KMPD Toy Drive underway Largest spec building Kings Mountain Police Department is now accepting toy donations for the 2021 Christmas year.

New and unwrapped toys for children 13 and under, as well as monetary donations, are welcome until

By Loretta Cozart The Keith Corporation begins construction this month on a speculative industrial building of nearly 1.3 million square feet in Kings Mountain Corporate Center on Canterbury Road. It is the largest spec building in Cleveland County, North Carolina, and the southeast.

Work begins at the site by mid-December, with crews working on erosion

control and preparing the land for the upcoming construction.

Kings Mountain Corporate Center is a 164-acre, master-planned, business park in Kings Mountain.

The business park has extensive I-85 frontage with access to the interstate by two interchanges. With Charlotte Douglas International Airport just 26 miles away via I-85, the location is ideal for many large companies.

“We appreciate City of Kings Mountain’s and Gaston County’s incentive grants, which will help draw potential tenants to this property,” said Justin Curis, Vice President, Industrial Development for The Keith Corporation.

“Our intention for this property is for one company to occupy. We anticipate completion at the end of 2022, with a new tenant operational during the first quarter of 2023.”

John O. Van Dyke KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – John O. Van Dyke, 86, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on December 1, 2021 at Testa Family Hospice House in Kings Mountain, NC. He was born in Cleveland Co, NC, to the late Robert R. Van Dyke and Ollie Padgett Van Dyke. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Marshall Van Dyke.

John was employed for over 40 years as a lab analyst with Foote Mineral Co, Kings Mtn. and a member of El Bethel United Methodist Church, formerly serving as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Lay Speaker, and Training Union Director. He served in the United States Army after World War II in the Peace Keeping Force in Germany. John was a wonderful husband, father and friend who was always willing to help anyone in need.

He is survived by his wife: Joyce Redding Van Dyke, Kings Mtn. NC; daughter: Roberta J. Van Dyke, Kings Mtn. NC; special family friends: Andy De Bruler and Bobby and Cindy Phillips .

Funeral service was held at El Bethel United Methodist Church on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. Rev. Julie Roberts and Rev. Bruce Hobson, officiated.

Kathy Elaine Hannon

KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Kathy Elaine Hannon, 72, of Kings Mountain passed away December 1, 2021, at Atrium Health Cleveland, Shelby.

She was born May 27, 1949, in Cleveland County, daughter of the late Mereda Boyce Hannon and Katherine Blackwell Hannon.

Kathy loved her dolls and stuffed animals.

She will be missed by ev-

A graveside service was held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 4, 2021, at Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain, officiated by Pastor Barry Philbeck.

Kathy is survived by her brother, Mike Hannon and wife Phyllis; nephew, Michael Hannon (Amy); niece, April Wagenknecht; caregivers, Joye and Doug Crawford.

Thelma Owens KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Thelma Eubanks Owens, 91, died Wednesday, December 2, 2021 at Alexandria Place of Gastonia.

A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Hullender Eubanks.

Thelma was a loving mother and grandmother who was a member of Pathway Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Herman Sprouse, Albany McKeehan, and Carl Owens; son, William Sprouse; grandson, Dreighton Sprouse; and great granddaughter, Rosa Lee Sprouse.

She is survived by her sons, Arthur Sprouse and wife Genetta of Bessemer City and Dennis Sprouse and wife Becky of Clover, SC; daughter, Renee Jackson of Fort Mill, SC; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and cat, Sue-Sue. A graveside service was held at 2PM, on Tuesday December 7, 2021, in Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis Harmon officiating.

William Ashmore Tinsley

William Ashmore Tinsley (96) of Leeś Summit, MO passed away Wednesday, December 1 at Ignite Hospice Center in Blue Springs, MO. Bill lived his adult life in Kings Mountain, NC until 2017 when he moved to Missouri to live with his son Kevin.

Bill met and married

Peggy Dixon, daughter of Kelly and Blanche Patterson Dixon of Kings Mountain, where they settled in to live their married life in the town they both loved. Bill and Peggy would go on to adopt their only child, Kevin Dixon Tinsley in 1959.

As a man, father, grandfather, and friend Bill lived his life with quiet humility and courage. A Navy veteran of World War II, Bill loved raising his son and being around his grandsons.

Survivors include his son Kevin, a daughter-in-law Charlotte Rose, four grandsons - Kelly Dixon Tinsley, Kevin Philip Tinsley, Wiliam Ashmore Tinsley II and Timothy Patrick Tinsley, a great-grandson Cohen Tinsley and great-granddaughters Ember and Scarlet Tinsley.

Extended family survivors include Lane Dixon, brother-inlaw, sister-in-laws Dot Dixon, Marilyn Dixon Hamrick, and Becky Dixon Patterson, plus several nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.

As his family, we will never again watch the South Carolina Gamecocks (Billś Alma Mater) without our hearts being just a bit saddened to not have him there.

Whether it be a plate of nachos or a batch of chicken wings, he was always ready to watch a weekend of ball.

So many things about him will be missed, especially his one-of-a-kind smile, his gentle heart, and his one-liner wit. May God rest his blessed soul.

Services were held on Tuesday, December 7 at Kings Mountain Central United Methodist Church.

Mary Ruth Goforth STANLEY, NC – Mary Ruth Goforth, 81, formerly of Charlotte, NC, passed away on November 30, 2021 at Stanley Total Living in Stanley, NC. She was born in Cleveland County, NC, and was preceded in death by her father, Claude Edwards and her mother, Evelyn Allen Hill.

Mary was also preceded in death by her second husband, Charles Goforth Jr, and her siblings, Mike Edwards and Pat Edwards.

She was a former member of Northside Baptist Church in Charlotte. Mary worked in the nursery business for many years and loved being outdoors, working in the yard, and growing beautiful flowers. She enjoyed staying active, cross stitching, quilting, working sudoku, and reading.

Mary enjoyed listening to Christian music and spending time with her loved ones.

She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother whose love and guidance will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.

James Michael Black Jr On Tuesday, December 17, 2019, a memorial service, graveside service and Celebration of Life reception was held for Fugitive Recovery Agent James Michael Black Jr. who was killed in the line of duty. Originally from Kings Mountain, NC he resided with his family in Lake Elsinore, CA. The funeral services were held at the St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Wildomar CA. and at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside CA. Jamie was preceded in death by his father James Michael Black of Maiden NC; his paternal grandparents Joseph and Lucille Black of Bessemer City and his maternal grandparents Jonas Leroy and Clara Lee McCraw of Kings Mountain, He was also preceded in death by his stepfather David Keith Pendleton who instilled in him his lifelong love for the Marines.

Jamie, 42, died after being shot by a federal fugitive and career criminal whom Jamie was attempting to apprehend on the evening of December 3, 2019 in San Moreno CA. The fugitive then became the subject of a manhunt by the San Bernardino and Riverside Sheriff’s Departments who, jointly, located and killed the fugitive in a shootout less than 48 hours later in San Bernardino.

He is remembered as a devoted family man who was outgoing and compassionate, as well as a role model and mentor to many of the fugitive recovery agents that worked under his supervision. His warm and friendly southern personality would shine through when he often reminded his friends, “I appreciate you.”

Black attended Cleveland Tech for a short time after graduating from Kings Mountain High School but was recommended to IBM by an instructor and after graduating from the International School of Business in Chicago, became the youngest IBM employee on the East coast. He stayed with them for three years but then joined the Marines so he could jump out of airplanes.

He started his career as an enlisted serviceman in the Air Intelligence branch of the U.S. Marine Corps and progressed to a commissioned officer after earning his Mas-

ters in Criminal Justice. His first command was in LA in the aftermath of Katrina. He earned the respect and devotion of his men there by finding big screen TVs, copes of current movies and meals from Outback for his guys during their down time. They were the envy of all military servicemen in that area. Jamie could never do enough for the people he cared for.

After 14 years and multiple deployments to Iraq as an Intelligence Operations Officer he resigned his commission and went on to become a private contractor in Afghanistan. He commanded one quarter of the countries civilian forces for three years and was the youngest commander in the country. James then returned to Southern California and using the skills and certifications he acquired while serving our country, he began working as a Fugitive Recovery Agent for the Federal government and licensed private investigator, ultimately founding and supervising the largest independent bail fugitive recovery team in California, the U.S. Fugitive Service International (Black Umbrella Group) located in Lake Elsinore, CA. He is survived by the only woman he ever loved, his wife Michelle Vasquez Black; his five children Austin Black (Samira), James Black III, Ashlynn Black, Logan Black and Aleena Black. He is also survived by his two sisters, Donna Cantrell (Ronald) Short of Grover, and Tanya Storm of Bellingham, WA and his brothers Joseph(Amanda) Black and Brian Black as well as his stepmother Rita Black of Maiden and his much loved stepfather Robert Moses. Also left to barely survive his passing is his mother, Teresa McCraw Moses.

Her son lived and died a hero. His funeral was no exception to the larger than life he lived. There were sheriff cars leading the procession down a major highway while motorcycle cops shut down the exits and held back thousands of cars so Jamie could go by. There were flags flying on the police bikes and cars and the motorcycle honor guard from the Marines led his casket with their own flags. There were so many cars in the procession they had to brought into the cemetery in two directions to get them all parked. At the beautiful but stark military cemetery where his spot is there were bagpipes played and guns fired and long walks following behind his casket through cordons of honor guards and marines.

The legacy her son left is huge, his business thrives, the home he left for his family is beautiful, and all his children are blessed with his intelligence and sweet disposition.

He was 42 when he went left us but to his mom he is still her little boy. The one she caught jumping off the back of the trailer in his batman costume one day when she was returning home from work, the little boy that constantly amazed and delighted her with an imagination like no one else she ever knew. He was the child that went to the ER so many times because he thought he could do everything. His mom spent countless hours at the school houses because his personality and his intelligence led him into situations other kids wouldn’t even think about. All so he could become the man he was. He was a hero to the world and to his family.

He had lost his dad and grandparents by the time he was 15 and it was just the two of them. He was her best friend through the hardest parts of her life. He accepted what could not be changed at a young age and it made him stronger and a lot older than his years. His mom was and still is proud of him even when she was mad at him. She is blessed beyond words to have been the mother of Jamie Black.

She would not trade one minute of that to be released from the grief she lives with. The Lord will hold her hand, keep her strong and walk with her every step till she can be reunited with her child.

NOV. 24: Officer Dee said Summer Nicole Foster, Belmont, operating a 2009 Nissan, traveling East on the US 74 Bypass, left the road and overturned. She was arrested and charged with several traffic and drug violations, according to the officer.

NOV. 26: Officer Warlick said John Ronald Ross, 106 Blair Drive, was backing a 2002 GMC from a parking stall on Shelby Road and hit a 2007 Mitsubishi operated

by Gloria Harper, Autumn Woods Drive, doing $1,500 estimated damage.

NOV. 29: Officer Black cited Mark Wayne Logan of Grover with no liability insurance, driving while license revoked and displaying a revoked registration plate after an accident involving his 2001 HD AND A 2019 Toyota operated by Margaret Ann Howse of Snellville, GA. who reportedly pulled out from the parking lot at Battleground Petroleum Gas Station and failed to yield the right-of-way. Witnesses said Logan, traveling south on NC 161, tried to avoid the collision by slowing and swerving but was unable to do so. Logan was transported

by EMMS to Atrium Health Cleveland for treatment of injuries. Property damage was estimated at $3,800.

said Joshua Haynes, Grover, operating a 2015 Honda, hit a 2017 Nissan operated by Jonathan Laughter, 1418 Merrimont Avenue, on Phifer Road as he was making left turn onto Castlewood Drive. Property damage was estimated at $7,000.

NOV 29: Officer Black said Billy Hawkins, 1004 Woodside Drive, operating a 2013 Chevrolet, rear-ended a 2018 Mitsubishi operated by Lashonda Jones, 111 Wells Street 2, in the parking lot of 105 York Road. Property damage was estimated at $3,000.

DEC. 1: Officer Warlick said Benjamin Maddox Brown, 123 Chestnut Ridge Road, failed to slow his 1998 Ford on NC 216 Alt, Gold Street north toward Mountain Street, resulting in a rear-end collision with a 2011 Nissan operated by Kenneth Dean Smith, 110 Marigold Street which as a result of the first collision collided with a 2007 Buick operated by Beverly Green, Grover. Property damage was estimated at $9,500.

DEC. 1: Officer Cutler said Alex Canady, riding a bike south on NC 161, was transported by Cleveland EMS to Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia with injuries after he was struck by a 2008 Chevrolet operated by Jose Luis Cedillo of Grover who said he did not see the pedestrian.

Officer Price inspected the bike, struck by the vehicle’s right front fender and mirror, and found no evidence with it being equipped with reflectors. Property damage was estimated at $1,200 to the Chevrolet.

Today, I am announcing that I intend to seek re-election for the Office of Sheriff.

It has been an honor and privilege to serve you these last eleven (11) years.

Together with the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office we have made great strides toward making Cleveland County a safer place to live, work, and visit.

Aggressively tackling drug and property crimes has been my goal since day one. These types of crimes touch people on a personal level and cause great harm to the community as a whole. We will continue those efforts every day. As with any journey there is always more to accomplish, and I intend to continue to improve the law enforcement services in Cleveland County as long as I am your Sheriff. I cannot overstate the level of appreciation that I have for each person who has placed their trust in me to be their Sheriff, and I will never take it for granted. I stand firmly on my record and ask that once more you place your trust in me. With your support and vote of confidence, I will continue to make Cleveland County’s safety my top priority.

Christmas Carols As we step into the holiday season, one of my favorite parts of Christmas is the songs.

They bring back fond c h i l d h o o d DANYALE PATTERSON memories of family, friends, and church gatherings which were all filled with food, laughter, and a lot of singing. Music, especially singing, is a great way to express joy. James 5:13 states, “Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.” The good news is you don’t have to sound good to

sing praises to God. King David proclaims in Psalm 98:4, “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises”! One Christmas song – Carol of the Bells – reminds me how much joy music brings us. As we are listening to the song, it feels like we do not have a care in the world. Here are a few of the lyrics: Hark how the bells, Sweet silver bells, All seem to say, Throw cares away Christmas is here, Bringing good cheer, To young and old, Meek and the bold.

Ding dong ding dong That is their song With joyful ring All caroling.

One seems to hear Words of good cheer From everywhere Filling the air.

Did you know that God enjoys singing and music? After all, he is the creator and originator of it.

Zephaniah 3:17 states, “The LORD your God is in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” I often ponder on how much our Heavenly Father loves and delights in his children. He takes pleasure in his peo-

ple. The Lord is full of compassion and tender mercy. His love draws us close and ignites in us a passion to worship him.

In Psalm 150:1-6, King David – a passionate worshiper of God – believed in utilizing all the instruments to praise God including the cymbals. He exclaimed, “Praise ye he Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power. Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness. Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high-sounding cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord.”

PRAY THIS PRAYER: “Lord, you’re so kind and tenderhearted to those who don’t deserve it and so patient with people who fail you!

Your love is like a flooding river overflowing its banks with kindness.

It’s hard to comprehend this love.

It makes me want to sing and give you the praise due unto your name.

Thank you for your great love for me. I appreciate that you sing over me. Lord, I will sing to you songs of worship and adoration. There is no one like you in all the earth. In Jesus’ name I pray – Amen.”

Broad River Genealogy Society hosts Brendan Camp LeGrand on Dec. 12

By Loretta Cozart Broad River Genealogical Society hosts Brendan Camp LeGrand as the guest speaker on Sunday, December 12 at 3 pm. She will share research and stories from her upcoming book “The Road to The River,” the history of Warren Street in Shelby.

She has written documentaries and books of local history, as well as articles for magazines and newspapers and designs and manufactures products for

Brendan Camp LeGrand the art needlecraft, fashion, gifts, and home furnish-

ings markets. She was born and raised in Shelby, and educated at Shelby High School, Gardner-Webb College, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Refreshments to follow the presentation and a drawing for an iPad. Tickets for drawing are $5.00. Broad River Genealogy Society meets at American Legion Post 82 is at 1628 S. Lafayette St. in Shelby. The meeting is open to all persons interested in local history and family lineage.

Christmas’ Past at the museum

Visitors stepped back in time enjoying antique toys, electric trains, historic games, and roaring fires at Kings Mountain Historical Museum on Saturday, December 4.

The historic Barber House was decked out for the holiday season with hearth cooking and firing demonstrations. Events con-

tinued from 10am to 5pm on the museum grounds.

The Carolina Thunder Mugs filled the air with music, as woodworking demonstrations, a revolutionary war reenactment camp, cooking and firing demonstrations brought an earlier time to life for visitors.

The firing demonstrations showed guests the process of loading and fir-

ing Brown-Bess muskets verses hunting rifles. Muskets are loaded faster, thus allowing a soldier to get off more shots in a minute. But hunting rifles allowed the shooter 3-times more accuracy at a greater distance.

The unseasonably warm day made for a pleasant event as children and their families learned more about Christmas’ past for our area’s early settlers.

Christmas bazaars at Big Red’s

By Loretta Cozart Local crafters are participating in Christmas Bazaars around town this holiday season. On December 4, a bazaar was held in the Community Room and on the porch of Big Red’s Café.

A variety of items were offered, from custom t-shirts,

sweaters, sweatshirts, plates, travel mugs, blankets, signs, decorations, and many other items for everyone on your Christmas list. Due to Christmas festivities, the event closed at 1 pm.

Organizer Angie Camp works in Kings Mountain and is a crafter herself.

“Most of our crafters are

from the area: Kings Mountain, Shelby, Grover, Cherryville, and Gastonia. The bazaar helps these crafters and offers unique items for shoppers looking for that special Christmas gift. Our next event will be December 18 from 9am to 5pm, and we welcome everyone to stop by to see us.”

BROWN RICE Bobbie Childers 1 cup rice 1 cup water 1 can cream of onion soup 1 can beef broth ½ stick margarine Mix and pour in pan and bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes.

PINEAPPLE CREAM PIE Wilma Dellinger 1 can Eagle Brand sweetened milk 1/3 cup lemon juice 1 (8 oz.) cream cheese 1 large Cool Whip 1 large can well-drained pineapple 2 pie crusts, baked or graham cracker crusts Mix the sweetened milk, lemon juice and cream cheese together Then add the Cool Whip and the pineapple. Mix well and pour into 2 pie shells already baked and cooled or graham cracker crust. Refrigerate.

PUMPKIN PECAN PIE Leona Bess 4 slightly beaten eggs 2 cups canned pumpkin 1 cup sugar ½ cup dark corn syrup 1 tsp. vanilla

½ tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. salt 1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell 1 cup chopped pecans Combine ingredients except pecans. Pour into pie shell.

Top with pecans. Bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes or until set.

The Good Neighbors Food Pantry will be open Thursday, December 9th from 5:30 – 6:15 pm.

THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN Janie Greene 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 1 cup buttermilk 1 cup self-rising flour 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. Cajun seasoning 1 tsp. seasoned salt Oil for deep frying Cut chicken into strips.

Soak in buttermilk for 20 minutes. Toss flour and seasonings in plastic bag. Put 6 pieces at a time into bag and shake to coat. Put into hot oil and fry until brown.

Drain well on paper towels.

This is good served with a honey mustard dip.

MAYONNAISE MUFFINS Mrs. Paul Hoyle 1 cup self-rising flour ½ cup milk 2 Tbsp. mayonnaise Stir all ingredients together and fill muffin cups ½ to 2/3 full. Bake at 425 degrees for about 10 minutes or until edge of muffins are brown and tops begin to lightly brown. Makes 7 or 8 biscuits.

Construction continues in KM

By Loretta Cozart Projects impacting the business landscape, and economic development of the community, are making progress toward completion around town. Some projects are almost finished, as others will take up to a year to complete.

Catawba Two Kings Casino will double the size of their current pre-launch facility on Kings Mountain Blvd., near I-85, and should be completed in December.

Benestar Brands, an

international snack foods manufacturer, will create 129 new jobs and has invested $24 million to build their new production facility on Industrial Drive. Completion is slated for the Fall of 2021.

Construction continues at Carolina 85 Logistics Center, located at 300 Woodlake Pkwy, a Class A warehouse is designed to accommodate either a single occupant or multiple users.

Building delivery is set for the first quarter of 2022.

Biscuitville plans to

open in early Spring of 2022. This location features the company’s Biscuitville Fresh Southern® prototype with a dual lane drive thru.

The newest announcement by The Keith Corporation for their 1.3 million sq. ft. spec building, the largest in the Southeast, could bring a major distribution hub to the community. The company currently plans for one company to occupy the building. The delivery on this project is anticipated for December 2022.

Biscuitville, on York Road, plans to open in early Spring 2022.

“Offensively, we have the capability to put up a lot of points behind Saniya Wilson (24 ppg last season) and Khalia King (17 ppg during the first half of last season), and a front court who has worked hard this off-season (Tyasya Bell, Austyn Dixon, CoRey Simpson and Jacie Jarvis),” Coach Nicholas Inman said.

“We have experience, something we haven’t had much of the last two seasons,” he noted. “This season we have three seniors and five juniors, and four of

those juniors have been on varsity since their freshman year and the fifth played varsity as a sophomore.

“Depth will be our weakness. We had some players decide not to play this season, cutting down our bench and rotation to a consistent eight instead of the 11 we thought we would have returning.

Some underclassmen I thought would develop on JV will be seeing varsity action.

“We added (former KMHS standout) Monique Petty to the coaching staff,” Inman said. “She was a big player here graduating in 2014 with over 1,000 points as a forward/center.

She will be working closely with our post players.”

Kings Mountain’s boys lost a pair of games in the final seconds and the girls went 1-1 Friday and Saturday in the Battle of the Mill at Cox Mill. Thirteen teams competed in the showcase in collaboration with the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association.

The KM teams were scheduled to go to RS Central last night and will open Big South Conference play Friday at Hunter Huss. Their first home game is Friday, Dec. 17 against North Gaston.

The Lady Mountaineers defeated Hough Friday before losing to a good Cox Mill team 48-41 Saturday.

The Mountaineers took two very good teams down to the wire before falling to Lincoln Charter 69-68 Friday and Enka 72-71 Saturday.

The leads changed hands numerous times in both contests.

In their loss to Lincoln Charter, the Mountaineers took a lead with 22 seconds remaining on a three-pointer

But, Lincoln Charter’s JJ Moore hit a driving floater and got fouled to tie the game, and then hit a free throw to account for the final margin.

KM had a lob at the buzzer but missed.

After falling to a good Enka team in their season openers, Kings Mountain High’s varsity basketball teams rebounded in a big way Wednesday night with a sweep of county rival Burns in Lawndale.

In the boys game, the Mountaineers played extremely well in the second half to balance their record at 1-1 with an 81-58 victory.

Zeke Cannedy led all scorers with 24 points and Curtis Simpson pulled down 13 rebounds.

The Lady Mountaineers, who fell hard to Enka 60-40 the previous Saturday in the Coaches vs. Cancer Shootout in Asheville, got a good effort from all players to defeat the Lady Bulldogs 40-30. Prior to the Asheville event, the boys and girls teams raised $4,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Khalia King led the scoring with 15 points and also pulled down three rebounds. Catawba College commit Saniya Wilson had her typical all-around game with 13 points, three assists and 12 steals.

The NCHSAA Board of Directors has been hard at work conducting the business of the Association, completing the Winter Meeting Thursday.

Board members engaged in lengthy discussions about the Association’s ongoing talks with the State Board of Education, the status of the NCHSAA Endowment, and the Association’s annual budget. The Board took action on many items during its meeting. Highlights are as follows: --Approved the 20212022 budget, which includes an estimated $1.2 million shortfall. This is the second straight year experiencing a negative annual operating budget, impacting operational and program reserves. The Board felt the Association is currently in a stable financial position and can absorb some expenses for member schools in their ongoing attempts to recover from the impacts of shortened seasons during 20202021 and the COVID-19 pandemic.

-Approved waiving the membership dues for 20212022 only. Schools will still be responsible for the $100 annual school fee for the year. This waiver of membership dues is in addition to the Board’s commitment to take on the catastrophic insurance premiums for all member schools for this year. As a result of HB 91, schools should prepare to reassume responsibility for catastrophic insurance premiums in 2022-2023, which schools must purchase through the Department of Insurance.

YMCA’s 21st Annual Jingle Bell Rockin’ Run draws 400 runners The Kings Mountain Family YMCA’s 21st Annual Jingle Bell Rockin’ Run was held on Saturday, Dec 4 and drew 400 participants back this year. Due to the pandemic, the race was not run last year.

The weather was perfect, and it was a great day of fun, fellowship, and laughter was had by all. Local runners were joined by others from Spartanburg, Hickory, Matthews, and Surfside Beach.

Prepare now for winter weather Winter Weather Preparedness Week is Dec. 5 - 11 and Governor Roy Cooper is encouraging North Carolinians to plan and prepare now, before potentially dangerous winter weather arrives.

“North Carolina’s winter weather can be challenging, and everyone should be prepared for dangerous conditions,” Governor Cooper said. “Make a family emergency plan, update your emergency supply kit and pay attention to weather alerts from trusted sources. These steps will help you survive inclement weather and recover faster from it.”

Meteorologists expect La Niña conditions to last throughout the winter, which means North Carolina is favored to see warmer and drier than normal conditions. However, this does

not mean that wintry precipitation will not develop across the state this winter, leading to icy roads and other hazards.

Governor Cooper urges residents to monitor winter weather conditions and forecasts by listening to local media and paying close attention to winter weather watches, warnings, and advisories. While the criteria for these may vary across North Carolina the premise is the same, so remember: • Winter Storm Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for either heavy snow, sleet, or freezing rain within the next 24-48 hours.

• Winter Storm Warning is issued when confidence is high that a winter storm will cause significant impacts within the next 24 hours.

• Keep fresh batteries on hand for weather radios and flashlights.

• Dress warmly. Wear multiple layers of thin clothing instead of a single layer of thick clothing.

• Properly vent kerosene heaters and ensure any electric generators are operated outside

and away from open windows or doors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Never burn charcoal indoors.

Juvenile Justice enacts new “minimum age” law In North Carolina, a 6-year-old can no longer be seen in juvenile court for grabbing a candy bar from a checkout aisle or for running away from home.

A new law that takes effect today raises the lower age of juvenile jurisdiction from 6 to 10 for most youth and will provide alternatives to taking a vulnerable juvenile to court.

Thanks to recommendations from the Juvenile Jurisdiction Advisory Committee, the efforts of its members, the hard work of the Juvenile Justice section, bi-partisan support in the legislature, and Gov. Roy Cooper’s leadership, North Carolina will no longer have the youngest minimum age of juvenile jurisdiction due to Senate

Bill 207.

An 8- or 9-year-old who either has a prior court judgement (adjudication) of delinquency or who commits a felony A through G offense will remain under juvenile jurisdiction. The age of juvenile jurisdiction for all undisciplined offenses (e.g., truancy, runaways and other status offenses) is now 10.

“These changes are research-based and cost-beneficial. But, most importantly, it’s the right thing to do,” said Deputy Secretary for Juvenile Justice William Lassiter.

“North Carolina has a rich history of juvenile justice reform that led to massive reductions in juvenile crime and set the stage for continued reforms like

raising the upper age and lower age of juvenile jurisdiction.”

For 6- to 15-year-olds, the North Carolina juvenile delinquency rate decreased from 27.55 in 2010 to 12.05 per 1,000 youth in 2020, the lowest juvenile delinquency rate on record. Over the past decade (2010-2019), detention center admissions declined 63% and youth development center commitments decreased 59%.

Equipped with coloring books and crayons, juvenile court counselors previously sought to occupy the minds of younger children while in the courtroom to reinforce appropriate behavior during court hearings. Now, armed with vulnerable juvenile consul-

tations, the power of service referrals, screenings, assessments, community resources, and programming, juvenile court counselors can offer services to the young child and the parent without exposing that young child to court processes they do not understand.

S207/S.L. 2021-123 updates G.S. 7B-2502 regarding a court’s authority to order a comprehensive clinical/mental health assessment for adjudicated delinquent youth with suspected mental illness (i.e., severe emotional disturbance), developmental disability, or intellectual disability prior to entering a disposition/consequence.

A multi-system Care Review Team may be created

for these youth who are subject to a youth development center disposition or placement in a Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility to recommend a plan for care.

“This group will determine what is the best placement for the youth,” said Juvenile Justice Director of Clinical Services and Programs Peter Kuhns. “I expect this part of the law will highlight some of the mental health issues we have in the state, such as the need for more mental health resources, the need for alternatives to commitment, and the need to invest resources to meet the needs.”

S207/S.L. 2021-123 also allows for prosecutorial discretion in whether

to transfer a 16- or 17-year old to superior court for a felony class D, E, F, or G offense.

“Prosecutorial discretion allows prosecutors to decide what is more appropriate for a kid who commits D-G felonies,” said JJAC member and chief district court judge for New Hanover and Pender counties Judge J.H. Corpening, II. Gov. Cooper signed the bill on Aug. 30, and Juvenile Justice provided informational sessions to community stakeholders and trained Juvenile Justice staff on the legislative changes. It also provided training to mental health providers and others involved in juvenile justice.

However, there are other factors you need to take into account to help you make a good decision, like your health and family longevity, whether you plan to work in retirement, along with

spousal and survivor benefits.

To help you weigh your claiming strategies, you need to know that Social Security Administration claims specialists are not trained or authorized to give you personal advice on when you should start drawing your benefits. They can only provide you information on how the system works under different circumstances. To get advice you’ll need to turn to other sources.

Online Tools Your first step in getting Social Security claiming strategy advice is to go to SSA.gov/myaccount to get your personalized statement that estimates what your retirement benefits will be at ages 62 through 70.

These estimates are based on your yearly earnings that are also listed on your report.

Once you get your estimates for both you and your wife, there are a number online Social Security strategy calculators you can turn to that can compare your options so you can make an informed decision.

The best one that’s completely free to use is Open Social Security (OpenSocialSecurity.com), which runs the math for each possible claiming age (or, if you’re married, each possible combination of claiming ages) and reports back, telling you which strategy is expected to provide the most total spendable dollars over your lifetime.

But if you want a more thorough analysis consider fee-based calculators like Maximize My Social Security (MaximizeMySocialSecurity. com) or Social Security Solutions (SocialSecuritySolutions.com).

Both of these tools, which are particularly helpful to married couples as well as divorced or widowed persons, will run what-if scenarios based on your circumstances and show how different filing strategies affect the total payout over the same time frame.

Maximize My Social Security’s web-based service costs $40 per year for a household, while Social Security Solutions offers several levels of

web-based and personalized phone advice ranging from $20 to $250.

In-Person Advice You may also be able to get help through a financial planner. Look for someone who is a fee-only certified financial planner (CFP) that charges on an hourly basis and has experience in Social Security analysis.

GCPD identifies victim in 1979 homicide Gaston County Police, with the assistance of the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), has identified the victim in a 1979 homicide.

On October 6, 1979, the Gaston County Police Department responded to a call of a found body. The victim had been left in a wooded area near Horseshoe Bend Beach Road which located in the northeastern portion of Gaston County. The victim had been placed in this area for some time before being located. At that point in time, there was no identification and no way to identify the body. All investigators knew was the victim was believed to be a male who was approximately 30 to 60 years old.

The Gaston County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit reviewed the case in 2020. Detectives worked with NamUs to process DNA from the skeletal remains that were collected in 1979. NamUs utilized the Florida Institute of Forensic Anthropology and Applied Science at the University of South Florida to create a DNA profile and artist rendition of the victim. That artist rendition is included in this

press release.

Through the DNA profile, the victim was identified as James Harold Smith of Charlotte, NC. Detectives spoke with Mr. Smith’s family and determined he was of Lumbee Indian descent.

Gaston County Police Detectives discovered the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department had taken a missing person’s report in 2014 for Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was 33 years old at the time of his disappearance. He was last seen leaving a court hearing in Charlotte. CMPD created the attached flier for Mr. Smith in 2014.

The Gaston County Police are requesting the public’s help with this investigation.

Anyone with information surrounding the disappearance/homicide of Mr. Smith is encouraged to call Gaston County Police Detective B. Dalton at 704-866-3320 or Crimestoppers at 704-8618000. A monetary reward of up to $1000 is available to anyone who provides information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect(s) in this case.

Gaston County Police have charged Trevor Lee Iman, 21, of 373 Cape Breton Trail, Gastonia, with three felony counts of 2nd degree sexual exploitation of a child and three felony counts of 3rd degree sexual exploitation of a child.

The charges are the result of an investigation started after a cybercrime tip was received from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) in November. In March, County Police detectives charged Iman with twelve felonies related to the possession of child pornography. The previous charges and investigation were also the result of a cybertip received through the ICAC Task Force.

On December 3, County Police served a search warrant at Iman’s residence and seized electronic devices belonging to him. Iman was

As the number of aging Americans increases, so too will the incidences of elder abuse which can include physical, sexual, emotional, and financial abuse, as well as neglect.

Sadly, family members and caretakers are often the individuals who commit elder abuse. That is why it is important for all of us to be on alert for signs of abuse.

Those who are most vulnerable to elder abuse are often physically frail, suffer from memory loss or other communications problems, and/or are isolated, making it difficult to report abuses. Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

Local fire departments and law enforcement officers are assisting the N.C. Forest Service in enforcing the burn ban.
