Saturday is Decision Day for NC House Republicans Who wants to be Speaker of the N.C. House of Representatives?

Tim Moore, Kings Mountain lawyer who has served six terms in the N. C. House, represents Cleveland County in the 111th District and current rules chairman, is in the running to succeed Thom Tillis, who was elected to the US Senate during the recent midterm elections.

Republican House members are expected to make their choice for speaker at a caucus meeting Saturday.

The full House will vote Jan. 14, 2015, but with Republicans holding a 74-46

Tim Moore majority, the GOP has the votes needed to carry the vote.

In addition to the Rules committee, Moore chairs

the elections and the House select committee on UNC Board of Governors nominating committees. Five other Republicans seek the top leadership post.

The House speaker can set the legislative agenda for the entire state, since that person makes committee appointments and decides when and if legislation comes up for a vote in the House.

Moore was unopposed for reelection to his 7th term in the House in the November elections.

He is the son of Kings Mountain councilman Rick Moore and Mrs. Moore. He has two sons.

City of KM signs 20 year deal with NTE Energy

“This is a historic day," said Mayor Rick Murphrey Thursday as he signed a 20year energy agreement with CEO Seth Shortlidge and NTE Energy effective Jan. 1, 2019.

Kings Mountain will be cutting ties five years from now with its wholesale electric supplier Duke Energy after 108 years of doing business with the power company.

Earlier, the seven members of city council added their blessings to what will include a new power plant

to be built by NTE Energy and a projected 29% cost savings in 2019 for the city and its customers.

“Our customers are our No. 1 priority," said the mayor, adding savings will be passed on to citizens.

During the brief city council meeting in which the vote by seven councilmen was unanimous, Murphrey said, “We had a responsibility to provide our customers, our citizens, with the best low cost product, the best price and the best service. I think we have done that with this agreement.”

The mayor estimates the

city will save $4-5 million each year by switching to NTE. The City of Concord is also in negotiations with NTE Energy for power, also beginning Jan. 1, 2019, NTE Energy CEO Seth Shortlidge announced later Thursday evening at a sit-down dinner hosted by the City of Kings Mountain for city and county officials, city staff, and visiting staff from NTE Energy.

The trains clicked and whistled by the general store, the police station, a Ferris wheel, a Christmas village and a supermarket Saturday at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum’s annual Toys, Games and Trains exhibit. The trains carried lumber, coal, tractors, tanks and of course people. All to a 1:64 scale of course.

Model train enthusiasts from the Piedmont S-Gaugers club again blew into town last week to undertake the hard work of setting up the large track and tiny town.

■ OBITUARIES Dr. John Charles McGill family physician over 42 years KINGS MOUNTAINDr. John Charles McGill, 92, resident of 703 Hillside Drive, K i n g s Mountain, NC, died Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at his home.

He was born in Clover, SC to the late Waldo Knox McGill, Sr. and Elsie Sullivan McGill. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth H. McGill and W. K. McGill, Jr. In 1943 John was graduated from Erskine College and then Vanderbilt University Medical School. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a public health officer in Kobe, Japan.

In 1952 Dr. McGill located in Kings Mountain and began attending Boyce Memorial ARP Church where he served as Elder and faithful long-time member. He was the owner of the McGill Clinic, Kings Mountain, serving the community as a family physician for over 42 years. “Dr. John”, as he was known, loved his patients and was

known for his compassionate care and gentle nature.

He delivered over 2,000 babies, cared for entire families and made house calls on a regular basis during his career.

Dr. John was a man of many interests, including walking his beloved farmland in York and Cherokee counties; traveling to Erskine College to watch “Flying Fleet” basketball games; participating in Rotary Club activities; serving on the Board of Trustees of Erskine College; and, in his later years, going out to dinner with his friends “The Rowdy Boys.”

He was devoted to the Kings Mountain community, and served for 53 years on the Board of Directors of Kings Mountain Savings & Loan (now Bank of the Ozarks), where he was elected President and Chairman of the Board during his tenure. One of Dr. McGill’s other loves was studying family history and attending McGill Reunions at Bethany ARP Church.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mabel Hamilton McGill, Kings Mountain; sons, John Knox McGill and wife, Beth, and Charles Hamilton McGill and wife, Peggy, all of Belmont; daughters, Frances Sullivan McGill, Salisbury; Mer-

edith Jane McGill, Cary; and Elizabeth McGill Cross and husband Robert “Rob” of Midlothian, VA; sister, Elsie McGill Tinkler, Greenwood, SC and sisterin-law, Nancy T. McGill, Hypoluxo, Florida; and six grandchildren, Carmen McGill, Pressly McGill, Caroline Cross, Sara Sullivan Cross, Robert Cross and Catherine Cross.

The memorial service was held Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Boyce Memorial ARP Church.

Rev. Nick Napier and Rev. Doug Petersen officiated.

The family received friends Friday evening, November 14, at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain.

Services were held Tuesday at 2p.m. at Dixon Presbyterian Church, with officiating by

BESSEMER CITY – Lewis Glen ( Tootle) Ball, 69, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 at 1 a.m. at his home.

He was born in Thacker, WV on Nov. 4, 1945 to Georgie Inice Chafin and Fred B. Ball. He is preceded in death by his par-

ents, his son, ‘Turk’ Lewis Glen Bell Jr., sister, Ollie ‘Pug’ Goforth and brothers Ray Ball and Kelly Ball.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years Linda Ball; daughters, Amanda Ball, Margie Sanders and fiance Shawn Shinn and Debora Boone and husband, Robert Boone Jr., seven grandsons and step-grandsons and four granddaughters and step- granddaughters, two great-grandchildren and many other loved ones and friends.

He wanted to help others even in death, therefore he

requested for his remains to be donated to science for research and study for anyone who needs them. In light of his requests, there will not be a traditional viewing and funeral. The family will receive loved ones and friends at his home at 607 S.12th Street in Bessemer City from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2014 through Friday, Nov. 21, 2014.

Ramsey was traveling north on Ford Street but had stopped while employees loaded garbage into the truck. Police reported slight damage to the Loftin vehicle and no damage to the garbage truck.

OCT. 25: Officer H.W. Carpenter charged Daniel James Soulia, Spartanburg, SC. Soulia was driving a 1996 Dodge, lost control of the vehicle nearly striking the guardrail before going into the embankment. Property damage was estimated at $1,000.

NOV. 7: Officer G.L. McKinney said that vehicles operated by Jackie Forbes, 308 Scotland Dr., and Lakisha Brown, Baltimore, MD, were involved in an accident on I-85 South.

Property damage was estimated at $400 to the Forbes vehicle, $4,000 damage to the Brown 2014 Hyundai, and $700 to a guard rail.

left lane of I-85 and when traffic abruptly slowed he attempted to switch to the right lane, lost control of the vehicle which ran off the right side of the roadway, hit a ditch, rolled over on the left side and then traveled a short distance where it flipped back onto the upright position and came to a stop. NOV. 12: Officer H. W. Carpenter said that Paul Parker, 113 Brayton Lane, driving a 2003 Ford, backed into a parked city garbage truck at 909 S. Battleground Ave. Property damages were estimated at $3,000.

NOV.12: Officer H. W. Carpenter said that a 2005 Ford driven by Amy Elrod of Gastonia was rear-ended by a hit and run driver at a red stop and go signal.

Elrod said a woman got out of a black Toyota SUV and yelled “there’s no damage” and got back in the car, backed up and hit another vehicle. Property damage to the Elrod vehicle was estimated at $5,000.

Kings Mountain High School honored at 2014 NCTC High School Play Festival Festival has strengthened arts education in schools by bringing curriculum to life, challenging students to do their very best work, and contributing to the development of future audiences for live performing arts. The program is the largest high school theatre event in the Southeast, with more than 3,000 students from 91 schools performing 128 plays this year.

Each fall, professional theatres, colleges and high schools across the state host a regional Festival, and the top two outstanding productions from each of the eight sites advance to the NCTC State High School Play Festival, November 20-21 at Greensboro College. Winners there go on to represent the state of NC at the Southeastern Theatre Conference’s annual convention.

The atmosphere at the Play Festival is positive and exciting, and students are filled with energy as they watch shows, learn from their peers and make new theatre friends.

Schools travel with theatrical sets and load-in to a 10’x10’ backstage area.

Following their performance, students join their peers in the cheering audience to receive feedback from professional actors and directors with Broadway and Hollywood credits. Actors, designers, writers, directors and teachers are celebrated, and bring home awards that are displayed beside school

sports trophies.

The NCTC High School Play Festival is made possible with support from the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources; The Beattie Foundation; Lincoln Financial Group; UNC School of the Arts’ School of Design and Production; Wells Fargo; the Moore County Unrestricted Endowment Fund; and Barbizon Lighting Company.

Dr. John will be remembered by many Compassionate. Kind. Caring. Soft spoken. One of a kind.

That’s how patients and friends describe Dr. John Charles McGill who died Nov. 11, 2014 at age 92.

“Dr. John,” as he was affectionately called, retired in 1992 after 42 years as a Kings Mountain family physician at Lib Stewart McGill Clinic, ending a colorful career Managing Editor in medicine, which included delivering 2500 babies and often making 16 house calls in one day before giving up the late hours of obstetrics in the 1980s.

During one long stint in the labor room of Kings Mountain Hospital, Dr. John received a phone call from son, John. Hearing the sounds of labor and delivery convinced young John to abandon any thoughts of following in his father’s footsteps. One memorable delivery took place in the patient’s driveway near East School and produced a set of twins.

While traveling from Atlanta, his car broke down and a passing truck driver picked up John and Mabel, hooked their car to his truck and drove them safely home to Kings Mountain. The next day Dr. John called him to thank him again and was informed “my wife said to tell you that you delivered one of our four children.”

These were just a few of the stories Dr. McGill recalled in an interview in The Herald.

Times changed but McGill said the practice of medicine was rewarding. He decried the over abundance of federal regulations. The patient comes first.

It was only natural that McGill, who aspired to play ball, would be a doctor. Born and reared in a medical family in Clover, SC , his father practiced medicine 50 years, his mother and sister were both nurses, one brother was a dentist, one brother was a medical doctor, and three brothers-in-law were physicians.

Dr. John and Mabel Hamilton McGill were married in 1950 and moved to Kings Mountain in September 1951, five months after Kings Mountain Hospital opened. Marriott Phifer called him one day and said the Jaycees were looking for another doctor.

He had practiced one year in Williamston, SC, after serving two years in the Army Medical Corps in Osaka and Kobe, Japan. One of the thrilling experiences of his service in Japan as a health officer was meeting Helen Keller who came to his office for an injection.

Area physicians were highly supportive of the new doctor and his bride who set up housekeeping in a house on King Street, later moving to Crescent Hill in a neighborhood full of children. The McGills added to the population themselves - Frances, Meredith, John, Elizabeth and Hamilton, and in later years they moved to their home on Hillside Drive and welcomed grandchildren.

The first offices of McGill Clinic was the former store room over Kings Mountain Drug Store. The steps were so steep that any patient who made it to the top was told he already passed the first heart exam, a stress test. McGill was joined by his brother, Dr. Kenneth McGill at the Watterson Street clinic but in 1963 after Dr.Kenneth McGill’s departure for the mission field Dr. Charles Adams and Dr. F. J. Sincox joined the practice in this location.

In his retirement years he often visited patients at Kings Mountain Hospital and White Oak Manor and anyone who knew Dr. John outside the clinic knows that one of his great pleasures was to visit the pastureland in South Carolina where he grew pine trees and and raised cattle.

One afternoon some years ago my nephew, Jeff Grigg, who once was production manager of The Herald, and I were traveling down York Road and suddenly we felt a bump. Before I could get the driver’s door open, Dr. John appeared very concerned we might be hurt. “I just bumped your car,” he said, “I was in a hurry to get down to check on my cows.”

His contributions to this community – and not just as a medical doctor – but in church and civic organizations are well known. Kings Mountain should be grateful that Dr. John Charles McGill passed our way.

In the next days after the meeting I saw newspaper accounts from the viewpoint of one of the councilmen, the city attorney, two more of the city councilmen, the city manager, the mayor and the church.

I've had personal conversations or direct emails with two of the councilmen and the city manager.

The stories are more mixed up than a plate of angel hair pasta and wriggles like a can of braided worms.

These are the facts I know for sure: The church was told they had to give up the space. The city attorney said it was his opinion that usage of city buildings by a religious group had always posed a potential legal problem. On October 20th, just eight days prior to the council meeting the city attorney wrote a memo to the mayor and council stating in part that his opinion was that the use by a church of a government owned facility, as it has been occurring, is not lawful. The city attorney further stated in part the the legal theory which has application to the matter, is sometimes referred to and can be found in what is known as the “establishment clause”. He also said the continued usage by the group could be interpreted as an endorsement of a religion.

Additionally, he said, it also is, which would be illegal, a direct or indirect support of that religious group.

Supposedly there was an earlier memo from the city attorney on this subject but the city manager refused to release it to me on the basis that it wasn't public information, she said according to the city attorney.

Everything I've said here is public knowledge if you've followed this story. I am not going to try and determine who is being truthful and who is not since I am no King Solomon. I'm just going to give you my concerns, especially since the church has found a new

I remember in my very first job during high school as a cashier at the local grocery store the customer service manager coming to me with what I thought was a very odd request one day. “Would you be willing to train a new cashier?” she asked me. I had never trained anyone to do a job before, but I had been a cashier for a while and felt like I knew the responsibilities of the job well. As a new cashier in training was assigned to me and the two of us began working together, I remember thinking two very important things: 1) I have a lot to

go out and share the good news that our God is a God of love and forgiveness and mercy.

In his final days with his disciples, Jesus chooses these words to share with them: that they love one another just as he has loved them.

Jesus goes on to call them chosen friends whom he has appointed to now go out into all the world and bear fruit that will last. And he calls us to do the very same thing when he commands us to go out into the world and make new disciples of every nation. As we go out and make disciples, we must realize two very important things: 1)We have a lot to teach inexperienced Christian disciples; and 2)we are training them to do our job; to go out and make disciples, too. And this is all done to the glory of God through our love for him and for each other.

BROCCOLI CASSEROLE Betty Benton 2 pkgs. (10 oz.) chopped broccoli 2 c. mayonnaise 1 can cream of mushroom soup 2 eggs beaten 1 med. Finely chopped onion 1 cup grated cheese ½ c. butter 1 c. Ritz crackers Cook broccoli and drain. Stir in other ingredients except cracker crumbs. Pour into a greased casserole dish. Top with 1 cup Ritz cracker crumbs. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes.

BROWN RICE Kathy Whitlowe 1 c. Uncle Ben's converted rice ½ c. butter 1 onion diced 2 cans beef consomme salt to taste pepper to taste Bring 2 cans of consomme to boil with chopped onion, salt, pepper, and butter. Add rice, turn heat down to low. Cover and simmer 15 min. or until done.

CRANBERRY CASSEROLE Doris McGinnis 3 c. chopped red apples ( bite size) 2 c. washed, fresh cranberries 1 c. sugar ½ c. butter, melted 1 c. regular oatmeal ½ c. brown sugar 1/3 c. flour ½ c. chopped pecans Mix together in a bowl the apples, cranberries and 1 cup sugar. Put into a 9x13 inch casserole dish For topping: stir together butter, oatmeal, brown sugar and flour. Stir in chopped pecans.

Sprinkle the topping over the casserole. Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes. Can be baked a day ahead. Can be served warm or cold.

CHICKEN POT PIE Connie Savell 2 ½ chicken, cooked and cut into pieces.

2 cups chicken broth 1 can cream of chicken soup ½ cup margarine, melted 1 cup self-rising flour 1 cup buttermilk Place chicken in 9x12 inch baking dish.

Bring to boil in a sauce pan chicken soup and chicken broth. Pour over chicken Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Turn heat up to 450 degrees to brown for a bout 10 minutes or until golden brown.

1965 - John H. Moss was elected mayor. 1966 - Project planning. Bond issue by the city $3 million.

Federal funds $250,000 relocation only 1968-72Construction of the dam and water plant. 1072-74Moss Lake filled. 1974- or later U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Moss Lake dam study. My copy was left in the Planning Department files in 1994 upon my retirement. It has not been located.

Dimensions of the Dam/ Lake Earthen dam 100 feet high East-West length 875 feet with saddle dike on east side North-South width of the core 560 feet Shoreline 57 miles; volume of lake: 15 billion gallons.

Impoundment: Class C Heavy residential development. Maximum depth 100 feet 85 feet at the dam.

Topo: 736 at full pond.

Constant Level- No low level draw down 52 inch siphon pipe on top of the dam near the spillway that allows lowering of water 12 feet maximum.

Critical History of Dam during initial construction – per John H. Moss, Mayor Unexpected sustained rainfall brought large volumes of water down Buffalo Creek with nearly catastrophic results. The dam was in danger of being washed away.

Heavy equipment was mobilized and used in saving the dam. In chaotic conditions the spillway was not restored to original compaction standards. This

explains why the spillway is and will continue to be repeatedly repaired. The original 60 inch pipe was also damaged probably by heavy equipment which explains numerous holes and bulges in the pipe.

The East Embankment is saturated, per the Corps Let me illustrate that I have actually read the Dam report and have a basic understanding of it. The report recommended the following solution. Placement of a buffering system constructed of steel pilings driven to (thru) bedrock and shielded with appropriate materials to hold pressure from the dam.

Step 2: Excavate top of the dam to appropriate depth, creating a 'slurry trench' which protect the dam from catastrophic collapse. No cost estimated were provided. The solution was illustrated with several pages of renderings and schematics. It is my understanding that perfunctory inspections have been conducted over the years which have implied ''no problem."

The 60 inch pipe 560 feet in length under the center of the impervious core- this is the original pipe, sleeved with a 48 inch pipe and now proposed to be fully grouted.

In 1983 (9 years following filling of the lake) the city council was advised by engineer consultants to repair the 60 inch pipe, damaged during original construction.

the 60 inch pipe removing over one ton of debris from the pipe. In preparation to insert the 48 inch pipe. The 48 inch pipe was inserted and grouted. The pipe today is in excellent condition.

The second task was to verify damage and inflow of water from the impervious core. There were holes and bulges in numerous places. I estimated by crude measurements the amount of inflow from the core during the nine years to be in the millions of gallons.

I have pictures of the pipe interior from the entrance to the valve.

What is the possibility that a void of some magnitude exists within the core?

The Spillway The present repair on the spillway is the second or third time. The proof to me that the real sub-surface problem resulting from original construction is not being addressed is this: The consulting engineer offered the following options. Repair the spillway at a cost of $600,000. Replace the spillway at a cost of $6 million.

I believe that the engineers recognize the real problem but the city has chosen a band aid approach once again. This letter should be coming to you from the city administration.

In fairness and due to the passage of time, the problem is not an obvious threat. Your organization has too often been involved to remedy problems due to lack of knowledge and wishful thinking. I will point out one catastrophic dam failure to illustrate the point.

The Kelly Barnes Dam in Toccoa, GA failed in 1977 following a heavy rainfall and the resulting flood killed 39 people and caused $2.8 million in damages. This dam is only 39 feet in height.

This letter is addressed to you since the only vested interest you have is in saving human life and property. I welcome anyone who wishes to challenge this set of facts. My only motive is that I owe this (for the record) to the citizens of Kings Mountain who honored me to serve them for three terms on the city council ( 1997-2003).

Lottery theft: charges land KM man in jail From Page 1 received by a detective with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office on the whereabouts of Rathbone and the information was passed to the Lincolnton Police Department.

This information was then forwarded to the Rock Hill Police Department in South Carolina who sent officers to arrest Rathbone on the charges from Lincolnton PD. He was held in a York County jail before being transported to Lincoln County, where he faced a magistrate on Thursday. Fac-

ing 32 counts of embezzlement, he was placed in the Lincoln County jail under a $30,000 secured bond.

Rathbone has previous convictions for sale of cocaine, felony larceny, felony forgery of instrument, felony uttering a forged instrument, felony breaking and entering to a motor vehicle, misdemeanor larceny, shoplifting, leaving the scene of an accident, simple possession of marijuana, resisting a public officer, and several traffic related charges, according to law enforcement.

Gardner-Webb to Host Annual Christmas Art Sale Fundraiser to feature student artwork Gardner-Webb University will host the annual Christmas Art Sale, featuring handmade pieces by students and other local artists, on Nov. 20-21 in the Tucker Student Center.

The sale will offer a variety of pieces, including ceramics, jewelry, knitted items, and paintings. Many GWU students will also gain professional experience through the event, according to Susan Bell, professor of art.

“It’s an opportunity for students to experience the business side of making art,” Bell shared. “Students learn to price their work competitively and to display it. They learn to create and manage an inventory and sales.”

Thirty percent of the proceeds will fund future activities of Gardner-Webb’s Art Club, including trips to museums such as the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and New York City’s

Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art. Current GWU students and members of the art club are invited to participate in the sale, and new exhibitors will be accepted as space is available. Faculty and community members will also offer art.

South Point here Thursday to open basketball season Kings Mountain High’s winter sports teams get their season under way this week.

The Mountaineer swims teams will open their season Monday Nov. 24 at 6 p.m. against Crest and Chase at Neisler Natatorium. They will participate in the Turkey Invitational November 29 at Isothermal Community College.

Basketball officially tips off Thursday at home against the South Point Red Raiders. JV girls action begins at 4 p.m., followed by the JV boys, varsity girls and varsity boys.

Wrestling opens Friday with the Mountaineers competing in the Cherryville Quads at Nixon Gym in Cherryville. Saturday, the Mountaineers go to Bandys for the Trojan Duals.

Mountaineer basketball coach Grayson Pierce said he was extremely pleased with his team in Saturday’s scrimmage at East Lincoln.

The Mountaineers were scheduled to scrimmage Blacksburg, SC last night at home.

Although official scores cannot be kept, the Mountaineers outscored East Lincoln 71-48.

“We looked really good,” noted Coach Pierce. “Jacob Skidmore scored 21 points and looked very good. He probably had about five blocks and seven rebounds.

“Nelson McClain played really good,” he added. “As a team we executed very well on offense and defended the ball. Everybody played and everybody contributed.”

Coach Pierce was expecting football players Tico Crocker, Shawn Adams and Julian Coulter to join the team on Monday and they should be ready to go by Thursday’s opener.

Pierce expects the Red Raiders to bring a very good team to Parker Gym. “They are very wellcoached,” he said. “They play really hard on defense.

They’re going to hit you and battle you.”

Offensively, Pierce said the Raiders’ 6-4 shooting guard Brandon Reid is one of the best shooters around.

“They’re always quick,” he said. “They are going to be a good test to open up with.”

Kings Mountain will host Forestview next Tuesday.

Patriot wrestlers pin West Lincoln Kings Mountain Middle School’s wrestling team continued its unbeaten string Monday at home, defeating West Lincoln 60-36.

It was a rematch of last year’s Tri-County Conference championship match.

The Patriots got off to a slow start, losing the first four matches, but they won the next six.

Mountaineers fall 41-27 in first round of playoffs The old saying “it’s what’s up front that counts” was never more true than it was Friday night when West Henderson’s line dominated the game as the Falcons defeated Kings Mountain 4127 in the opening round of the state 3A playoffs.

A spectacular offensive performance which saw Falcons’ senior backs Brendan Goings, Cody Jackson and Dustin Fender all top the 100-yard rushing mark and finish the game with a combined 465 yards was just too much for the Mountaineers to overcome. The trio gained all but five of the Falcons’ 470 total yards.

Kings Mountain did, however, put up a strong effort of their own and was within a few missed plays of taking the game right down to the wire, and possibly winning it.

West Henderson’s record to 8-4 and sends them into a second round game Friday at home against East Rowan, a 50-49 winner of the West 2A seed Freedom last week.

Kings Mountain packs its gear up until next fall after compiling an 8-4 overall record, their best record since their Southwestern championship season of 114 in 2008.

KMMS spikers Mountaineers’ future bright fall to North Kings Mountain Middle School’s volleyball team came out strong against North Lincoln Wednesday, winning the first set 25-11.

But the visitors came back to take the match 2516, 26-24 and 25-13.

“The girls fought hard and are looking forward to

their next opportunity to face North Lincoln,” said Coach Jordan Doty.

Kings Mountain was scheduled to go to Crest yesterday and will travel to Lincolnton today. The Lady Patriots will host Chase on November 25.

Although there was a lot of disappointment following Friday’s loss to a good West Henderson team in the opening round of the state playoffs, Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers won’t be down for long.

After a holiday break, Coach Greg Lloyd said his team will be right back at work preparing for some more good years to come.

Kings Mountain loses 14 seniors off this year’s team, and some of them were three-year starters. But with

a good nucleus coming back next year as well as some good prospects coming up from the JVs and middle school teams there’s high hopes for the future.

“We made a lot of progress this year,” Coach Lloyd said, “and we have a lot of guys coming back. We had a good JV team and the middle school had a good year.

“Things didn’t go our way last week,” Lloyd said.

“It was unbelievably cold and their (West Hender-

son’s) offense is more suited to that kind of weather than ours’ is.

“But we’re not making excuses; we have a very positive feeling about next season.”

Lloyd said the coaches and players will get away from football for a while for a much-needed rest, but they’ll be back in the weight room after the Christmas break getting ready for next season.

“We’ll get the younger guys stronger and develop a

positive attitude for next year,” he said. “We will have a new non-conference schedule next year. We’ll play North Gaston and East Gaston for sure, and we’ve talked to a couple people about the third game.”

The Mountaineers’ turnaround – finishing 8-4 after going 2-9 last year – was one of the best in the state.

A one-yard run by Goings pushed the West lead to 28-13 at halftime, and touchdown runs of three yards by Fender and 18 by Jackson ran the margin to 41-13 with 2:54 left in the third quarter.

Jackson finished with 180 yards on 19 carries, Goings 176 yards on 32 carries and Fender 109 yards on 14 carries.

Kings Mountain tacked on two more touchdowns, and had a golden opportunity to score another when a wide open hook and lateral was fumbled.

Tico Crocker caught a 10-yard touchdown pass with 12 seconds left in the third quarter to cut the margin to 41-20, and Merchant closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter when he stripped the ball from a West back and ran it 60 yards for the final touchdown with seven minutes remaining.

Late in the game he had a 58-yard reception but the Mountaineers’ final pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

“It just didn’t go our way,” said Coach Lloyd.

“We had a good week of practice but just didn’t have a good game. But no excuses. We have a lot of positive feelings about this season.”

Said Shortlidge, “The City of Kings Mountain has been so welcoming and we are so excited to build a relationship with Kings Mountain through both the agreement and the new plant.”

“We have a great team in our staff, the best in the world," said Murphrey.

“This is the largest project for the citizens that I have been involved with during my 21 years with city government, I am just so excited."

Energy Services Director Nick Hendricks played a major role in the city deciding to move to a new energy company and in negotiations with NTE and Duke Energy throughout the process.

Hendricks said at last week's work session that he and city officials have spent the past four years weighing the options. Those options were staying with Duke Energy, building the city's own generator plant or finding a new supplier.

Hendricks said the decision came down to staying with Duke Energy or moving to NTE. After comparing various contracts with several other electric suppliers and how they would impact the city over a 10 year period Hendricks recommended making the switch to NTE. Hendricks' decision is backed both by Murphrey and City Manager Marilyn Sellers and by the unanimous

vote of city council.

“As long as I have been city manager, my charge to staff has been to bring me projects that will produce additional revenue and/ or savings to the city, but I also wanted assurance that our service to our customers would remain reliable and dependable," Sellers said at the Nov. 11 work session.

Sellers said that the agreement executed Nov. 13 meets that criteria. Murphrey and Shortlidge agree.

“This agreement is a catalyst to position Kings Mountain for future residential and industrial growth promoting new job opportunities," said Murphrey.

The city's current supplier, Duke Energy, will continue to provide electrical demand through the year 2018.

“This is big," said the mayor, who said a future industrial park is also in the works on KM Energy property.

Both the mayor and NTE's Shortlidge said the agreement signed Nov. 13 is a win/win situation.

Shortlidge said that his dream five years ago was to build NTE on strong community relations. In February NTE announced that Kings Mountain Energy Center would be built at Dixon School Road and I-85 south of the city.

“This is a strong project and two years ago we starting designing it and Nick Hendricks was one of our strongest advocates," Shortlidge added.

It was while the city was looking into the option of

building its own generator that NTE proposed they be allowed to look into building an energy center outside the city. After developing their plan, NTE determined that they were interested in building the plant whether the city decided to make NTE their energy provider or not. Once the city decided that it was in their best interest not to build their own generator, they were excited that NTE wanted to buy land and build. ''It has taken a lot of hard work by Nick Hendricks, his staff, and city officials but we hope this 20 year contract will last longer and you have helped my dream to develop clean energy service to come true," said Shortlidge.

He added, “April 1, 2015 is when I want to put a shovel in the ground.”

County Commission Chairman Jason Falls said the announcement by NTE and the agreement signed by the city and NTE ''strengthens us as a innovative county.” He introduced commissioners Susan Allen, Ronnie Hawkins, Johnny Hutchins, vice-chairman Eddie Holbrook, and County Manager Jeff Richardson.

Shortlidge said the Kings Mountain Energy Center, expected to be completed by 2018, will benefit the community by bringing jobs – 250-350 construction jobs and 25-30 full time employees when the plant becomes operational in January 2018.

“These will be good paying jobs," he said.

NTE has purchased 290 acres of land off the access road at Dixon School exit

at I-85, of which 20 acres will be developed for the energy center. Officials have said the remaining acreage is planned for an industrial park and that once completed the Kings Mountain Energy Center would be capable of powering 400,000 homes.

Challenges, Hendricks and the mayor said, are bound to come with transitioning from a 108-year energy relationship to a new one. They affirm city staff and the staff of NTE are willing to put in the work it will take.

The city will be selling all four utilities to the new company which will become the city's biggest water customer at 1-2 million gallons usage projected daily. The new plant has asked for voluntary annexation which would significantly expand the tax base to $1.5 million per year.

Why did the city choose NTE? These were the points that the mayor brought out in the announcement statement: • Gas generation- cleanest, most efficient source of energy, reducing our carbon footprint, 60% less emissions than that of older, more conventional sources of base load power.

• New rates provide a 29% cost savings -$4-$5 million savings per year. • City will provide the power plant all domestic, electrical and natural gas load. • Rate stabilization - public/private investment- future KM Energy Services Operation Center and a future Industrial Park • Enhanced infrastructure extended to the Southeast region of the city and county.

My first and main concern is with the issue of the opinion of the city attorney. I’m fairly sure he referred to Amendment One of our U.S. Constitution when he said “establishment clause”. My question for the attorney is, how can there be an establishment of religion by the city if the city didn’t start the church, doesn’t fund the church, doesn’t require it’s citizens to attend the church at all, let alone as the only church, doesn’t set the worship rules for the church? Part of this same concern is do we have elected officials that are willing to bow to that type of opinion?

The next part of my concern is the apparent lack of communication between the city manager, the mayor and the council. In more than one meeting the mayor says

“we need to go about the business of running the city. How will that be accomplished without proper notification among the council?

My second concern, still connected to the first is that if we as citizens can’t demand that our city officials honor our rights to worship, how will we ever be able to accomplish that with our state and federal government.

Just a few more questions that I’d like answered. Who determines how long is temporary when a city owned building space is rented?

What is that time if it has been determined and set? Was there other spaces available from the city that could have been offered as an alternative during construction? If the council was told as long ago of the issue as was stated, where is that recorded and why not let the public see? If the insurance question during construction was an issue did anyone consider asking the church to cover personal liability during that period? If the insurance

question was about Sundays and no city employees there why did it take 3 + years to discover that? Why did the city manager, the mayor and council not know about the rentals?

Is that another communication issue?

I believe it was President Truman that said “The buck stops here”. He was wrong, the buck stops with us, the citizens. We have the power to stop and override this madness.

I was fortunate Thursday evening to be at the Gaston County Commissioners meeting where they proved communication happens and they proved they are not afraid to stand up for right. They issued a resolution standing with the wishes and rights of the people and rights to bring their faith in God with them to meetings. We can and should expect the same from our city and our county.

This years’ tree lighting, with help from Santa, will reveal a newly redesigned lighting pattern. In case of rain, the event will be moved inside the Central United Methodist Church fellowship building.

Prior to the tree lighting a block down from the library the Historical Museum will host a special night run of the trains from 5-7 p.m. as part of their Toys, Games and Trains exhibit. The program is free to the public.

In the wake of Hayden’s strong interest in model trains, which got into high gear last year, his father Russell has also joined the Piedmont S-Gaugers.

“It’s great to have him join us,” said Pete Hillenbrand, a longtime S-Gaugers member who lives in Charlotte, referring to the young Gleason. “His enthusiasm is highly contagious.

He’s the best thing to happen to the club in a long time.”

The Toys, Games and Trains exhibit is the historical museum’s most popular exhibit every year, and for its debut this weekend crowds were already pouring in, according to museum staff.

“For adults it brings you back to being a kid,” said Karen Rice, a part-time museum employee who teaches history at Crest Middle School. “For kids it’s a lot of fun because of all the lights and sounds and noises.”

“Parents and grandpar-

ents will enjoy reminiscing with the children about the toys and games of their childhood, such as cowboy memorabilia, doll houses, marbles, and board games,” said KMHS director Adria Focht. “Bring your cameras – this exhibit provides great opportunities for holiday family photos."

In association with the Kings Mountain Woman’s Club’s Breakfast with Santa (starting at 7:30 am) and Mauney Memorial Library & Gaston Dance Theatre’s reading of The Nutcracker (starting at 10:00 am), the Toys, Games & TRAINS exhibit will be open starting at 7:00 am on Saturday, November 22.

The Museum will also host a special night run of the trains from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 24, before the City of Kings Mountain’s Children’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

The Toys, Games and Trains exhibit runs through January 3. The hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. All exhibits and events at the city-maintained historical museum are free of charge, but donations are welcome.

KMPD: Honor Guard – specially trained for special events From Page 1 service at Patriots Park, Myers enlists four men to present the colors. Those four are designated as the KMPD Color Guard.

“It’s kind of set up and structured like a para-military group," said Myers, whose beat comprises Moss Lake. “We train in marching and the handling of weapons, and standing by.”

Myers said the city calls on the Honor Guard to perform its duties five or six times a year. The group is also available by request to present the colors at the funeral of a retired or former police department employee, or at the memorial service of an officer who has been killed in the line of duty.

“The Honor Guard is really about a show of respect – and we train to that high standard,” said Myers, who joined the KMPD full time in 1990 after serving with the department on a reserve basis for several years.

Myers reports to Patrol Capt. Jerry Tessneer, who approves the use of the Honor Guard in all instances. Membership in the Honor Guard is open to both men and women, but despite his best efforts, Myers said no female officer has ever joined the special corps.

So what’s on the horizon for the Honor Guard?

Myers said he’s trying to find money in the budget for new uniforms, which he said don’t come cheap.

“I flaked out when I saw the cost of some of the

items,” Myers said, adding that a full new uniform runs in the neighborhood of $1,100.

But Myers and others think it’s worth it.

The presentation of the colors at city events adds a formality and touch of grace that is not seen in other cities.

“It adds quite a bit," said Myers, a Kings Mountain native who graduated from KMHS in 1957. “We get an awful lot of compliments. I take that as a feather in the cap, since I trained them.”

The presenting of the American flag, with this being such a patriotic city, adds an extremely important note to many of our events,” Ellis Noell, the city of Kings Mountain director of special events said. “Bob and the guys have done a great job.

They nail it.”

The members of the Honor Guard, including Myers, are Sgt. Todd McDougal, Commander (Res.) Tommy Bell, Cpl. Lance Hamrick, Cpl. Buddy Black, Cpl. Lee Putnam, Ptl. (K9 handler) David Warlick, Ptl. As far as Myers is concerned, he has no plans on retiring anytime soon.

“As long as I can handle the job, (KMPD Chief Melvin Proctor) said I could stay on as long as I want.

I’ve had no problem physically. Now, mentally, I don’t know,” he said with a chuckle.

‘Smoke Shop’ hopes to tap into e-cig market

Trupti Desai considers herself an “American success story.” When she moved to New Jersey from her native India in 1997, she had to borrow $50 to buy some clothes that were more suitable for her new country. Within a few years, though, she was thriving, having bought two convenience stores.

Desai said she didn’t get tired of the retail world or of being an entrepreneur, but she did get tired of New Jersey.

“It was too much traffic,” she said last week at her new KM business, which is called “Smoke Shop.” “Too much hustle and bustle. This is a much nicer, quieter part of the country, I think.” Desai is hoping to capitalize on a new kind of product that is seeing a surge in popularity these days: electronic cigarettes.

While not a smoker herself, she says she was careful in doing the research about that market in this area and found that there’s not a standalone shop that focuses on e-cigarettes and other to-

bacco-related accoutrements within 10 miles of hers. She also says she’s still learning about the rapidly expanding product line of gadgets, batteries and varying flavors that are use to help smokers transition from conventional cigarettes. Her store, which is located close to the corner of King St. and York Rd., sells flavors for e-cigs like juicy peach, pomegranate, strawberry, menthol, raspberry, mango and watermelon, among others.

“Smoke Shop” also sells a big line of ornate pipes, loose tobacco, cigarette-making machines, incense, unique wallets, body jewelry and cigars, complete with a small walk-in humidor.

Desai is also expecting to be set up as an N.C. Education Lottery retailer by Dec. 1. She said that business has been brisk and she’s already planning to expand her line of e-cigarette devices, for which she’s already installed new shelf space.

Desai also sells body oils with scents such as sage, coconut and soda pop, and burning oils in different scents like lavender, frankin-

cense and jasmine.

The store’s hours at the moment are 8 a .m. to 8 p.m.

Monday through Friday and 10 to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.

Desai said she’s still settling in and, based on traffic, may tighten her hours to 9 a.m. to 7 p.m on most days.

When Grapes in a Glass opened its doors a year ago, owner Kenny Richardson said he knew that many people never thought it would last.

A wine shop? In Kings Mountain?

But in that time it’s done more than merely survive.

The cozy shop on E. Gold St. has thrived under the strength of wine-tastings, beer-tastings and fun parties featuring live music, and has become a major weekend and evening destination for vino lovers in town. And last Thursday, less than a month after expanding into a neighboring space, Kenny capped off what he called a great first year by throwing a oneyear anniversary party for his business.

So many of his customers turned out for the bash to nosh on wraps, cheese, grapes and dessert items that the store was filled close to capacity leading up to a big champagne toast, where Richardson thanked the city and its people for helping make my dream come true.

“I truly couldn’t have done it without you,” he told the big crowd.

It was a big week for Grapes in Glass. On Tuesday, it hosted a birthday party for former mayor Scott Neisler, which drew in more than 100 revelers. Then, on Saturday, another big bash as many came to surprise Richardson for his own birthday.

On the night of the business’ one-year anniversary, Richardson announced another new development. He’ll soon be tearing down a wall that separates the wine shop from its new neighbor to the left, the Gentle Moon Café, so the two can form a partnership. Gentle Moon Café, which is owned by Betsy and

The restaurant is hosting a Tea Time and Talk on the first Tuesday of every month from 7 to 10 p.m. It will feature guest speakers each month chatting about becoming healthy. And every Thursday night from 6 to 8 p.m. it’s hosting a knitting and crochet group. It’s a group session open to all ages and all levels of learning.

The Kukulkas operated a pizzeria in the Buffalo, N.Y., area for 30 years before retiring and selling the business a few year ago. They moved to Kings Mountain to be near some family members a few years ago before jumping back into the restaurant business.

Parking just got a little friendlier for downtown

businesses along that stretch of Gold St. What was six parallel parking spaces were last week converted to 10 diagonal spaces. The transformation came about somewhat serendipitously when water line repairs shuttered the street for about a week this spring. One day during that time, “Grapes” owner Richardson parked in front his store diagonally. City employee Ellis Noell followed suit and had a brainstorm. He snapped a picture and pressed city administrators to carve out diagonal lines to replace the parallel spots.

The wine bar offers free wi-fi and an inventory of wines that span the globe and micro-brewed beer from Asheville to New York State.

It also sells a host of accessories, like bottle stoppers, candles, mulling spices, gift baskets large and small and cordless wine openers.

Future home of O’Reilly Auto Parts Workers toil on the future site of a new O’Reilly Auto Parts store on Shelby Rd. Creative Structures, out of Knoxville, Tenn., is the general contractor for the project, which got under way in late October. The job’s superintendent Steve Holder said last week workers were prepping the slab floor so concrete could be poured. Holder, who has been

working with the construction company for 12 years, said that in that time period he’s seen the auto parts store grow from 900 locations in the U.S. to 4,000. It also has two locations in Gastonia and one in Shelby. The job is scheduled to be finished in February, with a projected store opening date of around March.

Contest Rules 1. The games listed by number in each advertisement correspond to the lines in the entry blank above. Some advertisements may contain more than one game. Simply write on the corresponding lines in the entry blank which team you think will win.

2. At the bottom of the entry blank is a Tiebreaker. In the space indicated, guess the total combined number of points that will be scored by both teams in that game.

3. A $50 prize will be awarded to the entrant (one winner only from combination of the Herald, Eagle, and Banner News) with the most correct predictions. In the event of ties, the tiebreaker will be used to decide the winning entrant. In the event the tiebreaker does not break the tie, the prize will be split.

East Elementary EAFK awards

Bolin’s Day Care celebrated Mountaineer Day recently in honor of the KMHS football program. Students wore Mountaineer T-shirts, football jerseys and cheerleader outfits. They also made black and gold pom-poms to cheer on their Mountaineers. Bolin’s students also learned about fire safety during fire prevention week including stop, drop and roll techniques, changing smoke detector batteries and how to call 911. Members of the KM Fire Department, including Sparky the Fire Dog, came to the campus for a talk and a demonstration.

Third and fourth grade recipients of awards for Confidence and Compassion East Elementary School held its first EarlyAct FirstKnights awards ceremony Friday, Nov. 14.

Medals and certificates were presented by Dame Queen Suzannah and Sir Jefferson for the character trait of Confidence to: Kindergartners Jayden Snyder, Kaylee Clary and Caleb Watts First graders Janyah Crawford, Dominic Davis and Parker Faircloth Second graders Teddy Brooks, Hunter Martin and Isiah Woods Third graders Riley Powers, Curtis Hall and Mason Weaver.

Fourth graders-who were also knighted, Jordan Ellis, Abby Latham and Nyirah Petty.

Medals and certificates for the character trait of Compassion were presented to: Kindergartners Brayden Biggerstaff, Layla Putnam and Elijah Perry First graders Ke'Ja Baker-Parker, Anna Reese Wooten and Abby Cody Second graders David Creighton, Jr., Brooke Hamrick and Thomas Fair Third graders David Creighton, Adam Harrelson

EarlyAct is sponsored by the Kings Mountain Rotary Club, and the curriculum is used daily by the staff at East Elementary.
