Fatal ATV accident in Kings Mountain

Swoogers closing After over a quarter century in business, Swooger’s restaurant located at 1016 Shelby Rd. in Kings Mountain announced it will be closing its doors.

The popular eatery and gathering spot was started

by Tom Best and Karen Moss back in 1999. Since

then, it has built a huge following of loyal customers who come in for its delicious food, and tasty Tony’s Ice Cream treats.

The menu at Swooger’s has always been crafted with care, made to order, and full of homestyle flavor. A perennial favorite has been the

Mountie burger. Other items that folks flocked to enjoy was the Philly cheese steak and chocolate peanut butter milkshake.

On July 25, 2026, at approximately 6:33 p.m., Kings Mountain Police Department, along with Kings Mountain Fire Department and Gaston County EMS, responded to a 911 call reporting a collision involving an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) and a passenger truck, at 799 Sara Lee Access Road, an industrial building currently under construction.

Upon arriving, first responding officers attempted to provide emer-

gency medical aid. Due to the injuries sustained in the collision, the operator of the ATV was pronounced deceased at the scene.

With the assistance of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, preliminary investigative processes and witness interviews indicate that the operator of the ATV swerved to avoid a gravel patch in the private vehicular area (PVA) and collided with a passenger truck.

Both vehicles were part

of a larger group of ATVs and trucks that had gathered to go "four-wheeling" in the area.

The victim of this accident has been identified as Damieon Keith Brinson (20 years old) of Gastonia, NC. Next of kin have been notified. The accident investigation is ongoing and anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to contact the Kings Mountain Police Department at (704) 734-0444.

Reserved seating tickets for the remaining 14 public performances are $20 and Premier seating tickets are $25. Public performances begin with the 3:00 PM matinee on Saturday, September 19th. Additional dates and times are September 20, 25, 26 and October 2, 3, 9 and 10 at 7:30 PM. 3:00 PM matinees will be on September 19, 20, 26, 27 and October 3, 4 and 11.

American Legion World Series partners with Food Lion Feeds for Academic Achievement Day Food Drive The American Legion World Series (ALWS) is proud to partner with Food Lion Feeds on Friday, August 14, to support college students facing food insecurity through a special Academic Achievement Day Food Drive.

Fans attending GWU’s Academic Achievement Day games are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable dry goods to Keeter Stadium. All collected items will benefit the Food Lion Feeds Campus Pantry at Gardner-Webb University, helping provide food to students in need throughout the academic year.

Food Lion Feeds works to combat hunger through a variety of community partnerships, including campus hunger-relief initiatives and athletic partnerships that collect and distribute food to students experi-

encing food insecurity.

Cleveland County announces Patrick Senior Center Enhanced Communications Initiative August events for the Justice Center Project As the largest and one of the most significant capital investments in County history, the Cleveland County Justice Center represents a major commitment of public resources. As such, since 2019, the Justice Center has been a topic of discussion on the Board of Commissioners’ meeting and work session agenda(s) twenty-six (26) times; since 2021, the Justice Center has appeared twenty-three (23) times as a news article/story through our media partners; since 2024, County staff have participated in approximately one-hundred ten (110) owner, architect and contractor meetings along with approximately fifty (50) building/site inspections/tours and over a dozen stakeholders’ meetings; the County leveraged financial consulting assistance for the project; County representatives have engaged the North Carolina Office of State Treasurer – Local Government Commission on multiple occasions; the County has commissioned two (2) audits performed by an independent construction contract auditing firm along with countless other oversight activities.

As part of this commitment, the County has exercised its contractual rights to request additional documentation related to project costs and schedules, seek reimbursement when appropriate and require updated project timelines before releasing additional contract contingency funds. These steps demonstrate the County’s responsibility to provide prudent fiscal oversight and financial stewardship in protection of the public’s resources.

“Our responsibility is to ask questions, insist on accountability from all parties involved and keep our citizens informed throughout the process. The County remains steadfast in our commitment to the public,” stated county manager David B. Cotton.

Pieces of Kings Mountain History For many Kings Mountain residents, Gene and Phyllis Austin were the LORETTA familiar faces COZART behind the counter at Fashion Laundry & Cleaners. For others, Gene was the voice they heard on WKMT Radio, the volunteer they met through Babe Ruth Baseball, or the fellow church member at Kings Mountain Baptist Church. Together, they built a family business while remaining active in nearly every corner of community life.

Although Fashion Laundry & Cleaners became the business most closely associated with the Austins, their involvement in the garment-care industry began earlier. The 1961– 1962 Kings Mountain City Directory lists Gene F. Austin and his wife, Phyllis W. Austin, as operators of the Piedmont Washerette, placing them among the early entrepreneurs who introduced self-service laundry facilities to Kings Mountain. At a time when many households still lacked automatic washers and dryers, neighborhood washerettes provided families with an affordable and convenient alternative for weekly laundry.

As home laundry technology evolved, so did the Austins’ business. They became the owners and operators of Fashion Laundry & Cleaners in the early 1960s, where they spent decades serving customers from Kings Mountain and the surrounding area.

Running a neighborhood dry cleaner required far more than simply clean-

ing clothing. Every garment had to be inspected, stains identified and treated, buttons checked, fabrics evaluated, and each piece carefully pressed before it was returned to its owner.

Customers entrusted the Austins with everything from business suits and church attire to wedding dresses, uniforms, comforters, and family heirlooms.

The business succeeded during an era when professional garment care remained an important part of everyday life. Before permanent-press fabrics and casual office attire became widespread, most families relied on neighborhood cleaners to maintain dress clothing and specialty garments. Fashion Laundry & Cleaners became one of the businesses that quietly helped Kings Mountain residents prepare for work, church, school functions, weddings, graduations, and countless other occasions.

While the cleaners occupied much of Gene and Phyllis’ working lives, neither limited their contributions to the business.

Gene Austin was one of Kings Mountain’s bestknown community figures.

Many residents recognized his voice from WKMT Radio, where he worked as an announcer during the years when local radio stations served as the primary source for community news, weather, sports, and local events. His broadcasting career gave him a connection to thousands of listeners across Cleveland County.

He was equally committed to youth athletics.

Gene served as Assistant State Director for the Babe Ruth Baseball Association,

helping organize leagues and tournaments while encouraging young players throughout North Carolina.

Baseball became another avenue through which he invested in the next generation.

His community involvement also included Kings Mountain Little Theatre, where he supported local productions, and Kings Mountain Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and sang in the church choir. Those organizations reflected his willingness to contribute his time wherever it was needed.

Phyllis Austin shared that same spirit of service.

Born Phyllis Ware, she was the daughter of C. D. “Red” Ware and Estelle Hord Ware, longtime Kings Mountain residents. She and Gene were married for sixty years while raising their family and operating their business together.

Friends remembered Phyllis for her professionalism, kindness, and genuine interest in people. In addition to helping operate Fashion Laundry & Cleaners, she held several management positions during her career. Her obituary in The Kings Mountain Herald observed that she had “taken care of many people over the years,” a statement that reflected both her work and her reputation within the community.

Together, Gene and Phyllis represented a generation of small-business owners whose professional and personal lives were closely connected. Their customers often knew them through church, civic organizations, youth sports, or local events long See LAUNDRY, Page 5A

I suppose the owners love the kiosks? Are they really making them more money or saving them employee expenses?

Are they really working?

Have they made their business easier? The fact that I don’t care for them is not likely impacting anything. How4ever, the Hardees and the Burger King around the corner from where I live still takes my order at the counter. That’s where I find myself navigating when in need of that kind of food. Time will tell if my choices will make any difference.

Real To Reel International Film Festival held at Joy Theatre This year’s Real to Reel International Film Festival took place over the weekend at the Joy Performance Center.

The festival received 163 films from every continent except Antarctica.

Some of those countries are Egypt, Poland, Mexico, Norway, Ukraine and Iran. Due to the distance not all of the filmmakers were able to be there. Margaret Magnus was one who was. She was the producer, co-director and writer of “Tree of Fire: A Story of Love and Resilience.” Her film was one of 14 to be

shown. The film centers around the healing of an oak tree in Oija, California after a major fire.

The festival was founded 27 years ago by two Cleveland County residents – Will Eskridge and Noel Manning. Shearra Miller, former president of CCAC, was instrumental as well. Stephanie Paysour,

President of Cleveland County Arts Council, and Brandon Bent are co-directors of this year’s festival.

They want to hear from the community what films they are interested in.

She explained the differences in a documentary and a movie – documentaries are based on real events, are typically shorter, are shot closer to the subjects and are made on a smaller scale.

“It’s impossible to pull off without volunteers, the board and staff,” Pasour said.

The Herald regularly carried advertisements for Fashion Laundry & Cleaners, yet, like many family-owned businesses, much of the Austins’ contribution was recorded indirectly.

Their story appears in business listings, community announcements, church news, sports coverage, and later in the tributes published after their passing. Taken together, those pieces reveal two people who consistently invested in their hometown.

Fashion Laundry & Cleaners also reflects a broader chapter in Kings Mountain’s commercial history. During the second half of the twentieth century, locally owned cleaners were fixtures in

nearly every downtown.

As clothing styles changed, home laundry equipment improved, and regional cleaning chains expanded, many independent businesses disappeared.

The Austins successfully navigated those changes for many years, adapting their business while maintaining the personal service that neighborhood cleaners were known for.

Gene Austin died in 2018, a little more than three years after Phyllis.

By then, their names had become associated with far more than a dry-cleaning business. Through broadcasting, youth baseball, church leadership, community theater, and decades of customer service, they had become part of the everyday history of Kings Mountain.

Their story is also a reminder of the import-

ant role family-owned businesses have played in shaping the community.

While larger companies often leave financial records, businesses like Fashion Laundry & Cleaners leave something equally valuable—a record of the people who built relationships, earned trust, and served their neighbors for decades.

Today, the names Gene and Phyllis Austin remain connected to a business that quietly met the everyday needs of thousands of Kings Mountain families. Their legacy is found not only in the success of Fashion Laundry & Cleaners, but also in the many organizations and individuals whose lives they touched through a lifetime of community involvement.

Gardner-Webb invites community to Webbstock 2026 on August 22; featuring live music and family fun An evening of live music, local food, family fun and community connection is headed to Gardner-Webb University on Saturday, August 22. Residents from across Cleveland County and surrounding areas are invited to Webbstock 2026 from 4-9 p.m. at Brinkley Amphitheater. Admission is free.

Reimagined with a new format, Webbstock serves as a kickoff to the fall semester while bringing together students, families, alumni and community members for an evening of entertainment, vendors and family-friendly festivities.

100 partners across North and South Carolina to help solve one of America’s most important infrastructure challenges while strengthening the regional economy, creating jobs, and accelerating technologies that improve U.S. competitiveness.

The Carolinas Grid Engine will receive an initial $15 million over two years, with the potential for up to $160 million over 10 years.

The initiative will support the development of new technologies, strengthen domestic manufacturing and supply chains, and expand workforce development opportunities across a 36-county region in North and South Carolina.

Earlier this year, when the Carolinas Grid Engine was selected as a finalist for the Regional Innovation Engines program, Hurst participated in the NSF site visit at UNC Charlotte. The site visit represented the final stage of the NSF review process and highlighted the strength of the Engine's cross-sector partnerships.

The Carolinas Grid Engine seeks to advance new technologies for transmission, distribution, and generation while creating a thriving domestic manufacturing ecosystem and reducing the time required to move innovative grid technologies from research to deployment. Through part-

nerships among universities, community colleges, K-12 school systems, industry leaders, utilities, government agencies, and economic development organizations, the initiative will position the Carolinas as a national hub for energy innovation and workforce development.

KM Women’s tennis tryouts Tryouts for the Kings Mountain Women’s Tennis Team will take place on Wednesday, August 12, Thursday, August 13, and Monday, August 17 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at the KMHS Tennis Com-

All student athletes are required to have their tennis gear, water bottle, etc. with them. They are also required to have an up-todate physical before they can participate in tryouts

and in all practice sessions.

KM Family YMCA fall youth coed soccer 2026 It’s not too late to sign up for Fall Youth Coed Soccer at the Kings Mountain YMCA. Late registration will be held from August 24 until August 28. The cost is $40.00 for members and $70.00 for non-members. If you register late, the cost will be $50.00 for members and $80.00 for non-members.

Practices will start the week of August 31. They will be held on Weekday evenings (excluding Wednesdays) and there may be some Saturday morning/afternoon practices. The times for practice will be at 6:00, 7:00, or 8:00 PM. Saturday practices will be available for coaches by request and could start as early as 9:00 AM and as late as 3:00

PM! Games will begin on September 26 and will end by November 14. The games will be held on Saturday mornings/afternoons and, if necessary, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Also, the games will be played at the Kings Mountain YMCA Fields and potentially the Dover YMCA. Teams will play an eight-game season.

There will be no playoffs or bowl games for any age group.

Gardner Webb men's basketball set to take on tough non-conference schedule

By Matthew Farris, GWU Assistant AD of Strategic Communication Head coach Jeremy Luther and the Gardner-Webb men's basketball team have announced the non-conference portion of its 202627 schedule, including six games against Power-4 schools.

"I am really excited about our group," said Luther. "We have put together one of the most difficult non-conference schedules in the country and the most

difficult schedule Gardner-Webb has had in my 14 years."

The Runnin' Bulldogs kick off the season with a trip to national power UCONN on November 2 before heading to Austin, Texas, to face the Longhorns of Texas on November 5. Both teams were participants in the NCAA Tournament last season while the Huskies advanced to the National Title Game, ultimately falling to Michigan, 69-63.

As a young adult, I remember fishing the riverbank at Mr. MacDonald’s farm. (Yes, Old McDonald had a farm. Lol) He was an older man whose property ran along the river. I don’t remember how we first discovered this place, but it seemed to not upset him when we set up camp at his place. Many of those days he would come by and check on us and tell us a few stories about days gone GARY MILLER by. One of his tobacco barns stood only a few yards from where we fished, and it seemed no matter what time of year it was, he always had a few tobacco plants hanging inside. On occasion he would give us some leaves to take home and twist for a good homemade chew. His recipe was either to cut up a fresh apple and let it marinate the leaves for a few days, or to ease that twist of tobacco down into a jar of honey or molasses. This was my favorite. Alongside that same bank was his boat. It was one like I had never seen before, or since. I can only describe it as a flat bottom canoe, made of wood. It was long and not very wide or deep. And I can only remember a couple of places to sit down. Now I’m sure he had landed a few fish from this boat in times past, but now the boat was used for occasional transportation. When the weather was good and the river was calm, each Sunday, Mr. MacDonald would gather his long homemade oar, get in his homemade boat, and traverse the small river to the church he attended downstream. I’m sure he had other ways of getting there, but the boat was his preferred means. Now, as a younger fellow, I never asked him why he did that. I wished I had. As an older man, I can imagine the reasons. There’s no doubt the short journey prepared his mind for that morning’s gathering. The trip itself, for someone like you and me, and him, would be its own worship experience. I can imagine the sights he must have enjoyed as he prepared to meet with fellow believers. I can imagine how he must have been awestruck by the picture of God as painted by creation. I can imagine how the voices of each animal became God’s unique choir as they were sung in unison. The Biblical David must have taken that same trip, when he sung the words, “The heavens declare the glory of God!” It’s true. And even though that boat is perhaps rotted and ruined, the sights and sounds that declare the glory of God are still there for us, if we’ll put ourselves in the place to see and hear them.

4. Technological overhauls It’s becoming increasingly necessary for farms to utilize new technologies and embrace automation. Some farmers may not be trained in the utilization and application of these technologies, and conversion to new farming practices may require education/skills to manage new tools, or the hiring of skilled technicians from

a shrinking agricultural workforce.

5. Climate change Climate change and extreme weather can have a notable impact on farming. Weather events like droughts, floods and storms have become more common and severe. Farmers are vulnerable to unpredictable conditions and crop yields.

6. Animal illnesses One only has to look to the recent avian influenza outbreak to understand the disruption illnesses can have on livestock. The disease has led to mass culling of infested flocks, which has caused widespread losses in chickens, financial burdens to poultry farms and disruptions to egg production that has driven up costs. Bird flu is not isolated to poultry, either. Avian flu can affect dairy cattle, causing decreased milk production and cow death. The need for cleanup procedures and biosecurity measures from these illnesses puts an added financial burden on farmers.

Should You Get a Heart Calcium Scan?

Dear Savvy Senior, I just turned 58 and heart disease runs in my family. My cholesterol has been creeping up, and I’ve been hearing about a scan that can show your actual heart risk. Is that something I should look into?

Dear Worried, You’re smart to be thinking about this now. For years, cholesterol numbers have been the main way to estimate heart disease risk. But there’s another tool gaining attention that can offer a more direct look: a coronary artery calcium scan, or CAC scan.

This quick, noninvasive test looks for ac-

tual plaque buildup in your heart’s arteries, not just the risk of developing it.

Here’s why that matters. High cholesterol suggests you might develop heart disease someday. But calcium in your arteries means some disease is already present. The higher your calcium score, the greater your risk of a future heart attack or stroke. That makes this test especially useful for people like you with a family history and borderline numbers.

How it works A CAC scan is a specialized CT scan that takes about 10 minutes and doesn’t require needles or dyes. You

simply lie on a table while the scanner takes images of your heart. It uses a small amount of radiation, similar to a mammogram.

The result is a calcium score that reflects how much plaque is in your arteries: • A score of zero means no detectable plaque.

• A score from 1 to 100 indicates mild plaque.

• A score from 100 to 299 suggests moderate buildup.

• A score of 300 or higher points to more serious disease.

This number gives you and your doctor something concrete to work with. Instead of guessing about your risk, you can make more confident deci-

sions about whether to start a statin or focus on lifestyle changes alone.

Who needs it Not everyone needs a CAC scan. It’s most helpful for adults over 40 who have some risk factors, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease, but aren’t clearly high or low risk.

If your risk level is uncertain or you’re hesitant about taking a statin, the scan can help break the tie. It can also be a strong wake-up call. Many people who see plaque on their scan are more motivated to take medication, improve their diet, lose weight, and

stay active.

Getting one CAC scans are widely available at hospitals and imaging centers that offer CT services.

You’ll usually need a doctor’s order, but some centers offer selfpay screenings you can schedule yourself.

The scan typically costs about $75 to $200 out of pocket and usually isn’t something you need to repeat very often. Results are often available quickly, sometimes within a day or two.

A couple of caveats: A score of zero doesn’t mean you have no risk, and the test isn’t meant for diagnosing symptoms like chest pain.

It’s just one piece of the puzzle and should be considered along with

your

overall

health picture.
