A woman's perspective changes after breast cancer. Little things take on more importance and every day you count your blessings. Sandra Murphrey and Lisa Capps Proctor say that faith in God, their husband's strong and unwavering support and prayers from the community sustained them during a life-threatening illness. Mrs. Murphrey, wife of Mayor Rick Murphrey, is a 12-year survivor. Mrs. Proctor, wife of KMPD Chief Melvin Proctor, is a nearly sixyear survivor. A KMPD Sergeant, she fights cancer as aggressively as she fights crime. Both women said they had received a clean bill of
Woman's Club Festival today The traditional Woman's Club Fall Festival is underway today (Wednesday) at the Woman's Club, East Mountain Street. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and dinner will be served from 5:30-7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Take-outs are available. The Festival will also feature a Country Store with baked goods and decorative tables, plus crafts. Proceeds benefit Woman's Club scholarships to area young people.

Looking to avoid lines or planning on being out of town on Election Day? Early Voting begins tomorrow at the Cleveland County Board of Elections office on 215 Patton Dr. in Shelby. The hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it’s offered through Saturday, Oct. 31. The hours for Saturday are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lawmakers mandated that all local authorities offer early voting about 10 years ago. The idea behind it was to increase voter turnout. “It’s meant to give people an opportunity for cast their ballot early,” said Dayna Causby, the Director of Elections for Cleveland County. “And older voters sometimes say they don’t feel so well. So I encourage them to come in
on a day when they do feel well.” Causby said that past experience has shown that about 50 percent of all voting occurring during early voting, which is categorized as a kind of absentee voting. Election officials also say Early Voting (sometimes referred to One Stop Voting) eases a strain on election workers during Election Day itself, especially during presidential election seasons. Another bonus to early voting is that voters can make address changes instantly because at the main Elections Office site all the necessary files are on hand. “It used to be that you had to have an excuse to vote early,” Causby said. “Early voting has actually helped increase voter turnout.” Come Election Day, poll-

Body cameras are coming to uniformed police officers in the Kings Mountain Police Department. “We are here to celebrate, to some extent, the funding of body cameras to help protect the officers and the city,'' said David Huffman, Executive Director of the Governor's Crime Commission, to city officials Wednesday afternoon in the KMPD Training room. Huffman announced that KMPD will receive $50,000 worth of grants - $14,837 to purchase body cameras for uniformed officers and $35, 124 for the purchase of new laptop computers for the

It’s been a year in the making, but on Monday city officials gathered with donors and volunteers to officially open the 5,900 sq. ft. Dover Foundation Annex of the H.L. Patrick Senior Center, which features an upgraded computer services room, a walking track and new exercise facilities. Bank robbery suspect is still at large

SunTrust Bank in Kings Mountain was robbed Friday morning for the second time this year and the third time since 2013. Kings Mountain Police, investigating the robbery, ask that anyone with information call KMPD at 704-734-0444. The suspect is still at large as of Tuesday afternoon.
