Philip Glover, Board of Education chairman, Shearra Miller, vice-chairman, and Roger Harris, member, gave the program in which the public attending may submit questions as well as those watching online via the county school’s website. “Our graduation rates are up,’’ said Harris who emphasized that preparing students for the future whether college, employment or the See GREAT, Page 7A

Sidney Roy Dixon is still putting his shears to work at the age of 95. The Kings Mountain barber operates his barber shop on Bethlehem Road two days a week on Wednesday and Friday and hasn’t raised his price from $9. Back when he was 14 years old he got a nickel a head to use his hand clippers on other young people in the community. He’s a people person

and loves talking to people, many of whom are regular customers in his chair in the shop he has owned and operated for 40 years. For 12 years, he was a hair designer. He was called “Mr. Sidney” and many of his customers were female. In 1964 the S. C. Cosmetology Show recognized Dixon for ‘’exceptional styling ability. Vivid demonstrations of current trends have been an immeasurable aid to hundreds of Southeastern hairdressers.’’ Dixon celebrated his

95th birthday Tuesday and he and his wife, Mildred, cut his birthday cake and shared it with other “walkers and talkers” at Cleveland Mall. Mildred walks 4-5 days a week and Sidney walks 2-3 days a week. On Thursday, they plan to celebrate the milestone again with the Men’s Bible Class of First Baptist Church. The Dixons have been active in First Baptist Church for over 35 years and Dixon has taught the Men’s Class for over 30 years. See DIXON, Page 3A

Blanton named “Clubwoman with a Heart”

After battling Leukemia

Life is good: Taylor (Ed. Note - Sydnee Radford’s senior project at Kings Mountain High School encourages organ donations. It was June 2013 when Taylor Faris Haraszkiewicz, then a 20-year-old bride, was diagnosed with acute Myeloid leukemia and in 2014 a 32-year-old European man became her successful match for a bone marrow transplant. Sydnee talked with Taylor this week about her life since the transplant.)

Lois Gamble Blanton is “Clubwoman with a Heart,’’ the annual award presented to a Kings Mountain member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ Kings Mountain Woman’s Club. The award was presented on behalf of the club by Club President Ann Bennett. The award is given to a clubwoman, who by her efforts, is an example of the “Heart of the Club.” It is not given based on community service or club involvement, but rather to the person who best exemplifies the words of the “Collect” for clubwomen.

By SYDNEE RADFORD “My life has been good and I definitely wouldn’t be here without my life-saving stem cell transplant,’’ said Taylor Faris Haraszkiewicz, who will be 24 years old in July, a woman upbeat after a challenge with a rare cancer that she didn’t fight alone. The Kings Mountain community rallied around Haraszkiewicz. Numerous fundraising drives were held. Local people between the ages of 18-44 held a “be the match” campaign and signed up for a donor registry, answered a few medical questions and had the inside of their cheek swabbed at American Legion Post 155 and Relay for Life. Taylor said the bone marrow drive was not only

tant in the Title I Reading Lab in 2006. She also drove the Grover school bus route for 10 years. Ramsey said her mother was a day care director and her influence with small children instilled in her the dream of becoming a teacher. “I pretended I was teaching a room full of kids and when dad came home from work he was my student and my best Christmas gift as a child was an overhead projector where I could write with special markers and “teach my father and sometimes he didn’t like the rules and that would lead him to a seat in the corner.” “I have a passion for teaching and and my job is a calling,’’ she said. Both Ramsey and Davis say that no two days are alike in their classrooms and the rewards of teaching are many. “The early years in school are so important and See TEACHERS Page 2A

“Lois Blanton is a picture of the model clubwoman,’’ said Mrs. Bennett. She continued, “Over the years Lois has proven to be ever faithful and true to the organization. She has rarely missed a meeting and rarely missed helping with any project the club undertakes. She is particularly appreciated for her many skills applied in our kitchen, the variety of items she contributed to bake sales, and her wonderful writing skills as club reporter.” Blanton is wife of Howard Blanton of Kings Mountain.
