the season.”

He said Kohen Johnson and Dylan Platt have been impressive in practice. “They’re both in really good shape. I look for them to have a solid year.”

Coach Richards has a lot of younger players.

“We look for them to be good too.”

“We’re coming off a 3-8-1 overall record but we are much more experienced,” he noted. “I

Even though they lost some good players, he expects last year’s dominant teams Stuart Cramer and Forestview to be the favorites to win the conference.

“Forestview lost only one game last year but many of their players were seniors,” he noted.

“They’re always going to be good. They have a lot of juniors and seniors with experience.”

But the Mountaineers have some juniors and

seniors with experience, too, and he feels like they can move up the Big South ladder. Richards has scheduled six non-conference matches against tough opponents to get ready for the Big South race.

They were scheduled to host Shelby Monday at John Gamble Stadium and they travel to Enka Thursday. They have six non-conference games before opening Big South action Monday, Sept. 13 at Hunter Huss.

Hall of Fame Barbecue set August 20 at KMHS The annual Kings Mountain Sports Hall of Fame barbecue will be held Friday, August 20 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the lobby of B.N. Barnes Auditorium at Kings Mountain High School.

The cost is $10.

All proceeds go toward the Hall of Fame’s scholarship program which benefits students at Kings Mountain High.

Tickets can be purchased in advance from members

of the Hall of Fame committee. Unsold tickets will be available at the door.

At 7 p.m. that night, the Mountaineers’ football team will open its season against arch rival Shelby at John Gamble Stadium.

KMTD golf tourney raises $88,190 The Kings Mountain Touchdown Club golf tournament Friday at Kings Mountain Country Club raised a record $88,190 to support athletic programs at Kings Mountain High School.

KM women’s tennis team looks to serve up a winner With all six starters back from a team that finished third last season, Kings Mountain High’s tennis team looks to finish high in the Big South Conference this fall.

The conference will be tougher as South Point rejoins the league after four years in the 2A ranks. KM coach Rick Henderson points to Forestview as the team to beat because the Lady Jaguars return all six starters from last year’s Big South championship team.

Kings Mountain returns juniors Hannah McCall, Katelyn Fleming, Railey Bolt, Hailey McCall and sophomores Melissa Brooks and Katie Murray. Newcomers are senior Kalin Brooks and Tatyana Corso.

“Hannah, Hailey, Katelyn and Railey are coming

off a very successful season as all four earned their way into the West Regionals back in June,” Henderson noted. “Hannah, Katelyn and Railey were on the All Big South Conference team.

“I look for Hannah, Katelyn and Railey to battle for the number one seed.

As for the four and five seeds, I look for Hailey and Melissa to nail down those two positions. Both have improved during the off season but it’s too close to tell who will end up as the #4 seed once the season begins. Katie will continue to be our six seed simply because Kalin and Tatyana are newcomers to the game of tennis.

“After finishing last season in third place with an overall record of 4-2 in conference play, I was ex-

tremely proud of what our team accomplished and I look forward to even a better season this year.”

Henderson said all six of his returning players have improved their ground strokes and net play.

Henderson said South Point will make the Big South a stronger conference but he is confident his ladies can battle the Lady Raiders for second place.

“I’m hoping we can keep up the momentum from this previous season and give the Lady Red Raiders a run for second,” he said. “But my guess is that Forestview will repeat as conference champion.”

Henderson invites all KM tennis fans to support the Lady Mountaineers. All matches begin at 4 p.m.

Individual games with weeklong access is $10 per game. A season package for football is $50 for five months. The 11-month package includes football, soccer and basketball for $65.

Regardless of your purchase, the weekly coach’s show will be available based on the duration of your purchase.

“We are hoping with the 11-month package to stream other sports, but at this time we are looking for other announcers,” said KMTD Club president David Brinkley.

In the event of inclement weather, your access begins on Wednesday night and continues for seven days.

All home games are guaranteed at this time. All away games must be approved by the home team.

“We want to encourage everyone to please continue to attend our home games,” Brinkley said.

“The streaming has allowed us more exposure for our veterans, alumni in other cities, senior citizens and those unable to attend the games.”
