City Councilmen swearing-in Tuesday KMPD TOY ROOM - The Kings Mountain Police Department Training Room is nearly full of Christmas bikes and toys for needy children and on Wednesday police will shop for new clothing for some families thanks to the donations from citizens. From left, Lt. Chris Moore, Cpl. Greg McKinney, Cpl. Paul Alexander, Administrative Assistant Landon Hulsey, Jon Bradley, sales manager, and Dan Flanagan, sales associate, both of Campers Inn RV which donated bikes, Cpl. Lance Hamrick and Assistant Police Chief Capt. Lisa Proctor.
Christmas for kids at KMPD Toy Room It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the Kings Mountain Police Department Training Room. Thanks to Campers Inn RV who conducted a successful bike ride last weekend in spite of the first winter snow fall in the area. Some areas of the county received more than a dusting of the white stuff. The Waco area received 4-5 inches of snow, according to police, but both police and Campers Inn pronounced the joint weekend event successful. Murphey’s Toy Run, an-
other successful toy drive led by John Murphey, donated toys to KMPD as well as for Masonic charities. “We are most appreciative of Campers Inn RV and Murpheys Toy Run for helping us pack this room to help needy children,’’ said Cpl. Paul Alexander. In addition to bikes, there are dolls, games, footballs and basketballs, and every kind of toy that will delight a child on Christmas morning. In addition, those receiving bikes will also get a helmet presented by the police de-
partment through a recent grant. Today police will “shop with a Cop” for new clothing for needy children thanks to donations by Kings Mountain area citizens. Police play Santa every year as do Campers Inn RV and Murphey’s Toy Run. A total of 85 needy children are on Santa’s list but Alexander says there will be more. He expects Santa’s list will grow to more than 100 next week as police begin the distribution of the toys.

SANTA AND MRS. CLAUS - Santa and Mrs. Claus delighted over 100 children at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum Saturday. Bethlehem Village is the place to be Experience Christmas in a new and exciting way at Bethlehem Village on Stony Point Road this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 15 and Dec. 16 from 6-9 p.m. and also on Friday, Dec. 22 and Saturday, Dec.23 from 6-9 p.m. Rather than a traditional live Nativity, the members of David Baptist Church have built an entire village
or at least the market place of ancient Bethlehem. They cleared out a large section of land near the church and visitors who stroll through the village can visit the Inn and crib, the baker’s tent, a potter’s workshop and carpenter’s workplace. Visitors can speak with a scribe at his own workplace and kids can learn to write some Hebrew. While
touring the Village visitors can talk with an artist and get their portraits done. Outside the city walls, there will be a bonfire with seating to enjoy marshmallows, popcorn and hot chocolate. Bethlehem Village is the place to be, according to Youth Pastor Robert Craig who says everyone is welcome.
Some snow accidents on bridges, roads While snow did not accumulate on streets, police reported several accidents occurring on slick roads and bridges.

Grady and Katie Costner are pictured in the early years decorating their home and properties for Christmas. The superb workmanship of Mr. Costner in the creation of what neighbors called a “mini McAdenville’’ drew crowds from near and far to Kings Mountain and the Midpines community. File Photo
Christmas in Midpines Memorial to Costner The Christmas lights are burning brightly this holiday season in Midpines for the last time. As a memorial to his father, Grady Costner, Charles Costner has turned the switch on thousands of lights and decoration to the delight of children and adults who marvel at the decorations made by the late Grady Costner. Visiting this Christmas showplace has become
a holiday tradition in Kings Mountain for more than 20 years. Grady retired from his floor covering business and went to work almost full time in a veritable Santa’s workshop in the back of his house in Midpines creating unique Christmas decorations from ¼ inch to 3/8-inch steel rods, creating a new piece every year. He worked on decorations year-round
and his wife, the late Katie Costner, put up the lights. The Costner front yard and back yard and land across the road from the house is a winter wonderland complete with all the trimmings of Christmas and the nostalgic characters, animals, a merry go round, giraffes, dolphins, trees, etc. Charles Costner has added one new piece this See COSTNER, Page 7A
