A Time for Banding National Night Out

Rochford goes 'on air' with NASCAR driver by JACQUIE TAYLOR special to The Herald Brianna Rochford, Kings Mountain High School junior, and Ryan Reed, No. 16 NASCAR driver and winner of the Daytona Xfinity Series 2015, have two things in common: both are fighting Type I diabetes and both like racing and raising diabetes awareness. They got together at Seacrest Studios at Levine Children's Hospital with the goal to take awareness to the public along with Ryan's Mission about the disease both battle daily. “It was so cool to work

with Ryan at the hospital again,'' said an excited Brianna. Rochford has been a vocal advocate since diagnosed with Type I diabetes at age 6 and is a Youth Ambassador for the American Diabetes Association. She is the youngest keynote speaker at the Charlotte ADA Corporate fund raising event. But, her biggest joy is volunteering as a camp counselor for Camp Kudos, a non-profit camp organized in Charlotte and run by Dr. Mark Parker for children with type I diabetes. Ryan Reed was diagnosed with Type I diabe-

tes at age 17 after moving from California to Charlotte to surround himself with the racing community. He remembers being told he would never race again and instead of giving up he said “I was very fortunate to find a doctor who believed in me and who worked with a lot of athletes. He returned to racing behind the wheel of the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes/American Diabetes Ford Mustang for Roush Fenway Racing. National Night Out is a time for banding together and the community did just that last Thursday at Patriots Park. Police, firemen and emergency teams from Kings Mountain and all over the county showed their equipment and their care for citizens, talking with them and the crowds came. Shelby Police was also present at the event which was held two days after National Night Out in the county seat. Local police put off the local event for two days in order for the event to coincide with the Farmer's Market which has been held every Thursday this summer. Highlights of the event
