able for adult guests. Admission is free, although attendees are encouraged to support the participating food and craft vendors. Tents are permitted at Beach Blast but must be registered in advance with the city's Marketing, Tourism and Events Department. Um-
brellas are welcome except in the park's tiered seating area. Air-conditioned restrooms are located near the Patriots Park War Memorial, with portable restrooms also available along Railroad Avenue. ■ OBITUARIES
Esther Muench Plonk
Esther Joan Moulthrop Muench Plonk died July 31, 2026, at The Neighborhoods, a nursing home in Columbia, Mo., after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. She was born July 2, 1940, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Roscoe Emmett Moulthrop Jr. and Esther Burton Moulthrop. Shortly afterward, her family moved to Bethany, Mo., where she grew up and graduated in 1958 from Southwest Harrison High School. Her father was a prominent attorney, and “Esther Jo,” as she was known, often helped with office work and research at the courthouse. In 1962, she earned a bachelor’s degree in history and office management from Lindenwood College. She met her future husband, Lau-
Reverend Early Wayne Worcester KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC – Reverend Earl Wayne Worcester, 90, of Kings Mountain, NC, stepped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on August 6, 2026. Born January 29, 1936, in Bangor, Maine, Wayne lived a life overflowing with faith, family, humor, and service — a life that lit up every room, every ballfield, and every heart he touched. Wayne proudly served eight years in the United States Army, where he became a skilled boxer. After returning home, fate found him at a local street dance — where he met the love of his life and swept her off her feet, beginning a 61 year love story marked by devotion, laughter, and unwavering partnership. Together they raised three children and built a family rooted in tradition, faith, and deep love. A prayer warrior and
rence Walter Muench, a medical student at Washington University, while he visited Lindenwood with a friend. She slipped in her high heels and fell down the front steps of Sibley Hall into his arms --a catch made in heaven. Married in June 1962, they soon headed to Okinawa, where Larry served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Esther took classes in Japanese language, history and customs and would later give presentations about Okinawa to civic groups. Returning from overseas In 1966, they moved to St. Louis. While Larry completed a medical residency at Washington University, she began a pre-school in the basement of her apartment building that served about 20 children including her son. Larry’s career as an anesthesiologist then led the family to live in several cities: Denver; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Sioux City, Iowa; Kansas City (Leawood, Kan.); and Kings Mountain, N.C. Esther had three children, all of whom survive her: James (Fran) Muench, of Columbia, Mo., born in Okinawa; Jennifer (Neill) Laney, of Franklinton, N.C., born in St. Louis; and Jeffrey (Venetia) Muench, of Greensboro, N.C., born in Colorado Springs; in addition to her “adopted” daughter Ǻsa Nord
(Tomas), an exchange student, of Lynköping, Sweden. Esther is also survived by her twin sisters Jean (Bruce) Wolff, of St. Louis, and Jeannette (Bob) Babyok, of Charlottesville, Va. Her brother, Roscoe E. Moulthrop III, died in 2013. Survivors also include six grandchildren: Nolan Muench, April Muench, Joann Laney (Coda) Hensley, Kristen Laney, Devin Muench and Zack Muench. Esther loved being a grandmother, making a point to bring an interesting craft or recipe to enjoy with grandchildren when she visited. There are also five step-children: Carole Fenimore Haas Gravagno, Peggy Pollack (Ken), George Webb Plonk Jr. (Judy), Barbara Bridges (Bill) and Becky Loftin (Bill), along with a multitude of step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Three years after Larry Muench died in May 2001 at age 64, she married George Webb Plonk Sr., a surgeon and former colleague of Larry. Esther loved to ride horses, and in George, she found a fellow horseman. Esther lived in Kings Mountain until 2022, when George died at age 103. She then moved to Columbia, Mo., to be nearer to family. People saw Esther as a natural leader and organizer,
servant hearted leader, Wayne pastored Lighthouse Ministries in Kings Mountain for five years and continued serving in ministry until the very day The Lord called him home. Wayne was also a beloved figure in the Kings Mountain community. For more than 30 years he played, coached and umpired at Kings Mountain Parks & Recreation. Wayne was a passionate Pittsburg Steeler Fan and loved having a fishing rod in his hand! At home, Wayne was known for his legendary outdoor Christmas lights, a tradition that made him locally famous and brought joy to neighbors year after year. Above all, Wayne loved Jesus, family, and tradition. He cherished his role and left a beautiful legacy. Wayne is survived by Troy Worcester (Renee), Tammy Postell (Tim) Rodney Ruff, 16 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Wayne is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Ann Worcester, his daughter Regina Ruff, his parents Carroll and Bessie Worcester and numerous brothers and sisters. He leaves behind a family who will forever carry his light, his laughter, and his faith. Wayne lived boldly, loved deeply, and served joyfully. His legacy shines in every life he touched — in every prayer he prayed, every child he coached, every Christmas light he hung, and every soul he pointed toward Jesus. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, August 13, 2026, and from 11:00 to 11:45 am on Friday, August 14, 2026, at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home. Earl’s funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm with Reverend Tim Postell officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery. She encouraged her children to learn music, taking them to violin, piano and trombone lessons. After managing medical offices, her crowning professional achievement came when she was named the first Executive Director of the Kings Mountain Historical Museum Foundation in October 2001. Originally housed in the attic at City Hall, the museum had only been open for a year in its current home,
the town’s former Post Office. Having grown up a Methodist, she joined the Episcopal church with Larry and eventually served on the vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church in Kings Mountain. TODAY’S QUOTE:
Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. – Winston Churchill
Pieces of Kings Mountain History For 27 years, Kings Mountain has found a way to bring the beach LORETTA to the footCOZART hills. What began as a celebration of Carolina beach music has grown into one of the City’s most anticipated summer traditions, bringing families, friends, music lovers, food vendors and visitors together for a weekend of fun. BeachBlast has changed considerably over the years, but the heart of the event has remained the same — great music, good food, family fun and the opportunity to make memories together. Much of the credit for creating that spirit belongs to the people who have worked behind the scenes to make BeachBlast and Kings Mountain’s special events successful. One of those people was Ellis Noell, who served the City for many years as its Public Relations and Special Events Director and later as Director of the Kings Mountain Tourism Development Authority. Ellis had a gift for promotion and for making people excited about Kings Mountain. With his background in film and video production and his larger-than-life personality, he understood that a successful event was
ELLIS NOELL about more than putting a band on a stage. It was about creating an experience people would remember. Over the years, BeachBlast continued to grow, adding food and craft vendors, children’s activities, water attractions, contests and entertainment while keeping beach music at its center. By 2018, the festival was attracting major Carolina beach bands and had been nominated for the Carolina Beach Music Association’s Event of the Year. In 2019, BeachBlast won that honor, competing against festivals from much larger beach destinations. Then came 2020, when the pandemic forced the City to take BeachBlast online. More than 8,000 people participated in the virtual celebration, proving that even a pandemic couldn’t stop the music — or the community’s love for BeachBlast. When the festival re-
turned to Patriots Park, it came back bigger and better. Pirate Port, mermaids, inflatables, the Beach Ball Drop, the Golf Cart Parade, food vendors and children’s activities joined the beach music to create the festival we know today. Over the years, Christy Conner and, subsequently, Susan Mosk continued the work of building the City’s special events program and finding new ways to make BeachBlast an experience for the entire family. Their work helped carry forward the tradition Ellis helped establish. Today, Angela Padgett is one of the people working year-round to keep that tradition growing. Although BeachBlast takes place over one weekend, making it happen is a year-round job. Angela works throughout the year to bring beach music, unique experiences, food vendors and fun activities to Kings Mountain, helping make each year’s festival something visitors look forward to. That behind-thescenes work is easy to overlook when we arrive at Patriots Park and everything is ready. The music is playing, the food smells wonderful, children are laughing, friends are visiting and the beach has once again arrived in Kings Mountain. So as another Beach-
Looking Back
Blast approaches, it is worth remembering Ellis Noell and the many people who helped build this even over the years, including Christy Conner, Susan Mosk, Angela Padgett and the many City employees, volunteers, sponsors, vendors and performers who have contributed over the years. After 27 years, BeachBlast has become much more than a festival. It is a Kings Mountain tradi-
tion. Children who once came with their parents are now bringing their own children. Friends make plans to meet at Patriots Park every year. And generations of families have memories connected to the music, the activities and the people they met there. Now known as the NC BeachBlast Festival, this event has given Kings Mountain 27 years of music, laughter, dancing, food, family fun and
memories. And perhaps that is the best measure of its success. For one weekend every summer, the beach comes to Kings Mountain — and our community comes together to enjoy it. The NC BeachBlast Festival will be held on August 21 &22 in Patriots Park this year. So, gather the family and join your neighbors for one last trip to the beach this summer!

God often brought down full-grown uses hardship to deepen our confidence in Him. trees. Horatio Spafford knew The apostle Paul understood suffering and unimaginable grief after the storms of life well. He losing his daughters in a endured imprisonment, shipwreck. Yet from that beatings, shipwrecks, and heartbreak came one of countless disappointments. Christianity’s most power-
ful hymns, “It Is Well with My Soul.” He did not write those words because life was easy. He wrote them because Christ was faithful. Most of us have walked through hospital waiting rooms, funeral homes, broken relationships, or uncertain futures. Those moments can shake us to the core–but they do not have to destroy us. The song Firm Foundation (He Won’t) reminds us: “I’ve still got joy in chaos…I’ve got peace that makes no sense.” That kind of confidence doesn’t come from positive thinking. It comes from knowing the One who re-
mains faithful when everything else feels uncertain. God never promised a storm-free life. Jesus himself reminded us, “In this world you will have trouble.” But He immediately added, “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). If today finds you in deep waters, don’t measure God’s faithfulness by your circumstances. Measure it by the cross and the empty tomb. Our circumstances change. Christ never does. Blessings, Jonathan

Cleveland County Football Jamboree By Jimmy Black The Cleveland County Football Jamboree was held on Friday night, August 7 at Gardner Webb’s Ernest W. Spangler Stadium. All four county teams saw action in the two-quarter scrimmage. In the opener, the Crest Chargers defeated the Monroe Redhawks by a score of 10-7. K.J. Bell guided the Chargers on their lone touchdown drive of the night. Senior Brock Melton later engineered a crucial lategame drive that set up the game-winning field goal. In the second contest, the Burns Bulldogs de-
feated the South Mecklenburg Sabres 19-6. Burns gave up a touchdown on South Mecklenburg's opening drive before their defense locked in for the rest of the game. All-conference offensive linemen Gage Camp, Beau Harrill, and Jesse Bryant dominated upfront to pave the way for the Bulldog ground game. Max Davis and Romelo Wells each rushed for touchdowns for the Bulldogs. In the third contest, the Shelby Lions defeated the Corvian Community Cardinals out of Charlotte by a score of 13-7. Cruz Scott and Kendrick Raper both shared snaps at quar-
