On August 28th, NC House Speaker Tim Moore, presented a $100,000 downtown redevelopment grant to the City of Kings Mountain during the City Council meeting. Funds were appropriated by the General Assembly in the state budget this year. “Cleveland County is a top-5 micropolitan region in the U.S. two years in a row, thanks to the successful collaboration of state & local leaders. This week I presented funds for downtown economic development to the Kings Mountain City Council to continue supporting economic growth,” said Moore.

mony, the American Legion Riders will serve lunch to local first responders, thanking them for their service to our community. This solemn anniversary is an annual commemorative service for those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

Sharon Eaker, Director of the Patrick Senior Center, began her career with the City of Kings Mountain as the City Hall receptionist hired by Marilyn Sellers and Mayor Kyle Smith. Six months later, she was promoted to the Kings Mountain Senior Center as the Administrative Assistant II/Bookkeeper by Monty Thornburg, former Director of the Patrick Senior Center. The Senior Center then was at the old Southern Railroad Station and was a unique place to work but was limited in space. As an Administrative Assistant, Sharon assisted the Director in the paperwork details of building the new Center. She published the newsletter and revamped it numerous times to what it is today. As bookkeeper, she strived to keep the Center See EAKER, Page 7A

Marilyn’s open for business Kings Mountain’s newest event venue, Marilyn’s, opened for business two weeks ago at 130 West Gold Street. The Kings Mountain Main Street Program, a 2018 Main Street America accredited program, welcomed Marilyn’s to downtown Kings Mountain. Marilyn’s is a new event venue and meeting space that can be rented from Larry and

Marilyn Benton, owners of KM Pickup Sports, for baby showers, bridal showers, painting parties, meetings, and more. Their first event is scheduled for September 5. “The City of Kings Mountain is a proud supporter of all businesses downtown,” said Sharon Robbs, director of the Main Street program. “The Main Street Program through its four-point approach and principles features committees that drive results in the downtown, which are economic vitality, design, promotion and organization. It is under these umbrella

issues that all downtown concerns can be addressed, and businesses can have a resource and a source of support that encourages success and growth in our thriving Downtown. “Anyone with ideas for downtown and would like to serve on one of the four committees should contact Robbs at 704-730-2197 or via email at sharon.robbs@ cityofkm.com. “Amazing things are happening in downtown Kings Mountain, the place where people come to shop, eat, and play,” Robbs said.
