American Legion Post 155 first innaugural Stars, Stripes & Shopping fundraiser The American Legion Post 155 held its first innaugural Stars, Stripes and Shopping fundraiser on Saturday.

Organizer Pilar Anthony was grateful to all who participated.

“We thank the wonderful vendors who participated and shared your amazing products, crafts and businesses with our community. Your hard work and creativity and support helped make the event truly special,” she said. “We also want to thank all the shoppers

and community members who came out to shop local and support Kings Mountain American Legion. Your support means so much not only to the small businesses who participated but also to our legion.”

Anthony announced that this won’t be their last event of the year.

“We look forward to bringing everyone together again for another great day of community shopping and supporting the American Legion.”

KMPD partners with local schools and Safe Kids Cleveland County KMPD/FB Keeping our youngest passengers safe is a team effort.

The Kings Mountain Police Department is proud to partner with Safe Kids Cleveland County and some of our local elementary schools to provide seat belt and booster seat safety demonstrations for students and families during afternoon pickup.

Bethware Elementary and West Elementary have partnered with them to kick off this important safety initiative. As students are getting into their vehicles after school, KMPD’s team is helping families learn more about proper seat belt use, booster seat safety, and the simple steps that

can make a big difference in protecting children on the road.

Thanks to their partnership with Safe Kids Cleveland County, families will also receive helpful safety information and resources. In the coming weeks, we plan to rotate these demonstrations among all of our elementary schools, allowing us to reach even more students and families throughout our community.

They are giving a special shoutout goes to the School Resource Officers (SROs), who have done the legwork behind the scenes to coordinate with our schools and help make this initiative possible. Their commitment to our students extends far beyond the school day, and we appreciate their continued dedication to keeping Kings Mountain's children safe.

The City of Kings Mountain will continue their free September Nights concert series at The Gazebo in downtown Kings Mountain each Thursday, throughout the month September.

The first concert was held this past Thursday, September 3. Tangerine Trees performed for a good crowd.

All the performances will begin at 6 p.m., giving residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy live music in the heart of downtown while supporting local restaurants and businesses.

The remaining September Nights lineup includes: • September 10 — Stepside Deluxe • September 17 — Randy and Cindy Floyd with Gene Pharr • September 24 — Continental Divide “September Nights is a great way to bring people together downtown and celebrate the local music scene,” Event Coordinator Angela Padgett said. “We encourage everyone to make an evening of it by enjoying dinner at one of Kings Mountain’s restaurants before or after the performance.”

Mary Helen Alexander KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Mary Helen Alexander, 101, of Kings Mountain, NC, joined her Heavenly Father on September 5, 2026 at White Oak Manor - Kings Mountain in Kings Mountain, NC. She was born November 20, 1924 in Cleveland County, NC, daughter of the late Horace and Ethel Heavner Allman and was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years, Reverend Randolph Alexander. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Dean, Earl, and Carl Allman and two sisters, Frances Jones and Linda

Tammy was of the Baptist faith. She worked in textiles most of her life, dedicating many years of service to Ruppe Hosiery.

Tammy was an avid music lover, especially classic rock and roll from the 1980’s.

She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren.

Tammy will be missed greatly by all those who knew and loved her.

Mary Helen worked in textiles most of her life.

Along with her husband, she was instrumental in the founding of Holiness Christian Ministry in 1978 which was dedicated to serving the community and sharing God’s love. Mary Helen was devoted to the church and assisted in every aspect of church life. She taught Sunday School, led worship, witnessed to countless people and any other task that needed completed. She will be lovingly remembered for her unwavering faith, generous but fiery spirit, kind heart, and deep love for her family.

Helen leaves behind a beautiful legacy through her children, grandchildren. great-grandchildren, and the many lives she touched throughout her journey.

Helen’s life was a testament to faith, love, family, and faithful service. Her legacy will continue to live through the generations who were blessed to know her love.

She is survived by her children: Gail Stamey (Danny), Kings Moun-

Cleveland Community College, as part of the Cleveland County NCWorks team, has been supporting the workers affected by the layoffs at Electric Glass Fiber America/NEG as part of the state workforce system’s “Rapid Response” program.

The company filed what is generally called a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice with the state on July 6, stating that approximately 282 employees were set to lose their jobs. That notice triggered planning for the response. This included organizing three Rapid Response events, on July 24, Aug. 7 and Aug. 12, with representatives participating from NCWorks, Cleveland Community College and the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Divisions of Workforce Solutions and Employment Security. At these events, workers learned more about resources and services that could help them through their career transition.

NCWorks partners worked closely with offi-

cials from the company to organize the events, with the employer providing contacts for people who could speak to their workers about issues like insurance, 401(k) rollover and investment advice.

Also as part of the response, the NCWorks team, including Foothills Workforce Development Board and economic development partners, held a job fair on Aug. 6, with a total of 44 employers participating, in order to let the workers know about potential new job opportunities in the region. The state Division of Workforce Solutions deployed the NCWorks Mobile Career Center unit to support this job fair.

The Cleveland County NCWorks Career Center continues to stand ready to help workers with finding new jobs and training opportunities. Those affected by the layoffs may be eligible for a federal resource called the Workforce In-

novation & Opportunity Act (WIOA) Dislocated Worker program, which can pay for certain types of training and other career services.

Cleveland Community College offers short-term job training programs that can help workers gain new skills and discover new career opportunities. Employers in these industries work closely with the College leading to employment for many students immediately after completion of a program.

Pieces of Kings Mountain History Kings Mountain has a long tradition of outstanding athletes, and Dremiel LORETTA “Bam” Byers COZART certainly deserves a place among them.

From the wrestling mats at Kings Mountain High School to World Championships and two Olympic Games, Byers built a career that places him among the finest Greco-Roman wrestlers in American history.

And it all started right here in Kings Mountain.

Byers wrestled for the Mountaineers under Coach Steve Moffitt. Years later, Byers credited his high school wrestling coach with helping set him on the path he would follow.

Speaking with USA Wrestling in 2003, Byers said Moffitt had “planted the seed of wrestling” in him and that many of the good things in his life were tied in some way to the sport.

In 1993, Byers reached the top of North Carolina high school wrestling, winning the state heavyweight championship and earning All-State honors.

It was quite an accomplishment for the young Mountaineer, but it turned out to be only the beginning.

Following high school, Byers attended North Carolina A&T State University on a football scholarship.

He later left college to handle family matters and enlisted in the United States Army.

Although Byers had

been a state champion wrestler, Greco-Roman wrestling was new to him.

After joining the Army, he became part of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program in 1996 and began building a career in international Greco-Roman wrestling.

It didn’t take long for people to take notice.

By 1999, Byers had won the U.S. Nationals and World Team Trials and earned a spot on his first U.S. World Championship team. He finished sixth in the world and was named USA Wrestling’s Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year.

Then came 2002.

At the World Wrestling Championships in Moscow, Russia, Byers defeated Hungary’s Mihaly Deak-Bardos to win the Greco-Roman World Championship at 120 kilograms.

Just nine years after winning a state championship for Kings Mountain High School, Dremiel Byers was a World Champion.

But he wasn’t finished.

Byers returned to the World Championship medal stand in 2007, winning bronze and helping the United States capture its first Greco-Roman World team championship.

In 2009, he added a silver medal in Denmark.

With gold, silver, and bronze World Championship medals, Byers became the first American Greco-Roman wrestler to win a World Championship medal of every color.

He also achieved another dream — representing his country in the

Olympic Games.

Byers competed for the United States at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and again at the 2012 Olympics in London.

Back home in Kings Mountain, Dec. 1, 2012, was proclaimed Dremiel Byers Day, honoring their hometown athlete’s remarkable achievements.

Byers celebrated the occasion with friends, family, and supporters, signing autographs at 238 Cherokee Grill.

By the end of his international career, the former Mountaineer had represented the United States on eight World Championship teams and two Olympic teams.

He won six gold medals and 11 medals overall at the prestigious Dave Schultz Memorial International and was named USA Wrestling’s Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year three times — 1999, 2002 and 2009.

Meanwhile, Byers served his country.

He rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class in the United States Army and later served as an assistant coach with the Army’s World Class Athlete Program, helping develop another generation of wrestlers.

The honors continued after his competitive career. Byers was inducted into the Alan and Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions in 2015 and the Cleveland County Sports Hall of Fame in 2018.

Then came one of wrestling’s highest honors.

The demented woman was shot by police and killed but her surprise attack injured one woman while killing another.

So often, it is the surprises that we can’t handle.

A motorist who is drinking intoxicated. The surprise medical report. A financial surprise that drains us and many more.

Typically, if we know, we can handle the situation. We can move to higher ground, or take shelter. We can try to avoid bad people if we know where they are and what they are up to. We can seek medical care if we have advanced information. What brings us the most grief is when we are surprised.

May we all remember the families impacted by these deadly events. May we be very aware that we are not immune to such events and live our lives prayerfully and as intuitively as possible.

I love the honesty of scripture. The Bible doesn’t tell us that Jehoshaphat was too spiritual to be afraid. It says: He feared. But look at what he did next: “…

Organizer Pilar Anthony was grateful to all who participated. “We thank the wonderful vendors who participated and shared your amazing products, crafts and businesses with our community. Your hard work and creativity and support helped make the event truly special,” she said. “We also want to thank all the shoppers and

community members who came out to shop local and support Kings Mountain American Legion. Your support means so much not only to the small businesses who participated but also to our legion.”

Anthony announced that this won’t be their last event of the year. “We look forward to bringing everyone together again for another great day of community shopping and supporting the American Legion.”

JV football team claims second straight win

By Jimmy Black The Kings Mountain JV football team is doing a great job on defense! For the second week in a row, the JV Mountaineers shut out their opponent as they defeated the Bandys Trojans at home by a score of 34-0 on Thursday, September 3.

The win improved Kings Mountain’s record to 2-1.

Bandys fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Next Thursday, the Kings Mountain JV team will travel to Charlotte to take on the Catholic Cougars in a non-conference game. Bandys will also be on the road as they travel to East Lincoln to take on the Mustangs in a Western Foothills 4A/5A matchup.

Both games start at 7:00 pm.

The Kings Mountain Mountaineers made quick work of the Bandys Trojans on Friday night, September 4 in Catawba. The Mountaineers scored 3 touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 21-0 lead on their way to a 43-7 victory. With the win, Kings Mountain improves to 2-1 on the season while Bandys drops to 1-1.

The Mounties were led by their sensational freshman quarterback Jordan Jenkins. He was 15 of 18 in the passing department for 306 yards and 5 touchdowns, and he had 4 rushing attempts for 41 yards which led the team. Jenkins also scored a touchdown on the ground. Kings Mountain led 37-0 at halftime, and 43-0 at the end of the third quarter before Bandys scored their lone touchdown with 5 minutes remaining in the fourth period on a 40 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mason Houston to wide receiver Ryder McClure. This was the second straight game that the Mountaineer defense gave up only 7 points to an opponent.

KM volleyball picks KM men’s cross up second win of season country takes second victory in a row; women finish fourth

By Jimmy Black A little hot weather did not slow down the Kings Mountain men’s cross county team on Tuesday, September 1.

The temperatures were in the 90’s, but the runners were even hotter!

The Mountaineers placed three runners in the top three positions at the Big South 5A/6A Conference Meet at the Forestview XC Course in Gastonia.

The Kings Mountain runners finished first in the team competition with a score of 29, far ahead of the Forestview team that came in a distant second with a score of 83.

David Johnson finished first for the Mountaineers with a time of 19:30.22.

Luke Howell came in second with a time of 19:49.77, and Kaiden Hawkins finished third with a mark of 20:26.77.

Emerson Bishop had a time of 21:18.93 which was good enough for tenth place giving Kings

Mountain a total of four of the top ten finishers in the race. This race was a 5K event.

On the women’s side, the Kings Mountain Girls placed fourth in the competition with a team score of 97. The top Mountaineer runner was Alyson Shelton who came in 28th place with a time of 32:20.64. Charlee Ward finished 31st with a time of 33:39.11. Nakadance Early came in 33rd with a mark of 34:15.80.

Jazmine Wilson finished 34th at 34:30.90 and Naomi Zuniga came in 35th with a time of 34:45.48.

There were 11 men’s teams in the event, along with 10 women’s teams.

Coach Drew Howell of the Mountaineers was very pleased with how the results came out on both the men’s and women’s side! Here are the individual and team results from the competition.

By Jimmy Black The Kings Mountain women’s volleyball team rolled to their second win of the season on the road on September 3 in Dallas against the North Gaston Wildcats.

The Mountaineers won the match three sets to none (2515, 25-21, 25-7).

For Kings Mountain, Alana Laughridge had 7 digs and 3 aces; Coleman Lane had 7 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks; Caroline Lane had 8 kills; and Georgia Cruise had 5 aces in the victory. The Mountaineers now sit with a record of 2-7 while North Gaston drops to 1-7.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, September 1, Kings Mountain battled the Davidson Day Patriots to the very end at home before finally coming up just short in a three sets to two loss (25-17, 27-25, 23-25, 8-25, 10-15). Davidson Day is a very strong team as their win-loss record of 9-1 indicates.

For the Mountaineers, Coleman Lane had 6 kills and 4 blocks; Campbell Benton had 8 kills, 5 blocks, 5 digs and 4 aces; Caroline Lane had 3 kills, 2 blocks, 5 digs and 2 aces; Kaylee Mull had 19 assists, 5 aces and 5 digs; Georgia Cruise had 4 kills and 6 digs; and Avery Cruise had 3

kills and 9 digs.

For the Patriots, they were led by Avayah McKinnon who had 15 kills, 2 blocks, 20 digs, 25 assists and 5 aces.

Men’s soccer drops pair of games at home last week

By Jimmy Black It’s been a tough season so far for the Kings Mountain Men’s Soccer Team.

Last week they dropped two games at home. On Monday, August 31, the East Henderson Eagles defeated the Mountaineers by a score of 5-3. Then on Wednesday, September 2, the Kings Mountain squad dropped a close match to the East Rutherford Cavaliers by a score of 1-0. The Mountaineer’s record now stands at 1-7-1 on the year.

In the match against East Henderson, the Mountaineers couldn’t quite keep up with the Eagles as they lost a

shootout by the score of 5-3.

Kings Mountain was led by Diego Quirante who had 2 goals and 1 assist. Ashton Hall and Bryan Ulloa also scored goals against the Eagles. Hudson Houston chipped in with 1 assist.

For East Henderson, Brayan Rodriguez led the charge by scoring 2 goals.

Andres Osorio, Bryan Chavez and Luis Monter all had 1 goal and 1 assist in the contest. Alan Resendiz Monter also contributed an assist. The Eagles improved to 2-5 on the season with the win.

KM Optimist youth sports experiencing major resurgence From Kelly Pearson

A major milestone came in Spring 2026 when KMO added baseball and softball.

The expansion included renovating the baseball field at Grover Town Park, including new dugouts, bases, and extensive landscaping, while also improving fields at Patterson Grove Baptist Church and Freedom Christian Assembly.

KMO is also bringing unique opportunities to local children. This summer, the organization hosted an MLB Pitch, Hit and Run event at Grover Field and brought the Carolina Panthers Play 60 program to Shu Carlton Stadium, where more than 60 children participated.

After more than six decades of serving local youth, Kings Mountain Optimist Youth Sports (KMO) is experiencing a significant resurgence, bringing expanded sports opportunities, improved facilities, community programs, and renewed excitement to families throughout the area.

Chartered in 1961, KMO currently offers football, cheer, baseball, and softball. After facing significant challenges with funding and participation approximately seven years ago, a dedicated group of volunteers stepped forward to rebuild the organization.

Today, KMO has growing participation, full rosters, new sponsors, increased community involvement,

letic success is growing as well. KMO football teams captured championships in 2024 and 2025, and all three football groups are pursuing another championship run in 2026. The organization will also return to Tennessee in November for the Rocky Top International Tournament.

Behind the resurgence are countless volunteers, coaches, families, sponsors, churches, and community partners. Among those being recognized are longtime board members Shawn and Lavon Clark, who have dedicated 25 years to keeping KMO alive and helping guide the organization into its next generation.

Cali Boyce led the explosive offense with 138 rushing and receiving yards and three touchdowns, including two rushing scores and a 52-

yard touchdown reception.

Ki Homsley added a 52-yard touchdown pass and 50 rushing yards. Sahmir Patterson contributed two rushing attempts and a two-point conversion.

Defensively, Traquan Mintz led the way with five tackles, including a tackle for loss. Kendrick Halvorson added four tackles, while Timothy Tate recorded two tackles, including a tackle for loss, and a fumble recovery.

KM Elite 10U Junior Varsity Improves to 2–0 The KM Elite 10U Junior Varsity Trailblazers continued their undefeated start

with a dominant 24–0 shutout victory over the GYSO Huskies. Cole Smith opened the game with an electrifying 72-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and the Trailblazers never looked back.

Kam Fortenberry led the offense with 67 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Khamoni Marable added 65 rushing yards. Fortenberry also dominated defensively with four tackles, a sack, an interception and a fumble recovery, returning the fumble 45 yards for a touchdown.

The defense held GYSO scoreless behind strong performances from Khamoni Marable and Alijahjuan Bell, who each recorded six tackles, while Zy’Tim Cash and Brantley Parker added five tackles apiece.

How Families Can Find Lost Money After a Loved One Dies Dear Savvy Senior, After my mom passed away, we discovered a few small accounts and an old insurance policy we didn’t know she still had. It made me wonder how often families uncover forgotten or unclaimed money like this after a parent dies.

Is it common, and where should I start looking?

After a parent or spouse dies, families often come across small, forgotten accounts, uncashed checks, or old insurance policies that slipped through the cracks over the years. In many cases, paperwork was misplaced, accounts were opened decades ago, or loved ones simply weren’t aware the assets existed.

According to the National

Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, billions of dollars in unclaimed assets are currently being held by state governments and federal agencies, waiting to be claimed by rightful owners or heirs.

Unclaimed property usually comes from financial accounts or benefits that became inactive because the owner moved, changed names or died. In many cases, heirs were never aware the money existed or did not know where to look. These assets can include savings or checking accounts, uncashed dividend checks, utility security deposits, life insurance proceeds, pension benefits, tax refunds, matured savings bonds and unpaid wages.

By law, banks, employers, insurance companies

and other institutions must turn these assets over to the state if they cannot locate the owner or next of kin after a set period, usually two to five years. Once turned over, the money is held indefinitely, so there is no deadline for families to file a claim.

Where to start A good place to begin is MissingMoney.com, a free site endorsed by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators and the National Association of State Treasurers. It allows users to search for unclaimed property in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico at once. Hawaii is not included but can be searched through a link on the site.

When searching, check every state where your mother lived, worked or did

business. Be sure to search under maiden names, married names and common misspellings. Using just a first initial and last name can also uncover accounts that do not appear under a full name search. Each state’s site will indicate whether property is listed and explain how to file a claim.

Other places to check State treasuries are only part of the picture. Families should also check several other common sources of forgotten money.

Pensions and 401(k)s: To search for lost or forgotten retirement benefits your mom may have left behind with an old employer, use the U.S. Department of Labor’s Retirement Savings Lost & Found Database at lostandfound.dol.gov and the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement

Benefits at unclaimedretirementbenefits.com. Or to search for unclaimed retirement benefits from private-sector plans that have closed down, use the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation search tool at pbgc.gov/workers-retirees.

Savings bonds: It’s very common for people to lose track of U.S. Saving Bonds because they are often given to children as gifts, then forgotten before the bonds reach maturity. To find out if your mom had a Savings Bond or other Treasury security visit your state’s unclaimed property office using unclaimed.org. Search the state of residence at the time of the securities purchase or last known address.

Lost life insurance: To track down a lost or forgotten life insurance policy,

the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, an insurance regulatory support organization, offers a free policy locator service at eapps.naic.org/life-policy-locator.

Other refunds: To search for money left at an FDIC insured bank or credit union that has gone out of business, visit closedbanks. fdic.gov/funds. Federal tax refunds can be checked at irs.gov/refunds or by calling 800-829-1954. FHA mortgage refunds can be checked at entp.hud.gov/ dsrs/refunds. And unpaid wages are listed at dol.gov/ agencies/whd/wow.
