“Christmas KM” Festival to take over Patriots Park

Santa Claus is coming to Town!

The Jolly Old Elf from the North Pole will pay a visit to Kings Mountain on December 2 for the Christmas wKings Mountain Parade. Afterward, Santa will

be available in his very own workshop, arriving at 5:30 pm. Santa’s workshop is located at Patriots Park.

It’s time to ring in the holiday season, and this year, there is no better place to celebrate than in Downtown Kings Mountain with a “Christmas Kings Mountain” Festival featuring amazing Christmas lights, interactive experiences, and free festive fun for the entire family.

Holly Jolly hayrides and North Pole Express carriage rides (registration required for carriage rides) will roll Downtown bringing even more Christmas cheer.

The City of Kings Mountain will also welcome Kings Highway and Heaven Bound Trio. This special Christmas show will begin at 6:00 pm.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! Join us as the City of Kings Mountain announces the “Christmas Kings Mountain” parade, presented by CaroMont Health, on December 2.

The parade will begin at 3:00 pm on West King Street near First Baptist Church, proceed down West King Street, turning on South Railroad Avenue to Patriots Park.

Over 100 entries are expected for the parade, including the Kings Mountain High School Marching Mountaineers, the Catawba Shrine Club’s Gator Pa-

trol, Sir Purr and the Carolina Panther Top Cats, the jolly ole elf himself, Santa Claus, and many other surprises. Our 2023 Kings Mountain Lady Mountaineer Volleyball State Champions will serve as our Grand Marshals for this special event.

The Christmas Parade will impact various roads, beginning on King Street (74 Business) at the intersection of Sims Street, east down Kings Street, and then south on Railroad Avenue. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling through Kings Mountain.

Seeing Isn't Believing, Believing Is Seeing...... The sights of Christmas will soon shine in Patriots Park, as the City of Kings Mountain hosts its third annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Wednesday, November 22, at 6 p.m.

This free event will include music from the Patrick Senior Center's Senior Chorus and Vintage Vibe, concessions from Anna's Sweet Treats, Storytime with Mayor Neisler and so much more.

Kick-off the holiday season with friends and family in Patriots Park.

To celebrate their stellar season, the City has named the Kings Mountain Lady Mountaineer High School Volleyball Team and 3A NCHSSA State Champions as the grand marshal for the 2023 Kings Mountain Christmas Parade.

Under the direction of Coach Heather Pasour, the 2023 team finished this season with a 34-1 record overall after winning the Big South Conference Championship KMHS Lady Mountaineer Volleyball team and 3A NCHSSA with a 14-0 record.

The salon is now owned by Owner/Stylist Becky Cain Simmons, who started working after finishing her cosmetology course at Kings Mountain High. Other staff at ScissorSmith Salon include stylist/

nail tech Natalie Newsome and Susan Ramsey and esthetician/massage therapist Olivia Thompson.

1968 Arlene Johnson graduated from Kings Mountain High School and Mrs. Lillian Whitworth’s Cosmetology class. For fifteen years, she worked with various local hairdressers, including Tiara Hair Designs, owned by Shirley Allen; Edie’s Beauty Shop, owned by Edith Lovell; and Scissors & Styles owned by Sandi Rhea Shields.

Larry Jennings Cannon KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Larry Jennings Cannon, 72, of Kings Mountain, NC, passed away on November 15, 2023 at his home.

He was born in Cleveland County, NC, son of the late Ralph Jennings Cannon and Lucille Hambright Cannon and was preceded in death by a sister, Connie Brookins.

John Lewis Etters GASTONIA, NC – John Lewis Etters, 56, of Gastonia, NC, passed away on November 19, 2023 at his home.

Born in Cleveland County, NC, he was the son of Velda Joy Prince Crump and the late Bobby Eugene Etters, Sr. John was known for the company he worked so

faith and attended Christ the King Catholic Mission in Kings Mountain.

He retired from Parker Hannifin where he worked in maintenance for many years. Larry enjoyed staying busy and working with his hands. He could often be found building model planes, tinkering with drones and working with his CNC router. He was a talented mechanic and enjoyed fixing anything he could find to work on.

Larry was an accomplished cook and loved feeding people. He adored family gatherings and spending time with those he loved. He was a dedicated father, loving grandfather and great grandfather, and faithful friend. His wisdom, understanding and love will be cherished by all those who knew him for a lifetime.

He is survived by his sons: Barret Cannon and

By Loretta Cozart Cleveland County Habitat for Humanity is holding partner information sessions on Thursday, December 7, at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Fellowship Hall, 1165 Wyke Road, in Shelby. Sessions provide helpful information about the application process and home ownership. Attendance is not required to apply and does not guarantee acceptance into the program.

By Loretta Cozart Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office released their October statistics. During the month, there were 9,154 calls for service, 178 arrests, 1,200 papers served, including 3350 criminal, 643 civil,

and 207 subpoenas.

One hundred sixty-seven incident reports were handled: 135 were criminal, and 32 were non-criminal.

One hundred and sixteen concealed carry permits were issued.

Narcotics seized were

125,761.7 DU pills, Cocaine 11.337 g, Marijuana 1,047.97 g, Meth 46,055.68 g, and Fentanyl/Heroin 2,160.5 g. The monthly average of inmates handled by the sheriff’s office was 242 males and 50 females.

This year, the Christmas parade will begin at 3:00 pm on West King Street near First Baptist Church, proceed east down King Street, turn-

ing onto South Railroad Avenue toward Patriots Park.

The parade will end at Patriots Park, with all the participants disbanding on Oak Street.

After the parade, visitors to the downtown can move into Patriots Park to enjoy the “Christmas Kings Mountain”

North Pole Express Carriage route will have a new view Carriage rides are back this Christmas season with an all-new view. This year, the North Pole Express Carriage route will begin at Patriots Park on South Cansler Street, turning left on West Mountain Street, left on South Goforth Street, left on West Gold Street, and right back on South Cansler Street.

GATEWAY TRAIL APPRECIATION DINNER – On November 6, the Gateway Trail Appreciation Dinner was held at Trackside Shop downtown Kings Mountain. Anne Elam was honored for being an outstanding committee member. Kirsten Martin from Albemarle Lithium gave a brief update to the group. Clifford’s Army Rescue dogs take people for a hike at the Gateway Trail On November 11, thirty-three of the Clifford's Army Rescue dogs arrived at Kings Mountain Gateway trail for their monthly hike and socialization event. Since January, this event has become one of the most participated in events ever, with more volunteers signing up each month to hike with the CARE doggies. Not only do the humans and dogs get great exercise, but they also

benefit from socialization. The different trails offer choices for energetic or calm dogs, allowing everyone to choose how invigorating they want their hike to be. Once back, most people hang out with the dogs and the people for a bit.

During one of the hikes, a person who was already hiking the trail came by and asked what was going on, and Kirsten Martin shares an update on Albemarle. if she could participate. Dave Allen running for NC House

By Loretta Cozart Kings Mountain city council member Dave Allen announced he is running for the NC House District 111 seat since Speaker Tim Moore announced that he is seeking the 14th US Congressional District seat.

In a Facebook post on November 11, Allen said, “I intend to seek election to this seat to ensure the 111th District continues to have a strong voice in Raleigh.

As a retired state employee and law enforcement leader, owner of multiple businesses, elected local leader, and with a strong emphasis on family, I believe I have the skills to allow me to transition into

this seat and hit the ground running for the 111th and the State of North Carolina.

“I look forward to engaging the citizens of Cleveland and Rutherford Counties through the coming weeks to discuss your ideas,” he shared.

TOYLAND: A Holiday Exhibit at KM Historical Museum November 24 to January 6, 2024!

(Tues.- Sat. from 10am-4pm) This year, Kings Mountain Historical Museum at 100 East Mountain Street in Kings Mountain introduces “TOYLAND: A Holiday Exhibit,” where the museum will be decorated for Christmas, and the cases will be filled with antique toys and games. Admission is free.

Parents and grandparents will enjoy reminiscing with the children about the toys and games of their childhood.

A children’s activity area with stem toys and crafts will also be available. Bring your cameras – this exhibit provides great opportunities for holiday

Golden LEAF hosted its second cohort of Rural Internship Initiative Participants this summer. This program supports Golden LEAF Scholars with professional work experience related to their career field in a rural North Carolina community.

In its two years, more than 60 Golden LEAF Scholars have worked 17,000 hours in various sectors throughout 31 rural counties in the state.

Scholars intern in various settings, including businesses, governmental entities, and nonprofits. Common fields of interest are health care, human

services, government/public administration, engineering, education, and journalism/communication.

Golden LEAF Scholars are responsible for identifying a site to complete their internship. In preparation for the upcoming summer 2024 internship season, Golden LEAF is gathering information from entities interested in hosting an intern next summer. There is no commitment to host, and not all sites may have a match.

This list of interested organizations will be shared with Scholars in the fall of 2023 as a resource to locate an internship opportunity. Students will be responsible for reaching out to sites from this list.

EASY BANANA PUDDING Carolyn Stone 4 or 5 bananas 1 box vanilla wafers 1 can condensed milk 1 (4 oz.) instant vanilla pudding mix 1 ½ c. cold water 1 large container Cool Whip In a bowl, mix the cold water, pudding mix and condensed milk. Add 2 cups of Cool Whip. Spread about 1/3 of this mixture in a bowl. Cover with a layer of vanilla wafers and a layer of bananas. Continue to layer wafers, bananas, and custard to make 3 layers each, ending with custard. Top with remaining Cool Whip.

OVEN-BARBECUED CHICKEN Scottie Yarbro 2 Tbsp. cornstarch ½ cup water ½ cup catsup ¾ cup vinegar ½ cup molasses ½ cup soy sauce 1 clove garlic, mashed 1 frying chicken Blend cornstarch in water in saucepan; add remaining ingredients, except chicken.

Cook over low heat until thickened, stirring. Boil for 1 minute. Brush sauce on chicken Bake at 325 degrees for 1 ½ hours or until tender. Do not baste while cooking.

Yetis women’s volleyball team makes history On August 17, 2023, the Cleveland Community College Yetis made history— again. The women’s volleyball team stepped onto the court at Wake Tech Community College to play its first-ever game.

Head Coach Jamie Wilson had coached winning teams at Crest High School for 17 years, but this would be her first season as a college coach.

She wondered if she would be good enough for the college level, plus she had to learn the art of recruiting, one concern a high school coach doesn’t have. “Recruiting for the first season was hard,” she said.

“Lots of players didn’t want to take a chance on a first-year program. The eight girls who chose to come are very special.”

That group of special players set lofty goals at the beginning of the season. They didn’t

went on to have a 21-12 overall winning season and finished third in the conference’s regular season with an 8-3 record. In postseason play, the team made it to the semifinals of the Region 10 conference where they lost to the reigning national champion Richard

Bland College. The loss was tough, but the team and its coach were already successful.

The players did what they set out to do. They will go down in Yetis history as the first winning volleyball team, and the coach who wasn’t sure she was good enough was

named Region 10 Coach of the Year.

“I was shocked and honored,” said Wilson. “There are some great coaches in Region 10, so to be chosen by them makes it very special, especially because it was my first year coaching college.”

Wilson went on to say that she would not have gotten the award without her team.

“We started as strangers from different places with different personalities, and we became a family.”

Breakfast with Santa was a huge success Kings Mountain families got into the holiday spirit at a special Christmas event at the GFWC NC Kings Mountain Woman's Club’s Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, November 18.

The day started with a delicious breakfast served in the dining room. Then, guests went upstairs for a magical photo session with Santa, captured by a professional photographer.

As little ones picked out gifts for mom and dad in the Elf Closet, the adults relaxed and enjoyed the holiday cheer.

KMHS Class of ’73 celebrates 50th reunion On October 21, at 5 p.m. at the Patrick Senior Center, Kings Mountain High School Class of 1973 held its 50th Class Reunion.

The food was deliciously prepared and served by classmate Chris Johnson and included pork tenderloin and chicken breasts, baked vegetable medley, baked potato, salad, and rolls. Tea, lemonade, and water were served.

The committee members brought a multitude of various desserts. A special cake was designed for the occasion with the Kings Mountain monument and a graduation cap as decorations.

Five stillbirth and neonatal deaths related to Congenital Syphilis The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is issuing a public health alert following five stillbirths or neonatal deaths in babies with congenital syphilis born between Jan. 1, 2023, and Sept. 1, 2023. This alert follows a provider memo issued last week by NCDHHS asking for health care providers’ help to prevent congenital syphilis and reverse the alarming trend.

Previous provider memos from NCDHHS were released Dec. 20, 2022, Nov. 15, 2021, and Nov. 9, 2018.

From 2012 to 2022, there was a 547% increase in reported syphilis cases in North Carolina among women with an associated increase in congenital syphilis infections, from 1 case in 2012 to 57 cases in 2022.

This increase mirrors the national trend as described this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vital Signs: Missed Opportunities for Preventing Congenital Syphilis – United States, 2022 and the increase previously reported by NCDHHS. Congenital syphi-

lis is preventable. If left untreated, syphilis in pregnancy can result in miscarriages, stillbirth and neonatal death, as well as adverse life-long health impacts for the baby such as bone damage, severe anemia, enlarged liver and spleen, jaundice, nerve problems causing blindness or deafness, meningitis, or skin rashes. Public health agencies review each case of congenital syphilis in the state to understand why the infections were not prevented. A review of North Carolina’s 2022 congenital syphilis cases identified the following missed opportunities: • Little to no prenatal care • Missed opportunities to test women during pregnancy, as required by North Carolina’s Public Health law • Inadequate or delayed treatment of the maternal syphilis infection All pregnant women should be screened at least three times during pregnancy. Sexually transmitted infections can still be present even if the exposure was in the past and even if there

Symptom-based testing alone would have missed these infections.

In addition, because many mothers of infants with congenital syphilis had little or no prenatal care, it is important for health care providers to screen pregnant women for syphilis in other settings, such as urgent care or emergency room visits.

Every person deserves to have a healthy pregnancy and baby, and women should be tested throughout their pregnancy to address sexually transmitted infections.

This is one of multiple ongoing efforts by NC-

DHHS to address the increase in syphilis. Other recent initiatives include convening a Southeast Congenital Syphilis Payers Summit to identify policy levers payers can use to address this growing epidemic. NCDHHS will continue efforts to raise awareness and address this issue with a provider education campaign; a public education campaign to spread awareness of syphilis and the importance of testing, so pregnant women and the people who love them have access to information and treatment; and increasing access to syphilis testing by distributing point-of-care tests. Local Apprentices earn top honors in Statewide Competition Two apprentices in the Apprenticeship Cleveland program at Cleveland Community College showed off their skills at the North Carolina State Fair in October. Maddox Brown and Ben Ledbetter competed in the HVAC-R competition hosted by the North Carolina Community College System and Apprenticeship NC. Brown, an apprentice with Shelby Heating and Air, finished third in the competition. Ledbetter, an apprentice with Miller & Condrey HVAC/Refrigeration, finished sixth.

“The state fair was a great chance for me to show my skills and show off how good our college’s program is,” said Brown. “I

enjoyed getting to show off the success of the apprenticeship program at Cleveland Community College.

The state fair is something that I think every apprentice at Cleveland should want to go and compete in.”

Ledbetter thanked his employer and CCC for the apprenticeship opportunity.

“The state fair competition was a good chance to demonstrate what I have learned in class as well as in the field,” he said.

“I thought it was a very worthwhile experience and I was grateful and honored to represent my company and school in the competition.”

Gardner-Webb’s Annual Festival of Lights Begins Celebration of Christmas Gardner-Webb’s annual program to welcome the Christmas season—Festival of Lights—will be celebrated on Nov. 30, which coincides with the University’s celebration of Founders Day. A beloved campus and community Christmas tradition since 1984, Festival of Lights will be held at 7 p.m. in Dover Theatre. Featuring performances by GWU music groups, the program includes the reading of the Christmas story and carol singing.

“This year’s celebration of Festival of Lights will be a delight,” shared Dr. Joshua Cheney, director of

How Seniors Can Get Help Paying for Everyday Needs Dear Savvy Senior, What types of programs are available to help seniors struggling with their everyday bills, and how do I go about finding them? Since I lost my husband last year, my Social Security survivor benefit is barely enough to get by on.

Dear Searching, I’m very sorry for your loss, but you’ll be happy to know that there are dozens of different financial assistance programs and government benefits that may be able to help you with your everyday costs.

To locate these types of programs, your best resource is BenefitsCheckUp.org. This is a free, confidential online screening tool designed for older adults and people with disabilities. It will help you find federal, state and local benefits programs that can assist with paying for food, utilities, health care, medications, housing and many other needs. This site – created by the National Council on Aging in 2001 – contains nearly 2,000 programs across the country.

To identify benefits, you’ll first need to type in your ZIP code and choose the types of benefits you’re interested in. Then you’ll need to answer a few questions regarding your personal and financial situation. Once completed, you’ll get a list of programs to choose from, followed by a personalized report that explains each program, and tells you where you can get help or how to apply.

If you need some assistance or you don’t have internet access, you can always speak with a benefits support specialist by calling 800-794-6559.

You can also get help in-person at any of the 85 Benefit Enrollment Centers located across 41 states. See NCOA. org/article/meet-our-benefits-enrollment-centers to search for a center in your area.

Types of Benefits Depending on your income level, location and circumstance, here are a few of the many different benefits you may be eligible for: Nutrition assistance: Programs like

the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can help pay for food at the grocery store. The average SNAP benefit for 60-and-older households is around $105 per month.

Some other nutrition programs that are available to seniors include the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program.

Utility assistance: There’s the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) that provides assistance in lowering home heating and cooling costs. And for broadband assistance, the Affordable Connectivity Program provides a $30 monthly subsidy that can be applied toward your home internet costs.

Health care and medicine: Medicare Savings Programs and Medicaid can help or completely pay for seniors’ out-of-pocket health care costs.

And for assistance with medications, there’s a low-income subsidy program called ‘Extra Help’ that helps pay premiums, deductibles, and co-payments on Medicare (Part D) prescription drug coverage. You can also search

for prescription drug help through patient assistance programs or your state pharmaceutical assistance program at Medicare.gov.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI): Administered by the Social Security Administration, SSI (see ssa. gov/ssi) provides monthly payments to very low-income seniors, age 65 and older, as well as to those who are blind and disabled. In 2023, SSI pays up to $914 per month for a single person and up to $1,371 for couples.

In addition to these benefits, there are dozens of other programs BenefitsCheckUp can help you identify, like housing assistance, property tax reduction, home weatherization assistance, tax relief, veteran’s benefits, senior transportation, caregiving support, free legal assistance, disability services, job training and more.
