KMPD promotes five officers

Fall drama opens Saturday First Baptist Church is presenting “The American Dream” as part of their Merge fall drama series and shows will be held beginning Saturday and Sunday this weekend and next, a dozen presentations in two weekends.

Veteran Kings Mountain Police Department Captain Jerry Tessneer was promoted to Assistant Police Chief and four other officers moved up in rank last week. The swearing-in ceremony was held at City Hall and Mayor Scott Neisler administered the oaths of office. Also sworn-in with new positions were Lieutenant Lisa Proctor, Lieutenant Chris Moore, Sgt. Buddy Black and Cpl. Bryan McGinnis. With their left hands raised and their right hands on the Bible, the five officers pledged to “faithfully perform their duties to the best of their abilities, while enforcing all laws, so help me God.” Members of their respective families were present for the ceremonies and a standing-room-only crowd witnessed the ceremonies. “Be the best you can be, you are the best,'' said Police Chief Melvin Proctor. Fall festival next Wednesday For 84 years the Kings Mountain Woman's Club Fall Festival has been a community institution. Next Wednesday, Oct. 19, the Festival opens at 11:30 a.m. for lunch until 1:30 p.m., a popular treat that features the best of home cooking, and also at supper from 5:30-7 p.m. “We are preparing for a wonderful fall festival this year. I hope that the community will enjoy the food, fellowship, displays and visit the country store,” says club president and festival chair, Ann Bennett. The Darin and Brook Aldridge Concert, originally scheduled for October 8 at 4 p.m. at the Kings Mountain National Military Park had to be postponed to October 22 due to Hurricane Matthew. This is a free concert to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service by the Kings Mountain National Military Park. The public is encouraged to attend to share in the celebration. The performance will take place in the park amphitheater at 4 p.m.

Electric crew in Lumberton restoring power Blue skies have returned to North Carolina but dangerous conditions still remain in some areas of the state, according to an electrical crew from Kings Mountain who are in Lumberton to help restore power. The city's Energy Services Director Nick Hendricks sent pictures Tuesday showing the after math of Hurricane Matthew of the

Lumberton area to City Manager Marilyn Sellers and Mayor Scott Neisler. More than 1500 people were stranded in Lumberton Monday following a levee break. Some of those people were on their roofs, waiting for help. Helicopters and boats were deployed to rescue those residents. Hurricane Matthew left behind flooding, power out-

ages and residents in need of being rescued from their homes. The death toll in North Carolina has risen to 11 from Matthew's aftermath. The Kings Mountain area received much needed rain last weekend which forced closing of downtown activities on Saturday morning. See more photos on page 10

Ghost Tour returns Friday The Kings Mountain Revolutionary Ghost Tour returns this weekend, Oct. 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. nightly, bigger and better, according to crowds who attended Saturday night’s opening event. Friday activities had to

be canceled due to rain, including the opening of the Ghost Tour, the Friday night football game and on Saturday the 14th annual Gateway festival. Heavy rains kept the crowds away Friday at the Kings Mountain
