Burning ban in effect now Due to hazardous forest fire conditions effective 5 p.m.November 7, 2016 a burning ban has been issued by the NC Department of Agriculture for Cleveland County until further notice. This ban cancels all existing burning permits and does not allow any open burning during this period. At this time the Cleveland County Fire Marshal has prohibited any open burning in Cleveland County until this release is lifted at a later date. Veterans Day service Friday The annual community-wide Veterans Day service will be held Friday, Nov. 11, at Patriots Park and will begin with a parade of veterans and program participants from the War Memorial at 10:30 a.m. During the ceremony all veterans will be recognized. They will be asked to stand in front of the stage set up in the Park and give their name, rank, and years of service in the military. Mayor Scott Neisler will preside and give the welcome both at the service and at the parade sendoff and make opening remarks prior to the presentation of veterans. The Kings Mountain Police Department Color Guard, under the direction of Sgt. Bob Myers, will advance and retire the colors. KMPD Chief Melvin Proctor will give the invocation,

A fist bump or high five is Eddie Payne's trademark with some 300 students he sees every day at Kings Mountain High School. The students love him and he loves the students. “I look forward to school every day,'' says Eddie, 67, who lives 5 minutes away from KMHS and begins his bus route every day at 6 a.m. Eddie is a Eddie of all trades. Payne is the popular crossing guard at KMHS, a former custodian whose job was maintaining the baseball and softball fields. He's a school bus driver for 48 kids on his Grover route, a crossing guard at KMHS who tells every student he sees, “have a great day” and then there's the fist bump or the high five. “These kids are awesome,'' says Payne, who is popular at football games too. He's the man on the track cheering and ringing a

Fire Chief Frank Burns will lead the pledge of allegiance, and after the singing of the National Anthem the “toast to the flag” will be presented by Vietnam veteran and former Green Beret Abraham Ruff. Four white roses will be placed by Vietnam veterans at the wall which bears the inscriptions of those who have died in World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam as American Legion Post Commander Claude Pearson reads the “final roll call.” “God Bless America” will be sung prior to the red, white and blue wreath presentation by the mayor and Ruff. “Taps” will be played prior to the retirement of the colors by the KMPD color guard. The public is invited to join with Veterans groups to honor living veterans.

Steady stream of voters on busy Election Day Kings Mountain voters went to the polls Tuesday and election officials were expecting a busy day at the precincts. Ann Bennett, election judge at the KM South precinct at the Library, said a total of 5, 930 went to the polls in early voting last week at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Macey Bridges of Grover celebrated her 18th birthday by casting MACEY BRIDGES her vote for President of the United States at the early voting site in Kings Mountain. By the end of early voting on Saturday, a total of 28,959 people had cast their ballots in Cleveland County, which represents 45 percent of the 63,704

in as the polls opened at 6:30 a.m. and they expect a heavier turnout in the afternoon. She said voters must be in line at their precinct by 7:30 p.m. Due to the Herald’s press time, the election results will be published in next week’s issue.

Peter Pan musical

Three more KMLT shows The timeless story of Peter Pan, the boy who wouldn't grow up, plays again this Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m. at Joy Performance Center. It is an enchanting play and musical by a talented cast of young people ages 8-19 who bring this magical tale to life. Special Events Director for city is Christy Conner Christy Conner, 39, Children's Librarian at Mauney Memorial Library for 15 years, is the city's CONNER new Coordinator of Special Events. “My goal is to continue to serve the public in a greater

capacity and build positive relationships in the community to improve the quality of life for all our citizens,'' she said Monday. Over the years Christy has partnered with Special Events to grow several library/special events that carry the library message of literacy and fun. These include: Easter Egg hunt, Halloween parade, annual tree lighting,

and most recently the Earth Day and KM Historical Ghost tour events. Library Director Sharon Stack said that Christy's specific skills of creativity, enthusiasm, event planning, and attention to detail and most importantly her unique ability to build trusted positive relationships set her apart as a candidate for this position.
