KM Historical Museum fundraiser a success The Kings Mountain Historical Museum (KMHM) extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make the Museum’s 23rd Annual Fundraiser, “It’s Going to Be… Revolutionary!”, a memorable and successful evening celebrating history, community, and the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the United States. Held Saturday, September 12, at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum, the event brought together Museum supporters, community members, history enthusiasts, and guests for an evening filled with food, music, fellowship, entertain-

ment, and plenty of revolutionary flair. Guests embraced the evening’s Outlander-inspired theme and had the opportunity to tour the Museum’s current exhibit, “Choosing Two Sides: Catawba Nation and the American Revolution,” enjoy a pop-up tavern, enter exciting raffle drawings, and admire the limited-edition handcrafted steins created exclusively for the Museum by local artist Susan Jones of A. Griffin Pottery. The evening also featured lively musical entertainment from Bottle of Smoke, whose blend of Celtic, bluegrass, and country music perfectly complemented the evening’s historical atmosphere. New exhibit at Southern Arts Society Three Voices, Three Views: Landscape Painters Kathleen McDermott, Kim Painter and Gene Tennison Southern Arts Society is honored to present the works of three local artists who all paint landscapes, working in a variety of media. These three artists each offer a distinct lens through which to experience their environment. Kim Painter, Kathleen McDermott and Gene Tennison all shared a love for art early on in their lives, taking time away – sometimes years - for work and family life, then later returning to painting to express how they see the world. Here, on canvas, they weave together three divergent styles, the meticulous clarity of realism; the lush, light-filled brushwork of impressionism; and the emotional resonance of semi-abstraction. They remind us that a landscape is more than a place. It is a feeling, a record of time, and a living dialogue between the land and the observer. Spanning over 60 works of

She shared her talents in many roles, including as a Sunday School teacher, President of Women Active In Christ, and serving on various committees. Carolyn was a gifted cook, baker, canner, and seamstress. She shared her homemade yeast rolls--a family favorite--strawberry jam, and canned pickles with church family and friends for decades. She was an attentive mother to “her girls,” as she often called them, and enjoyed being active in their activities over the years. Carolyn also had a special bond with her siblings Johnny and Elaine and they spent many holidays and birthdays together. health. Lyn was a remarkably independent, passionate, and deeply compassionate woman. She possessed a fierce resilience, successfully rebuilding her financial foundation from the ground up to achieve independence. Her capacity for empathy was endless; she opened her heart and home to care for her ex-husband during his darkest struggles, and she selflessly and tirelessly cared for her father during the final five years of his life. Her faith was equally multifaceted; she found joy in the contemporary worship at Oak Ridge Methodist Church, yet always held a deep appreciation for the ritual and tradition of St. Matthews Lutheran Church. She loved animals of all sorts: dogs, horses, and especially cats. In her earlier years she enjoyed horseback riding and waterskiing. Lyn loved to garden and work outside. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Tommy Stringfellow. She is survived by her

On October 24 Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) introduced H.R. 10580, the Let Americans Buy with Explicit Labeling Act (LABEL) Act, to require that country of origin and production method (wild or farm-raised) labels for fish be clearly displayed on the front of consumer packages through amending the Agricultural Marketing Act of 1946. “Every American deserves to know where their food comes from,” said Congressman Tim Moore. “The LABEL

Act helps ensure consumers have clear information about where their seafood was caught or raised and how it was produced, right on the front of the package.” Original cosponsors include Randy Weber (R-TX). This legislation was introduced in the Senate by Senator HydeSmith (R-MS) and cosponsored by Senators Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) and Adam Schiff (D-CA). The text is also included in the Agricultural Act of 2026.

This legislation also has support from the American Shrimp Processors Association (ASPA), Louisiana Shrimp Association, Southern Shrimp Alliance, and Organized Seafood Association of Alabama. Congressman Tim Moore represents the 14th Congressional District of North Carolina, including Cleveland, Gaston, Burke, and Rutherford Counties, as well as parts of Mecklenburg and Polk Counties. We want elevation without humility. We want resurrection without crucifixion. But there is power in dying first. Dying to pride makes room for humility. Dying to control makes room for trust. Dying to offense makes room for healing. Dying to comfort makes room for calling. It’s Development You and I cannot skip the burial season. If Jesus, the Son of God, embraced the cross before the crown, why would we expect another path? The burial is not

punishment. It is positioning. The dirt is not rejection. It is development. If you feel buried in this season - unseen, misunderstood, stretched - do not despise it. Buried is not the same as forgotten. Buried seeds grow roots before they show fruit. Roots determine longevity. When you decide to surrender all to him, then you can proclaim like Apostle Paul in Galatians 2:20 (AMP), “I have been crucified with Christ [that is, in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body I live by faith [by adhering to, relying on, and completely trusting] in the Son of God, who loved

me and gave himself up for me.” Pray This Prayer: “Father, I worship and adore you. Forgive me for putting myself above your desires. Please help me to have a pure and obedient heart. I surrender all to you today. Make and mold me into the person you want me to be. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.” CONNECTING TO GOD: If you’ve never established a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace today. Acknowledge your need for forgiveness and ask the Lord to cleanse you from all sin.

Turn away from behaviors and attitudes that separate you from God. Surrender your life completely to Him and invite Jesus to become both your Savior and Lord. Seek out a Bible-believing church where you can grow spiritually and serve others. Begin cultivating a meaningful relationship with God by setting aside daily time for Bible reading and prayer. KM men’s Cross Country team places second in conference meet

After an open date last week, Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers will hit the turf again Friday at 7 p.m. against the North Gaston Wildcats in Dallas. Kings Mountain goes into the game with a 1-0 Big South Conference and 4-1 overall mark. North Gaston is 0-2 in the Big South and 0-6 overall. The Wildcats are young overall with 18 sophomores, seven juniors and

just six seniors. They are led by senior quarterback Rylan Barber. He leads all rushers with 79 yards in 37 carries and has hit 15 of 32 passes for 246 yards. Kings Mountain will answer with a balanced offensive attack. Freshman quarterback Jordan Jenkins has passed for 13 touchdowns with Devin Hopper catching six, Nazire Davis three and Xavier Hutchens two.

Khareem Coleman leads the rushing attack with an average of 76 yards per game, followed by Jenkins with 39 and Daeshawn Camp 23. The Mountaineers will be back in John Gamble Stadium the following Friday to take on a tough Gastonia Ashbrook eleven. All conference games begin at 7 p.m.

By Jimmy Black The Kings Mountain Men’s Cross Country Team finished in second place in the Conference Meet it hosted on Tuesday, September 22. West Lincoln came out on top of the boys’ competition with a score of 37. The Mountaineers finished a close second with 48 points. Four out of the top eight individual runners were from Kings Mountain. The Mounties were led by David Johnson who narrowly defeated teammate Luke Howell for the individual honor. Johnson’s time of 18:33.5 just barely beat Howell’s time of 18:34.1. Also placing in the top 10 for Kings Mountain was Kaiden Hawkins who came in fifth place with a time of 19:30.2, and Peyton Hallman who finished eighth with a time of 20:05.7. There were nine men’s teams in the event. In the girls’ competition, South Point took home the team title with a score of 23. West Lincoln came in second with a mark of 33. Emma Waters from West Lincoln won the girls’ title. She had a time of 25:55.4 narrowly holding off Rowen

Mountaineer Women Cruise to victory over Forestview in tennis action By Jimmy Black The Kings Mountain Women’s Tennis Club continued their winning ways on Tuesday, September 22 as they hosted the Forestview Jaguars. The Lady Mountaineers thoroughly dominated the match and won by a score of 8-1. After the victory, the Kings Mountain squad sits with a record of 4-1 on the season and are in first place in the Big South 5A/6A Conference standings. Coach Rick Henderson

talked about the final week of conference play coming up. He said, “Our starters are going to have to stay healthy this week for us to close out our conference play. I’ve been saying all season that we have a real good chance of winning three consecutive conference championships, but we still have some unfinished business to take care of come Tuesday and Wednesday. But I have lots of faith in these girls because I know they’ll let their tennis racquets do the talking for

them!!!” The Lady Mounties were also scheduled to take on the Hunter Huss Huskies on Thursday, September 24, but that match got rained out. It has been rescheduled for today at 4:00 pm at home. The women played host yesterday to the Crest Chargers. We will have coverage of both the Hunter Huss and Crest matches in next week’s paper. See Results on page 2B

Men’s soccer drops pair Byrnes High School captures of games last week By Jimmy Black It was another tough week for the Kings Mountain Men’s Soccer Team. The Mountaineers dropped a pair of games last week. On Monday, September 21, Kings Mountain lost a heartbreaker at home to the Ashbrook Green Wave by a score of 3-2, and on Wednesday, September 23, the Mounties lost on the road at Forestview 6-1. Kings Mountain now stands at 2-12-1 on the season. In the matchup against Ashbrook, all the scoring was done in the first half. Juan Tinoco and Corbin Butler both scored goals for the Mountaineers, but

it wasn’t quite enough to overcome the Green Wave. Ever Guzman had five saves as goaltender for the Kings Mountain squad. For Ashbrook, they were led by Roosevert Norveus who had two goals and one assist. Others contributing for the Green Wave were Hamsley Lormejuste with a goal, and Carlos Hernandez and Jackson Purdum who each had an assist. With the win, Ashbrook now has a record of 2-8. Then on Wednesday, September 23, the Mountaineers traveled to Gastonia to face a well-rounded Forestview team. The Jaguars offense was too much for the Mounties in the 6-1 defeat. Forestview only

led 2-1 at halftime, but they scored four unanswered goals in the second half to wrap up the victory. The Jags were led by Justin Matinez who had a monster game with three goals, and by Zach Janik who had a goal and an assist. With the victory, Forestview now stands at 8-4 on the season. The Kings Mountain ball club heads on the road tonight to face the Crest Chargers at 6:30 pm. Then on Monday, the Mountaineers will go to Belmont to take on the South Point Red Raiders for a 6:30 pm contest. Forestview will also be on the road Monday night as they take on the Ashbrook Green Wave at 6:30 pm.

KM Invitational Volleyball Tournament By Jimmy Black Saturday, September 26 was a very busy day on the campus of Kings Mountain High School. The Mounties Volleyball team

hosted the Mountaineer Invitational with four teams battling for the crown. The four teams participating were the Gaffney Indians, the Blue Ridge Tigers, the James F. Byrnes Rebels,

Women’s golf match rained out last week By Jimmy Black The Kings Mountain Women’s Golf Team was scheduled to participate in a match at Forestview on Tuesday, September 22. Unfortunately, due to storms in the area, the match was postponed until Tuesday, October 13. The Ladies Team participated in a match this past Monday at North Gaston. On Tuesday, September 22, Kings Mountain took on a very powerful and talented South Point team. The Red Raiders came into the contest with a perfect conference record and an overall record of 16-5. The Mountaineers more than held their own in the contest even though they fell by a score of 3 sets to 2 (25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 10-15). Coach Derek Bing saw a lot of positives in his team’s play against South Point. This is what he had to say – “We had a close five set loss to South Point. We actually scored more points than them (105-102), but we could not close the second and fourth sets. We really played well and showed signs of tremendous growth. Really well played, high-level match on both sides of the net.” The Lady Mounties were led by Caroline Lane with 14 kills and 4 blocks. Georgia Cruise had a big match by contributing 5 aces, 6 kills,

10 digs, 2 blocks, and a great serve/receive. Ava Broome was also huge in serve receive and she had 21 digs, 6 assists, and 4 aces. Kaylee Mull had 40 assists, 2 kills, and 23 digs. Coleman Lane had 8 kills and 3 blocks. Campbell Benton had 8 kills and a block. Anna Laughridge had 12 digs, and Avery Cruise had 12 digs and 3 kills. For South Point, Olivia Easton had 30 kills and 17 digs. Adeleigh Hutcheson and Ella Aschmann had 13 and 9 kills respectively. Ava Cooper had 28 digs, Virginia Ernst had 21 digs, and Kerry Gozur had 10 digs. With the win, the Red Raiders improved their record to 17-5. South Point next faces Ashbrook on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 pm. For Kings Mountain, they next play tomorrow night on the road at Ashbrook at 6:00 pm. That will be followed up with another road contest at Forestview on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 pm.

SEPTEMBER 28, 2026

The Kings Mountain Homecoming parade was held on Friday, Sepember 18. These photos show some of the parade participants and many happy spectators.

Adopte shines as Runnin’ Bulldogs Battle to the Last Second at Marshall By Tony Venegas, GWU Assistant AD of Strategic Communication Giovanni Adopte turned in a career performance Saturday afternoon, but the Gardner-Webb football team fell just short in a 36-35 loss at Marshall at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Adopte hauled in seven passes for a career-high 179 yards and two touchdowns, while the Runnin' Bulldogs recorded a defensive touchdown for the third consecutive game. Cole Pennington finished the afternoon 22-of-33 passing for 298 yards and four touchdowns. Kory Jones added four receptions for 60 yards and two touchdowns,

while Christian Vann led the Runnin' Bulldogs on the ground with 99 rushing yards on 14 carries. The Runnin' Bulldogs jumped out to a fast start, taking the opening drive as Jones caught his first touchdown pass of the season from Pennington to jump out to an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter. After Marshall scored on its opening drive, it took all of one play for the Runnin' Bulldogs to answer as Adopte hauled in a 75-yard touchdown pass from Pennington to give the Runnin' Bulldogs a 14-7 lead. The junior receiver continued to make an impact throughout the afternoon, adding a 44-

yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter to give Gardner-Webb a 35-27 advantage. Marshall rallied with a pair of fourth-quarter scores, however, The Thundering Herd's final points came on a 32-yard field goal with just three seconds remaining, giving Marshall the narrow 36-35 victory. Gardner-Webb finished the afternoon with 458 yards of total offense, including 298 through the air and 160 on the ground. Adopte's seven receptions and 179 receiving yards both marked career highs, highlighting one of the most productive performances of his Gardner-Webb career.

Dear Savvy Senior, I’m taking care of my elderly father who recently had a stroke and have a lot of questions about how Medicare works and what it covers. He’s enrolled in original Medicare. Can you help me? --Caregiving Connie Dear Connie, Taking care of a parent after a stroke is hard enough without having to figure out Medicare too. The good news is that understanding the program can make life a lot easier. Knowing what’s covered – and what isn’t – can help you plan ahead, avoid costly surprises and make sure your father gets the care he needs. Here’s a practical guide to get you started. Medicare basics One of the best places to start is the official “Medicare & You” handbook. It explains benefits and services in plain language. Medicare mails an updated copy every fall, but you can also view it online at medicare.gov/ medicare-and-you. For questions, call Medicare at 800-633-4227 to speak with a representative. They can clarify coverage for doctor visits, hospital stays, home health care, and more. Your state’s State Health

Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is another great resource. SHIP counselors provide free, one-on-one counseling to help you understand your coverage, identify cost-saving programs, and answer questions about Medicare. Find a counselor near you at shiphelp.org or 877-8392675. Caregivers should also create a secure Medicare account at medicare.gov/ account/login. Once your father’s account is set up, you can review his coverage, track claims, check the status of medical services and prescriptions, and see which preventive benefits he’s eligible for. It’s an easy way to stay organized and keep all of your father’s Medicare information in one place. Choosing providers Medicare also lets you compare providers online at medicare.gov/ care-compare. You can search for doctors, hospitals, rehab centers, nursing homes, hospice providers, and medical equipment suppliers in your area. This is especially useful after a stroke, when your father may need rehabilitation or specialized care at home. Covered services Original Medicare covers many services your father may need, includ-

ing hospital care, doctor visits, lab tests, and outpatient treatments. It also covers home health care if your father is homebound, under a doctor’s care, and needs part-time skilled nursing or rehabilitation therapy, such as physical, occupational or speech therapy. Medicare also covers medically necessary durable medical equipment and supplies prescribed by a doctor, including oxygen, wheelchairs, walkers and catheters. Short-term skilled nursing care in a facility may also be covered for up to 100 days after a qualifying hospital stay. Prescription medications are generally covered through a separate Medicare Part D plan, which helps pay for many outpatient drugs your father may need. Hospice care is covered for patients with a terminal illness and a life expectancy of six months or less, as certified by a doctor. It includes nursing care, medications for comfort and short-term respite care to give caregivers a break. However, Medicare generally doesn’t pay for long-term custodial care at home, in an assisted living facility or in a nursing home. That

means it generally won’t cover ongoing help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, using the bathroom or supervision for someone with dementia. Routine dental care, dentures, eye exams for glasses and hearing aids are also not covered. Cost help If your father has limited income and resources, check programs that help reduce Medicare costs. Extra Help assists with prescription drug expenses, and Medicare Savings Programs can help pay premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance. Visit medicare.gov/basics/costs/help or call 800-633-4227 to learn more or check eligibility. Taking time to understand Medicare can make caregiving a little less stressful. It helps you stay on top of appointments, treatments and equipment needs, while giving you greater confidence that your father is receiving the care and benefits he’s entitled to. Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070.
