Regrouping for another playoff run

Kings Mountain’s varsity Mountaineers open their season Friday night at North Gaston High in Dallas.

Mountaineers open season Friday at North Gaston year, Bessemer City transfer Shun Allison, and Tyler Osborne and Mike Toms, both up from the JVs. TJ Camp, who was the backup quarterback a year ago, will be at the tight end position along with Jerdon Pressley and JT Cash.

The Mountaineers return one of the best quarterbacks in the area in senior Darren Burns, who had a breakout season last year after missing his sophomore season with a knee injury. Burns passed for a school record 2,669 yards and 25 touchdowns. He passed for 98 yards as a freshman, giving him a career total of 2,767.

Barring injury, he should become the school’s alltime career passing leader this season.

Barring injury, which cost him part of his first three seasons, he could be one of the strongest and best running backs around.

Other running backs looking good are Quenten Nguyen, who is up from the JV team; Allison, and freshman Ricaylen Mack, who led Kings Mountain Middle to the Tri-County Conference championship last year.

When the Mountaineers go to their big package, defensive linemen Kahl Welch and Trevon Wilson will be at fullback.

The defense will also have a mixture of returning starters and newcomers.

The Mountaineers should be very impressive up front, just as they were last season. Wilson, a senior

with two years as a starter, will be joined by Jeremiah Brown and Sabian Beam at the tackle positions.

Jerdon Pressley, who started last year as a sophomore, will be the lone returner at end. He will be joined by Nathan Lease and AJ Austin, who were standouts at the JV level last year, and Welch and Brandon Manning.

JT Cash and McClain return at linebacker, and they will be joined by Stefan Chisholm, Mack and Nguyen.

The secondary took a hard hit with the loss of Merchant at safety as well as college-bound Chris Robbins and Marquise Camp at the corners. Mosley and Reese Reinhardt hope to take up the slack at safety. Wade and Allison will move into the corner positions.

The place-kicking duties will go to junior Micah Randall, who tied the school single season record with 59 kicking points last year; Burns will handle the punting; and Short returns at long snapper where he is getting a lot of looks from colleges.

Mosley, Allison and Toms will be the kick returners.

Coach Lloyd expects the Mountaineers to be strong again, but he is concerned with so many players going both ways.

“We have more than I would like,” he said. “The key for us is that we have to stay healthy. If we do we will have a good season.

We hope our seniors will

be good leaders.”

Lloyd has been impressed with the defense so far. Just like last year, defensive coordinator Darryl Wilson and Coach Lloyd hope to see some sack machines on D. “The defensive line should be our strength, Lloyd said. “As far as the offense, we will play as well as the offensive line lets us play. It might take a little while to get up to speed but we have a chance to have a good year.”

Looking to the SMAC race, Lloyd sees what he calls “the same old, same old.”

“Shelby is the team to beat,” he said. “They have one of the best teams they’ve ever had. They have a lot of people back, including nine starters on defense.

“Crest is going to be good, just like always, and I expect Burns to be much improved. A lot of the teams will be better. This should be a strong conference. I think you will see a lot of teams from this conference do very well in the playoffs.”

Lloyd wants to see his Mountaineers get better every week and build steam going into the state playoffs. Another deep run is very possible.

“We have to replace some good athletes,” he said. “We have good athletes. We just have to find the best place for them by the time we go to East Rutherford to start the conference schedule. We still have a lot of work to do.”

Despite losses of some key players who were either injured in pre-season or chose not to play this season, Kings Mountain High football coach Greg Lloyd still expects to put a good team on the field this fall.

The Mountaineers open their season Friday night at North Gaston for the first of three non-conference games. Coach Lloyd may be using a lot of different combinations in those games in hopes of being well prepared for their South Mountain Athletic Conference season which begins September 9 at East Rutherford.

Kings Mountain is coming off a 12-3 season – Lloyd’s best since taking over the head coaching duties in 2007 – and played for the Western North Carolina championship for the second time during Lloyd’s tenure.

The Mountaineers have many starters returning, but are rebuilding their offensive line which has only one starter returning. The coaching staff is also replacing the team’s career leader in pass receiving, Jake Merchant, who tore his ACL in a Shrine Bowl combine and is lost for the season. Others who could have started decided not to play.

At least during the early games, the coaching staff may be using several players at each position to see who will get the starting nod for the conference run.

The only returning starter on the offensive line is junior Collen Franks, and he will move from guard to tackle. Also looking good at tackle are Keshawn Hopper and Zach Premo.

Senior Cooper Short, who has been the long snapper and back-up lineman the past two seasons, and Daniel Bagwell, who is up from the JV team, are presently competing at the center position.

Jonathan Rikard, who played some on varsity last year and started regularly on the SMAC champion JVs, William Quinn and Colby Hughes are looking good at guard.

Due to the above-mentioned losses, the Mountaineers have only one receiver with varsity experience. Kavin Mosley, who was a slot receiver last year, will probably spend more time at split end this year to take up the slack from losing Merchant. Mosley had 686 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns last year, has good hands and quickness and should be one of the best receivers in the SMAC. Others getting a look at receiver positions are sophomore Kaylon Wade, who was the JV quarterback last

PREDICTION NG will put a good starting eleven on the field, but won’t have the depth or experience to challenge for the Big South title.

KM OFFENSE The Mountaineers run a pistol spread. They are basically a 50-50 pass-run offense. QB Darren Burns, RB Darian McClain and WR Kavin Mosley will be the veteran threats but KM has some other talented transfers and young players who will be exciting to watch.

KM DEFENSE The defense has some good returners such as linemen Trevon Wilson, Khal Welch, Jerdon Pressley, and Lb’s JT Cash and McClain who will be among the best in the area.

KICKING / RETURN GAME Micah Randall, who tied the single season record for kicking points as a sophomore, returns for what should be a good junior season; and the Mountaineers’ return game should be good.

PREDICTION Despite some key losses to graduation, injuries and defections, the Mountaineers could still make a deep playoff run.

Current members, new members needed for KM Touchdown Club Kings Mountain Touchdown Club’s annual membership drive is underway.

Present members are asked to renew their memberships as soon as possible.

Members of the club enjoy many benefits, including parking in their own parking lot right behind the KMHS baseball field, annual barbecue and other events, and meeting with KMHS coaches every Tuesday night during football season to look at game films and learn more about the program.

The Touchdown Club was organized in 2007 with 83 members. Since that time it has grown in memberships and has donated over $1.8 million to KMHS athletics. That includes the new field house, the new concession stand and restrooms which are under construction now, and donations of money to provide new equipment, travel expenses and weight room improvements for all sports.

The first meeting with coaches is Tuesday, August 30 at 7 p.m. in the new field house.

Allran named athletic trainer and softball coach Kevin Allran has been named head athletic training and girls softball coach at Kings Mountain High School.

A native and resident of Charlotte, Allran is the son of the late Gary Allran, who graduated from KMHS in 1956.

His mother, Shelby, lives in Charlotte. He and his wife Teresa have three children and two grandchildren.

Allran is a 1983 graduate of West Mecklenburg High School, where he played soccer, baseball and golf. Most of his educational career has been in Mecklenburg, Union and Gaston County.

He graduated from Appalachian State with a degree in exercise science and served a one-year appointment at ASU with the football and men’s basketball programs.

He has been a successful softball coach at numerous schools, and has also coached girls basketball. He started the fast-pitch program at Charlotte Latin and his team was state runner-up in 2001 and won its conference championship in 2002 through 2005.

He moved to the new Marvin Ridge High in Union County and started its softball program in 2007. He compiled a 71-30 record there. His 2009 team played in the Western Regional championship game and he

was the South Piedmont Conference Coach of the Year.

He was a State Games assistant in 2009 and the team won the bronze medal. He was head coach in 2010 and won the regional gold medal, and coached the West team to a two-game sweep in the best of three East-West All-Star game championship.

He has also coached travel teams and served as a NCHSAA official.

Allran was the North Carolina High School Trainer of the Year in 1998 and the 2008 Shrine Bowl trainer.

He is already on the job as KM’s athletic trainer. Although he has not met with the softball players, he said he is anxious to get the program going.

“I am very happy to be the softball coach,” he said. “Kings Mountain has a real strong tradition which Coach (Suzanne) Grayson started, and Coach (Craig) Short continued. I know they struggled last year but we hope to be very fundamentally sound and aggressive on the base paths. Our goal will be to improve every time we go out on the field.”

Softball is in a dead period now and he cannot have any contact with players.

“I hope they will come by and see me after

school starts,” he said.

“There are no assistant coaches yet, but as soon as we can start workouts we will be doing some things with pitchers and catchers and plan some workouts if they’re not involved in other sports.”

Allran said he is “very excited” to have some experienced and excited student trainers (Deyawna Rollinson, Briasia White and Erica Harris) who have been with the program for three years and do an excellent job.

“Everyone has been very supportive,” he said.

“All of the trainers and coaches have been fantastic to work with.”

Allran estimated that he will be working with over 300 student athletes during the fall season, including over a hundred in football alone.

“Ten to twelve hours per day is not unusual,” he said. “But I am very excited and blessed to be here. I already feel like part of the family.

“I have always known about Kings Mountain because of my parents, so when I saw the opening I applied immediately,” he said. “The facilities are fantastic and Athletic Director Mark Latham does a great job. I am impressed with everything.”

Mountaineer kickers young, but still look for good season “It is so incredible, from year to year, to see these young men step up and start,” noted veteran head coach Dan Potter. “It always surprises me how well they perform in those vacancies.”

The Mountaineers’ cupboard was not entirely left empty as senior co-captains Luke Rikard and Brian Lysek will return as top scoring threats.

Juniors Chase Yow, Nolan Raby and Mason Nguyen will anchor the midfield.

Senior Josh Scism will provide much

speed and finishing ability out on the right flank for the Mountaineers this season.

The Mountaineers lost most of the starting defenders from last season but will have Brandon Quevedo-Johns organizing the back line. Seniors Will Robinson and Hunter Champion will fill two of those starting defensive slots with several others competing for time.

Holden Bullock will challenge for starting time along with junior Landon Wright, sophomore Dane Skeith and freshman Tristan Stenger.

The keeper position will

be filled by John Harris who shared quite a bit of time in goal last season with Jarrett Ledford, who has graduated.

Mitchell Hord, Travis Wright, Josue Molina, Richard Hernandez, Alex Garcia, Dewi Eagan and Cameron Strickland will be pressing the starters for game time.

“This is a younger team than what we had last season but I believe that they will rise to the chance to start and push each other to have another solid season,” said Potter. “We have more players trying out for soccer this season than any other in

school history. So I guess you could say we are making history already.”

Patrick Brady will be the head JV men’s soccer coach this season.

Coach Potter is joined by two former KMHS men’s soccer team alumnus this season as they assist the teams this fall. Both Lenny Wright and Srimaha Rithiphong played on the very first KMHS soccer team back in 1989. Wright will primarily be working with the goalkeepers and Rithiphong will be training the field players.

“Ted Trahan worked

with us for the last five years and still helps with strength and conditioning of the athletes all summer long but will be limited due to work requirements this season,” said Potter. “He still shows up from time to time to encourage the boys as he is a fantastic motivator of young men.

“The junior varsity team will be loaded with players this season and we look for a tremendous amount of growth under the direction of Coach Brady,” Potter said.

Brian Lysek (6) and Luke Rikard (11) will be two of the top scoring threats for Kings Mountain High’s soccer team this fall.

The 2016 men’s soccer team at KMHS will have a tall task if they are to keep improving from last year’s record smashing season.

The 2015 Mountaineers set records for most victories in a season at 17, most shut-outs in a season at 12, most goals scored in a season at 80, and tied a school record for going the farthest in the state playoffs, the second round.

The departure of seven seniors and one foreign exchange student will be hard for the 2016 Mountaineers to replace.

KMHS 2016 Varsity Volleyball Team

New volleyball coach sees continued success Heather Pasour has been named head volleyball coach at Kings Mountain High School.

She has been a successful head coach on the middle school and high school level for many years, and is looking forward to continuing a successful program in Kings Mountain.

Pasour saw her team in action for the first time recently during a multi-team scrimmage at the local gym.

She is pleased with the team’s progress thus far, and expects the Lady Mountaineers to be successful in the South Mountain Athletic Conference and post-season play.

“We have a lot of talent,” she said. “We have some logistics to work out but we have a lot of experienced players.”

Returning starters KaMyiah Pressley, Sara Pasour, LeeAsia Rhodes, Ashton Withers and Gretchen Boyles should provide the experience to mix with some talented younger players as Kings Mountain seeks to repeat as SMAC champions.

Pasour has had success at numerous local schools, including North Gaston. One of her biggest victories there was the school’s first win over the Lady Mountaineers in 2012. The Lady Wildcats won the Big South Conference that year with an undefeated record and Pasour was named the conference coach of the year.

Heather Pasour has been named head women’s volleyball coach at Kings Mountain High School. long before I came here,” she said.

Pasour also served seven years at WC Friday Middle School, where she posted a 79-5 record and won seven straight Gaston County championships. WC Friday’s is North Gaston’s feeder school.

Pasour believes in strong defense, serving and hitting and stresses the team has to have all three every night out to be a winner. She has been impressed with newcomers Lindsey Deaver, who is a strong outside hitter, and Baylee Marr, a strong right side hitter.

Pasour said the team has done a lot of off-season work since April, including going to a summer camp at

Appalachian State University.

“We just need to figure out who works well with each other, and getting them to jell,” Pasour said. “We have a lot of girls moving up and we just have to mesh with each other.”

Pasour said, being new, she really doesn’t know what to expect from other teams in the SMAC. “I’ve heard that Draughn will be very good, along with R-S Central,” she said.

“We will be competitive. I just don’t know what everybody else has.”

Pasour is married to Kenneth Pasour, who once served as an assistant baseball coach at KMHS.

With all of their starters and many others back, Kings Mountain’s Lady Mountaineers hope to repeat as SMAC champions this fall.

Experienced Kings Mountain High tennis team expects big year in SMAC and state an even bigger year than last year.”

This season, the Lady Mountaineers will be competing for the final championship of what is now the SMAC 2A/3A Conference.

The conference’s three 3A schools – Kings Mountain, Crest and Burns – will be going into the Big South 3A next fall.

Henderson sees Draughn as the Lady Mountaineers’ toughest competition in the SMAC. “Not knowing the talent of our players before the season started last year, I never dreamed of such a young team producing an 11-1 overall record and 7-0 conference record and walking away with the conference championship and having qualified for the state championship,” Henderson said. “Having all players returning will send a strong message to our competitors.”

The Lady Mountaineers will have a tremendous amount of depth and will be highly regarded as one of the best teams in the state.

Returning starters along with Lutz are last year’s two through six seeds Kassie Johnson, MC Johnson, Car-

rigan Leatherman, Amber Belcher and Kayla Condrey, respectively.

Other returning players looking to break into the starting lineup are Jasmine Guy, Ann Scott Baker, Hallie Hunt and Karmen Houser.

“I am truly excited to have Sarah Bell coming from the Kings Mountain Middle School team,” noted Coach Henderson. “Sarah is progressing and truly showing some progress in practice.

“Injuries over the last year or so have hampered a couple players, especially having to deal without the services of Kassie Johnson for a match or two, and Natalie Lutz who nursed a shoulder injury for a couple of weeks. But she played through the pain.”

The Lady Mountaineers will kick off their season with a home match against Lincolnton Tuesday, August 23. They will play their first conference match at home against RS Central on Wed., Aug. 31.

How do you duplicate a season like Kings Mountain High’s women’s tennis had last year?

Rick Henderson’s Lady Mountaineers had their best season in over 25 years, winning the South Mountain Athletic Conference and coming within one doubles win of advancing to the third round of the state playoffs.

“That loss to Hickory back in October really hurts to this day,” says Coach Henderson.

Knowing that he has every starter, numerous reserves and some talented newcomers back this year, Henderson feels like he has one of the better teams in the state.

“Coming up short the way we did, well, I’ll just say that our girls will be very hungry this season and I’m very optimistic we will be very strong contenders for another conference championship,” says Henderson. “I can assure you that we will go deeper into the state championships, of course, depending on the draw. Having everyone back will be the big difference.”

When discussing the KM team, you have to start with talented sophomore Natalie Lutz, who was the number one freshman in the state last year.

“She has been such as blessing for us,” says Henderson. “What a season Nat had last year. She only lost one match during conference play and that was against the MVP of the SMAC, Crest Charger Lauren Scism.

“Nat finished in the elite eight of the state championship and was one of only two freshmen that qualified.

KM girls cross country eyes three-peat, Mountaineers should be much stronger Optimistic is probably the best word to describe Kings Mountain High cross country coach Rayvis Key as he prepares his boys and girls teams for the upcoming season.

Kings Mountain’s girls will be going after their third straight South Mountain 2A/3A Athletic Conference championship; and the boys, who have their biggest turnout in years with 15 runners, are hoping to be greatly improved over last year’s fourth place finish.

The teams are hard at work now going through weight training at KMHS, and running each weekday at either the high school or Gateway Trail.

They open their season Sat., Aug. 27 in a 44-team Western North Carolina meet at Jackson Park in Hendersonville and will begin their regular season on Wed., Aug. 31 in a multiteam run at Forestview High in Gastonia.

Kings Mountain will host just one run this season, on September 8 against South Point, Hunter Huss,

Because Key has set the bar so high – he wants to qualify a lot of runners for the state championship – the Mountaineers have scheduled numerous invitationals and multi-team meets against top-notch competition.

Rising senior Kaitlyn Moss, last year’s SMAC Runner of the Year, was the only Kings Mountain runner to qualify for the state championship run in 2015.

“We would love to take the whole team this year,” said Coach Key. “We would love to be in the top four in the Western Regional.

That’s what you have to do to qualify as a team.”

There is no doubt the Lady Mountaineers have the talent to do it.

The KM ladies should have four of the top runners in the conference with Moss, Nicola Bridges, Conner Calhoun and Caroline Foster all making the All-Conference team last year.

Key has three seniors in Moss, Carmen Henwood

and Evey Morris.

Incoming freshman Maggie Lloyd, who won numerous meets for Kings Mountain Middle as a seventh and eighth grader, should not just take up the slack from the loss of graduating seniors but give the team another potential first place runner.

“We’ve had 18 girls going twice a day on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the high school and in the weight room; and still running the Gateway Trail on Tuesday and Thursday nights,” Key noted.

While Key said everyone will be pointing to Draughn to win the boys conference championship, he is certain Kings Mountain can improve on its strong fourth place finish from last season.

“We didn’t lose but one senior,” he pointed out, “and we return two all-conference runners in Austin McKee and Malachi Wingate. The boys are looking real good.”

Tennis and soccer player Dane Skeith has joined the

team and looks to be one of the top runners, Key said.

“He looks good, and I mean really, really good,” Key said. The coach is also high on a couple of incoming freshmen, Jaylen Roberts and Jesse Hughes.

“They battled each other for number one at the middle school last year and will be a big plus for us,” Key said. “They will make a big impact toward us raising the bar and closing the gap between our first and second place and the fourth and fifth place runners.”

Key also hopes to see the team move much closer to the top of the conference standings.

“I would have to say Draughn is the favorite; they’re really good,” he said. “East Burke graduated four or five runners and Shelby lost their best runner so they’re not quite as strong as they’ve been. I would love to see us get up there to second place. That would be a big year for us.”

Lutz will carry KM’s dream of having a golf champion Veteran Kings Mountain High golf coach Kevin Moss has some good news and bad news about the 2016 fall season.

The good news is that he has one of the best young players in the state in sophomore Natalie Lutz.

The bad news is that, unless another golfer surfaces soon, Lutz will be the only one representing KMHS in the South Mountain Athletic Conference and the state

tournament.

Lutz, who also plays tennis in the fall, is coming off a very successful freshman golf season. She finished second individually in the SMAC and was a Western Regional and NCHSAA state championship qualifier. She finished 17th in the 3A state championship.

“She has played in several junior tournaments since the end of last year’s golf season and has done

very well in those tournaments,” Coach Moss noted.

“She has been practicing and playing a lot of golf the past 10 months, and hopefully all that hard work will pay off for the upcoming high school season.”

Kings Mountain isn’t the only team suffering from a lack of participation in girls golf. The SMAC is down to just four schools with enough golfers to field a team.

“Our conference does not recognize a team champion, but does recognize an individual champion,” Coach Moss said. “With Natalie’s hard work in the off season and coming off her success last year, she should be able to compete and possibly become the individual conference champion. Although Crest graduated the individual champion from last year, they still have a couple of girls who are competitive.”

Donations, pledges still needed for KM concession stand project Work is well underway on the new Kings Mountain High School concession stand/restroom facility at John Gamble Stadium, but the sponsoring Kings Mountain Touchdown Club still needs assistance from the public to have the project fully funded.

The club recently received donations from City Councilmen Mike Butler and Jay Rhodes, but still needs over $10,000 to meet the $265,000 goal in pledges and donations to make the project fully funded. Other city officials are being challenged to contribute as well.

Trent Hagans Construction is the general contractor for the project, and it is first class. It will include a large area where food can be freshly grilled, spacious new men’s and women’s restrooms and serving windows on the front and back of the building so concession stand workers and keep up with the baseball and football action. The outside brick work is basically finished but there is still much work to be done on the in-

side and on the grounds.

On the John Gamble Stadium side, there will be a huge porch where concession stand workers can sit and enjoy the game when there are no customers.

The project also includes a bull pen for the visitor’s side of the baseball field. The bullpen and much of the walking area between the baseball and football fields will have turf which will cut down on maintenance duties.

Although Hagans Construction is working hard every day, both Brinkley and Trent Hagans said the project may not be ready for the opening home varsity football game on August 26. However, following that game the Mountaineers will be on the road the next two weeks, and hopefully the concession stand will be up and running by the second home game.
