Harris donates to Hospice House A pledge of $75,000 to the Testa Family Hospice House by John O. Harris III, President of Harris Funeral Home, will honor his grandparents, the late Senator J. Ollie Harris and Abbie Wall Harris of Kings Mountain. The annual check representing a portion of the total pledge was recently presented by Harris to Myra McGinnis, executive officer of Testa Family Hospice House and

Cleveland County Hospice. The Chapel was completed with the original construction. It has a beautiful view of the mountains to the west and has served as a peaceful place for families to gather. The Testa Family Hospice House opened in 2010 and has served more than 1,000 patients and their family members during the last six years.

Benefit Friday for Paige Beam Paige Beam, 10, a fifth grader at Kings Mountain Intermediate School, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia last month and is undergoing treatment. Kimberla’s School of Classical Ballet will hold a fundraiser for their former student on Friday, Jan. 20, from 4-8 p.m. at Advent Lutheran Church, 230 Oak Grove Road. Hot dog plates, which include two hot dogs, fixings, chips, dessert and drink will be available for $5 and those participating can dine in or take out their orders. Public hearing Jan. 31 A public hearing to rename Kings Mountain Boulevard from Shelby Road will be conducted by Kings Mountain City Council Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. at city hall. Mayor Scott Neisler has called for the public hearing after a member of the African American community suggested naming the boule-

vard after a prominent African American. City council set the public hearing at the December meeting. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has clarified that this is a local decision but does encourage community input and support. City Council makes the final decision. The public can nominate individuals mentioning the contributions that citizen has made.

Kings Mountain attorney Tim Moore was elected to serve a second term as Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives by lawmakers who returned to the General Assembly in Raleigh last Wednesday. Moore (R-Cleveland) accepted the nomination from Rep. Mitchell Setzer (R-Catawba), seconded by Rep. Jimmy Dixon (R-Duplin) and approved by a vote of the House. He had no opposition. The swearing-in ceremony was marked by pageantry, music, family and friends. Attending from Kings Mountain were Moore’s father, Rick

Moore, and Wayne King. Moore told The Herald, “Representing the people of Kings Mountain in the North Carolina General Assembly remains my highest honor. I could not serve as Speaker without the support and love of my friends and neighbors in Kings Mountain. KM Father-son to attend inauguration When Donald Trump is sworn in as the 45th President of the United States Friday at 12 noon from a platform on the west lawn of the US Capital in Washington, DC Wayne King and his eight-year-old son, Noah, will be in the seated section, not the normal standing area. “We are excited,’’ said King, long active Republican who is the Deputy Chief of Staff for US Congressman Mark Meadows Office which represents 16 counties in Western North Carolina. King’s son, Noah, a second grader at North Elementary, will have plenty to tell his classmates next week. The father-son from Kings Mountain were in Charlotte Oct. 14, 2016 and had their photograph taken

with Trump when he was campaigning in the area. The ceremonies at the nation’s capital begin at 9:30 a.m. and crowds will be gathering for hours to view the event. US Supreme Court Justice John Roberts Jr. will administer the oath of office. The Trump family and Vice-President Elect Mike Pence and family, as well as members of Congress and the US Supreme Court, diplomatic corps, and other guests, including Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in the general election, former President Bill Clinton, former President Jimmy Carter and former President George W. Keeping the dream alive A crowd estimated a 200 people paid tribute to the late Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday night at a City of Kings Mountain-sponsored event that participants focused on “Keeping the Dream Alive.” Rev. Dr. Benjamin Hinton, pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Gastonia, called King “a chosen vessel who God called at a critical time in history to fight for equality for all. We should not idolize the man but it is fitting to celebrate his life and legacy,’’ he said. Hinton used Psalms 1:21
