THEODORE W. OHMAN — DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE Also on display is a 1942 Theodore W. Ohman lithographic restoration of the Declaration of Independence, donated by John B. and Sonja Houston. Ohman recreated the Declaration using an early photograph of the original parchment and the 1823 Stone engraving. Examples of his work are held by the National Archives, Library of Congress and Independence Hall.

Together, these exhibits help tell the story of American freedom — from Jefferson’s words declaring independence to the Carolina patriots who fought to preserve it at Kings Mountain.

The Kings Mountain Historical Museum invites the community to step into history for KMHM’s 23rd Annual Fundraiser, “It’s Going to Be… Revolutionary!” on Saturday, September 12, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the museum, located in the city’s former post office at 100 East Mountain Street, Kings Mountain, NC. This year’s fundraiser will recognize the 250th Anniversary of the United States, bringing together history, entertainment, food, music, and a stylish nod to the hit series Outlander, whose final season culminates with the Battle of Kings Mountain.

Congressman Tim Moore introduces Army Quantum Readiness Act to advance military technology Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) i n t r o duced H.R. 10130, the Army Quantum TIM MOORE Readiness Act on August 26, which would direct the U.S. Army to develop a longterm initiative to prepare for the integration of the next generation of military technology, including quantum computing, sensing, networking, and quantum-enabled AI. “America's adversaries are investing heavily in emerging

technologies, and we cannot afford to fall behind,” said Congressman Moore. “This bill supports the Army in preparing for the technologies that will define the future of national defense. By maintaining America’s technological edge, we can strengthen our cyber capabilities and ensure our military remains the most capable fighting force in the world.”

Specifically, this legislation: • Establishes the Army Quantum Readiness and Advanced Computing Initiative to prepare the Army for the integration of quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum net-

working, and quantum enabled artificial intelligence into future operations.

• Assesses the infrastructure needed to support these emerging technologies, including secure facilities, power capacity, cooling systems, and other operational requirements.

• Evaluates opportunities to accelerate the acquisition and deployment of quantum technologies for military applications.

• Develops a workforce strategy to recruit, train, and retain personnel with expertise in quantum technologies.

• Launches pilot demonstration activities for post quantum cybersecurity and re-

silient networking.

• Requires the Secretary of the Army to submit a comprehensive report to Congress within 270 days outlining infrastructure investment recommendations, workforce requirements, and any legislative authorities needed to accelerate the Army's quantum readiness.

Stars, Stripes & Shopping event to support local Veterans to be held Sept. 5 The community is invited to shop, eat and support local veterans during the Stars, Stripes & Shopping Event set for Saturday, September 5, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Kings Mountain American Legion Post 155, 613 E. Gold Street.

Admission is free, and the rain-or-shine event will bring together local vendors, food, and family-friendly shopping while raising funds for an organization that has served the Kings Mountain-area veterans and the community for generations.

Visitors can expect a variety of vendors offering handmade candles, woodworking, custom creations, arts and crafts, specialty foods and treats, boutique items and more.

Food vendors will also be on hand throughout the day.

Organizers emphasize that the event is about more than finding something special to take home.

Kings Mountain American Legion Post 155 is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organi-

zation, and community support helps the Post continue its work on behalf of local veterans. Purchases from participating vendors and support of the event help with the Legion's insurance costs and operating expenses, allowing the organization to maintain its facility and continue serving veterans and the greater Kings Mountain community.

For many years, American Legion Post 155 has provided a place where veterans can find fellowship, assistance and a connection with others who understand the experiences of military service.

The Post also plays an active role in the community by supporting patriotic observances, veterans' activities, and local programs.

Cleveland Co.’s Mark Folk is helping men navigate the wilderness of life

By Alan Hodge Life these days can be like deep woods or a trackless desert. That is, a real challenge to navigate and stay on a course that gets you to the other end in one piece, mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Realizing this about 25 years ago, Shelby businessman and outdoor enthusiast Mark Folk came up an idea to tackle that thorny quandary and founded the nonprofit New Wilderness Adventures, a service that takes guys out in the literal wilderness and teaches them how to survive in the figurative one of modern life through a closer walk with God. “Our modern wilderness includes challenges such as career pressures, questions about purpose, family struggles, and isolation,” Folk says. “No man should walk the wilderness alone.”

Folk, who feels that there is a strong connection between God, Nature, and Man, ‘our DNA loves wild places’, he says, explained how the idea for New Wilderness Adventures came into being.

“In 1998 I went on a two-week backpacking trip with North Carolina Outward Bound,” he said. “As a Christian man and the son of a pastor I had a spiritual epiphany.

The next year I led a trip to the Grand Canyon and God told me this was what I was made for. The idea for New Wilderness Adventures took off from there.”

Trips that New Wilderness Adventures embark on include hiking, fishing, hunting, scuba, kayaking, scuba, and more. In other words, just about anything exciting and outdoors.

Adventurer, author, and Shelby businessman Mark Folk has guided men through his New Wilderness Adventures ministry for 25 years.

“They come from any walk of life,” Folk says. “We have men ranging from business types to welders.”

The range of New Wilderness Adventures excursions spans the nation.

“We take trips from Florida to Alaska,” said Folk.

Since its launch a quarter century ago, New Wilderness Adventures has grown. These days, there are branches in Texas and Colorado. Grand Lakes. The leaders there include Barry Strickland in Dallas and Tim Little. They are aided by an able staff of trained guides.

A sinewy and youthful 65 years old, Folk plans to keep his hands, and feet, hitting trails and waters with participants for many years

to come.

“One thing I want to focus on is guide training,” he says.

In addition to being a pastoral pastor, Folk is also a man of letters and now he’s penned an inspirational tome based on journals, musing, memories, and life lessons called “Soul Weathered: Devotions Forged in the Fire of Real Life”. Folk says he wrote many of the entries when he was out in nature in peaceful settings.

The book is designed to provide 52 weeks of spirituality that men can use as they navigate the ups and downs of getting along in this world. Chapter titles include uplifting markers such as ‘The Narrow Trail of Peace’, ‘God Growing Us Up’, ‘Childlike Faith’, and ‘Eternal Faith’.

St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in KM celebrating 150 years

By Alan Hodge One of Kings Mountain’s oldest houses of worship, St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, is celebrating its 150th anniversary- and looking forward to the next century and a half.

The church was chartered and named in 1876 and the cornerstone of the building at Piedmont and Ridge laid on Sept. 7, 1878. The congregation was organized by a group of young Lutherans who came to the White Plains area (now Kings Mountain) from the Dutch Fork community and from St. Mark’s Church in Gaston County. The ten founding members were Philip Baker, Marcus Carpenter, Anderson Carpenter, J. S. and Juletta Mauney, W. A. and Susan Mauney, L.A. and Catherine McAlister, and Margaret Carpenter Mauney. The first pastor was Reverend J. R. Peterson.

As you might imagine, over the past 15 decades the church building has undergone numerous additions and renovations, but the current sanctuary deserves special mention both for its beautiful appearance and unique architectural features.

It was under the direction of architect Jens Frederick Larson that the new church building took shape in modified Gothic design with Swedish influence. The construction is of Old Virginia brick, adorned with Indiana limestone inside and out. The front entrance features two massive wooden doors with hand-wrought iron hinges. Above the doors are symbols of the four Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) carved in stone.

Above them is an exquisite Italian mosaic depicting nine seasons of the church year.

The altar, eagle lectern, and pulpit were hand carved in England. The wood from which the eagle is carved is from the Black Forest of Germany. The altar contains numerous symbols, such as dolphins, phoenix birds, squirrels, grapes, and doves. The triptych reredos is a richly colored figure of the Good Shepherd. The chancel furnishings crossed the Atlantic five times; due to a longshoreman’s strike in New York, the cargo could not be unloaded and twice was returned to England. The entire structure outside and within contains harmonious symbolism of the Vine, the Trinity, and Luther’s coat of arms. The stone font is encircled with cherubim, its silver cover topped by a descending dove. The finials on the choir pews carry out the same design as those on the tower and the elaborate light fixtures of the nave.

Inside, the nave majestic pillars and arches form a small chapel for each of ten pairs of stained-glass windows.

The windows are made from hand-blown German glass to admit a maximum of sunlight which is reflected on the limestone walls. There are ten Old Testament saints on the north wall, six New Testament and four post-biblical saints on

ing into heaven 40 days after Easter. In the main narthex is found a wood carving of Saint Matthew for whom the church was named.

The sanctuary also has a grand pipe organ installed by M. P. Moller, Hagerstown, Md. These days, it pours out beautiful music under the fingers and feet of talented 14-year-old Patrick Soffera.

But a church is more than a building. Just one example of this premise is the fact that St. Matthew’s has always been an advocate for the youth of Kings Mountain The church had the honor of being the sponsor of one of the first Boy Scout Troops to be organized in the US. This was before the Boy Scouts of America was chartered by Congress and their charter was from Sir Robert Baden-Powell of the English Boy Scout Association. The first Scoutmaster was Aubrey Mauney. In the later years (1950’s+) Otis Falls became the scoutmaster and during this time frame the troop had as many as 100 members.

Also, in 1973, St. Matthew’s Pre-School opened its doors to students under the visionary leadership of The Rev. Robert E. Allen. The preschool has the distinction of being state-licensed and the longest continuously running program of its type in the area, having graduated well over 1,000 students.

These days, St. Matthew’s has a loyal congregation of folks, many of whom have been attending servicers there their whole lives, and is eager for new members to join in.

Margaret Mauney Boheler once lived across the street from the church and has grown up a faithful St. Matthew’s member.

“For 150 years, grace and history have been woven into the heart of our church—shaping who we are while calling us forward,” she says. “Rooted in the faith of generations before us, we continue to grow, serve, and respond to a changing world, trusting that by God’s grace, we can honor our history while becoming the change we hope to see in the world.”

Margaret’s friend and another long-time St. Matthew’s attendee, Katie Holmes, shared her thoughts on the church.

“St. Matthew’s is a place anyone can come,” she says.

“We are always looking for new members. It’s an inclusive congregation.”

James Herndon has also been going to St. Matthew’s his whole life.

“St. Matthew’s has a rich tradition in liturgy and music,” he said. “We are traditional, but not stagnant.”

The current interim pastor at St. Matthew’s is Jeff Self.

He described the atmosphere the church exudes.

“We are a small congregation with a big heart,” he said.

Self also talked about the past and the future of the church.

“St. Matthew’s has resilience,” he said. “It has had it’s ups and downs, but it is ready to embrace whatever comes next.”

St. Matthews plans to hold a special 150th anniversary

event on Sunday, October 18 following the 11am worship service. Plans include a huge lunch and plenty of old-time, homecoming-style, socializing.

“We want to invite the community to join us for this special day,” Boheler said.

Scenes from NC Beach Blast Festival Children played in a field of bubbles, rode carnival rides, met pirates and mermaids all while adults had a chance to dance to beach music Saturday during the Kings Mountain’s 27th annual N.C. Beach Blast Festival last weekend. The downtown event brings the beach to the mountains, said organizers Susan Mosk, communications and marketing director, and Angela Padgett,

coordinator of the city’s Department of Marketing, Tourism and Events. Almost every part of the event is free including rides, inflatables and a watermelon eating contest.

Organizers note that 11,000 attended last year and this year is on target for the same number. The Beach Blast has earned the Carolina Beach Music Award and multiple times the people’s choice for Cleveland County.

Mountaineers drop opener to Shelby, Burns here Friday for first home game Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers fell to arch-rival Shelby 28-21 in their season opener Friday in Shelby but look forward to a big crowd and a good night Friday when the Burns Bulldogs come to Gamble Stadium.

The young Mountaineers got off to a slow start as the Lions built a 28-7 lead early in the second half, but they worked hard in the second half to make the end more exciting.

“They have a good team,” Mountaineer head coach Strait Herron said of the Lions, “but it was very disappointing. We

made too many mistakes at the wrong time.”

Shelby led by 7-0 after the first quarter and 21-7 at the half but the Mountaineers outscored them 14-7 in the second half to account for the final score.

“We’re still young and it’s just hard to keep focused and motivated when you get down that fast,” Coach Herron noted. ‘We’ve got to play the whole game and not look at the scoreboard.

KM women’s golf looking for good things in 2026

By Jimmy Black It’s time for the girls to take to the links. The Kings Mountain Women’s Golf Team enters the 2026 season with 3 golfers. Izabella Laughridge, a junior, along with Hayes Laney, a sophomore, are back for the upcoming campaign. They will be joined by freshman, Ella Kiser.

Coach Kevin Moss is excited about his young team.

He told the Herald, “This is a very young team. Izabella is our most experienced player. She played in middle school, and this will be her third year playing in high school. This is Hayes second year playing and Ella's first year playing. All three players will get plenty of playing experience this season. This

is a fun group to work with, and they do very well in the classroom.”

The team will have 7 regular season matches, along with the Regionals and State Championship.

Cross Country expecting big season!

By Jimmy Black Expectations are running high for the Boys’ Cross Country Team this year at Kings Mountain High School. Coach Luke Howell is excited about his team as they have been picked to win the 2026 Big South 5A/6A Cross Country Championship.

Coach Howell has assembled a team of 13 runners for the upcoming season. They are led by the returning conference champion, Luke Howell, along with David Johnson.

The Mountaineers won the conference championship in 2023 and 2024, and they

look to capture another championship this year.

There will be about 8 meets on the schedule for the team this year, including an invitational meet in Charlotte around the first of October with hundreds of runners that will compete.

Coach Howell is thrilled with his team and with the challenges that lie ahead.

On the girl’s side, Coach Howell’s goal is simply to field a team. They will be young, with 3 sophomores returning. The South Point Red Raiders are expected to win the girls conference championship this season.

Expect an exciting season for KM girls’ tennis!

By Jimmy Black Coach Rick Henderson is looking forward to the new season for his girls’ tennis team. According to Coach Henderson, “My expectations this year are very promising even after losing four seniors and three starters from last year’s team.”

The Kings Mountain team went undefeated last year in Big South 5A/6A Conference play. This was the seventh Conference Championship in the last eleven years. This year’s team has three returning starters (Seanna Simon, Co-MVP on last year’s team, Cindy Tipton and Grayson

Howell). They also have a couple of returning players in Shiloh Bridges and Markie Wampler.

The Mountaineers also have several new players (Alice Frye, Imani Boyd, Sloan Wampler, Iris Doupe and Lucy Santiago) that played KMMS tennis.

Coach Henderson also said, “Our practices have been sporadic over the last 2-3 weeks due to the heat index along with high temperatures and a few rainouts. I’m looking for Seanna Simon, Alice Frye, Cindy Tipton, Grayson Howell, Shiloh Bridges and Markie Wampler to help lead our team to another confer-

ence championship.”

Coach Rick Henderson is in his “19th” season with the KMHS Women’s Tennis Program. He thanks Hall of Fame Coach and Athletic Director Suzanne Grayson for hiring and believing in him back in 2008.

KM Volleyball Starts a new era with Coach Derek Bing

By Jimmy Black Derek “Drek” Bing has some mighty big shoes to fill as the new volleyball coach at Kings Mountain High School.

For the past 10 years, Heather Pasour has led the Lady Mountaineers to some incredible accomplishments. Over the last decade, Pasour accumulated 232 wins along with 8 conference championships and the 2023 NCHSAA 3A championship. In addition, she was named Big South Conference coach of the year on multiple occasions, as well as being named the 3A State coach of the year by the NCVBCA/AVCA. But Coach Bing is no slouch either! In his 10 seasons at Gaston Day School, Bing accumulated over 200 wins plus 3 state championships (2021, 2024, 2025). His teams also finished as runner-up in the state three different times, plus they made 1 semifinal and 1 quarterfinal appearance in the state playoffs. Gaston Day, under Bing’s guidance, also collected 5 conference championships, and he was named the Charlotte Observer coach of the year in 2021. Kings Mountain High School could not have selected a better coach to take over for Coach Pasour!

To say that Coach Bing is excited about his first team at

Kings Mountain would be an understatement even though he is inheriting a young team.

The Mountaineers lost 8 seniors from last year’s squad that lost to the Watauga Pioneers by a score of 3-2 in the state semi-finals. Among the players on this year’s team to keep an eye on are Campbell Benton and Ava Broome.

There will also be a lot of freshmen on the court for the Mountaineers. Coach Bing remarked, “We don’t have a ton of experience, but our girls are eager to go! Expect a lot of surprises from our team!”

Coach Bing is not worried about the overall record of his team. Instead, he wants his girls to be elite, and he wants them to have high expectations of themselves. He also likes what he sees from his squad so far, and he believes the girls are buying into his philosophy. He is also excited about the coaching staff he has put together.

Coach Bing has 2 former head coaches on his staff, and they are going to provide significant leadership for his program.

One of Coach Bing’s calling cards is that he wants his team to play a tough schedule. Just one look at Kings Mountain’s schedule this season and you will see that he is not afraid to take on anyone.

Coach Bing also said that he

But I want my team peaking in October, playing our best as the regular season winds down and the playoffs begin.”

With this year’s Mountaineer team, we are going to see great energy from the girls and a team that can compete on an elite level, plus a squad that can play with anyone.

No doubt, Kings Mountain volleyball is in good hands for many years to come with Derek Bing leading them!

KM volleyball drops both matches last week

By Jimmy Black The Kings Mountain Women’s Volleyball Team dropped to 0-3 on the young season after dropping 2 contests last week to Franklin High School and to St. Joseph’s Catholic School.

On Tuesday, August 18, the Mountaineers lost on the road by a score of 3-0 to the Franklin Panthers.

The scores in each set were 25-11, 25-17 and 25-11 in favor of Franklin. Several Franklin players stood out for their efforts. The team was led by Bristol Brooks

who had 36 assists in the matchup. Shelley Adams also contributed 11 assists.

Also, Audrey Pressley had 15 kills and 14 digs, while Ella Raby had 12 kills and 6 digs for the Panthers.

Franklin improved to 4-0 on the season with the win.

Then on Thursday, August 20, Kings Mountain dropped their third consecutive match to the St. Joseph’s Knights out of Greenville, SC, at home by a score of 3-0. The scores in each set were 25-15, 25-15 and 25-20 in favor of St. Joseph’s. The Knights were

led by Katy Gerron who had 11 kills to go along with 6 digs. Other contributors for St. Joseph’s include Emma Jacques with 8 digs, Olivia Patterson with 7 digs, and Brianna Armocida with 5 blocks. With the victory, St. Joseph’s now sits with a record of 2-0.

The Lady Mountaineers will have a chance to get into the win column this week as they travel to South Point on Thursday, and as they host Davidson Day on Tuesday.

A new beginning for KM Soccer in 2026

KM men’s soccer gets first win of season

In action from earlier in the week, on Monday, August 17, the Mountaineer Soccer Club went on the road to Shelby to face the Golden Lions. Shelby prevailed in that match by a score of 3-1.

The Golden Lions were led by Eli Morgan, Jeffrey Walsh and Tristan McCorkle who each scored one goal.

Will Cotton and Matthew Grenier also contributed one assist each. In the goalkeeping department, Luke Rumfelt stopped 5 KM shots while only surrendering one goal.

For Kings Mountain, Banks Myers scored the only goal of the match. With the win, Shelby improved to 3-0 on the season.

Then on Wednesday, August 19, the Kings Mountain squad lost a shootout on the road in Dallas to North Gaston by a score of 6-4. The game

Three different Kings Mountain players scored goals during the match. Juan Tinoco and Banks Myers each had one goal, and Diego Quirante had a goal and an assist. In addition, Mathias Betanou had two assists in the contest. Deacon Jackson was outstanding as the goaltender.

He stopped 4 of the 5 shot attempts that the Green Wave sent his way. With the win, Kings Mountain improved to 1-5 on the season, while Ashbrook dropped to 1-3.

was tied at 4 all at halftime, but the Wildcats scored two goals in the second period to take the win.

Diego Quirante had a monster match for the Mountaineers. The senior scored three goals on the game. Matthias Betanou scored the other Kings Mountain goal, and he also added an assist. Vidal Corrillo got in the scoring column by assisting on one of the goals. With the win, North Gaston improves to 2-1 on the young season.

Kings Mountain will be back in action on the road tonight at RS Central. The match will start at 6:00 pm.

Also, this coming Monday night, the Mountaineers will be at home for a non-conference game against East Henderson at 6:30 pm.
