KMHS to graduate 303 Seniors in the Class of 2017 Saturday Kings Mountain High School will graduate one of its largest classes – 303 seniors – in the Class of 2017 Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at John Gamble Stadium. Graduating seniors will lead the program, including class officers. Seniors will give speeches, make introductions, and in traditional caps and gowns will march to the 9th Grade Band playing “Pomp and Circumstance” from the

high school gymnasium area to be seated in front of the stage in the stadium and later this summer report to jobs, military service, and colleges and universities. Graduation cords will mark the robes of graduates to note membership in clubs and a white stole will mark those in the National Honor Society, gold for Beta Club, turquoise for Renaissance club, light pink for Tri-M Music honor society, multi-colored

for National Arts Society, blue for Student Participation Organization, purple and white for National Vocational Technical Honor Society, royal blue for National/International Thespian, royal blue and gold for National/International Scholar Thespian, red and white for Family Career and Community Leaders of America, royal blue and white for Interact club and teal and white cord for Certified Nursing Assistant.

Diplomas will be presented by Principal Julie Rikard, Assistant Principal Dustin Morehead, and Supt. Dr. Stephen Fisher. Members of the Cleveland County Board of Education will be recognized. The principal addresses will be given by the Valedictorian, the No. 1 student academically in the class, and the Salutatorian, the No. 2. student academically in the class. As the Herald went

to press, three young women were tied for No. 1 in the Class of 2017. Class officers are President Richard Fernandez, Secretary/Treasurer Kaitlyn Moss and Class Representative Jessica Dulin. Commencement exercises began Sunday, June 4 with the baccalaureate service at B. N. Barnes Auditorium. Dr. Roger Woodard, Senior Pastor of Family Worship Center in Kings Mountain,

challenged the graduates in the sermon “On Purpose, For a Purpose.” Graduating seniors Richard Fernandez, Matthew Scoggins, Malachi Wingate, Landon Ervin, Erica Harris and Marla Silaphet participated by reading scriptures and offering prayers. Seniors in the Symphonic Chorale presented special music under the direction of Mrs. Sarah Fulton.

Trio tied for No. 1 in Class of 2017 Excited! Wouldn’t you be excited too! Three Kings Mountain senior girls are tied for No. 1 academically in a class of 303 graduating seniors at Kings Mountain High School. Tops in their class, all three – Gretchen Boyles, Abigail Morehouse and Madison Weeks – are also active in club and community activities. Daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Boyles, Gretchen plans to attend Wake Forest University and major in Political Science and Communications. She will attend Law school after graduation from Wake Forest. Gretchen plays

volleyball, is active in the Band, Beta Club, National Honor Society, Student Government, and the local chapter of Make a Wish Foundation in which the students raise money to grant a wish to a terminally ill child. Last year Gretchen attended Tar Heel Girls State representing American Legion Auxiliary Unit 155. Morehouse, daughter of Shelley and Darrell Gerald, plans to attend Asheville/ Buncombe Tech Community College and study Dental Hygiene. She aspires for a career as a Dentist. At KMHS she is active in the National Honor Society, Beta and Art Clubs.

Daughter of Paul and Sherri Weeks, Madison plans to attend East Carolina University and major in Exercise Physiology and after four years in college study three years to earn her dress as Doctor of Physical Therapy. Last year Madison attended Tar Heel Girls State representing American Legion Auxiliary Unit 155. A cheerleader at KMHS, Madison ran track and field, was active in Beta and Ambassadors clubs, National Honor Society, Student Government and in the Chess Club, a club which meets and plays chess at lunch time on campus.
