Robbery suspect arrested at Grover On Thursday police arrested a suspect who allegedly shot one person and stabbed three others in a robbery early Wednesday afternoon at the Smoke Shop at 112 York Road in Kings Mountain. While fleeing the scene, the suspect allegedly stole the business owner’s 2018 burgundy Toyota RAV4.

Ricky O’Daniel Smith, Jr., 19, was arrested in Grover and taken to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department. Smith faces charges of four counts of attempted murder, armed robbery, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen goods, and second-degree kidnapping.

The conditions of the four victims are unknown.

Early Thursday, the Kings Mountain issued an alert to citizens using the City’s Emergency Notification System. “Someone in Grover received the alert,” said Mayor Neisler.

“When they saw a burgundy RAV4, they notified the police. We are pleased our system played a key a role in the arrest.”

Firestone Fibers and Textiles Company invests $19 million KM facility Provided by Gaston Co. Economic Development Commission The Gaston County Economic Development Commission is pleased to announce that the Firestone Fibers & Textile Company, a manufacturer of technical textile fibers, is expanding their North American headquarters and advanced manufacturing plant located at 100 Firestone Lane in Kings Mountain by 110,000 square feet in size. Firestone Fibers & Textile Company established a Gastonia production operation in 1935.

It is one of the oldest existing factory operations in the County. The company intends to invest a total investment of $19.768 million in plant expansion and new machinery and equipment.

The company intends to create at least 25 new jobs.

Since 1992 the Kings Mountain facility has manufactured tire cord and

similar products. Firestone Fibers & Textiles has ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 registered plants located in Kings Mountain and Gastonia in North Carolina, USA, and Woodstock, Ontario, Canada. The Kings Mountain plant is 483,916 square feet in size not including the current expansion.

Mr. Chad Brown, Chairman of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners said: “This plant expansion is great news for Kings Mountain and Gaston County.” He further stated, “It is always gratifying when one of our community’s oldest operating industrial firms - Firestone Fibers & Textile Company continues to grow.” Chairman Brown added, “The Board of Commissioners appreciates Firestone Fibers & Textile Company’s investment and job creation.”

Gaynell Vivian Ruppe KINGS MOUNTAIN – Gaynelle Vivian Ruppe, 87, of Kings Mountain, passed away on July 12, 2018 at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.

She was born in Gaston County, NC, to the late Porter Ramsey and Jeanette Stone Ramsey. She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, George Thomas Ruppe, and a son, Jerry Ruppe.

Gaynelle was a dedicated member of Christian Freedom Baptist Church and formerly Macedonia Baptist Church, and loved every aspect of church life. She enjoyed cooking and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her son, Tony Ruppe and wife Teresa of Kings Mountain; grandchildren Kevin Green and wife Amy of Kings Mountain, Stephanie Ormond and husband Bobby of Mooresville, Heather Ruppe of Kings Mountain and Dustin “Dusty” Ruppe of Kings Mountain; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Monday, July 16, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Christian Freedom Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie Wilson officiating.

Visitation was Sunday, July 15, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain; and at other times at the home of the son in Kings Mountain.

Interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain.

Helen Humphries LEESVILLE, LA – Helen Doris Humphries, 88, of Leesville passed away peacefully on July 10, 2018 at Leesville, LA. She was born in York County, SC, to the late Marion and Ethel Martin Hannon. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Robert Humphries Sr., and one son, Douglas Ray Humphries. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and there sisters.

The funeral was held Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel. Interment was in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

A native of Cleveland County, he was born to the late Howard O’Grady and Ora D. Meyers Foster.

Robert C. “Bob” Pearson Robert C. (Bob) Pearson 90, of 218 Chateau Drive, Greenville South Carolina, died on July 15, 2018.

Born August 15, 1927 in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Robert L. Pearson and Thelma Wylie Pearson.

He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps having served in the Arctic on a weather station.

After leaving the Army Air Corps, he went back to the Arctic as a civilian and worked for the United States Weather Bureau for two years.

He was a graduate of the North Carolina State School of Engineering. In 1960, he was employed

by Milliken & Company Textiles until he retired in 1987.

He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Sybil Pearson. He is survived by two children, Belinda Daniels and husband, Herman of Williamston, North Carolina, and Robby Pearson and wife, Betsy of Easley South Carolina. He is also survived by one grandchild, Joseph Daniels of Greenville, North Carolina; and two step-grandchildren, Bill Daniels of Raleigh, North Carolina and Ben Daniels of Arlington Virginia. Surviving also are a brother, Bobby L. Pearson; three sisters, Juanita Jackson, Gertie Barnett of Kings Mountain and Gwen Newcomb and husband, Reverend Alvin Newcomb of Randleman, North Carolina.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday July 20th at 10:00 AM at Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain North Carolina.

Born in Surry County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Wood and Jeanetta Woodle Wood and was also preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Samuel G. Dudley, her son, Samuel Aaron Dudley, a grandchild, Samantha Dudley, seven brothers and six sisters.

The funeral was conducted by the Rev. Mike Chambers at 2 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2018 at Christian Freedom Baptist Church.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Record your moonwalk memories at the Senior Center July 20 Record your moonwalk memories at the Senior Center July 20th from 9:30 am – 10:30 am The Patrick Senior Center is partnering with the Mauney Memorial Library to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moonwalk next summer, July 2019. Women’s ministry ‘Thirsty Thursdays’ set July 28 in Shelby Robin Bamberg of Kings Mountain will take her Thirsty Thursday’s women’s ministry to the Cleveland County Library, 104 Howie Drive in Shelby, Saturday, July 28 at 10 a.m.

Donation Stations raise local funds at the market to buy top-quality fresh local food for people at risk for hunger in our community.

Market shoppers buy food from farmers and donate it, or donate cash and volunteers buy food. Farmers donate excess food at the end

of the market days, which ensures that nothing goes to waste. Home gardeners are encouraged to bring their excess produce as well. These donations are distributed to recipient organizations locally. Over 3,600 pounds of produce was collected and distributed during the 2017 season.

Let’s create a masterpiece

On Wednesday last week, four people in Kings MounLORETTA tain were COZART attacked at their place of business.

They went to work just as many of us do every day. While there, they all faced death. Thankfully, all survived.

I don’t know any of the people who were attacked, and yet my heart goes out to each of them. How are they? This information is hard to acquire due to HIPPA laws. It is a good thing, I guess. People deserve their privacy and it really isn’t my business, after all.

But, I do genuinely care how these folks are doing.

I have been thinking about them all week and keep them in my thoughts and

In a scene from the show, South Carolina militia Colonel James Williams talks about the tactics he and his men will use at the upcoming battle: Practicing our marksmanship under rapid movement, using trees and rocks for concealment and cover. This ain’t Europe, where you line up in neat rows and slaughter each other with musket volleys. In the backcountry, you move quiet and fast. Stealth and surprise. Like Indians, and that’s who we learned it from.

To understand how the backwoodsmen came to this form of warfare, you have to go back to 1763, when the English king signed a treaty with the

prayers. From the emails and calls I’ve received inquiring about them from the community, I’m sure I am not alone in my caring.

Kings Mountain is comprised of many wonderful people; people who care for each other and work hard to make our community better. Each person is an integral part of the fabric of this community.

Every time I read the Maya Angelou quote, “I believe in living a poetic life, an art full life. Everything we do from the way we raise our children to the way we welcome our friends is part of a large canvas we are creating,” I think of the people of Kings Mountain.

While I may not know these folks personally, it is my hope that their friends will read this article and share the community’s concern with each of

them. I hope they are on the road to recovery. I hope they are getting the support they need to go beyond this experience and get any counseling they may need.

I can’t imagine enduring such a thing and certainly hope if I had to, I would survive it. I would hope my friends and family would help me through. And I would hope the community would rally around me to help me go beyond it… and thrive.

That is what we should want for each other.

If it is true that “Everything we do… is part of a large canvas we are creating,” the masterpiece that could result from the way we welcome these friends through our caring and concern will be a truly beautiful sight to see.

Cherokees who lived in western North Carolina (now eastern Tennessee).

The treaty gave the Indians all land on the western side of the Appalachians, and ordered white settlers to stay out. But as thousands of whites moved from Pennsylvania and the Carolinas, looking for land to build homes, farm and hunt, they began to encroach on Cherokee land. Conflict was inevitable.

The bloodiest of the conflicts began when 600 Cherokee warriors, outraged over the taking of their land, attacked the mountain settlements and homes – killing, burning and pillaging. The settlers fought back with a campaign that was just as bloody and ruthless.

They scattered the tribes, destroyed villages, and killed warriors. The Cherokees would never completely recover.

The settlers blamed much of the trouble on the British, who had been allies of the Cherokees in earlier times and who still supplied them with arms and ammunition they used in their bloody campaign.

If there was an upside to the conflict, it was in the war tactics the settlers learned from the Cherokees – the kind described

by Colonel Williams.

They learned to move through the forests stealthily, to use natural cover, to make every shot with their highly accurate long rifles count.

However, these dangers can be avoided if people choose to drink water. Consider today putting the sugary stuff to the side and make water the number one drink of choice. The benefits really are endless.

When Jesus started his earthly ministry, he called ordinary people like you and me away from their vocations and into a life of dedication and service to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. In Matthew 4:19, Jesus says to come and follow him and he will make us fishers of men.

Jesus never says to just believe in him and that is good enough to make us fishers of men.

Matthew 28:16-20 records the final words of Jesus’ earthly ministry and nowhere in there does he mention believing, studying or worshipping him in our comfortable sanctuaries and according to our self-centered lifestyles. In fact, Jesus chooses to close out his earthly

ministry with the command for us to go and teach others what we have learned throughout our journey of following him.

Romans 10:9 tells us that when we declare with our mouths that “Jesus is Lord” and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, then we are saved. Romans 10 also goes on to say that people will never know that truth unless we are sent to preach that good news. If you have been saved, you have been called to a lifetime of sharing the gospel with others. As Paul writes in Ephesians 2:10, we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. Will you join me today and go beyond believing in Jesus, but also following him into a life of service and good works?

Vacation Bible School will be held August 5-9 from 5-8 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 113 South Piedmont Avenue, Kings Mountain.

Classes will be held for ages three through rising seventh graders.

The theme is “The Parables and Pura Vida.”

Children will learn about

five parables of Jesus, alongside investigating the country of Costa Rica and the missions in which CUMC participates. All participating will learn through the avenues of music, art, storytelling, and worship.

KM Historical Museum summer fun!

“A FRESH LOOK” art competition and exhibit opens this week at Southern Arts Society in Kings Mountain. Artists are asked to show us their most recent work taking a fresh look at the world around them, from real life to their wildest imagination. The theme for this show is very open, so there is a wide variety in the subject matter, from landscapes to pet portraits and somethings out of this world.

Over eighty works of art have been entered in the show including paintings in all media – oil, acrylic, colored pencil and mixed media, along with photography and ceramics. Entries will be judged with cash prizes awarded. Artists from around the region will have their best work on display and for sale.

Also on view will be photographs from the “TRAIL” photo competition. The public was invited to submit photos taken on the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail for judging and cash prizes. Photographers captured the flora and fauna found on the trail in both color and black and white.

The public is invited to attend a reception for A FRESH LOOK and TRAIL on Saturday July 21 from 6 until 8 pm to meet the artists.

Presentation of awards will be at 7 pm. The exhibits are open to view now thru August 31.

Southern Arts Society (SASi) Gift Shop & Gallery is located at 301 N. Piedmont Ave. at the intersection of Piedmont and Battleground Avenues in the historic Southern Railway Depot. SASi offers a gift shop, ongoing exhibits and art competitions, programs and classes in a variety of media for artists of all levels.

STRAWBERRY SALAD Mrs. Mary E. Shaw 1 pkg. strawberry jello 1 cup chopped nuts 1 small can shredded pineapple 1 pkg. frozen strawberries (thawed) 1 container sour cream Divide first four ingredients mixture in half.

Spread with sour cream.

Pour second half over it and congeal.

SHONEY’S STRAWBERRY PIE Maynard Snow 3/4 cup sugar 2 Tbsp. cornstarch 1 cup water Dash salt 1/2 pkg. strawberry geltin (3 oz.)

9 inch pie crust, cooked 4 cups fresh strawberries Combine sugar, cornstarch and water. Bring to a boil. Cool. Stir in gelatin while cooking.

Fill baked pie shell with

fresh strawberries. Cover with cooked mixture and refrigerate. When cool and congealed cover with Cool Whip.

LIGHT AS A FEATHER GINGERBREAD Charlene Padgett Pour 1/2 cup boiling water over: 1/2 cup shortening Then add: 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup molasses 1 beaten egg 1-1/2 cups sifted flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 2 teaspoons ginger 1 teaspoon cinnamon Beat until smooth. Bake in a greased 8” square pan in 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. Cool in pan on rack.

1 box yellow cake mix (other flavors can be used) 1 stick butter 1 egg Mix this thoroughly and press into 9x13 pan, greased and floured.

TOPPING: 8 oz. cream cheese 1 box powdered sugar 2 eggs Beat this mixture until smooth and pour over bottom layer. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.

LEMON CHESS PIE Ozell Kiser Freeman 3 eggs, slightly beaten 1 cup sugar 1/2 stick melted margarine Juice of 1 lemon Mix these ingredients together and pour into an unbaked pie shell. Bake for 5 minutes at 425 degrees and reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake 25 minutes longer.

New members join CCC Board At Cleveland Community College, two members of the Board of Trustees have been reappointed and two new appointees have been named.

Chris Monroe and Dennis Bailey joined the board on July 10, and current members Wes Westmoreland and Wayne King began serving their second terms.

Monroe was appointed by the Cleveland County Board of Education. He is owner of Monroe Tire & Service in Shelby, where he has worked since 1987. He has a bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University and has served on several boards over the years, including the United Way, Cleveland County Arts Council, Shelby Presbyterian Church and the Tire Industry Association. He is also a past president of the Shelby Lions Club.

Currently, Monroe serves on the Cleveland County Chamber Board, the advisory board for the Small Business Center at Cleveland Community College, and on the NATEF Advisory Board for the Crest High School Auto-

motive Program. In addition, he serves as the director of the North Carolina Tire Dealers Association.

Dennis Bailey was appointed by the General Assembly. After graduating from Crest High School, Bailey joined the United States Air Force where he served for 20 years in various positions, completing his career as Directorate Superintendent.

During his career in the Air Force, Bailey lived in Texas, Illinois, Delaware, Italy, Virginia and Germany. When he retired in 2000, he returned to Shelby. He currently owns and operates Bailey Real Estate Advisors, LLC in Shelby.

Bailey has served as a Shelby City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tempore, and as vice-chairman of the Gaston-Cleveland-Lincoln Metropolitan Planning Organization, which is responsible for prioritizing transportation projects for the region. KM’s Logan Smith first female graduate in electrical engineering at The Citadel Logan Smith recently graduated The Citadel in Charleston, SC as the first woman with a mechanical engineering degree.

Now, she is returning to the school to work on her Masters and get in another year of volleyball.

The former Kings Mountain High star had to sit out her senior year with an injury, and even though she has graduated new Coach David Zeleneock offered her a scholarship which will allow her another year on the court and also help fund her additional schooling.

Smith tore her meniscus and sat out her senior year of volleyball to give it time to heal. She hadn’t planned on playing volleyball again until she realized both setters on this year’s team are freshmen.

“I approached Coach Zeleneock and told him I was available if he needed me,” Smith said. “I am more than excited about going back.

It’s almost like I’m getting a scholarship twice. I appreciate him giving me another year.”

Smith said the coach wasn’t fast to jump at her suggestion and she wondered if her volleyball career, which had lasted 11 years through middle school, club volleyball, high school and college was finally over.

“Eventually, he e-mailed me and asked if I was willing to come and talk to him,” Smith recalled. “He offered

Smith was home briefly last week but will soon be returning to school. But, for the first time as a Bulldog she will be living off campus and not participating in the rigorous military training.

Being the first lady to graduate The Citadel with a mechanical engineering degree is “super exciting,” she says. “There’s so much math and science involved. There are girls in classes below me, so each year there should be more completing it. And they (the school) are trying to recruit more. There were a lot of girls starting out but switched out. I just stuck with it. It’s a relatively new program.”

Playing sports while going through the rigors of military training is not always a good mix for female athletes,” Smith said, but she loved it.

As for volleyball, she sees it improving every year.

Smith said her junior year was her best. In a tournament game in Statesboro, GA against local rival Gardner-Webb, she tallied 67 assists (second most in program history) and 16 digs. She also had 141 assists over a four-game period, including 53 against Georgia Southern. She was named to the All-Tournament team.

In her three seasons she was sixth in program history with 1,231 total assists and seventh all-time with an average of 5.32 per game.

Another year will boost her totals.

“The chemistry was amazing,” she said about her three seasons. “We all clicked as a team. That was our best year together. The girls already on the team started to bond with the younger players. This is going to be a perfect year for the team. We have some fun things ahead of us.”

It will be a bit different for Smith, though, since she will be living off campus.

“This year I don’t have to do the whole Cadet program,” she noted. “I’ll basically be a college kid playing a sport and living off campus with no military training. Everything is regimented down there. You’re disciplined to the point that everything has to be perfect. It’s a very different structure than at other colleges.

“But I am absolutely glad that I went there. The military

Like most military institutions, students are not required to enter the military, she added. “A lot of girls don’t like having their hair cut, but it’s not like the guys.

They are cut bald. The girls have a little pixie cut.”

She looks forward to playing for Coach Zeleneock, who comes to The Citadel from East Tennessee State where he served as head coach.

“He is a very professional coach, exactly what we need,” she said. “He focuses on improvement. I know what he’s doing is bringing a different dynamic to the team. I am more than excited about going back. It’s almost

like I’m getting a scholarship twice. I appreciate him.”

Smith was a four-year starter at Kings Mountain High School where she helped lead the Lady Mountaineers to four consecutive South Mountain Athletic Conference championships.

She was All-Conference her junior and senior years.

“My biggest memory was winning the conference our senior year,” she said.

“We knew it would be a big change after that. Senior Night was so emotional, but in a great way. I had a great time there and wouldn’t change it for anything.”

After this season, her involvement with volleyball may end.

“I’ve been playing volleyball for 11 years,” she said.

“I’m kind of keeping my op-

tions open for the future, but more than likely I will want to design automobiles or airplanes.”

She doesn’t see coaching in her future.

“I was approached by a previous coach to coach a Mount Pleasant club team, but I don’t see myself coaching anything larger than that.”

She said her memories at The Citadel won’t be as much about winning and losing, but rather the relationships she built with other players “I was eating at a restaurant in Charleston and a girl came in that looked familiar,” she noted. “She was wearing a Citadel ring. Come to find out she played two years of volleyball there. Now we talk all the time.”

KM’s Pressley in East-West All-Star Game

Kings Mountain High’s Jerdon Pressley will play in tonight’s East-West All-Star football game in Greensboro.

Recent Kings Mountain High School graduate Jerdon Pressley will compete for the West all-stars in the annual East-West All-Star football game Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Bob Jamieson Stadium in Greensboro.

Pressley is the third KMHS player in the past two seasons to participate in the game. Darian McClain and Cooper Short played last July when Kings Mountain’s Greg Lloyd was head coach of the West team.

Pressley was a three-year starter on the defensive line for the Mountaineers and was a big key in the their undefeated run in the Big South 3A Conference. Kings Mountain was 7-0 in the BSC and 11-2 overall with both of their losses coming in overtime.

The East-West Game has been played every year since 1949. Coach Jameson, the Director of the North Carolina Coaches Association, received the keys to the stadium from the contractor at 4 p.m. on the day of the game.

Jamieson then went onto the field and coached the West team against another North Carolina legend, Wilmington’s Leon Brogden.

Through the years the game has featured hundreds of future NCAA Division I stars, many of whom went on to successful careers in the National Football League.

Over 3,400 North Carolina players have had the chance to wear the royul of the East and the scarlet of the West.

The game will feature a very entertaining halftime fireworks display.

Other Cleveland County players on the West roster are Max Cudd of Cret and Malik Surratt and Josh Smith of Shelby.

Shelby’s Lance Ware will be one of the West assistant coaches. Head coach of the West is Todd Willert of East Forsyth.

The game is played each year as one of the highlights of the annual North Carolina High School Coaches Clinic.

Touchdown Club seeking members for 2018-19 year Kings Mountain Touchdown Club is kicking off its annual membership drive and is looking for new members to join with returning members in making the overall Mountaineer athletic program one of the best in the state.

The school has won its conference Wells Fargo trophy for three of the past four years and is quickly becoming one of the top 3A programs in the state.

This is the 12th year of the Touchdown Club. Its success has not only made a big impact on the athletic program, but in the

facilities as well. The new Brinkley Field House, concession stand and weight room are some of the nicest in the state.

In fact, the recently renovated weight room which added $223,000 in state of the art weight equipment and a new roof, is the best high school weight room in the state according to the company that sold it.

Club president David Brinkley said the improvement in the KMHS facilities is the result of a lot of hard work and devotion of members of the Touchdown Club and other indi-

viduals and business and industries in the greater Kings Mountain area.

“We had a record setting golf tournament recently, raising over $61,000,” Brinley said. That is the club’s major fund-raising effort each year, but memberships also play a key role in the success of the organization.

The club will continue the same format of meetings, eating and reviewing of films as it did last year.

Meals are provided at no cost to the members, wives and guests (no children).

Dates will change slightly

this year to accommodate the football schedule.

Dixie Boys unbeaten in state tournament Kings Mountain’s Dixie Boys all-stars are undefeated after the first two rounds in the state tournament in Southport.

KM opened the tournament against North Granville County at 4:30 Saturday with a 13-0 victory with Lane Essary and Charlie Melton combining for a no-hitter.

Essary started on the mound and pitched two innings, striking out five

and walking three. Melton pitched the next two innings, facing only six batters and striking out five of them.

Things started slowly offensively for the KM team as the first inning saw only a single by Chris Ruffalo.

KM hit its stride in the second, however. Charlie Melton led off with a single to center and came around to score on a dou-

ble by Cole Irby. AJ Wylie walked and then hits by Essary, Zane Brockman, Ruffalo, Lane Jenkins and Melton’s second hit of the inning put the KM all-stars up 7-0.

The runs continued into the third when Wylie led off with a bunt single and scored on Essary’s triple.

Boone Cartee followed with an RBI single to push the score to 9-0 after three innings.

KM ended the game in the fourth inning on the mercy rule when Essary doubled to drive in Melton, Irby and Wylie.

KM’s second game was against Sampson County on Sunday. The KM allstars wasted little time, exploding for 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 15-0 win.

Essary got things started with a double, followed by a Cartee double.

Brockman singled to drive in Cartee and the rout was on.

Landon Jenkins, Devin Pressley, Chris Ruffalo and AJ Wylie all added hits in the first inning.

Charlie Melton led off the second inning with a single to left and later scored from third on a passed ball, pushing the score to 10-0 after two innings.

All-stars win #3 Will Spicer wins in state tournament first round match

Kings Mountain’s 13-14 year-old all-stars continued their winning ways in the state tournament Monday night in Southport, shutting out Bladen County 13-0 and was to take on Bladen County in a semi-final rematch Tuesday night at 7 o’clock.

The KM outfit is unbeaten and unscored on and closing in on a state championship and a berth in the World Series.

The KM bats remained hot Monday, putting up 13 runs in four innings while

the pitching remained lights out.

Zane Brockman pitched the first three innings, allowing only one hit and striking out three. Devin Pressley pitched the final inning, striking out three.

Chris Ruffalo had the big blow offensively, a three-run homer over the centerfield fence in the third inning. Lane Essary, Brockman and Jenkins had two hits each and Cartee, Woody, Ruffalo and Pressley also had hits.

It was a day of upsets in the first round of match play at the 22nd North Carolina Junior Boys’ 13 and Under Championship.

No. 16 seed Fisher Kennedy of Winston-Salem, defeated No. 1 seed Daniel Boone Jr. of Fuquay Varina, in 11 holes. No. 2 seed Taylor Kuehn of Asheville also went down by the hands of No. 15 seed Will Spicer of Kings Mountain by a score of 1 up in the championship

flight.

Kennedy and Spicer both had to earn their spots in the championship flight in a playoff that consisted of three players fighting for the last two spots. The two golfers both birdied the first playoff hole to claim their spots in the championship flight and took advantage of the opportunity.

Kevin Moran, 85, of Belmont says he thinks he’s unraveled the mystery surrounding the Shroud of Turin.

As many of you know, and the rest are about to find out, the Shroud is said by some to be the cloth that the body of Jesus was wrapped in after he was crucified in 30AD. The Shroud first showed up in 525A.D. in Edessa, then was moved to Constantinople where it was stored from 944-1204A.D. Next, the Shroud turned up in Lirey, France where it stayed from 1353-1357, was in a fire in 1532 in Chambery, France, and in 1587 landed in Turin, Italy where it is still housed in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

Physically, the Shroud is 3.5 ft. wide and 14.5 ft. long.

It’s made of a coarsely woven cloth. It bears the resemblance of a recumbent man and that’s where the debate begins.

Many scholars and historians say the man-image is Jesus, but just exactly how the “stains” on the Shroud that look like a human body got there and how they were formed has fueled conversation and controversy for centuries.

Enter Moran.

“I’ve studied the Shroud for over forty years,” he said.

“I think it’s the seal of the resurrection of Jesus.”

Moran, who attends Mass at Belmont Abbey, has an extensive background in technical matters. He is an engineer and has expertise in electrical, mechanical, and optical fields. He is an inventor, historian, and an absorber of knowledge on a grand and eclectic scale.

Moran says his interest in the Shroud goes back to his teen years in Chicago and a trip his mother made to hear a lecture about it.

“I was skeptical,” Moran said.

However, several years later the Shroud began to occupy more and more of his thoughts.

“I’ve been to Turin three times to see it,” he said. “It’s incredible.”

The engineer in Moran sought more knowledge on the Shroud.

“Engineers like to know how things work,” he said.

“I wanted to know how the image was formed.”

Moran knows not everyone will agree with his hypothesis, but here it is in a nutshell.

“It was a cosmic event,” he said. “Radiation from the body marked the cloth. Gravity bends light, but bending light from a body is another dimension. The body radiated onto the cloth. The image is not a painting, it’s a radiation image. It’s the only way to explain it.”

Moran’s home is in many ways a shrine to the Shroud.

Images of it appear in photographs and a large hologram.

He’s created a bust of Jesus in silicone. He built a 3D printer to make Shroud-related items like night lights.

He used his optics experience to make an inkjet scale replica of the Shroud. He has made a model of the body of Jesus as it would have appeared under the Shroud.

Folks from all over have come to Moran’s home to talk about the Shroud and see his work related to it.

“They’ve come from as far away as China,” he said.

“ABC-TV, church groups, and even the CIA came too.”

Despite all the science and study, Moran understands the Shroud’s key.

“Salvation is it’s big message,” he says.

North Carolina's oldest general store still going strong

If you want to see what a community dry goods and hardware store looked like 100 or more years ago, then you need to hop in your car and head for Washburn General Store near Bostic in Rutherford County.

Washburn General Store is the oldest, continuously operating, family owned, retail business in North Carolina.

It was first established in 1831 as a tavern on the Lincoln-Rutherford counties stagecoach line by Benjamin Washburn, and has been handed down through brothers and sons to his current owner greatgreat nephew Edward Nollie Washburn III. The National Department of the Interior inducted the General Store, the family mansion, a classic wooden barn built in 1915, and several other buildings as a historic district in 2002. The other structures include several rental houses, a funeral home, a 1915 powerhouse, and a pump house.

The Washburn family mansion-house located across the street from the store has a twin in Belmont, the Albert Hand House at 211 N. Main St., that was built in 1907.

In 1914, Nollie Washburn traveled to Belmont and bought a copy of the Hand House blueprints for two dollars. A Washburn ledger reveals that it cost $8,005 to build the house.

Materials for the massive Tuscan columns on the front porch cost $240. Slate for the roof set Washburn back $226 and maple flooring another $117.

The store's present location opened in the late 1920s. It's the fourth building the business has been in.

The Store’s original building actually stood on the other side of the Washburn’s Crossroads to its current home. It began as a tavern, inn, and mercan-

tile store that served stagecoaches traveling between Rutherford and Lincoln counties.

Today, Washburn General Store operates as a business, local hangout, and tourist attractionpretty much in that order.

Want some lunch at Washburn? Grab a can of beanie weenies or make your own sandwich from cold cuts and loaf bread. Grab a slice of hoop cheese. Wash down the eats with a cold, bottled Blenheim ginger ale or Cheerwine. As you partake of your Southern style plowman's lunch, let your eyes also feast on the multitudinous amount of old timey “stuff” available for sale at Washburn.

Need a new pair of overalls? Washburn sells Pointer brand in sizes small enough to fit a tot or big enough to serve as Omar's tent.

Other fascinating features of Washburn Store include a 3,800-pound safe, a reminder that Edgar Nollie Washburn was once president of the First State Bank of Bostic. Legend has it that during the Great Depression, Edgar went to the Federal Reserve in Charlotte and brought back two suitcases of cash to keep the bank open.

Store manager Casee Freshour explains the store's charm.

“They don't make stores like this any more,” she said. “It brings back memories for a lot of people.”

Washburn General Store has a broad following.

These fine ladies keep Washburn General Store running like a well-oiled machine. Jada Walker (light blue shirt), Casee Freshour (camo hat, store manager), Addie Harris (middle, black shirt), Ann Washburn Hutchins (Red shirt, she is Edward and Catherine's Daughter), Hannah Lowery (grey shirt).

“People have come to the store from as far away as Germany, Australia, Switzerland, and Peru,” Freshour said. “We have a log book where visitors can write their names and where they are from.”

Patriarch Edward Washburn, 88, still works at the store in the afternoon and enjoys his time there.

“I love talking to the people who stop by,” he said. “We plan to keep the store running for a long time.”

Washburn General Store is a great place stop by on your way to the mountains or Lake Lure. It's a short trip that will form long lasting memories.

Choosing an Executor for Your Will Dear Savvy Senior, What options can you recommend for finding a good executor for my will? At one time I thought one of my two kids could do it, but they are both financially inept and would probably make a mess of things.

Looking for Options Dear Looking, Choosing an executor – the person or institution you put in charge of administering your estate and carrying out your final wishes – is one of the most important decisions in preparing a will.

A good executor can help ensure the prompt, accurate distribution of your possessions with minimal problems. Some of the duties required include: filing court papers to start the probate process; managing your estate’s assets; using your estate’s funds to pay debts, taxes and bills; handling details like terminating credit cards, and notifying banks and government agencies like Social Security and the post office of the death; preparing and filing final income tax

returns; and distributing assets to the beneficiaries named in the will.

Given all the responsibility, the ideal candidate should be someone who is honest, dependable, well organized, good with paperwork and vigilant about meeting deadlines.

Who to Choose Most people think first of naming a family member, especially a spouse or child, as executor. If, however, you don’t have an obvious family member to choose, you may want to ask a trusted friend, but be sure to choose someone in good health or younger than you who will likely be around after you’re gone.

Also, if your executor of choice happens to live in another state, you’ll need to check your state’s law to see if it imposes any special requirements. Some states require an out-of-state executor to be a family member or a beneficiary, some require a bond to protect your heirs in case of mismanagement, and some require

the appointment of an in-state agent.

Also keep in mind that if the person you choose needs help settling your estate they can always call on an expert like an attorney or tax account to guide them through the process, with your estate picking up the cost.

If, however, you don’t have a friend or relative you feel comfortable with, you could name a third party executor like a bank, trust company or a professional who has experience dealing with estates. If you need help locating a pro, the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils (NAEPC.org) and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA.org) are great resources that provide directories on their websites to help you find someone.

Executor Fees Most family members and close friends, especially if they’re beneficiaries, serve for free because inherited money isn’t taxable.

But if you opt for a third party executor it will cost your estate.

Each state has laws that govern how an executor is paid – either based on a percentage of the estate, a flat fee or an hourly rate.

Get Approval Whoever you choose to serve as your executor, be sure you get their OK first before naming him or her in your will. And once you’ve made your choice, go over your financial details in your will with that person, and let him or her know where you keep all your important documents and financial information. This will make it easier on them after you’re gone.
