Stars, Stripes & Shopping NC Beach Blast Festival event to support local this weekend in KM Veterans to be held Sept. 5 The community is invited to shop, eat and support local veterans during the Stars, Stripes & Shopping Event set for Saturday, September 5, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Kings Mountain American Legion Post 155, 613 E. Gold Street. Admission is free, and the rain-or-shine event will bring together local vendors, food, and family-friendly shopping while raising funds for an organization that has served the Kings Mountain-area veterans and the community for generations. Visitors can expect a variety of vendors offering handmade candles, woodworking, custom creations, arts and crafts, specialty foods and treats, boutique items and more. Food vendors will also be on hand throughout the day. Organizers emphasize that the event is about more than finding something special to take home. Kings Mountain American Legion Post 155 is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and community support helps the Post continue its

work on behalf of local veterans. Purchases from participating vendors and support of the event help with the Legion's insurance costs and operating expenses, allowing the organization to maintain its facility and continue serving veterans and the greater Kings Mountain community. For many years, American Legion Post 155 has provided a place where veterans can find fellowship, assistance and a connection with others who understand the experiences of military service. The Post also plays an active role in the community by supporting patriotic observances, veterans' activities, and local programs. Events such as Stars, Stripes & Shopping provide residents with a simple way

to help sustain that mission while also supporting small businesses, artisans and local entrepreneurs. The event's theme — "Shop Local • Eat Local • Support Local" — brings those efforts together in one place. Families are encouraged to attend, browse the vendor booths, enjoy something to eat and spend part of their Saturday supporting the people and organizations that make Kings Mountain home. Every purchase makes a difference. When the community supports Post 155, it helps ensure that the organization can continue to be there for the men and women who served their country and continue to serve. Stars, Stripes & Shopping will be held Saturday, September 5, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Kings Mountain American Legion Post 155, 613 E. Gold Street, Kings Mountain. Admission is free, and the event will be held rain or shine.

Liberty Mountain returns September 18 bringing the American Revolution to life Liberty Mountain returns to the Joy Theatre on Friday, September 18, 2026, with Revolutionary-era festivities beginning at 5:30 PM and the performance at 7:30 PM. Visitors will experience Revolutionary War reenactors, cannon and musket live fire demonstrations, crafts, horse mounted dragoons, a Drum and Fife Corps, music, food and beverages. Friday evening catering will be provided by Guilty Pleasures Catering & Bakery. THREE EXTRAORDINARY HISTORICAL EXHIBITS Thomas Kelly Pauley — “Wall of Commanders” Renowned portrait artist Thomas Kelly Pauley www.pauleyportraits.com returns with his acclaimed portraits of the key Patriot and Loyalist commanders at Kings Mountain. The “Wall of Commanders” has been a favorite of patrons for years and a special photo opportunity for descendants of those who fought in the battle. CHARLES TOPPAN — JEFFERSON’S ROUGH DRAFT New for 2026, the 1829 Charles Toppan steel engravings of Thomas Jefferson’s original rough draft

of the Declaration of Independence will be exhibited at the Joy. Brought by Founding Sponsors Gilbert and Jancy Patrick, the engravings preserve Jefferson’s handwritten draft, including interlineations by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams. THEODORE W. OHMAN — DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE Also on display is a 1942 Theodore W. Ohman lithographic restoration of the Declaration of Independence, donated by John B. and Sonja Houston. Ohman recreated the Declaration using an early photograph of the original parchment and the 1823 Stone engraving. Examples of his work are held by the National Archives, Library of Congress and Independence Hall. Together, these exhibits help tell the story of American freedom — from Jefferson’s words declaring independence to the Carolina patriots who fought to preserve it at Kings Mountain. Written by Robert “Bob” Inman, Liberty Mountain brings to life the dramatic events leading to the October 7, 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain, a pivotal victory in the Southern Campaign

of the American Revolution. The production features full theatrical action, music, epic battles and special effects. Since its debut in 2014, Liberty Mountain has been presented continuously, with nearly 5,000 guests attending last season. The story of the Battle of Kings Mountain is uniquely tied to Kings Mountain, Cleveland County and the Carolinas — yet remains largely unknown to many Americans. Liberty Mountain is dedicated to preserving and sharing this remarkable chapter of American history. Performances continue each weekend through October 11, 2026. For tickets and information, visit www.libertymountaindrama.com or www.kmlt.org, or call 704730-9408. Join the event to relive history and celebrate the patriots and the battle that helped shape a nation!

On Saturday, August 22, Patriots Park will host a full day of entertainment. The 2026 lineup features Swingin' Medallions, Castaways, Rivermist and headliner Jim Quick & Coastline, along with DJs Johnny B and Eric Bowman. Living Library event Thursday, Aug. 27 The GFWC Kings Mountain Woman’s Club invites the community to experience the Living Library, a unique opportunity to connect, listen, and learn through face-to-face conversations with local “human books.” The Living Library will be held Thursday, August 27, from 4:30–6:30 p.m. at the Kings Mountain High School Library. Unlike a traditional library, where visitors check out books to read their stories, the Living Library allows participants to sit down with a person and hear their story firsthand. In intimate, small-group conversations, guests will have the opportunity to meet four featured “books”: See LIBRARY, Page 5A

The Cleveland County Administration Building, located at 311 East Marion Street in Shelby, was briefly evacuated Monday afternoon after a vehicle caught fire in the front parking lot. Cleveland County Sheriff's Deputy Neil Holcomb, stationed at the building,

responded immediately and extinguished the fire before it could spread. Shelby Fire Department crews arrived on scene to confirm the area was safe and assess the vehicle. The cause remains under investigation. Cleveland County's Everbridge emergency notification system was ac-

tivated, sending real-time text, email, and app alerts to staff at the location. No injuries were reported, and no county property was damaged. Cleveland County thanks the responding personnel for their quick action in keeping staff and the public safe.

Congressman Tim Moore introduces resolution honoring Shelby as permanent home of American Legion World Series, recognizing 100 Years On August 13, Congressman Tim Moore (NC-14) introduced H.Res. 1482, the American Legion World Series Resolution, which recognizes 100 years of American Legion Baseball and the American Legion World Series and honors Shelby, North Carolina for serving as the permanent home of the American Legion World Series. “Since 2011, the American Legion World Series has been a welcomed tradition in Shelby and across Cleveland County,” said

Congressman Tim Moore. “As we celebrate 100 years of American Legion Baseball, this milestone reminds us of the lasting impact this event has both on and off the field. It teaches young athletes the value of hard work, sportsmanship, and patriotism. I’m grateful to the volunteers, coaches, and families who make this event such a source of pride for our community and continue to honor the legacy of our veterans.” The 2026 American Legion World Series, held August 13 through August 18, 2026 at Veterans Field

in Shelby, marks the 100th anniversary of the first American Legion World Series, a milestone reflecting a century of service to American communities and to the young athletes who have worn the American Legion uniform. Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital Road closure recognized among nation’s leaders in rare disease care for children and families Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital has been designated a NORD® Rare Disease Center of Excellence by the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD®), a national recognition that validates the organization’s leadership in delivering coordinated, multidisciplinary care for children with rare diseases. The designation places Levine Children’s Hospital among a national network of approximately 50 leading academic medical centers, research institutions and children’s hospitals dedicated to improving diagnosis, advancing research and expanding access to expert rare disease care. For the estimated 30 million Americans living with a rare disease — approximately half of whom are children — that expertise can be life-changing. Specifically for children across the Carolinas, this recognition demonstrates significant access to specialized care, research opportunities and support closer to home. “We’re committed to bringing more answers, high-quality care and hope for families facing a rare disease," said Dr. Debra Reiger, director of Atrium Health Rare Diseases. “No family should have to travel hundreds of miles to find

Designation from National Organization for Rare Disorders highlights the hospital’s excellence in advancing diagnosis, treatment, research and coordinated support for families across the region the care their child needs. Through this designation, we can continue to deepen our collaboration with leading rare disease experts nationwide and continue expanding what’s possible for the children and families we serve right here in the Carolinas.” Approximately 70% of rare diseases begin in childhood, and many affect multiple body systems while also impacting a child's development, learning and quality of life. With Atrium Health Rare Diseases, Levine Children’s Hospital helps families navigate that journey by bringing together

experts across genetics, developmental-behavioral pediatrics and numerous pediatric specialties to coordinate care around each child's unique needs. “Many children with rare diseases face medical challenges alongside developmental, behavioral or neurocognitive needs that require expertise from multiple specialists,” said Dr. Christine Erdie-Lalena, developmental behavioral pediatrician and associate director of Atrium Health Rare Diseases. “Our model brings those perspectives together so families aren't navigating a fragmented

system on their own. By integrating genetics, developmental-behavioral pediatrics and a broad network of pediatric specialists, we're able to care for the whole child and help families move forward with greater clarity, coordination and support." The NORD designation represents an important step forward in Levine Children’s Hospital’s efforts to expand access to nationally recognized rare disease expertise while continuing to drive innovation, discovery and coordinated care for patients and families.

High School Football starts this Friday By Jimmy Black This is the week everybody has been waiting for. It is the beginning of high school football action. Most all the schools in our area will see action for the first time this season. No game is any bigger than the Kings Mountain-Shelby game. Last year, the Mountaineers defeated the Golden Lions by a score of 30-14. Shelby will no doubt have revenge on their minds as Kings Mountain comes calling. Game time is 7:30 pm. In other county action, the Crest Chargers welcome the Burns Bulldogs in their annual battle. The Char-

gers have won three straight matchups against the Bulldogs, so you know that Burns is hungry to get back in the win column against Crest. Game time is also 7:30 pm. Other matchups in the area this Friday night include Palisades at Ashbrook; East Gaston at North Gaston; T.C. Roberson at Hunter Huss; Stuart Cramer at Forestview; South Point at Hickory; North Stokes at Cherryville; Pine Lake Prep at Bessemer City; and Highland Tech at Langtree Charter Academy. Be sure to get out and support our local athletes as they compete on the gridiron this season.

KM boys’ soccer team KM volleyball drops opener starts season on a against Weddington three-game losing steak By Jimmy Black

By Jimmy Black It’s been a tough beginning for the Kings Mountain boys’ soccer team in 2026. The team has dropped its first three contests of the year. Here is a recap of last week’s action. On Monday, August 10, the Mountaineers traveled to Lawndale to take on the Burns Bulldogs. Burns pulled out a tough win by the score of 2-1. Myles Wortman led the attack for the Bulldogs. On the Kings Mountain side, the Mountaineers were led by Banks Myers who scored the only goal

for Kings Mountain. Ever Guzman had four saves for the Mountaineers. Burns now has a record of 2-0. Then on Wednesday, August 12, Kings Mountain traveled to Lincolnton to take on a bunch of hungry Wolves. Lincolnton scored goals in each half to take a 2-0 victory over the Mountaineers. The Wolves were led by Joel Chavez and Kayden Adams who scored a goal each, and by Ariyon Allen who had one assist. Lincolnton now sits with a record of 2-1 on the young season. And then on Friday

night, August 14, Kings Mountain had their home opener against RS Central out of Rutherfordton. Again, the Mountaineers played tough, but they lost their third consecutive match by a score of 1-0. Reddick Young scored the only goal of the match for the Hilltoppers. He was assisted on the play by Blaze Kaamni. Collin Henson was outstanding in the goaltending department as he preserved the shutout. He had six saves on the evening. This was RS Central’s first match of the year.

Did you know? Parents of children who spend lots of time engaged with devices may wonder if there is a link between screen usage and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in young people. The National Institutes of Health reports that current research does not indicate tablet or screen use directly causes ADHD. However, excessive screen time is linked to a worsening of ADHD symptoms, and can

even cause temporary attention problems in children who do not have the disorder. While numbers vary by age, pediatric experts like the American Academy of Pediatrics emphasize that young children ages two to five limit screen time to one hour per day of high-quality, educational programming. The

The only time I can remember being without a dog was during my college years. They have been a part of my life ever since I was a child. I even raised and sold pups for a few years. But even though I have always had a dog, I don’t consider myself a dog lover. The reason is that I have met a few people who truly are. To them, their dog is a close family member and is treated as such. Two GARY MILLER of my dear friends are dog lovers. Not only have I witnessed their furry affection, but I have watched them grieve deeply over the loss of their four-legged friends. It was the same grief I have seen in so many people over the years. Tears, heartache, questions, and even anger were as real as if they had lost a blood relative. I grieved with them. They are dog lovers. But my home had never been like that until Snatch came along. Snatch came from the local animal shelter. My son picked him out for his own family but because of circumstances had to hand him over to us. He soon became my wife and grandson’s dog. They treated him like royalty and made sure he lived a life of canine luxury. In return, Snatch obeyed every instruction they uttered. Every single one. If a visiting dog came to our house, Snatch accepted it. When our children had babies, Snatch recognized them as part of the family. He has been nearly the perfect dog. In dog years, he is now in his 80s (or older). Recently he began losing weight and after a trip to the vet, we discovered a mass that is terminal. His last days are coming this week. My dog lovers are grieving. And this time, I am grieving too. I have so much I want to say about God and dogs. I want to remind you that there are souls that are not human. And dogs are among God’s creations that have a soul. I want to remind you that dogs reveal the grace of God in that they are always waiting for you to return, no matter what you have just done. I want to remind you that God gave dogs purpose. They serve and love. They give comfort and security. Dogs are evidence for the existence of God. Only God could create something so complete. And yet, my dog-loving friend John wondered why God didn’t allow man’s best friend to live a longer life. I mean an alligator can live up to 80 years. But who wants a pet alligator? Why are our life-giving, therapeutic, love-filled dogs with us for only a relatively short period of time? I pondered that question. And the only answer I know is that God knew there would be more dogs than there would be dog lovers. So, to give each pup an opportunity to love and be loved, He made their lives shorter so that humans could love several of them during their own lifetimes. Dog lovers are not simply pet owners. They are a special breed of humans who have been given a gift to love a special breed of animals. And while they will grieve more than most throughout their lives, perhaps they will love longer and deeper as well. Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org

Dr. Shope also oversaw the expansion and official dedication of the grade 4-12 campus, as well as the payoff of the $1.1-million loan that funded the construction of the school's K-3 campus. "Pinnacle’s board of directors is immensely proud of the exceptional leadership Dr. Shope has provided ," said Sen. Debbie Clary, the school's board chair and cofounder. "Our entire administrative team holds her in the highest regard, and we deeply appreciate her dedication as CEO. We look forward to continuing our strong, collaborative partnership in the years ahead."

CCC Foundation receives $34,000 gift to establish Angela Brooks to lead Pinnacle Classical Academy Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship Scholarship honors the legacy of paramedic Mary Elizabeth Jolly and supports future EMS professionals The Cleveland Community College Foundation has received a $34,000 donation from the Jolly Good Samaritan Scholarship LLC to establish the Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship, dedicated to supporting students enrolled in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs at Cleveland Community College. The gift includes a $30,000 endowed contribution to create the scholarship fund and an additional $4,000 in spendable funds, allowing scholarship awards to begin during the 2026-27 academic year. The scholarship honors the life and legacy of Mary Elizabeth Jolly, a CCCtrained paramedic whose commitment to serving others continues to inspire her family, friends, and colleagues. Jolly worked with Gaston County Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) from 2021 until her death in 2025. Known for her compassion, professionalism, and dedication to protecting others, she served on the department's swift water rescue team and received numerous recognitions throughout her career, including B-Shift Outstanding Paramedic in 2023 and B-Shift Excellence in Operational Readiness in 2025. In 2026, she was posthumously awarded the Gaston County Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, which will be named the Mary Jolly Distinguished Service Award going

forward. Jolly's final act reflected the selfless spirit by which she lived. After stopping to assist another driver involved in an accident on Interstate 95 in Florida, she suffered fatal injuries while rendering aid. The scholarship was created by Jolly’s family to honor her memory and ensure her commitment to serving others continues through future generations of emergency medical professionals. The Jolly family provided this message about why they are establishing this scholarship: “Mary’s story is not the tragedy of how her life ended; it is the example of how she chose to live. She was selfless, brave, caring, and loving, with the biggest heart—only God knew how it fit into her tiny body. “Mary loved being a paramedic. She was the person to show up on someone’s worst day and make it better. She was the calm in a chaotic situation. From helping someone with a cardiac arrest, assisting a woman in labor and delivering their baby into this world, or just simply spending a few extra minutes to settle a nervous elderly patient back home, Mary brought calm and comfort to those around her. She was the quietest person in a room with the loudest presence, a little ray of sunshine that touched so many. “We are establishing the Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship, in partnership with CCC, with the goal of giving future EMS students the opportunity to carry that same spirit of service forward. The world needs more people willing to show up for others simply because it is the right thing to

do. We need more Marys. If this scholarship helps even one student become that person for someone else, then a piece of Mary’s legacy continues with every life they touch. “Once a paramedic, always a paramedic, on or off duty. On her last call, while she was off duty and out of state, Mary did not hesitate to render assistance. She just did what she loved to do, help someone in need even in a dangerous situation. “God has her in his keeping; we will always have her in our hearts.” Through the Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship, her legacy will live on by providing financial assistance to students enrolled in EMS programs at CCC, with preference given to those pursuing Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) and Paramedic credentials. Applicants will be asked to share, through a written statement or video, what caring for others means to them, a reflection of the qualities Jolly demonstrated throughout her life and career. “There are few professions that require the level of courage and compassion demanded of EMS personnel,” said Jason Hurst, president of CCC. “Mary Jolly lived those values every day and ultimately gave her life while helping someone else. The Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship is a fitting tribute to her legacy, creating opportunities for future EMS professionals who share her commitment to serving others and our community.” Through the establishment of the scholarship, the Jolly family hopes to invest in the

next generation of emergency service personnel who will serve and protect communities throughout the region. CCC Foundation Executive Director, Grayson Pierce, noted, "The CCC Foundation is so grateful to the Jolly family for their vision and generosity in creating the Jolly Good Samaritan Endowed Scholarship. This scholarship not only honors Mary Jolly but invests in future EMS professionals who will continue the important work of caring for and protecting our communities.” The scholarship will be administered by the Cleveland Community College Foundation and awarded annually in accordance with the CCC Foundation policies and scholarship selection procedures. About the Cleveland Community College Foundation The Cleveland Community College Foundation exists to support the mission of Cleveland Community College by securing and managing resources that enhance educational opportunities, strengthen workforce development in the community, and remove financial barriers for students. By providing scholarships, supporting college programs and building partnerships in the community, the CCC Foundation helps students achieve their educational and career goals.

to manage distractions while studying for academic success. • Gatekeep digital distractions. Students can move their phones entirely out of arm’s reach or into another room while studying. When studying on tablets or laptops, students can use software to disable non-academic platforms so they’re not tempted

to check social media or browse the internet. • Avoid cognitive fatigue. Study blocks should be a maximum of two hours per course before switching subjects to keep the mind fresh. Trying to maintain intense concentration for hours on end often ends with attention waning and the brain seeking other stimuli.

How to Make Sure Your End-of-Life Wishes Are Followed

Dear Savvy Senior, I had a living will/ advance directive prepared about 10 years ago documenting my end-of-life medical wishes, but I’ve read that these documents are often ignored. What can you tell me about this? --Troubled Tina

Dear Tina, Yes, unfortunately, that can happen. Living wills aren’t always followed in practice, most often because the document isn’t available when it’s needed or never reaches the right people in time. They can also fall short because they aren’t medical orders, and the language may be too vague to guide doc-

tors in an emergency. That doesn’t mean your wishes won’t be honored, but it does mean a little extra planning can help prevent confusion later.

Here’s how to make sure your wishes are followed. Advance directive + POLST About 40 percent of older Americans have an advance directive. This typically includes a living will that spells out the care you want if you become incapacitated, and a health care power of attorney (or proxy) who is authorized to make decisions on your behalf. To

instructions, talk with your doctor about completing a POLST (Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) – sometimes called MOLST or POST depending on your state. Unlike a living will, this is a doctor-signed medical order that must be followed by EMTs and hospital staff. It translates your wishes into clear instructions for treatments such as CPR, breathing machines, and feeding tubes.

health care proxy, family members, and physicians so everyone is aligned.

Even if you already have an advance directive, adding a POLST can make your wishes clearer. Without one, first responders are generally required to attempt resuscitation and transport you to a hospital, where doctors may pursue aggressive treatment if your living will isn’t available or specific enough.

It’s also wise to ask your providers to add the form to your electronic health record, since medical information isn’t always shared between hospitals and care facilities. These steps can make a real difference in helping ensure your wishes are followed.

These interventions can save lives but may also cause harm if you are very ill or frail. Discussing them ahead of time helps you weigh the trade-offs and makes it easier for your fam-

Once your POLST is completed, make sure it is easy to find. Keep a copy on the refrigerator, carry one in your wallet, and save a photo on your phone. Share copies with your

If discussing these issues with family feels difficult, websites like The Conversation Project (theconversationproject.org) and Prepare for Your Care (prepareforyourcare.org) offer helpful guidance.

One final note: if you’re planning surgery, you may want to temporarily suspend your POLST in case your heart stops briefly during the procedure. And if you haven’t yet created an advance directive, you can do so for free at caringinfo. org or mydirectives. com, or for a small fee – $5 to $7.50 – at fivewishes.org. Taking these steps now can help ensure your wishes are followed and ease the burden on your loved ones later. Send your questions or comments to questions@savvysenior.org, or to Savvy Senior, P.O.
