KMPD investigating home invasion

The Kings Mountain Police Department is actively investigating a home invasion that occurred on May 9, 2026, at approximately 5:55 a.m. in the Lake Montonia area of Kings Mountain.

During the incident, the suspect, identified as Michael Cody Wilson, allegedly entered an occupied residence while armed with a sawed-off shotgun. Wilson reportedly threatened and terrorized the occupant before stealing property from the residence and fleeing the scene on foot.

Following the identification of Wilson as the suspect, a coordinated multi-agency search operation was initiated involving the Kings Mountain Police Department, Gaston County Police Department, and Cleveland County Sheriff's Office. During the search efforts, detectives recovered the sawed-off shotgun believed to have been used during the incident, along with a face mask and gloves, in a wooded area near the scene. K9 units and drones were deployed in an extensive effort to locate Wilson; however, he remains at large at this time.

Wilson was last seen wearing a black shirt, black shorts, and black shoes. He is described as a white male, approximately 6’3” tall, with several tattoos on both arms.

Cleveland County Farm Bureau holds Safety Day at KMHS

About 200 Career Development students at Kings Mountain High School recently got some first-class instruction on home and farm safety from members of the Cleveland County Farm Bureau and other community helpers.

Farm Bureau members on the scene included board members Thad Allen, Kevin Parker, Myron Edwards, and president Craig Mayes. Representatives from Rutherford Electric, Cleveland County EMS, the NC Forest Service, and Cleveland County Emergency Management also took part. A spanking new tractor and combine from the local John Deere dealer James River Equipment served as a farm safety demonstration aid.

If anyone has additional information, they are encouraged to contact the Kings Mountain Police Department at 704-734-0444 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers via the tip line at 704-4818477, or by scanning the QR code below. Do not approach the suspect, as he should be considered armed and dangerous.

The students formed up in small groups and rotated through the various demonstration stations where they learned what and what not to do when around agricultural and lawn machinery. They also learned first aid tips and home safety.

explained tractor power take-off shaft precautions and what can happen if you put your fingers too close to the drive chain and sprockets on a hay baler. For that demo, Allen inserted a wiener into a rubber glove to simulate a finger, tied the glove to a stick, started the baler, and poked the “finger” into the works. The gnarly result definitely got the students’ attention.

“We don’t want to scare you,” said Allen. “We just want you to be aware.”

Student Kaydence Den said the information was interesting.

“My grandfather has a tractor,” she said.

Another demo at the Farm Bureau station used miniature lawn tractor models with a baby doll on one and a sock monkey on the other. The baby doll had a roll cage and seat belt. The sock monkey did not. After rolling the mowers down a table the monkey flipped and came out the worse for wear thus demonstrating lawn care safety.

“Safety is the watchword,” said Parker.

At another station, NC Service County ranger Craig Oliver held a chain saw safety demo. He showed the students how to put on the full woodcutting regalia of helmet, chaps, earmuffs, and eye protection. He also explained

how important it is to make sure you don’t accidentally surprise someone who is sawing.

‘Don’t come up and startle them,” he said. “They might not see you and swing around.”

Student Carter Delling allowed as how he had operated a chainsaw before but learned something new from Oliver.

“It was very helpful,” Delling said.

In a mobile unit on the school campus, Cleveland County EMS instructor Shawn Elliot held a very insightful seminar on how to do CPR, apply a heart defibrilla-

tor, and how tight to tighten a tourniquet. Elliot’s talk had a rapt audience of about 25 kids who hung on his every wordknowing the facts could save someone’s life someday.

Student KJ Bell even tried his hand on the CPR rubber torso.

“It’s good to learn this,” he said.

Other safety stations on the rotation included demonstrations of fire extinguisher use, fire suppression blankets, and electrical safety.

The session wrapped up with a bang- literally. Back See FARM BUREAU, See Page 4A

Gaston County Police safely arrest barricaded suspect

Alexander Jordan Fisher

In the early morning hours of May 11, 2026 the Gaston County Police Department responded to a call for service involving a male trespassing at a residence on Florham Drive outside of Dallas. Gaston County Police Officers attempted to arrest Alexander Jordan Fisher when he barricaded himself inside of his residence.

After several hours of attempting to de-escalate the situation, the Gaston County Police Department’s Emer-

gency Response Team made entry into the residence and safely took Fisher into custody. Fisher was provided with medical attention and booked into the Gaston County Jail. Fisher was charged with 1st degree trespassing, and resist, delay, or obstruct a public officer. Neisler presented David Poole Media Service Award

At the annual Gaston County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, Scott Neisler was presented with The David Poole Media Service Award by Tennessee Basketball Coach Rick Barnes. What started as a hobby announcing games on the radio at Kings Mountain High School turned into a lasting impact on sports media in our region. During that time, the Mountaineers captured two state baseball championships in 1989 and 1994.

Scott carried that passion to Winthrop University, where he broadcast games for 18 years, including five NCAA tournament appearances.

He later purchased WGNC 1450AM and 101.1 FM in Gastonia and launched the Gaston County Football Game of the Week. Today, the station highlights South Point Red Raiders football and teams from across Gaston County and beyond.

Cleveland County completes post-incident review of Emergency Response Protocols

Cleveland County has completed its review of safety and emergency response protocols for County buildings, as well as the response to the March 10, 2026, bomb threat. The review included interviews conducted by the County Attorney with personnel from each department located in the Cleveland County Administrative Building.

employees were off-site at the time of the incident.

Accordingly, the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners has directed the County Manager to take immediate steps to enhance and refine the County’s safety and emergency response protocols and to implement periodic training to reinforce those procedures.

While officials are grateful that the reported threat was ultimately determined not to be credible, no such incident can be presumed harmless at the outset. Based on information shared by employees, County officials determined that all departments were notified and that the vast majority of employees evacuated the building promptly. The review also identified opportunities to strengthen and refine existing processes. Additionally, it was noted that some

To that end, the County is taking proactive measures to improve its response capabilities, with a focus on more immediate and uniform communication. The County is actively working to secure a qualified emergency notification system to provide both employee and citizen mass notifications, as well as site-specific alerts, to ensure coordinated and effective communication in the

event of future threats. Due to the sensitive nature of emergency response planning, the County will not provide additional details regarding these enhancements. These efforts are intended to strengthen— rather than compromise—the safety of County employees and citizens who frequent County facilities.

The safety of County employees and the public remains the County’s highest priority. Cleveland County appreciates the swift response of emergency personnel and the continued cooperation of its staff as these improvements are implemented.

15th case of rabies identified in Cleveland Co.

On May 7, 2026, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of a skunk that tested positive for rabies. This is the fifteenth rabid animal case identified in the county this year. The animal was found on TC Humphries Farm Road in Mooresboro. Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from this animal should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-484-5169 or 980-484-5100. Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post ex-

posure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with

potentially infectious material such as saliva. Prevention of rabies is based on protection of susceptible animals and people and appropriate management of persons and animals exposed to rabies: 1. Don’t carry what only God can Carry – Your Future!

Matthew 6:25-33

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you

not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or

‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – This was part of them most famous sermon Jesus ever preached to His followers. Too often we worry about things that we have not power or control over. How much time do you waste worrying about work, retirement, family, friends, sickness,

finances, goals or even war? Jesus tells us not to worry about our lives. This can seem like it is almost unreal. Jesus isn’t saying our problems aren’t real, but He is focusing our priorities on the presence of God. Jesus isn’t telling us that life doesn’t have challenges, and we can just ignore those challenges. Jesus gives us the examples of the birds that don’t worry about what they will eat tomorrow. They trust God with the food that He will provide for today. Jesus points to the flow-

ers that aren’t concerned with how they bloom and their beauty but rather in how God will cloth them. The flowers aren’t worried about how they are clothed. Don’t miss that Jesus makes a very important point here. He tells us that we are ‘Much more valuable than these!’ We are created in the Image of God so He cares for us much more than birds and flowers. When we worry we carry a burden that God never intended for us to bare. Jesus invites you to allow God to carry your burdens. They only

Cleveland Community College hosts 5th Annual High School Welding Competition

Cleveland Community College (CCC) welcomed the county’s top young welding talent on Friday, May 1, 2026, for its fifth annual High School Welding Competition. The event kicked off at 9 a.m. and featured 16 student competitors—four each from Burns High School, Crest High School, Kings Mountain High School, and Shelby High School—demonstrating their technical skills and precision in a hands-on, industry-style challenge. The participants received specific guidelines to complete a weld assembly using the SMAW process, and the welds had to be performed in several different positions.

“This competition highlights not only the students’ technical abilities, but also their dedication, discipline, and readiness to enter the workforce,” said Bruce Mack, CCC’s vice president of academic affairs. “We’re proud to provide an opportunity that connects education with real-world industry expectations.”

Each participating school’s top competitor received a $500 scholarship to attend CCC’s welding program, made possible through generous

community support. This year’s recipients are as follows:

Burns High School: Carter Hamrick — Margaret P. Goodman Endowed Scholarship Crest High School: Zack Morrison — Michael David Scott Parsons Endowed Scholarship

KM softball narrowly escapes Sun Valley

When the playoffs start, all it takes is one loss and your season is over. The Kings Mountain Women’s Softball Team came very close to having their season end much sooner than they expected on Friday night, May 8. The Mountaineers defeated the Sun Valley Spartans by the score of 1-0 in the second round of the NC 6A softball playoffs to secure their sixteenth straight win. The Spartans came into the game with a record of 4-14, but they proved to be a much bigger challenge than anyone thought.

Maddie Huffman continued her magical season on the mound. Huffman pitched a complete game, only surrendering 2 hits and striking out 15 Sun Valley batters in recording her 14th win of the season. She also lowered her Earned Run Average (ERA) to .32, which is the 25th lowest average in the nation.

On offense, Kings Mountain was led by Addison Carpenter who had 2 hits and scored the only run of the contest. Kings Mountain now moves into the third round of the state playoffs. Sun Valley’s season is complete.

The 2026 NC 6A Baseball Playoffs started on Tuesday, May 5. The Kings Mountain Mountaineers are the number 12 seed in this year’s bracket, and they hosted a familiar foe in the first round, the number 19 seed Ashbrook Green Wave. The Mountaineers dominated in every facet of the game claiming a convincing 7-0 victory.

Kings Mountain was led by their pitching. Two Mountaineer hurlers combined to throw the shutout. Wesley Turner started the game and pitched 4 innings, giving up 4 hits and no earned runs, while striking out 5 Green Wave batters. Gavyn Manion came into the game in relief and worked 3 innings, yielding only 1 hit and no runs and striking out 2. Manion induced a double play in the top of the seventh inning to get the last 2 outs of the ball game. The Mountaineers blew the game open in the bottom of the third inning by plating 6 runs. Wesley Turner doubled, scoring one run, Lawson Kennedy tripled, scoring another run, KJ Bell doubled, scoring two runs, Mason Wright singled, scoring one run, and Bryson Ciaschini singled, scoring a run. Jordan Buckner then

hit a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning for the last run of the game for Kings Mountain. Other Mountaineer batters contributing in the game were Jordan Buckner, Wesley Turner, Aiden Smith, Mason Wright and Bryson Ciaschini who each had 1 hit. Wildlife Agency changes regulations from under 18 to under 16 years old

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) will open 30 trout streams and two lakes classified as Delayed Harvest to trout harvest on June 6. They will remain open through Sept. 30. On the first Saturday in June, anglers may begin harvesting trout from Delayed Harvest waters. From 6 a.m. until noon, fishing in those waters is limited to youth only. The age that qualifies as a youth is now under 16 years old. It changed from the previous age of under 18 during the 2025-2026 regulations cycle.

“The youth-only fishing period was established by the agency to promote trout fishing among young anglers and to provide additional opportunities for young anglers to catch and keep fish,” said Mountain Fisheries Supervisor Kin Hodges. At noon on June 6, waters open to all anglers. Between June 6 and September 30, anglers can keep up to seven trout per day — with no gear or bait restrictions and no minimum size limits.

Delayed Harvest trout waters are posted with diamond-shaped, black-andwhite signs. A list of Delayed Harvest trout waters, regulation information and trout maps can be found at ncwildlife.gov/trout.

commonly identified domestic animal with rabies.

2. Control measures for pets exposed to rabies: If pets are exposed to rabies, they should receive a booster dose of rabies vaccine if they are currently vaccinated at the time of exposure. If pets are not currently vaccinated against rabies when exposed, the animals will be euthanized or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law.

3. Control measures for persons exposed to rabies: Seek medical guidance from your healthcare provider or the local health department if you believe you have been exposed to rabies.

4. Limit stray and feral animals. In the cities of Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and Grover all dogs must be kept on a leash. People should not approach stray or feral dogs or cats. Feral cat colonies should be intensively monitored, and their location reported to Cleveland County Animal Services.

5. Leave wildlife alone. Raccoons, skunks and other wildlife serve as the reservoir for rabies in North Carolina. Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior should call Cleveland County Animal Services at 704-481-9884.

Where to Get Help with Medicare Decisions

Dear Savvy Senior, I’ll be 65 in a few months and could sure use some help sorting through all the confusing Medicare options that are available to me. Where can I get help with my Medicare decisions?

--Baffled Bob

Dear Bob,

With around 11,400 Baby Boomers turning 65 every day in 2026, you’re asking a very timely question.

Many people approaching Medicare are confused by all the choices available today. In addition to original Medicare (Part A and B) that has been around for more than 60 years, you also have the option of enrolling in a Part D prescription drug plan, and a supplemental (Medi-

gap) policy – both of which are sold by private insurance companies.

Another option is a Medicare Advantage plan. These plans, also offered by private insurers, bundle hospital coverage, medical care, prescription drugs, and often extra benefits like vision, dental, and hearing into one policy. Most operate as HMOs or PPOs and require you to receive care within a defined network of providers in your area.

Medicare Advantage plans have also faced increased scrutiny in recent years over prior-authorization requirements that can delay or deny certain services.

To help you determine which path makes the most sense for your sit-

uation, there are several reliable resources available, depending on how much assistance you need.

Tools and Resources

A good starting point is the “Medicare & You” handbook, which provides a clear overview of the program and your options. You can download a copy at medicare. gov/medicare-and-you, and you should receive a printed version in the mail about a month before your 65th birthday.

The Medicare website also features a helpful “Find a Medicare Plan” tool at medicare.gov/ plan-compare that allows you to compare health plans, prescription drug coverage, and supplemental policies available in your area. If you prefer to speak

with someone directly, call Medicare at 800633-4227, and a representative can walk you through your options over the phone.

Another excellent free resource is your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), which provides unbiased Medicare counseling either in person or by phone. To locate your local SHIP office, visit shiphelp.org or call 877839-2675.

You can also contact the Medicare Rights Center (medicarerights.org) at 800-333-4114 for help with specific questions.

In addition, HealthMetrix Research publishes a free Cost Share Report at medicarenewswatch. com that compares Medicare Advantage

plans by area based on cost-sharing and health status.

Get Help If you’d like more hands-on help, you can work with a Medicare insurance agent.

Keep in mind that agents are paid commissions by insurance companies, so it’s important to choose an independent agent who represents multiple insurers – not just one. That gives you access to a broader range of options.

You can search for licensed agents through nabip.org, the website of the National Association of Benefits and Insurance Professionals.

Taking the time now to compare your options carefully can help you avoid costly mistakes and give you confidence in the coverage you choose.

Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.

Also understand that commissions are typically higher for Medicare Advantage plans than for Medigap and Part D policies used with Original Medicare. As a result, some agents may have a financial incentive to recommend Advantage coverage. That doesn’t mean the advice is wrong, but it’s wise to ask questions and understand all your choices before enrolling.
