BeachBlast this Saturday By Loretta Cozart This Saturday Kings Mountain will feel more like Ocean Drive, as the City brings the beach experience to Patriots Park. Bring your family and friends out to enjoy the fun. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. and beach music fans can shag into the summer night with some of the hottest bands in the South. A second article describes the bands and and music scheduled. With various types of music being played by four different bands, you are sure to hear

great music throughout the day. Plan to spend a day in Kings Mountain and enjoy some free family fun! Activities include Inflatables, Bubble Play, the Rotary Splash Pad, continuous rounds of Water Wars, a Woodie car show, a watermelon eatin’ contest, Tiny Tots and Teeny Bikini Contest, and the Big Beach Ball Drop. Fireworks follow the last performance. Food and craft vendors will setup at Patriots Park in downtown with unique art, crafts, and collectibles

Road closures for BeachBlast The City of Kings Mountain looks forward to this year’s Beach Blast event, located at Patriots Park. To prepare for the event, certain roads will be closed or barricaded. A portion of Railroad Avenue and West Gold Street that runs adjacent to Patriots Park will be closed beginning at midnight, Friday, August

Prayer Walk for KM Schools The Kings Mountain Ministerial Association will be leading a Prayer Walk for Kings Mountain Schools on Sunday, August 26, at 5:00 p.m. You are invited to come to the school of your choice to pray for school administrators, teachers and their assistants, support staff, students and their homes. Prayer is the most powerful resource we have. The ministerial association will have ministers or church staff persons at each of the eight schools in Kings Mountain and Grover for the prayer walk. BeachBlast has music for everyone By Loretta Cozart BeachBlast kicks-off Saturday, August 25, at 10 a.m. with Mr. Mink, Mark Blanton getting the party started, followed by DJ Captain Ron. The day’s line-up includes: The Swingin’ Medallions - 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Swingin' Medallions Band has been based out of Green-

wood, South Carolina, since the early 1960's and their musical roots came from listening to the early rhythm and blues acts. This high-energy party band is well known for their live beach, frat rock, R&B, or shagging' music. The group’s signature high-energy style delights audiences of all ages. The band was founded in 1962 by John McElrath and now includes his sons, Shawn and Shane. Jimmy

Perkins, an original member of the group has been back traveling fulltime with the band since July 2011! Featuring an ever-popular horn section, the group effectively blends the sounds and music of yesterday and today. The band was made famous by its 1.5 million selling hit album, “Double Shot of My Baby’s Love”, in 1966. It remains the signature song of the band. Deputy Sims released from hospital By Loretta Cozart Cleveland County Deputy Sheriff Tim Sims returned home to the cheers of co-workers, family, and

friends last Saturday afternoon. He was transported by police vehicle in an escort from Charlotte to Shelby. Arriving at the Sheriff’s Department, Sims received a hero’s welcome of cheers and applause. With difficulty, Sims walked from the vehicle and greeted Sheriff Alan Norman. On Sim’s

cheek was the evidence of a healing wound where he had been shot in the face. Sim’s turned to the crowd and asked, “Who’s answering calls,” which was followed by laughter from those gathered there. He thanked everyone for coming out. “This is wonderful. See SIMS, Page 9A
