Mark your calendars for Mountaineer Days Mountaineer Days, a two-day community-wide Heritage festival which drew record crowds to the city some years ago, replaces Gateway Festival in the Fall, and will be held Oct. 20-21 at Patriot’s Park and Amphitheatre. Christy Conner, Main Street Program Special Events Coordinator, said that plans are in the works for free fun and entertainment for every member of the family. “Mark your calendar now for the event,’’ she says. The event coincides with the date of KMHS Homecoming and the football game between the KM Mountaineers and Burns High Bulldogs. A big homecoming parade will

be held on Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. featuring pretty girls vying for the title of Homecoming Queen, the marching band, and others and will form on W. Mountain Street behind First Baptist Church, proceed down Railroad Avenue and end at Patriot’s Park. A Pep Rally will be held in the Amphitheatre and music will be provided from 2-6 p.m. on Oct. 20 and 2-10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21. There will be food, games, rides, contests and vendors and a Ghost Trail will be a feature of the Saturday activities. “We have many things planned for everyone’s enjoyment,’’ said Conner. The City of Kings Mountain sponsors the event.

Kings Mountain’s Energy Director Nick Hendricks and six other linemen from the city’s electrical department along with one lineman from Maiden are seeing first-hand the devastation of Hurricane Irma in Georgia and Florida. “We’re in Sarasota, Florida today (Monday) where 259,000 people were out of power at 8 a.m. this morning and where 10,000 linemen are working to restore power,’’ said Hendricks, also the city’s assistant city manager and an experienced lineman and head of the city’s electrical department for many years. The many crews that work together as a team were dispatched by ElectriCities of North Carolina in which the various cities are members of this agency. Last Wednesday the linemen crews from Morganton, Huntersville/Cornelius, Maiden, Gastonia, Concord, and Statesville met the Kings Mountain crew with trucks and equipment at 6:00 a.m. at the I-85 Truck Stop and departed for Covington, Georgia under the supervision of Hendricks. They restored power in five towns in the Atlanta area before departing for Jacksonville, Fla. on Friday and worked there until Sunday night and then traveled to Sarasota. They all hope to return to their homes this weekend. Working in the Sarasota area they encountered a lot of wind damage along with many items of concern including snakes and animals that were displaced due to the hurricane while bringing lights back to homes that have been in the dark for many days. “They are working long hours and some of our sleep time has been in a tractor trailer, 36 linemen to a trailer, and there are 10,000 linemen on the job” stated

Contract let Glenn Underwater was awarded the contract for $400,000 by city council last week for Moss Lake Dam repairs. “It’s just a matter of fixing old pipe, the dam is stable,’’ said Energy Director for the city Nick Hendricks. Dredging has been underway but six or seven more feet of silt remains to be removed. Equipment should be moving in sometime this week. The repairs are scheduled for completion in 30-45 days.
