Incumbent upsets and record low turnout define 2026 Cleveland County Primary The March 2026 primary election in Cleveland County delivered a night of political shifts and surprising upsets, even as local officials expressed concern over historically low participation at the polls. Clifton Philbeck, Director of the Cleveland County Board of Elections, reported that while the voting process “went smooth” across the county’s precincts, the turnout was “one of the lowest” he could recall for a major primary cycle. Despite the quiet atmosphere at polling sites, the results spoke loudly, particularly in the race for North Carolina House District 110. In a significant upset, newcomer Caroline Eason unseated 15-year incumbent Kelly Hastings. Eason secured the Republican nomination with 53.7% of the total vote, bolstered by a strong showing in neighboring Gaston County. She will move on to face Democrat Mary Silver in November. KMPD and local merchants unite to end crime in KM By Allyson Parker On Thursday, March 6, 2026, the Kings Mountain Police Department, in conjunction with Kings Mountain Forward and area retailers, held a meeting at Joy Theatre. The meeting, which began at 5:30 p.m., was informative in nature and included a question and answer opportunity. The gathering was called in response to several larcenies, as well as a breaking and entering event, which all occurred in the downtown area of Kings Mountain between late February 2026 and early March 2026. The idea behind the meeting was to educate merchants on the foreshadowing of criminal events and the resources that may safely be implemented to avoid crime from occurring, as well as guarding merchandise and being vigilant of surroundings. Foreshadowing and Prevention Patrol Captain Josh Bryant served as the main presenter for the evening. He emphasized the importance of identifying typical events that foreshadow criminal behavior. One specific trend discussed was the use of a "decoy partner," a tactic used during the most recent downtown incidents. In these cases, two people collaborate; one person distracts the retail clerk so the
other has time to remove items from the store. Assistant Chief Kenneth Hamrick verified the department's latest allocators for the prevention of crime, while Captain Gerald Childress delivered opening remarks regarding "the community working together to reduce crime." Digital Tools and De-escalation Captain Buddy Black conveyed a message regarding administrative support and the duty of providing a direct link to ordering police reports. He introduced a streamlined digital portal which allows business owners to upload high-definition surveillance footage directly to investigators. Other key topics included effective methods of de-escalation techniques beneficial to retailers, retail crime trWends, and the business liaison program. During the question and answer session, a recurring concern surfaced regarding the right of a store owner or staff to approach a criminal. Chief Childress made the department's stance clear, stating: "Your life is what matters. Let the police handle the criminals.” Actionable Steps for Retailers The KMPD noted several positive steps to help avoid criminal incidents: Visibility: Maintain clear signage and organized
stores that provide clerks with a clear view. Exterior Maintenance: Increase business visibility with clear windows and trimmed shrubbery. Staffing: Have more than one staff member per shift. Technology: Install cameras and ensure staff are educated on using those systems. Awareness: Be able to notice customers who act suspicious or "don't seem to belong." Reporting: Understand when to dial 911 versus when to call the regular police number. A Commitment to Prosecution One of the KMPD's main goals is to show a presence in retail areas to dissuade crime. Officers clearly advocated prosecution of criminals by urging merchants to pursue all prosecutor efforts and do not drop charges midway through the process. A Message of Unity The message of unity resonated throughout the theater. As one officer stated, "This isn't about you (the Merchant) or about me (as an officer) it is about us & how we can solve a problem together." As Loretta Cozart closed the meeting, she added, "we are a community and we must work together to solve our problems."
KMLT auditions for 1776 Kings Mountain Little Theatre and their sponsors announce auditions for 1776, a musical with music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone. Auditions will take place on Friday, March 13 from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM, and Saturday, March 14 from 2:00 PM-4:00 PM at the Joy Theatre at 202 S Railroad Ave, Kings Mountain, NC 28086. Performances will be June 19-21 and June 26-28. There are roles for 20-25 men, 2 women, plus additional ensemble roles. All are welcome to audition. Barry Eugene Rikard KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Barry Eugene Rikard, 75, passed away on March 5, 2026 at his home in Kings Mountain, NC. Born November 12, 1950 in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late James Bratton and Lois Bennett Rikard and was also preceded in death by his brother Jimmy Rikard. Barry graduated with the Kings Mountain High School Class of 1969, then served his country honorably with the US Army in Vietnam. He was very proud of his service and his country. He worked at and
Eloise Pearson Moss KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – On March 7, 2026, Eloise Pearson Moss, 88, of Kings Mountain, NC, was reunited in heaven with her husband of 71 years, Jack Edward Moss. Born March 19, 1937 in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late James and Wyona Myers Pearson. Eloise was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, her sonin-law, Pastor Joe Riley, her brother, Larry Pearson, and her sister, Evelyn Black. Eloise was the longtime pianist at Eastside Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, and had played at many area churches
retired from Eaton Corporation in Grover. Barry was an avid sports fan and also an active participant for many years in local league basketball and softball. He enjoyed time outdoors, whether he was bird-watching, gardening his beautiful flowers and summer tomato plants, or tending his pool so his family could enjoy it. Barry’s family was his pride and joy; he was a devoted husband, loving father, and exemplary “Pop.” His grandchildren were the most important part of his life, and he cherished his time spent with them, be it on family beach trips or simply being together for meals or swim sessions at his house. Those who knew and loved him will treasure their memories of his charismatic grin, his quick wit, and the remarkable example he set for them. He is survived by his wife of 48 years: Jenny Phillips Rikard; daughter: Stephanie Rikard of Kings Mountain; siblings: Jerry Rikard of Kings Mountain, Nancy Nolan (David) of
Hudson, NC, and Tommy Rikard (Jennifer) of Kings Mountain; grandchildren: Koby Rikard (girlfriend Macey Deering), Makalyn Rikard (fiancé Marty Lovingood), and Kennedy Short. She began her music ministry at local churches as a young girl, and continued to do so as she grew up, even meeting her late husband Jack, the love of her life, on such an occasion. She also owned and operated “The Store,” an antique and collectibles boutique in Gastonia for more than 20 years. Eloise was the portrait of a devoted wife, a constant source of assistance and support for Jack through all of his endeavors. She was a loving mother and committed matriarch. Eloise raised three children who adored her and was a beloved grandmother and great-grandmother to the generations that followed. She is survived by her children: Jackie Riley of Brunswick, GA, Warren Moss of Gastonia, NC, and Ann Johnson and husband Scott of Kings Mountain, NC; brothers: Eddie Black and Reece Black; sisterin-law: Shirley Pearson; grandchildren: Michael Johnson, Katy Moss, and

Gaston County Police FAST Team arrests man wanted for multiple child sex offenses O n Wednesd a y , M a r c h 4, 2026, officers with the Gaston County Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension and Suspect Tracking (FAST) Team, in coordination with the department’s Criminal Investigations Unit, assisted the Siler City Police Department with the execution of a search warrant at an apartment complex in Gaston County. During the operation, Jose Isaias Martel-Arriaga was located and arrested on multiple outstanding warrants from Chatham County, North Carolina. The charges include:

Fourth case of rabies identified in Clev. County On March 6, 2026, the Cleveland County Health Department was notified of a skunk that tested positive for rabies. This is the fourth rabid animal identified in the county this year. The animal was found on 1206 Cleveland Avenue, Grover. Any person bitten or exposed to potentially infectious saliva from this animal should contact their healthcare provider or the local health department for a rabies risk assessment. You may contact the Cleveland County Health Department at 980-484-5169 or 980484-5100. Rabies is a fatal yet preventable disease if post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered. Rabies is transmitted by the bite of an infected animal or via contamination of open wounds or mucus membranes with potentially infectious material such as saliva. Prevention of rabies is based on protection of susceptible animals and people and appropriate management of persons and animals exposed to rabies: 1. Vaccinate pets. In accordance with NC State Law, all dogs, cats, and ferrets must be kept currently vaccinated against rabies and must wear a rabies tag. Cats are the most commonly identified domestic animal with rabies. 2. Control measures for pets exposed to rabies: If pets are exposed to rabies, they should
receive a booster dose of rabies vaccine if they are currently vaccinated at the time of exposure. If pets are not currently vaccinated against rabies when exposed, the animals will be euthanized or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law. 3. Control measures for persons exposed to rabies: Seek medical guidance from your healthcare provider or the local health department if you believe you have been exposed to rabies. 4. Limit stray and feral animals. In the cities of Shelby, Kings Mountain, Boiling Springs, and Grover all dogs must be kept
on a leash. People should not approach stray or feral dogs or cats. Feral cat colonies should be intensively monitored, and their location reported to Cleveland County Animal Services. 5. Leave wildlife alone. Raccoons, skunks and other wildlife serve as the reservoir for rabies in North Carolina. Rabies occurs throughout North Carolina. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior should call Cleveland County Animal Services at 704481-9884.

Tempers increase as energy costs continue to rise
NC Court of Appeals overrules requests to return overcharges to Duke Energy customers By Allyson Parker Concerns regarding utility costs are resonating throughout the community, moving fromformal City Council meetings to public discussions in local shops and gathering spaces. As North Carolina residents brace for significant shifts in their monthly expenses, recent data suggests the financial burden on households is set to increase through the end of the decade. According to Carolina
Forward Publication, there is a growing concern that utility rates are outpacing inflation,placing a disproportionate burden on residential customers who may face larger increases than large-scalefacilities. Projections indicate that for 2027–2028, residential bills could climb by hundreds of dollars annually—a spike that follows several years of already substantial increases. The Legal Dispute Over Overcharges As reported by WECT TV
in Wilmington, a recent decision by the North Carolina Court of Appeals on February18, 2026, has sparked outrage among local rate payers. The court made a final ruling to deny Duke Energy customers a credit or refund for overcharges paid in 2024. KM Citizens voice concerns over exponentially high utility costs The Current Landscape As City Council meetings continue to draw residents into public conversations, a consistent and pressing concern has emerged: the rising cost of utility charges. On February 18, 2026, the NC Court of Appeals made a final decision that delivered a blow to many local households, ruling not to allow Duke Energy customers a credit or refund for 2024 overcharges already paid on their bills. While the NC Court of Appeals acknowledged that North Carolina customers paid more than was actually needed, they overruled
requests to credit billing accounts or return overpayments in check form. The court’s reasoning stemmed from a 2025 legislative change that allows Duke to essentially recoup any refunded money in future cases, rendering a refund "no meaningful relief." How Rates Are Determined The NC Utility Regulator allows Duke Energy to set current yearly rates based on the previous year's actual usage and infrastructure investments. This includes the rising cost of materials and equipment, generation upgrades (such as the shift away from coal toward nat-
ural gas or renewable solar energy), and the need to meet regulatory mandates or population growth. Once these needs are identified, the rate structure is broken down into three primary components: • Base Rates: The costs to cover the operation and maintenance of the electrical system (the "poles and wires"). • Fuel Cost Riders: Price adjustments due to the increasing costs of raw materials like natural gas. • Customer Impact: A final consideration of how significant the increase will See COSTS, Page 5A

Pieces of Kings Mountain History Last week, a member of the Daughters of the American LORETTA Revolution COZART asked about the funeral records of Fulton’s Mortuary in Kings Mountain. While I have not yet located those records, I knew where the mortuary once stood. The 1919 Sanborn Map shows an undertaker at the northwest corner of Mountain and Cherokee Streets, and I also remembered reading that W.A. Mauney was prepared for burial at Fulton’s Mortuary in 1929. Beyond those clues, I realized I knew very little about the business and set out to learn more. Growing up in Kings Mountain during the 1960s and 1970s, I remember these es-
tablishments simply as funeral homes. Earlier generations often used the term “mortuary,” but by the 1940s, “funeral home” had become more common, even though those working there were morticians. By that time, services were often expanded to include viewing rooms and spaces for families to gather. It is unclear whether Fulton’s Mortuary had those services. In earlier years, families often held viewings in their own homes, a practice that largely faded by the 1970s. By the 1960s, Kings Mountain had two funeral homes: Gill & Brown Funeral Home on North Watterson Street and Harris Funeral Home on South Piedmont Avenue. That led me to wonder—what became of Fulton’s Mortuary? Research in the Kings
Mountain Herald archives on DigitalNC.com provided the answer. On August 15, 1947, the paper reported that Ollie Harris had purchased Fulton’s Mortuary from H. Tom Fulton, son of North Carolina Senator Horatio Thomas Fulton Sr. (And, for the record, Harris Funeral Home also bought the H. R. Parton Mortuary.) Harris leased the 1917 Allison home on North Piedmont Avenue and began renovations to establish what would become Harris Funeral Home. Until the work was complete, the business continued operating from the Cherokee Street location. At the time of the sale, H. Tom Fulton was serving as mayor of Kings Mountain and explained he was stepping away from the mortuary to devote more time to man-

The Kings Mountain Herald reported that at the time of the sale, Fulton’s Mortuary was one of the oldest businesses in Kings Mountain. The Fulton family had long been deeply connected to the community. H. T. Fulton
Sr., a Cleveland County native, built a respected career as a mortician and became president of the North Carolina Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association. Records indicate Fulton’s Mortuary began business prior to 1900. Fulton was also active in civic life, serving as a town officer and state senator representing Cleveland, Rutherford, Polk, McDowell, and Henderson counties. Known for his strong convictions and willingness to stand by them, he was widely respected across the region. His wife, Sarah Salena “Sally” Fulton, was equally devoted to the community. She taught Sunday School at Central Methodist Church for more than fifty years and was active in the Kings Mountain Wom-
en’s Club, the Thursday Afternoon Book Club, and the Colonel Frederick Hambright Chapter of the DAR. Miss Sarah Baker and Horatio Thomas Fulton married on November 30, 1898. To them, two daughters were born. Mrs. N. Fuller McGill and Miss Pearl Fulton, and one son. H. T. Fulton Jr., who is a junior member of the firm of H. T. Fulton & Son, morticians, of Kings Mountain. Also surviving are two brothers. Will and Charlie Fulton and one sister, Mrs. I.A. McGill. Though the mortuary itself is long gone, the Fulton family’s legacy remains woven into the history of Kings Mountain—through their service, their businesses, and their lasting ties to this community’s families.

KMPD seeks public help with larceny at Imperial Mercantile The Kings Mountain Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying two individuals involved in a larceny at Imperial Mercantile. On February 28, 2026, at approximately 2:20 p.m., a white male and a white female entered the business. After walking around for a period of time, the male and female left walking towards S. Battleground Ave. It was later discovered that the male exited the store
carrying a $60 hat and two pairs of $70 jeans without paying for them. The male appears to have a tattoo on his left inner arm. If you recognize either of these individuals or have any information about this incident, please contact the Kings Mountain Police Department at 704-7340444, ask for Detective Walker, and reference case #KM2026-00417. St. Patrick’s Day in Kings Mountain: History, Heritage, and Celebration By Allyson Parker March 17, 2026, marks the annual celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, observed worldwide in honor of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. While popular stories depict Patrick driving snakes out of Ireland, these tales are highly symbolic, and many historians consider them more legend than historical fact. The Historical Saint Patrick Saint Patrick was not originally Irish. Historians believe he was born in Roman Britain in the late fourth century, around A.D. 385. When Patrick was about sixteen years old, he was captured by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave. He spent roughly six years tending sheep, often in isolation. During this difficult period, Patrick later wrote that he turned deeply to prayer and faith, seeking strength and comfort through Christianity. According to his own writings, Patrick eventually escaped captivity and returned to Britain. After receiving religious training, he later chose to return to Ireland as a missionary, arriving around A.D. 432. There he worked to spread Christi-
anity and establish churches among the Irish people. Patrick is traditionally believed to have died on March 17, around A.D. 461. That date eventually became the feast day honoring his life, now celebrated worldwide as St. Patrick’s Day. Many popular stories about Patrick—including the famous tale of driving snakes out of Ireland— are considered symbolic by historians. Ireland is not known to have had native snakes after the Ice Age, so the story is often interpreted as a legend representing the decline of pagan beliefs as Christianity spread. From Feast Day to Global Celebration The feast day honoring Patrick began in early 17th-century Ireland and was formally recognized by the Catholic Church in 1631. One of the earliest recorded St. Patrick’s Day celebrations occurred in St. Augustine in 1601, when Irish soldiers serving the Spanish colony marched in celebration of their heritage. Over time, the day grew into a broader cultural observance that cel-

chopped spinach, thawed 2 cups ricotta, softened 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated (divided), plus extra to serve 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and minced 2 eggs, lightly beaten Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 3 3⁄4 cups marinara or spaghetti sauce Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook per package directions until al dente. Rinse pasta in cold water to stop cooking process, drain well. Squeeze spinach dry. Transfer spinach to large bowl. Add ricotta,
1⁄2 cup Parmesan, garlic, and beaten eggs to bowl. Season with salt and pepper, mix to blend. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spoon 1⁄2 cup marinara sauce evenly over bottom of 9x13 baking dish. Fill each pasta shell with spinach mixture. Place shells, filling side up, in baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining 1⁄2 cup Parmesan. Cover loosely with foil, bake until heated through, about 30 minutes. Spoon remaining sauce over shells. Garnish with Parmesan cheese, if desired, and serve.

The event was made possible by a large group of volunteers and local area sponsors to make this event a success. With 148 boats in the water, and prizes for biggest catch and weigh in awarded for the top 30 catches, the
event raised $47,000.00 for Cleveland County SONC. This funding will support state competition travel costs, uniform updates and sporting equipment needs for our athletes. A special Thanks to Rick Peace and Eaton Corporation for planning and continuous work to make this fundraiser possible. Mountaineers, AKA Road Warriors, going to state championship game Once a Mountaineer always a Mountaineer, but a more fitting name recently has been the Kings Mountain Road Warriors. Andrew Fann and his varsity basketball team have caught fire in the post-season and will be going to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem Thursday at 7:30pm to battle Northern Nash for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championship. Kings Mountain will go into the game as an underdog to a Northen Nash team with a 24-3 record. The Mountaineers, who went 10-12 during the regular season, have now posted impressive 6A playoff victories over St. Stephens 67-44, fifth-ranked Freedom, 65-58, fourth-ranked
TC Roberson 63-61 and topranked Ben L. Smith 69-68 The Mountaineers, with four sophomores and one junior in the starting lineup, led all the way to win the Western Regional’s 68-61 over a Charlotte Catholic team that wore them out in an early season non-conference game. “We played our home games at the Middle School,” noted coach Fann, “because the KMHS gym was undergoing a major fixer-upper. “Freedom was a five-seed and Asheville a four-seed, so we had to practice on Sunday to get ready for the playoffs. “In the St. Stephens game we led all the way,” he said. “The turning point was the third quarter against Ben L. Smith. We were down nine points against the number one
ranked team in the third quarter to go up 12 in the fourth. We had some fouls but held on. “The third quarter turned everything around,” he noted. “We lost to Catholic by 18 in the regular season to play them totally different. That was the best game we had. ‘They were strong and had a seven-footer. Handling them, we knew we were capable of beating anybody. They had good size. “The last time Kings Mountain made it this far was in 1990,” Fann noted. “They made it to the Regional finals. Larry Sipe was the coach and he talked to our boys before we played Catholic. We had five wins in nine days. I am extremely proud of the kids. They really wanted this.”

Mountaineers beat West Lincoln 13-3 The Kings Mountain Mountaineers easily defeated West Lincoln on Wednesday, 13-3. A play put Kings Mountain on the board in the top of the first inning. Landon Sain grounded into a fielder’s choice, which helped West Lincoln tie the game at one in the bottom of the first. In the top of the third, the Mountaineers broke the tie when KJ Bell doubled, scoring two runs. A single by Mason Wright followed to extend the lead to 4-1. The Mountaineers scored five runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning. Jordan Buckner doubled, scoring two runs, KJ Bell singled, scoring one run, Aiden Smith was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, and an error scored one run. Wesley Turner earned the win for Kings Mountain. The starting pitcher allowed five hits and three runs (zero earned) over five innings, striking out six and walking two. Jaxson Futrell took the loss for West Lincoln. He went one-third of an inning, giving up seven runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking one. Hayes Kiser started the game for West Lincoln. He allowed one hit and one run over two and two-thirds innings, striking out four and walking none. Gavyn Manion collected the save. Kings Mountain tallied 13 hits. KJ Bell and Jordan Buckner were tough to handle backto-back in the lineup, as each drove in three runs. Mason Wright went 3-for-3 to lead the Mountaineers. Luke Heavner collected two hits in three at bats and stole two bases. Kings Mountain had four stolen bases. Ryder Dellinger and Kayden Smith were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for West Lincoln.

KM girls get in the win column By Jimmy Black After dropping their season opener to the Weddington Warriors, the Kings Mountain girls’ softball team got in the win column last Tuesday evening with a big 14 to nothing blowout of the home standing East Gaston Warriors. The Lady Mountaineers now stand at 1 win and 1 loss on the young season.
Senior Maddie Huffman was once again dominant on the mound. Huffman pitched a complete-game no-hitter while allowing only two walks in the contest. Huffman also struck out 15 of the 20 batters that she faced. The Lady Mountaineers had 12 hits in the ball game. They were led on offense by Senior Kayla McSwain who had three hits. Desiree
Greene and Anna Wooten both had two hits. Ezra Lynn also chipped in with four RBI’s in the game that was called after six innings. Four other Kings Mountain players had 2 RBI’s on the night. The Lady Mountaineers hosted the Hunter Huss Huskies last night, and they will also be home to the Crest Chargers on Friday night at 5:30 pm.

CCC Women’s Basketball wins Region 10 DII Championship On Saturday, March 7, Cleveland Community College’s women’s basketball team captured the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Region 10 Championship with a victory over the Fayetteville Technical Community College Trojans. “This championship is a reflection of the work these players put in when nobody was watching,” said Head Coach Ford “Scooter” Lawrence. “They earned this moment, and I couldn’t be prouder of how they represented our program.” With the win, the Yetis advance to the NJCAA Division II Women’s Basket-
ball National Tournament, scheduled for March 16–21 at the Tarlton Complex on the campus of Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory. The Yetis entered the regional tournament with strong momentum after closing the regular season with three consecutive wins. They opened tournament play on Thursday, March 5 with a decisive 81–57 victory over Wake Technical Community College, then followed with a 62–46 win against Brunswick Community College on Friday to secure their place in Saturday’s championship matchup. The team completed the
regular season and conference tournament with an impressive overall record of 25–6 and a conference record of 16–4, including a remarkable 12-game home winning streak. “From day one, our goal was to build a program that competes the right way every game,” Lawrence said. “This season showed the growth, toughness, and belief our players have in each other, and that’s what made this run special.” The championship marks another milestone for the women’s basketball program. The Yetis first entered the national rankings in week three of the regular season at No. 24 and re-

mained in the NJCAA Top 25 for eight consecutive weeks. During that stretch, the team climbed as high as No. 21 and ultimately finished the regular season ranked No. 21 nationally. As the women’s basketball team prepares to compete on the national stage, the CCC community celebrates their achievement and prepares to cheer them on as they continue to represent the college with pride and excellence. What Medicare Won’t Pay For in 2026
Dear Savvy Senior, To avoid any future health care surprises, can you tell me what original Medicare doesn’t cover in 2026? New Beneficiary
Most dental care: Routine dental care including checkups, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, root canals, tooth extractions and dentures are not covered by original Medicare.
Dear Beneficiary, It a great question. While original Medicare (Part A and B) covers a wide array of health care services after you turn 65, it doesn’t cover everything.
Routine vision care: Medicare does not cover routine eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses (except following cataract surgery), but tests, treatments and surgeries for medical eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration are covered.
If you need or want certain services that aren’t covered, you’ll have to pay for them yourself unless you have other insurance, or you enroll in a Medicare Advantage health plan, which may provide some additional benefits. Here’s a look at some commonly needed medical services that original Medicare doesn’t pick up the tab for.
Hearing aids: Original Medicare will not pay for hearing exams or hearing aids but may cover a hearing and balance exam if your doctor determines it’s necessary. Prescription drugs: Medicare (Part A and B) doesn’t provide coverage for outpatient prescription
drugs, but you can buy a separate Part D prescription-drug policy that does.
Alternative medicine: Acupuncture (except to treat low back pain), chiropractic services (except to correct a vertebral subluxation of the spine), and other types of alternative or complementary care are not covered by Medicare. Cosmetic surgery: Most cosmetic procedures are not covered, however, if the surgery is due to an injury or deformity, it might pay. For example, Medicare will cover a breast prosthesis for breast cancer survivors. Foot care: Medicare does not cover most routine foot care, like the cutting or removing of corns, calluses and toenails. But they do cover medically necessary podiatrist ser-
vices for foot problems like hammertoes, bunion and heel spurs, along with exams, treatments and therapeutic shoes or inserts if you have diabetic foot problems. Long-term care: Nursing home care and assisted living facilities are not covered by Medicare. But Medicare will help pay up to 100 days of skilled nursing or rehabilitation care immediately following a hospital stay of three or more days.
Personal home care: If you need to hire help for bathing, dressing or getting out of bed, Medicare typically won’t cover these costs either, unless you are homebound and are also receiving skilled nursing care. Housekeeping services, such as shopping, meal preparation and cleaning are not covered either unless
you are receiving hospice care.

Adult diapers: Medicare does not cover the cost of adult diapers or other incontinence supplies. These items are considered to be for personal hygiene rather than medical treatment.
