W. Gold and Cansler is Bess Alice Phifer now a four-way stop BESS ALICE HAMBRIGHT PHIFER
By Loretta Cozart
turns 106 Friday By Loretta Cozart Bess Phifer will enjoy her 106th birthday with family and friends on Friday, October 13. As a child, she was called Bess Alice by everyone. Her family attended Antioch Baptist Church and she attended school in a one-room schoolhouse her mother founded. She grew up near Kings Mountain National Military Park, but the land was not owned by the National Park back then. Everyone around
here just called it the battleground. When Bess was 12, she attended the one-hundredfifth anniversary of the Battle of Kings Mountain. The year was 1930. President Herbert Hoover was the keynote speaker. Her mother had responsibilities during the celebration, so Bess and her siblings were free to wander. She remembers the throngs of people. “The President's speech was good; I remember seeing the speakers stand. Most of all,” she said, “I remember having the whole day free with all those people I didn’t know” See HAMBRIGHT, PAGE 5A
Last week, the City of Kings Mountain released a video after changing the stop pattern at Cansler St. and W. Gold St. to a new 4-way stop. According to Police Chief Gerald Childress, the intersection was changed due to recent crashes and near misses. As you drive East toward downtown on West Gold Street and approach the intersection at Cansler Street, be aware that the stop sign is placed before the crosswalk. This was done because the crosswalk is at an odd angle, and pedestrians always have the right-of-way. After ensuring the crosswalk is clear, drivers can proceed to the intersection,
Police Chief Gerald Childress warns citizens to be careful at the new four-way stop at Cansler and West Mountain Streets stopping again before proceeding. The stop bar is scheduled for installation
but has not been completed. Chief Childress reminds everyone, “Remember, at
a four-way stop sign, the driver to the right always has the right of way.”
