KMHS graduates awarded $3 million in scholarships

By Loretta Cozart Kings Mountain High School Class of 2022 graduates were awarded $3,056,798 in scholarship money during the Senior Awards Night program held on Thursday, June 2.

The three top scholarship award recipients were Junior Boakye - $172,000 from the RW Andrews Scholarship, Mark Petrilli - $80,000 as a Goodnight Scholar, and Cooper Putnam – $60,000 from NCSU

Centennial.

Three Dover Foundation Scholarships were awarded: $20,000 to Jonah Patrick, $15,000 to Sally Ozmore, and $10,000 to Sage Wright.

The $10,000 State Employees Credit Union Scholarship was awarded to Rachel Whitaker and the $8,000 Harry Clarke Memorial Scholarship went to Mark Allen.

Taco Tuesday - Beef Our Community at 133 West

By Loretta Cozart Downtown restaurant, 133 West selected Kings Mountain Gateway Trail as their sponsored nonprofit in the month of June for “Taco about Tuesday Beef Our Community.”

Five percent of Tuesday sales for the month of June will be donated to the Gateway Trail. The restaurant is open 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. and looks forward to a great month supporting this Kings Mountain non-profit.

133 West is located at 133 West Mountain Street in downtown Kings Mountain. Due to Streetscape work, West Mountain Street is closed for construction. However, the Cherokee Street parking lot behind the restaurant is open with ample parking.

A sidewalk leading from the parking lot provides easy access to the restaurant for dine-in or carryout.

■ OBITUARIES

Claude S. Dixon, Jr. CHERRYVILLE – Mr. Claude Solomon Dixon, Jr. passed away on Friday, May 27, 2022, at Cleveland County Hospice in Shelby, NC. He was born on June 13, 1928, in Cherryville, NC, to the late Claude S. Dixon, Sr. and Mamie Louise Byers Dixon. Claude, or “Papa” as he was so affectionately called by many, was a graduate of John Chavis High School in Cherryville, NC. He served in the United States Army, receiving the Occupational Medal (Germany) and an honorable discharge in 1952. His life’s career was working for The Cherryville Eagle, the hometown newspaper that he had sold on street corners as a boy and grew up to work there for many years as a Print Editor, even continuing after the newspaper was obtained

by The Republic Newspaper Company. He retired from The Eagle after over 50-plus years of employment. He was well-known in the community, due to his work on the newspaper, but mostly because of his gentle demeanor and willingness to help however he could.

His stellar work ethic was honored when he was inducted into the Cherryville Hall of Fame. Claude was a lifelong member of Rudisill Chapel AME Zion Church in Cherryville, where he faithfully served as the Sunday School Superintendent and a Choir member. He is the recipient of North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, presented to him by Governor James G. Martin. He loved reading the newspaper, sporting a dapper hat or cap with khakis and a collar shirt, keeping his car impeccably clean, and spending time with his family and friends. He spent his last years at Somerset Court of Cherryville, where he was everyone’s “Papa”.

In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by his longtime devoted partner, Ms. Hattie Davis Roberts; one sister, Virginia Delores Dixon Twitty (Joseph); his niece, Angela Twitty Richardson; and his brother-in-law, Nelson Braxton. Claude leaves to cherish precious memories: one daughter, Claudia Stowe (Christopher) and granddaughter, Calli Lauren Stowe of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Johnnie Louise Dixon Braxton, of Lynchburg, VA; nephew, Peter Richardson, great-niece, Allie Delores Richardson both of Lilburn, GA, great-nephew, and Peter Christian Richardson, II, of Daytona Beach, FL. He leaves behind a loved and adored adopted family consisting of a daughter, Zita Roberts of Durham, NC; two grandsons: Andre Roberts of Durham, NC, and Anthony Roberts (Amber) of Kings Mountain, NC; great-grandchildren: Remun Roberts (Ta’leea) of Salisbury, NC; Julius, Israel, Zion and Gabriel Roberts,

all of Durham, NC; Jakarri Roberts, Katlynn Roberts, Tyler McIntyre, and Noah Parks, all of Kings Mountain, NC; a long-time dear friend, Elsie “Boots” Foster of Shelby, NC; and many friends.

Public viewing was at Costner Funeral Home, 2425 W. Franklin Blvd., Gastonia, NC, on Friday, June 3, 2022 from 3 until 7 p.m.

Funeral arrangements were at Rudisill Chapel AME Zion Church, Cherryville, NC, on Saturday, June 4, 2022 with burial at Cherryville City Cemetery.

Costner Funeral Home served the family of Mr. Dixon.

James Albert Childers KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – James Albert Childers, 90, of Kings Mountain, NC, went to be with the Lord on June 3, 2022 at his home.

He was born in Cleveland County, NC, son of the late Teal and Myrtle Mauney Childers and was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Libby. James was also preceded in death by a brother, Ray Childers, a sister, Annie Mae Berry, and a son-in-law, Scott Fite.

He was a lifelong member of Dixon Presbyterian Church. James served his country honorably in the US Army. He retired from Minette Mills in Grover, NC after 33 years of service and worked in the family poultry business for most of his life.

James was an avid Atlanta Braves and Duke Blue Devils fan. He loved spending time gardening and enjoyed his family’s annual beach trips together. James loved his family immensely and especially cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren.

His kindness, guidance, and love will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years: Margaret Earle Childers, of the home; daughters: Trudy Bridges and husband Kevin, Kings Mountain, NC and Ann White and husband Gary, Shelby, NC; grandchildren: Jason Fite, Shelby, NC, Ethan Fite and wife Monica, Greenville, SC, and Katie Kates and husband Adam, Kings Mountain, NC; siblings: Robert Childers and wife Doris and Mary Goforth, both of Kings Mountain, NC. Visitation was held on Sunday, June 5, 2022 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM in the parlor of Harris Funeral Home.

Funeral service was held on Monday, June 6, 2022 at 2:00 PM in the Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel with Reverends Randy Patterson and Graham Wood officiating.

Interment was held in Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, NC. Memorials may be made in honor of James’ memory to Dixon Presbyterian Church at 602 Dixon School Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086 or to Hospice of Cleveland County at 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

Joe King KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Joe King, 69, of Kings Mountain, NC, went home to be with the Lord on May 29, 2022 at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He was born in Cleveland County, NC on January 8, 1953, to the late Ellis Harmon and Maude Jolly King.

Joe faithfully attended Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. He retired from the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Terri Cash King; brothers, Tommy, David, Bobby, and Jimmy King; and a sister, Barbara Wright.

Joe is survived by a son, Wayne King and fiancé, Nikki Massey; two sisters, Janelle Wood and husband John, and Susan King; a grandson, Noah King; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Joe’s life was held Thursday, June 2, 2022, at 6:30 pm at Bethel Baptist Church, 606 South Dekalb Street, Shelby, NC. Dr. Tim Sims officiated. The family received friends prior to the service at the church from 5:00 – 6:30 pm. Interment was private.

Pallbearers were deputies from the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office. Honorary pallbearers were active and retired law enforcement officers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church Building Fund, 606 Dekalb Street, Shelby, NC 28150.

Arrangements are with the West Chapel of Greene Funeral Service and Crematorium, 216 Archie Whitesides Road, Gastonia, NC 28052.

CCSO adds Lee to Most Wanted Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office has added Cameron Vestavion Lee, 34, to their Most Wanted list. Lee is described as 6’ 01” tall and weighing 180 pounds.

He is wanted for attempted murder and discharging weapon into occupied vehicle.

On June 3, William Millard Stamey, age 83, of the 900 block of Kelly Rd. in Mt. Holly, NC was reported missing by family members. He was last seen on June 3, around 8:00 a.m., leaving his residence.

When Stamey was last seen, he was driving his 2021 GMC Canyon Elevation 4 door pick-up truck, red in color, with running boards. The vehicle has a NC registration plate of JER-1792. His truck was captured on a traffic camera headed south on Hwy 21 near Gold Hill Rd. outside Fort Mill, SC at 3:22 p.m. on June 3.

William Millard Stamey is a white male, age 83, 6ft 2in tall, 170 lbs.

He has thin/balding hair, and he wears glasses.

When he was last seen he was wearing khaki pants and a cowboy hat. He has

Battleground Avenue, sideswiped a parked 2016 Kia owned by Thomas Melvin Curry, 416 N. Battleground Avenue and hit a mailbox at 416 N. Battleground. Property damage was estimated at $7,250.

GCPD charges man and woman with sex offenses involving a juvenile Gaston County Police have charged Jerry Douglas Gillespie, age 36, and Ashley Jordan Hardee, age 32, of 66 Rex Ave. Gastonia, NC with multiple sex offenses involving child. Gillespie is charged with one felony count of First-Degree Statutory Rape of a Child, two felony counts of Indecent Liberties with a Child, and one felony count of Sex Act by Substitute Parent on a Child.

The investigation and resulting charges stem from a report made to the police by

Gaston County Child Protective Services after the victim disclosed the abuse to a social worker.

After Gillespie and

Hardee were arrested, another child came forward. As a result of that investigation, Gillespie was charged with four felony counts of Indecent Liberties with a Minor and Hardee was charged with two felony counts of Indecent Liberties with a minor.

Both remain in custody at the Gaston County Jail under a $500,000 secured bond.

Every September, Kings Mountain Historical Museum hosts a fundraiser to generate revenue necessary to support our programming. The Annual Reverse Raffle and Auctions has been acclaimed the “best event of the year in Kings Mountain” and this 19th annual fundraiser will be held in-person at the Joy Performance Center.

Does the word “wor-

ship” bring to mind a gathering of people? God certainly commands assembling with others for worship! But God’s word also indicates the importance of private worship.

Private worship one offers God in times of solitude is foundational to public worship.

Scripture is filled with instances of believers worshipping privately before God. The Patriarchs are described as worshipping God in private. In Genesis 12, when Abram reaches Canaan after leaving his home, he builds an altar and calls upon the name of the LORD. Such private worship of God

Mark’s gospel records Jesus arising early in the morning that He might go to a desolate place to pray.

Jesus shared glory with His Father from all eternity, then longed for His presence after incarnation, and sought it in private devotion. On the night of His betrayal the intimacy of His communion with His Father is displayed in the prayers He prayed.

Is private worship important to you? Do you regularly make time to quiet yourself, to seek God in His word, in prayer, and praise? A marriage relationship won’t remain intimate if a husband and wife only see each other

Daniel was famously devoted to private worship. An exile in Babylon, he was subject to the edicts of the king of Babylon.

When King Darius signed an injunction forbidding prayer made to any deity, the judgment for violation was to be cast into a den of lions. But Daniel would not cease his private worship of the LORD! Three times a day he got down on his knees, offering thanks and prayer to God in his upper chamber with his window open to Jerusalem, even at the risk of his life!

Neither will one’s relationship with the LORD grow in intimacy and depth without regular, private worship. Apart from private worship of God, one’s heart can become dull toward public worship. Robert Murray McCheyne wrote, “What a man is on his knees before God, that he is, and nothing more.” Does time in private worship strengthen your love for the Lord and desire for intimacy with Him? This is the fruit of faithful private worship of God, which then overflows in public worship!

BROCCOLI RICE CASSEROLE Barbara Devane Bridges 1 large onion, chopped 1 stick margarine 2 cups rice, cooked 2 pkgs. Frozen broccoli, chopped and cooked 1 can cream of chicken soup Salt and pepper ½ lb. sharp cheese, grated Combine rice, ½ of the margarine, soup, salt, and pepper. Sauté onion in ½ the margarine; combine with the rice mixture. Put broccoli in a casserole and pour rice mixture over.

Top with cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Serves 8 to 12.

BEAN CASSEROLE Orangrel Jolly 2 (9 oz.) pkgs French-style green

beans 1 (3 ½ oz.) can French’s onions 1 can cream of mushroom soup Cook green beans 1 minute longer than on label.

Drain beans keeping ½ cup liquid. Put beans in casserole dish. Stir in soup, onions and ½ cup liquid. Bake for 15 minutes or longer at 400 degrees.

OKRA FRITTERS Lydia Jane Edwards ½ lb. okra, sliced 1 med/ onion, chopped 1 tomato, chopped 1 egg ½ cup flour ½ cup corn meal Mix all ingredients together. Spoon into hot grease.

RITZ CRACKER PIE Peggy Ramey 20 Ritz crackers ¾ cup sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 3 egg whites ½ cup nuts Crush crackers with rolling pin; add ½ of the sugar and all the nuts. Beat 3 egg whites until stiff; add 1 teaspoon vanilla and the remaining sugar. Mix all ingredients. Fold in the cracker mixture- do not use mixer.

Grease pie pan with butter, shape mixture into crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Cool.

FILLING: Whip ½ pint cream, pour into crust and sprinkle coconut on top. Cool Whip, etc. can be substituted for whipped cream.

Things to do with the family at Crowders Mountain State Park Crowders Mountain State Park offers a variety of things to do to keep you and your family entertained and healthy, and offers great activities that bring you and your family closer to nature.

The park is a wonderful place for a hike. Backside Trail starts at the Linwood Access Area and ends at the summit of Crowders Mountain. Take note that just before reaching the summit, hikers will climb up 336 wooden steps. It is a terrific way to get your steps in.

It is .9-mile hike one way and is considered a strenuous hike.

Crowders Trail includes one state road crossing and provides access to the Crowders summit via the Backside Trail.

This is a 2.8-mile hike one way and is considered a moderate hike with a natural surface.

Family Camping Trail gives campers access to the family backpack camping area.

It is 1-mile hike one way and is considered a moderate hike.

Fern Trail is a loop trail that connects with the Turnback Trail and follows a creek for some portions of the trail. It is a .8-mile hike and is considered easy.

Paddling and Fishing: Watch a long, lazy afternoon slip away while enjoying the park’s beautifully wooded lake. Located near the park office and picnic areas, the seven-acre manmade lake has parking nearby.

Fish from choice fishing spots on the banks or try your luck on their fishing pier. Visitors and anglers may launch personal canoes and kayak.

Orienteering: At the website, you can download instructions and map for orienteering at Crowders Mountain.

Rock Climbing: Experienced climbers will enjoy the challenges of Crowders Mountain. Climbing is permitted in designated areas only. Pitons, bolts, or similar devices that may damage cliff faces are not permitted. Further information may be obtained at the park office.

Bouldering: This form of rock climbing, done without anchors and ropes, is available at the Boulders a one-mile hike from the Boulders Access Area. All climbing regulations, including the requirements of a permit, are in effect and some sections of Boulders may be closed to bouldering at certain times of the year. Check with park staff for more information.

Picnicking: The shade of large trees provides a spot for outdoor dining in a beautifully wooded area. Scattered throughout the picnic area are 10 tables with a grill at each table. There are five picnic tables at the Linwood Access Area and four at the Boulders Access Area. Drinking water and restrooms are located nearby.

Two large shelters with tables and grills are available for

group picnics. Reservations are suggested to be certain they are available. Use of the shelters is free of charge and on a firstcome, first-served basis unless a reservation is requested.

Three access points are available to visitors of the park: Sparrow Springs Road Access and Visitor Center 522 Park Office Lane Kings Mountain, NC 28086 Linwood Road Access 4611 Linwood Road Gastonia, NC 28086 GPS: 35.2409, -81.2693 Boulders Access 108 Van Dyke Road Kings Mountain, NC 28086 History of the park: When exploratory drilling and excavation began in 1970, the threat that Crowders Mountain would be mined led local citizens to seek its preservation.

The Gaston Conservation Society was organized to block mining operations and encourage the state to acquire and protect the mountain. Based upon the group’s proposal and local support, the state approved Crowders Mountain as a potential state park. A year later funds were appropriated for land acquisition. The park was created in 1973 but did not open to the public until 1974.

It was not until 1978 that the summit of Crowders Mountain was included within the park boundary. The Pinnacle and additional acreage were acquired in 1988. In 2000, an additional 2,000 acres was purchased connecting the park to Kings Mountain State Park and Kings Mountain National Military Park in South Carolina.

Neisler LEC addition nears completion Over the past couple of years, the walls of an enlarged facility for adult daycare have slowly been taking shape on the Kings Mountain Boulevard. In just a few weeks, the construction will come to an end, and a dream that started six years ago will finally be a reality.

“It was in 2016 that our board decided to proceed with a 10,000-square-foot addition to our 14,000-square-foot facility,” says Life Enrichment Center (LEC) Executive Director Toni Camp.

In November of 2019 the Kings Mountain LEC broke ground. Things were going along quite well – for a while.

“Then Covid happened,” says Camp.

“What were we to do?”

The need was too great to be ignored, says Camp, and families were struggling more than ever to find relief from the grind of in-home caregiving.

“So we continued with construction,” says Camp. That commitment proved difficult at times during the past two years, but the process is finally nearing completion.

With locations in Shelby and Kings Mountain, the LEC offers adult day care services to the aging population as well as younger adults with physical and developmental disabilities.

When it opened in 2004, the Kings Mountain location served six participants.

By the time the renovation was approved, it was serving 65 participants a day with a growing waitlist.

“There were just so many families who needed our services,” says Camp.

The LEC got its start in 1980 in a Sunday school room at John Knox Presbyterian Church, and it grew from there.

The first center, located in Shelby, was built in 1995, and was eventually replaced by a new, 25,000-square-foot facility in 2011.

The new addition will allow the Kings Mountain facility to echo the Shelby location’s ability to serve younger and older adults in different areas of the same facility.

The calendar at both LECs keeps participants busy with activities like horticulture, talent shows, cooking and music therapy.

Sara Renner knows first-hand how amazingly helpful the LEC’s services can be. Her 22-year-old daughter, Mary, has been a participant at the Kings Mountain facility for more than two years.

“I just love the staff there – I can’t say enough wonderful things about them,” says Sara Renner. “They provide so many activities – it has allowed Mary to develop her skills and keeps her active and happy.

Many times she doesn’t even want to come home!”

Gardner-Webb Recognizes Cleveland Co. students for Academic Achievement, Service and Volunteerism Winners Honored for Leadership in Classroom and Community

PCA archers sweep state championships Pinnacle Classical Academy's archery team, the Thunderbirds, competed in the 2022 North Carolina Scholastic 3-D Archery 3D State Championship and won the state championship titles in all three divisions.

Over 130 archers competed in the event, which took place on May 21 at the Sage Creek 3D Archery Range in Mount Airy.

Emma Gladden (grade 3), Ryleigh Dellinger (grade 5), Anzlee Kilby (grade 7), Aidyn Smith (grade 7), Carter Ross (grade 9), Caleb Yates (grade 9), and Heather Carswell (grade 10) all won individual state titles.

"We are so proud of the members of our archery team, which has won numerous state and national championships over the

years," said Dr. Shelly Bullard, the school's headmaster. "And we are so grateful for our parent-led coaching organization that does such an excellent job working with students.

Sara and Todd Tongel started the Thunderbirds almost nine years ago, and with the assistance of other parents have built a powerhouse archery dynasty here at Pinnacle."

"Significant archery scholarships are one reason why the 30 members of the class of 2021 were offered a combined $4,093,820 in four-year academic and athletic scholarship awards," Dr. Bullard added.

The Thunderbirds will compete in the 2022 Scholastic 3-D Archery 3D National Championship in Illinois in June.

"The Athletic Department is very proud of our archery team," said Brandon Gosey, Pinnacle Classical Academy's Athletic Director. "The Thunderbirds continue to set the bar higher and higher each year for all teams across the state and country. The team's determination and commitment to the sport are second to none! The Thunderbirds' success continues to put PCA Athletics on the map, and we wish them the best of luck at Nationals."

The award includes a gift to encourage and assist the student in continued engagement with biblical Hebrew. The award is named in memory of Dr. Gerald Keown, Professor of Old Testament Interpretation from 1996 to his retirement in 2019, and his beloved wife Sharon.

• Erin White was the winner of the Gil Blackburn Excellence in Western Civilization Award, named for Blackburn, who served as professor of History and vice president and dean of Academic Affairs from 1968-2004. This award is given to an outstanding freshman or sophomore student in the Western Civilization courses.

Gardner-Webb President Dr. William Downs named one of Charlotte’s 2022 Most Admired CEOs Downs Selected by Charlotte Business Journal as One of Three Honorees in Education Category Gardner-Webb University President Dr. William Downs has been chosen to receive an elite honor. The Charlotte Business Journal (CBJ) selected him as one of Charlotte’s 2022 Most Admired CEOs. The awards recognize leaders who have a strong vision for their companies, have shown commitment to culture in the workplace and made significant contributions to the Charlotte community.

Downs was among 40 honorees handpicked from more than 140 nominations made by members of the business community. Further, he was one of only three selected from the education category. Downs’ career spans over two decades of service

in higher education. Before GWU, he was dean of the Thomas Harriot College of Arts & Sciences at East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville, N.C. He had been at ECU since 2014 and was also the W. Keats Sparrow Distinguished Chair in the Liberal Arts and a professor of political science. He’s also held positions at Georgia State University and was a research fellow at Harvard University’s Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies.

A Raleigh native, Downs earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science (with a minor in journalism) from North Carolina State University (Raleigh) in 1988, and his Master of Arts (‘90) and Doctoral (‘94) degrees in political science from Emory University (Atlanta). Downs is married to Kimberly Harwood Downs and has two children, Rachel and Bradley.

Downs and the other winners will be recognized for their achievements at The Most Admired CEO Awards dinner on June 16 in Charlotte.

Paddling If you are paddling, be aware of what conditions are

expected in the park. In areas of open ocean, paddling can be a high-risk activity that should not be undertaken alone, or by any novice, firsttime, or inexperienced ocean paddler. Check the safety rules for any state park site you plan to visit and experience through paddling. Make sure to choose a form of paddling that is appropriate to your experience level –open ocean versus sheltered bays or wetlands, guided versus unguided, and so on –so that you can have the best possible experience exploring your state parks.

Waterfalls • Stay on developed trails and don't stray from observation decks and platforms.

• Pay attention to the warning signs and rules you see posted near waterfalls.

• Never climb on or around waterfalls. Rocks are more slippery than they look.

• Never jump off waterfalls or dive into plunge pools. Rocks and logs are often beneath the surface of the water but difficult to see.

Currents caused by a waterfall can drag and keep you underwater.

• Watch children care-

fully. Children should always be under the immediate supervision of adults when visiting any waterfalls. Pets should also be supervised.

They can easily underestimate the slickness of rocks and the flow of water.

• Never play in the stream or river above a waterfall.

You can easily be swept over the falls by currents. Do not try to take photos or selfies at the top of a waterfall! People lose their footing while paying attention to their photo set-up and fall over.

• Slippery rocks and mud are common along trails as

you near waterfalls. Use extra caution on the trail as you approach waterfalls.

• Since many waterfalls are in remote areas, a medical rescue could take hours.

• Wear hiking shoes with a good grip. Flip flops and sandals make you particularly vulnerable to slipping or injuring yourself.

• Bring a picnic and plenty of water. Reaching some waterfalls in your state parks requires a challenging hike!

• Plan ahead to ensure you will be back at your campsite or parking area before sunset.

COVID numbers in NC, and Bobs Creek State Natural Area Cleveland Co., on the rise opens in McDowell County More than half of North Carolina’s counties are in the medium to high range for COVID, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s COVID Data Tracker. One week ago, only Durham County was in the orange level, indicating that more than 200 people had tested positive in that county during the prior seven days.

As of June 2, CDC’s COVID data for Cleveland County indicated that 146 people tested positive for the virus within the prior seven days. The reported case rate for the county was 149.06, an increase of 114.71%.

Less that ten deaths were reported, but the death rate for the prior seven days was suppressed in the report.

The percentage of those who tested positive was 10.92%.

Of the approximately 97,947 people living in Cleveland County, 67.6% have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine, and 50.9% are considered completely vaccinated.

Of those over 65 years old who are at greatest

risk, 95% have received on COVID vaccine, and 84.7% are considered fully vaccinated. The CDC reports that only 40.3% of these people have received booster vaccines.

CDC’s Coronavirus Disease 2019-Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network (COVID-NET) shows that overall rates nationwide of COVID-19-associated hospitalizations have increased since the week ending April 2. Notably, adults ages 65 years and older have seen the sharpest increase in rates, from 6.7 per 100,000 population on April 2, to 24.3 per 100,000 population on May 14. Among this group, older adults ages 85 and older have had the largest increase in hospitalization rates, increasing from 14.8 per 100,000 population on April 2, to 68.7 per 100,000 population on May 14.

COVID-19 cases are increasing across the country, yet vaccination rates among children ages 5 through 11 years old continue to lag behind other age groups, which leaves them at increased risk for serious ill-

ness. As of June 1, 2022, 35.9% of children ages 5 through 11 years old have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, compared to 69.5% of children ages 12 through 17 years old. Since the pandemic began, more than 4.8 million children ages 5 through 11 years old have been diagnosed with COVID-19, 15,000 have been hospitalized, and almost 200 have died.

CDC also strengthened its recommendation that adults ages 50 years and older, as well as those 12 years and older who have weakened immune systems, should get a second booster at least four months after their first. Older Americans have the highest coverage of any age group of first booster doses, but most received their last dose (either their primary series or their first booster dose) many months ago, leaving many without optimal protection against serious illness, hospitalization, and death.

As of June 1, a total of 1,002,993 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in the United States.

How to Get Underutilized COVID Funeral Assistance Funds Dear Savvy Senior, I recently saw a news segment on TV about a government funeral assistance program available to families who lost loved ones during the pandemic. What can you tell me about this? I lost my 78-year-old mother to COVID in 2021 and want to find out if I’m still eligible for any funeral funds, and if so, what I need to do to get them.

Still Sad Dear Sad, I’m very sorry about the loss of your mother. The government program you are asking about is the COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (or FEMA). This program is part of the American Rescue Plan, a stimulus package passed in 2021 in an effort to help the country financially manage amid the pandemic.

This program, which has no end date, offers up to $9,000 to cover the cost of a funeral for someone who died of COVID-19 as far back as January 2020.

Unfortunately, less than half the people believed eligible for funeral assistance have actually applied for it.

Here’s what you should know about the program’s requirements and how to apply.

Where to Start?

To apply for COVID-19 funeral assistance, you must do it over the phone by calling FEMA at 844-6846333, anytime Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time. The application process takes about 20 minutes.

After you apply, FEMA will provide you an application number, which you may use to create an online account at DisasterAssistance.gov if you choose.

You will then need to submit supporting documents, including a death certificate for your mother, but it must state that her death “may have been caused by” or “was likely the result of” COVID-19 or COVID-19like symptoms. Her death must also have occurred in the U.S. on or after Jan. 20, 2020.

If you don’t have this, you won’t be eligible.

You’ll also need to submit proof of funeral expenses, such as itemized receipts, invoices or funeral home contracts.

These supporting documents can be submitted either online (through your DisasterAssistance.gov account), by mail (P.O. Box 10001, Hyattsville, MD 20782) or via fax (855-261-3452).

After the paperwork is received, it takes FEMA about 45 days to make an eligibility decision.

Families who had multiple deaths due to the coronavirus can also apply. One family can receive up to $35,000 across multiple funerals.

Reimbursements can be used to cover any portion of funeral expenses including burial plots, caskets, preparation of the body, cremation, urns, clergy, services and headstones as well as costs related to state or local ordinances and producing death cer-

tificates.

But be aware that pre-paid funerals are not eligible for reimbursements.

Any payment made specifically for a funeral prior to death is considered a duplication and is not eligible.

If FEMA approves your application, the funds will either be deposited into your bank account or sent by mail via check, usually within a few days of approval.

If, however, you receive a letter from FEMA saying you’re ineligible, or if the amount awarded is not enough, you have the right to appeal within 60 days of FEMA’s decision letter.
