Liberty Mountain performances run through October 11 “Liberty Mountain, The Revolutionary Drama” started its annual run Friday night at the Joy Theatre. The drama, written by Robert Inman, tells the story of the Battle of Kings Mountain. According to director Jeremy Homesley, there are 40 actors, half local and the rest were recruited nationally, plus five technicians. Scenes come off the stage spilling into the aisles and around the stage along with simulated gun fire. “Our goal is for the drama to become a tradition in line with other dramas across the state,” Homesley said. Last year, 1,500 students attended a weekday performance. “I’m a teacher at Gaston College, I embrace the educational benefits of the show,” Homesley said. “We hope to top that this year.” The drama is open to homeschool groups as well as public schools. Pieces of Kings Mountain History

There was a time when a trip to the beauty shop meant more than just getting your LORETTA hair done. It COZART was where women caught up on the latest news, talked about their children and grandchildren, and spent a little time with friends before heading back to everyday life. For many Kings Mountain women, one of those places was Sudie’s Beauty Shop, operated by Sudie White Jenkins. William Hayne Neisler shared on a recent Facebook post on the Kings Mountain History page, “One of the most popular businesses in downtown Kings Mountain with the women in town was Sudie’s Beauty Shop. Sudie started her beauty parlor business here in Kings Mountain in 1935. Her first shop was located behind the blacksmith shop on Cherokee Street.” It is easy to imagine the activity along that street — customers coming and going, neighbors stopping to speak, deliveries being made and merchants knowing many of their customers by name. And right in the middle of it was Sudie’s Beauty Shop. Her shop sat in a lively little business district along Cherokee Street. In 1955– 56, The Hilltop confectionery was at 207 Cherokee, Roberts Barber Shop was at 209, and a blacksmith worked at 211. Phifer Hardware was at 212, with Ward Feed & Seed at 220 and Saunders Dry Cleaners at 222. By the mid-1950s, her shop promised customers “Personalized Beauty Ser-

vice.” The 1955–56 Kings Mountain City Directory identifies Sudie as the proprietor and lists the shop’s telephone number simply as 496. Neisler shared this info as well: “At her grand opening in 1960, she admitted to being ‘somewhere north of fifty years and proud of it.’ Today, three-digit telephone numbers seem almost as distant as party lines, but in 1950s Kings Mountain, calling 496 was all it took to make an appointment with Sudie. Sudie apparently had enough business that she did not work alone. The 1955–56 directory listed Mary I. Her business also moved during those years. The 1955–56 directory places the shop at 208 Cherokee Street. By 1964, Sudie’s Beauty Shop was listed at 218 Cherokee Street, with the more familiar seven-digit telephone number 739-5671. By 1961–62, Andrew Jenkins was listed as an operator at the Joy Theatre, while Sudie was still identified with Sudie’s Beauty Shop. In their own ways, both Sudie and Andrew worked in places where Kings Mountain residents went for a little escape from the everyday — Andrew at the movies and Sudie at the beauty shop. It was not a move across town. Sudie moved a short distance along the same street. Perhaps 218 offered a better space, room for more customers, or simply an opportunity that made sense for her business. The surviving records do not tell us why she moved, so that part of Sudie’s story remains for someone who remembers her shop to fill in. The records do tell us

that Sudie Jenkins was a working businesswoman in Kings Mountain at a time when many women were beginning to establish businesses of their own. And she put her own name on the door. By 1964, quite a few beauty shops served Kings Mountain — among them Helen’s Beauty Salon, Ila’s Beauty Shop, Modern Beauty Shop, and Winifred’s Beauty Shop. Yet there, among them, was Sudie’s Beauty Shop at 218 Cherokee Street. The name was simple, personal, and probably exactly what her customers called it anyway. Sudie’s. For those who sat in her chair, stories undoubtedly never made it into the Kings Mountain Herald or a city directory. First dates. weddings, new babies, graduations, illnesses and celebrations. Hairstyles changed, fashions changed, and Kings Mountain itself changed. But for years, Sudie kept opening the door. That is one of the things I enjoy most about looking through old Kings Mountain records. History isn’t always found in major events or the names of prominent people. Sometimes it is tucked away in an old city directory beside an address and a telephone number. In this case, those few lines introduce us to a Kings Mountain woman who built a business around something very personal — helping other women look and feel their best. And if you were looking for a little “Personalized Beauty Service” in Kings Mountain in the 1950s, all you had to remember was one name. Sudie’s.

God does not say there won’t be a battle He says the battle will not have control This distinction is imimagine hearing that? An portant. God didn’t say: army is coming. And God “There won’t be a batsays: “You don’t need to tle.” He said: “The battle fight.” Then He says: “Set is not yours.” There is a yourselves, stand ye still, difference. You may still and see the salvation of the have to walk through the LORD…” valley. But God controls Stand still. I know that is the valley. You may still difficult for us. Because we have to face the storm. like to do something. We BILLY HOUZE But God controls the like to fix things. We like Retired Pastor storm. You may still to answer people. We like to Lawndale have enemies. But God defend ourselves. We like to First Baptist Church get the last word. We would controls what your enemies can do. You may even like to prove that we still have questions. But God controls were right. And unfortunately, we the outcome. You may still have to like to make people regret what they wait. But God controls the timing. did. But sometimes God says: “Stand You don’t have to control every- still.” Not because nothing is happenthing because God controls the battle. ing. But because God is doing someGOD SAYS, “STAND STILL” thing you cannot see. Verse 17 says: “Ye shall not need STANDING STILL to fight in this battle…” Can you IS NOT WEAKNESS

Somebody has misunderstood what it means to stand still. Standing still doesn’t mean you’re weak. Standing still means you trust God’s strength more than your own. Standing still means: “I don’t have to retaliate.” Standing still means: “I don’t have to explain everything.” Standing still means: “I don’t have to respond to every accusation.” Standing still means: “I don’t have to fight everybody who fights me.” Standing still means: “God can defend me better than I can defend myself.” Psalm 46:10 says: “Be still and know that I am God.” Sometimes the greatest demonstration of faith is not what you do. It’s what you refuse to do. You refuse to panic. You refuse to retaliate.

You refuse to give up. You refuse to become bitter. You refuse to let the battle turn you into somebody God never intended you to become. THE THIRD PERSONAL CHALLENGE: WHAT ARE YOU STILL FIGHTING? Now let me ask you something personally. What battle are you still trying to fight? Who are you still trying to prove yourself to? Who are you still trying to get even with? What situation are you still trying to control? What conversation are you replaying? What offense are you carrying? What outcome are you trying to force? What are you losing sleep over? What have you told God you trust Him with—but you keep picking back up? What battle do you need to put back into God’s hands?

Because you cannot say: “The battle is God’s” and keep behaving as though everything depends on you. In closing: GOD’S CONTROL REQUIRES OUR SURRENDER Here is the hard part for us. God cannot control what you refuse to release. You want God to control the battle you’re in, but you keep holding onto the battle. You want God to control the outcome. But you keep trying to manipulate the outcome. You want God to control your adversaries, but you keep trying to get revenge. If you want God to control your future, you must not keep worrying about tomorrow. At some point you have to say: “Lord, I’m giving it to You.” Not: “I’m giving it to You, but…” Not: “I’m giving it to You unless…” Not: “I’m giving it to You until…” I’m giving it all to You.

Mountaineers roll over Forestview 55-6 After Forestview jumped out front early by returning the opening kickoff for a 6-0 lead, Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers returned the favor by returning the ensuing kickoff for a TD and then rolled to a 55-6 victory over the Jaguars on homecoming night Friday at Gamble Stadium. The Mountaineers countered the opening kickoff return by the Jaguars as Devin Hopper returned their kickoff for a TD. Cyrus Smith kicked the extra point and the rout was on. The Mountaineers went on to lead 28-6 after the first period and 35-6 at halftime. They tacked on two more scores in the third quarter and one in the fourth to take a 1-0 conference and 4-1 overall record into the second half of the regular season. Daeshawn Camp’s pass

interception and return to the Jaguars’ 10 yard line set up the second KM score, although it took a while to get it because of a lightning delay at the 10:15 mark of the first quarter. After returning to the field, Khareem Coleman scored from 10 yards out at the 10:03 mark and Cyrus Smith’s PAT made it 14-6. A punt return by Anijai Nash put the Mountaineers in business again at the Forestview 45. It took just two plays to score as freshman quarterback Jordan Jenkins hit Nazire Davis for a 22-yard gain to the 23 and then threw to Jemar Mack for the TD and a 21-6 lead at the 7:15 mark. Forestview couldn’t get anything going and had to punt from its own nine. KM took possession at the Jaguars’ 47. After a nineyard gain on first down by

Khareem Coleman, Jenkins kept the ball for two runs and scored from 32 yards out. Smith’s PAT made it 28-6. The Jaguars got off some good runs and also benefited from a pass interference penalty by the Mountaineers. They were able to get to the KM three-yard line before losing possession on an incomplete fourth down pass in the end zone. KM took just two plays, the second a Jenkins pass to Hopper for an 85-yard touchdown and a 35-6 lead at the 6:30 mark of the second period. The Mountaineers were in scoring position again after moving from their own 27 to the Forestview 18, but as Coleman was heading for a TD a Forestview player punched the ball out of the end zone at the 1:36 mark. Forestview took over on the 20 but

three plays later the first half ended. The Jaguars had to kick off to KM to begin the third quarter and it took just two receptions by Nazire Davis to make the score 41-6 and put the running clock rule into effect. The Mountaineers rolled 63 yards in just five plays to score on a 15-yard run by Camp and a 48-6

margin at the end of the third quarter. Kings Mountain tacked on its final score on a 45yard touchdown by Nazire Davis in the fourth quarter. All of the Mountaineers on both sides of the ball had good nights. Jenkins hit on 6 of 8 passes for 195 yards. Coleman had 105 yards rushing on just four carries. Hopper caught two

passes for 97 yards and Davis caught three for 76 yards in addition to rushing for 50. Kings Mountain will have an open date this week and will return to action on Friday, October 2 at North Gaston. Their next home game is October 9 against a good Gastonia Ashbrook team.

It’s been a tough season thus far for the Kings Mountain Men’s Soccer Team. Riding a fivegame losing streak, the Mountaineers came into their home match with North Gaston on Wednesday, September 16 hoping to turn things around. That’s exactly what they did! With Mathias Betanon scoring both goals for Kings Mountain, the Mountaineers defeated the North Gaston Wildcats by a score of 2-1. With the win, Kings Mountain improves to 2-10-1 on the year while North Gaston drops to 4-5. Hopefully, this will start a winning streak for the Kings Mountain club. Earlier in the week, on Monday, September 14, the Mountaineer squad welcomed the Hendersonville Bearcats to Kings Mountain for a non-conference matchup. Unfortunately, the Mounties came up short in a 3-0 loss to the Bearcats. For Hendersonville, they were led by Adam Schnitzer who had 2 goals in the match. Gavin Hensley also contributed a goal and an assist. In goalten-

Strong second half helps Runnin’ Bulldogs earn first win By Tony Venegas, GWU Assistant AD of Strategic Communication The Gardner-Webb football team made the most of its chance to play at home for the first time this season as the Runnin' Bulldogs pulled away for a 44-20 victory over North Carolina Central University on Saturday evening, September 19, at Spangler Stadium. Pete Bennett earned his first win as interim head coach at Gardner-Webb as they outscored NCCU 20-3 in the second half to cap off the victory. With Saturday's result, Gardner-Webb is now 1-3 on the season while North Carolina Central is now 2-2. The offense had a strong showing with 445 total yards

led by Cole Pennington, completing 24-of-38 passing for 309 yards and two touchdowns. Kory Jones was Pennington's top target with six catches for 131 yards while Randy Young led the ground attack with 92 yards on 16 carries and a score. Defensively, Tre Yanez continued his strong 2026 campaign leading the team with 12 tackles, including two for a loss and a sack. The Runnin' Bulldog defense finished with four sacks on the evening. Turnovers proved to be pivotal in the first quarter as Gardner-Webb moved the ball inside the five-yard on its opening drive but lost the ball on a fumble. After a Tyler Simpson field goal, the Run-

nin' Bulldogs got the ball back quickly thanks to a strip sack from A.J. Mebane that was recovered by Luke Gilbertson. Gardner-Webb capitalized thanks to a 1-yard touchdown run from Zalen Watkins to take a 10-0 lead into the second quarter. The Eagles' next possession resulted in a touchdown but the Runnin' Bulldogs answered with a 14yard touchdown from Randy Young. The Eagles rallied with 10 straight points to pull even at 17 but the Runnin' Bulldogs moved quickly and scored when Pennington found Sean Brady for a 30-yard touchdown with 21 seconds left to take a 24 to 17 lead at halftime. The second half saw Gard-

ner-Webb seize control of the game for good. After a North Carolina Central field goal in the early stages of the third quarter, the Runnin' Bulldogs responded again as Pennington found Joey Shearin for a 1-yard touchdown. Tyler Simpson added a pair of field goals in the second half and Gardner-Webb sealed the win with a 35-yard pick-six from Hunter West to seal the victory. It is the second straight game that the Runnin' Bulldogs have had a defensive score. Gardner-Webb wraps up nonconference play with a trip to Marshall next Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start from Huntington, West Virginia.

Smartphones Made Simple for Seniors Dear Savvy Senior, My 79-year-old mom just upgraded from a flip phone to a smartphone, but she’s having trouble figuring it out. Is there a way to make it easier for her to use? --Only Daughter

Dear Only, Switching from a flip phone to a smartphone can be a big adjustment. What seems second nature to younger users can feel overwhelming to someone who’s never used a touchscreen. Even though the screen is bigger, the text can still be tiny, the buttons hard to tap, and one accidental touch can open an app or change a setting. Even simple tasks like texting or taking a picture can suddenly feel frustrating.

The good news is that smartphones can be surprisingly senior-friendly. Both iPhones and Android phones have built-in accessibility features that make them easier to see, hear, and navigate. The exact steps vary depending on the phone, but here are some of the most helpful settings to look for. Apple iPhone If your mom has an Apple iPhone, start by opening the Settings app, then tap Display and Brightness. From there, she can make the text larger, turn on bold text, and use Display Zoom to make icons, buttons, and menus bigger. Even these small changes can make the phone much easier to use.

Accessibility offers several helpful tools. VoiceOver reads whatever is on the screen aloud, Zoom enlarges small text or photos, and Voice Control lets her open apps or dictate messages simply by speaking. For a simpler home screen, try Assistive Access. It creates a clean layout with large buttons and fewer apps, and you can lock it with a passcode so it won’t accidentally switch back. For someone moving from a flip phone, this can make using the phone much less intimidating. Google Pixel If your mom uses a Google Pixel, open Settings, then Display, and select Display size and text. She can make

words, buttons, and icons larger and increase color contrast to make everything easier to see.

Swipe gestures can be confusing for firsttime smartphone users. Switching to the traditional three-button layout brings back simple on-screen buttons for Home, Back, and Recent Apps, making navigation much easier. In Accessibility, TalkBack can read text aloud, Magnification zooms in on parts of the screen, Live Caption adds subtitles automatically, Sound Amplifier makes soft sounds louder, and Voice Access lets her control the phone by speaking. Samsung Galaxy If she has a Samsung

Galaxy phone, start by turning on Easy Mode. Open Settings, tap Display, and turn it on. This enlarges text and icons, simplifies the home screen, and adds a slight delay to reduce accidental taps.

She can also adjust font size, screen zoom, and switch navigation from gestures to buttons. Accessibility settings improve contrast, offer captions or hearing aid connections, and let her operate the phone with voice commands. Extra tips Clean up your mom’s home screen by removing apps she doesn’t use and placing her most used apps – such as Phone, Messages, and Photos – on the first screen. Choose a simple wallpaper, turn up

the ringtone and alert volume, add favorite contacts for one-touch calling, and increase the screen timeout so the display stays on longer.

Remember, the goal isn’t to master every feature. Start with the basics – answering calls, sending texts, and taking photos – and give her plenty of time to practice. A little patience goes a long way. With a few simple adjustments, her smartphone can become a tool she actually enjoys using.
