Eight face Federal charges after ICE raid at Buckeye
A federal raid at the Buckeye Fire Equipment Company in Kings Mountain has resulted in federal charges against at least eight individuals, according to court documents released last week. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), executed a search warrant at the business on June 25. The raid was part of an ongoing federal investigation into possible financial and immigration-related crimes at the company.
The operation involved more than a dozen local, state, and federal agencies and led to the detention of at least 30 people. Officials stated that the investigation focuses on identity theft and other potential financial crimes. Out of the 30 people detained, at least eight now face federal charges. Seven of them are accused of illegally re-entering the United States after having
previously been deported.
The eighth individual faces charges for using false documents to gain employment.
The search warrant targeted aggravated identity theft and possible federal crimes linked to unauthorized employment. Authorities have not clarified whether further charges will be filed or whether the Buckeye Fire Equipment Company itself could face legal consequences. Meanwhile, the eight defendants face federal charges that could lead to prison sentences and further deportations.
The individuals charged with illegally re-entering the United States after deportation include Geovany Lopez Lopez, Humberto Guzman Lemus, Enrique Gil Rojano, Alberto Perez Mendoza, Arturo Albarras Altunar, Luis Antonio Martinez Lopez, and Angel Antonio Lara Reyes, according to Queen City News and other news outlets.
Law enforcement also arrested Jose De La Cruz-Lopez during the raid on June 25 at the Buckeye Fire Equipment Company. Unlike the others, he faces charges for the misuse of a Social Security number and using a false statement or document in an immigration matter. Jose De La Cruz-Lopez, from Veracruz, Mexico, admitted to being in the U.S. illegally for the past four years, according to federal documents. He reportedly worked at Buckeye Fire Equipment Company since 2022 and is accused of using a fake ID to get the job.
This federal investigation remains ongoing. It’s unclear if more charges are coming or if Buckeye Fire Equipment Company itself could face legal consequences. Meanwhile, the eight individuals now face serious federal charges that could result in prison time and removal from the country.
Healthy Together Cleveland EVERYONE EATS emergency Food fund drive
Healthy Together Cleveland (HTC) is responding to an alarming trend in Cleveland County: 1 in 6 people in the county are experiencing food insecurity. That means about 16,980 people do not have enough food, approximately the combined population of Kings Mountain, NC, and Boiling Springs, NC.
Due to recent FDA cuts to The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), local food pantries are being
impacted. A local organization, Washington Outreach Ministry (WOM), is one of those being affected. WOM supports 17 food pantries in Cleveland County alone. It is Cleveland County’s local food hub serving 15,000 people each month and is facing a $375,000 shortfall this year.
“No one should go hungry,” said Jeff Ross, Chairman of the Healthy Together Cleveland County Steering Committee. “We

believe in the power of community partnerships and helping our neighbors during tough times. It’s just the right thing to do.”

Duke study questions the impact of non-regulated elements in future mining operations
Lithium ore and mining waste from a historic lithium mine located west of Charlotte, North Carolina, are unlikely to contaminate surrounding waters with common pollutants such as arsenic and lead, according to a new study.
However, high levels of other metals — namely, lithium, rubidium, and cesium — do occur in waters associated with the mine.
The new findings, from Avner Vengosh, distinguished professor

of environmental quality at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, shed light on potential water quality impacts of legacy, or historic, lithium mining. They also provide baseline data for future studies exploring how reopening lithium mines in the N.C. Piedmont will likely affect the water quality of nearby drinking water resources.
“The world is increasingly relying on lithium for the green-energy transition, but previous studies on the environmental effects of hard-rock lithium mining show mixed results,” Vengosh said. “This study pro-
vides new, important data to clarify the possible environmental impacts.
The area where the Kings Mountain Mine is located was once the largest lithium-producing region in the world. Situated in wooded, rural terrain of the Piedmont, the mine opened in the 1950s and was abandoned in the 1980s, when more accessible lithium deposits drew prospectors to South America. The lithium at Kings Mountain primarily exists in granite-like rock called pegmatite, bound to a green-tinged mineral called spodumene. See STUDY, Page 5A

Piedmont Lithium's KM site is up for sale
Piedmont Lithium Inc. is divesting a 60.6-acre property located at Battleground Avenue and Dixon Dairy Road in Kings Mountain. Acquired in 2019 for $672,000, the property is currently listed at $3.6 million. In 2018, Piedmont Lithium acquired the Kings Mountain site, intending to construct a new lithium chemical facility as part of efforts to revive dormant lithium production in the region. Originally designated for a lithium conversion facility to support its Lithium projects in the Carolinas, the site is now being offered for sale following a strategic reassessment. Situated within 20 miles of Piedmont Lithium's spodumene mine and concentrator plant—both integral to the production of battery-grade lithium hydroxide—the site was once central to Piedmont's operational expansion. However, plans have shifted following Piedmont Lithium's merger agreement with See FOR SALE, Page 5A

On Saturday, July 12, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office responded to 2070 Biggers Lake Road for a kidnapping. Deputies received information that the suspect forced a female into a vehicle at gunpoint and left with her in a black Chevy Cruze. The female was identified, and criminal records show a previous domestic assault history between the two.
The suspect also assaulted another female on the scene, holding her with a firearm against her will. Neither the victims’ information nor their location will be released at this time, but they are safe.
Thomas Dewayne Lowery III was identified as the suspect and later located with the victim at 4804 April Drive in Gaston County. The suspect was arrested, and the victim

returned safely to her residence in Cleveland County.
Deputies, along with Officers from the Gaston County Police Department, were able to establish information that led to the seizure of 150 grams of cocaine and a firearm at the suspect’s residence. Lowery, who is a convicted felon, was believed to be in possession of
these items, and charges are pending in Gaston County. This arrest led to a violent gang member being taken off the street.
Lowery was arrested in Cleveland County for the following charges and is being held with no bond:

The Cleveland County Health Department now offers Narcan/naloxone for free to anyone. Come through our drive-thru Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at 200 South Post Rd, Shelby, NC. Narcan/naloxone is used to reverse opioid overdose and saves lives. According to the National Institutes of Health, families with loved ones who struggle with opioid addiction should have naloxone nearby, ask their family member to carry it, and let friends know where it is. People should still
call 911 immediately in the event of an overdose.
Naloxone is being used more by police officers, emergency medical technicians, and non-emergency first responders than before. In most states, people who are at risk or who know someone at risk for an opioid overdose can be trained on how to give naloxone. Families can ask their pharmacists or health care providers how to use the devices.
Detectives determined that Snider had been involved in the sale of methamphetamine and firearms from his residence. On May 22, 2025, the Gaston County Police Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant at the home, seizing methamphetamine and a firearm. Snider was not at the residence during the search and was considered a fugitive.
In the early morning hours of July 3, the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force located Snider and safely

took him into custody on multiple outstanding warrants.
Snider is facing eight felony charges: Three counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
Possession of a Stolen Firearm
Possession of Methamphetamine

Manufacture Methamphetamine
Maintain a Dwelling for Controlled Substances
Snider is currently being held at the Gaston County Jail without bond. Through strategic coordination and proactive investigations, the Gaston County Police Department remains committed to reducing the prevalence of dangerous drugs and illegal firearms in our community. These ongoing efforts are part of our mission to foster a safer, more secure environment for all residents of Gaston County.

How many friends do you have?
How many friends do you have? Possibly more or less than you think. Your real friends show up when everyone else has walked away. We have many acquaintances in life but not that many close friends. How many people know you and still love you and want to be around you? So many of our relationships today are surface relationships. People only know your surface. They don’t know your hurts, fears, problems, stresses, failures and so much more.

Glenn Mollette Guest Editorial
with you in your failures. Real friendship doesn’t hinge on a failure. Friendship supports, helps and communicates. Most of us don’t communicate unless we feel it’s safe to do so. You don’t want to talk to someone who is going to blister you with judgement and condemnation. Although a good friend will listen and try to steer you in the right direction without emotionally debilitating you. No one wants to share their aspirations or pain with someone who is a critical, arrogant know it all.
Most likely your spouse or significant other knows you well and still loves you and is there for you. Most parents are there for their children and grandchildren but they are family. You don’t really consider them friends because the relationship is deeper and more intimate. However, it’s nice if you feel like you have family who are friends.
A friend will be there regardless of success or failure. They rejoice in your successes and hurt
Some of your best friends may not be the people you run around with all the time. They actually may be those people you just see occasionally but when you do see them, there is a peaceful bond of respect, love and open dialogue.
A real friend will try to come to you if you need them. A real friend will help problem-solve with the assurance that whatever you are talking about won’t go any further. A real friend can keep your secrets, if you have any.
A real friend will not stab you in the back or cut your throat. An old friend of mine who has passed on had this saying about an acquaintance, “He would cut his mother’s throat to get ahead.” Keep this in mind, if someone has stabbed you in the back before they are likely to do it again. If he or she has fooled you once then shame on them. If you allow them to fool you twice then shame on you.
Life can be interesting with the people we encounter along the way. We meet a lot of good people. We meet some who are not so great. It’s critical to our well-being that we are able to know the difference and the sooner the better.
Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13 He certainly did that.
Give thanks today for your friend, or friends. It’s always good to make a new friend and it’s certainly worthwhile to maintain an old one, if it’s a good one.

US bans illegal aliens from HHS funding & programs
On July 10, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a significant policy shift to restore compliance with federal law and ensure that taxpayer-funded program benefits intended for the American people are not diverted to subsidize undocumented immigrants.
sHHS has formally rescinded a 1998 interpretation of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA), issued during the Clinton Administration, which improperly extended certain federal public benefits to illegal aliens.
For over two decades, the 1998 policy improperly narrowed the scope of PRWORA, undercutting the law by allowing illegal aliens to access programs Congress intended only for the American people. With this update, HHS is complying with the law, ensuring that federal benefits are administered with transparency, legal integrity, and fairness to the American people.
“For too long, the government has diverted hardworking Americans’ tax dollars to incentivize illegal immigration,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. “Today’s action changes that—it restores integrity to federal social programs, enforces the rule of law, and protects vital resources for the American people.”
The new policy applies PRWORA’s plain-language definition of “Federal public benefit,” reverses outdated exclusions, affirms that pro-
grams serving individuals, households, or families are subject to eligibility restrictions, and clarifies that no HHS programs have been formally exempted under PRWORA’s limited exceptions.
Head Start is among the programs included in the updated and expanded list of classified “Federal public benefits” under PRWORA, ensuring that enrollment in Head Start is reserved for American citizens from now on. Preliminary analysis by HHS estimates American citizens could receive as much as $374 million in additional Head Start services annually.
“Alongside HHS, the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) is committed to providing and protecting resources that serve America’s most vulnerable,” said Acting Assistant Secretary Andrew Gradison. “Head Start’s classification under the new PRWORA interpretation puts American families first by ensuring taxpayer-funded benefits are reserved for eligible individuals.”
The revised list newly includes all programs now classified as “Federal public benefits” under PRWORA, including access to Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, Community Mental Health Services Block Grants, Community Services Block Grants (CSBG), Head Start, the Health Center Program, and Health Workforce Programs not otherwise previously covered (including grants, loans, scholarships, payments, and loan repayments). Funding for Men-
tal Health and Substance Use Disorder Treatment, Prevention, and Recovery Support Services Programs administered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness Grant Programs, and Substance Use Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services Block Grants is banned. Access to Title IV-E Educational and Training Voucher Programs, Title IV-E Kinship Guardianship Assistance Programs, Title IV-E Prevention Services Programs, and Title X Family Planning Programs have also been eliminated. Other programs may also be affected.
This policy change aligns with long-standing congressional intent and recent Executive Orders by President Trump, including Executive Order 14218 of February 19, 2025, “Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Open Borders,” which prioritizes legal compliance and the protection of public benefits for eligible Americans. While the updated interpretation does not alter funding levels, it ensures that public resources are no longer used to incentivize illegal immigration. The notice establishing the revised policy takes effect immediately upon publication in the Federal Register and has a 30-day comment period. HHS will issue further guidance to affected programs to ensure full implementation. The text of the notice may be found at https://www. hhs.gov/sites/default/files/ prwora-notice.pdf.

Kennedy pledges to improve healthcare’s prior authorization system
On June 23, U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS)
Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator
Dr. Mehmet Oz today met with industry leaders to discuss their pledge to streamline and improve the prior authorization processes for Medicare Advantage, Medicaid Managed Care, Health Insurance Marketplace® and commercial plans covering nearly eight out of 10 Americans.
In a roundtable discussion hosted by the HHS, health insurers pledged six key reforms aimed at cutting red tape, accelerating care decisions, and enhancing transparency for patients and providers. Their commitments reinforce the role of CMS in monitoring outcomes and promoting accountability. Companies represented at the roundtable included Aetna, Inc., AHIP, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Centene Corporation, The Cigna Group, Elevance Health, GuideWell, Highmark Health, Humana, Inc., Kaiser Permanente, and UnitedHealthcare.
“Thank you to the insurance companies for making these commitments today. Americans shouldn’t have to negotiate with their insurer to get the care they need,” said Secretary Kennedy. “Pitting patients and their doctors against massive companies was not good for anyone. We are actively working with industry to make it easier to get prior authorization for common services such as diagnostic
imaging, physical therapy, and outpatient surgery.”
“These commitments represent a step in the right direction toward restoring trust, easing burdens on providers, and helping patients receive timely, evidence-based care,” said Administrator Oz. “We applaud these voluntary actions by the private sector, which is how these types of issues should be solved. CMS will be evaluating progress and driving accountability toward our shared goals, as we continue to champion solutions that put patients first.”
Participating health insurers have pledged to standardize electronic prior authorization submissions using Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®)-based application programming interfaces, enhance transparency and communication around authorization decisions and appeals, expand real-time responses to minimize delays in care with real-time approvals for most requests by 2027, and ensure that medical professionals review all clinical denials.
The participating health insurers further committed to reducing the overall number of medical services that require prior authorization by January 1, 2026. They will honor existing authorizations made during insurance transitions to ensure continuity of care.
The announcement won praise from members of Congress.
“It was an honor to attend this discussion with Secretary Kennedy and CMS Administrator Dr.
Oz,” U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-KS) said. “This is an important topic that has continued to be an issue for far too long. I applaud the leadership of Secretary Kennedy and President Trump for bringing us all to the table to find solutions for our patients and providers.”
“Thank you to President Trump, Secretary Kennedy, and Administrator Oz for working to improve the prior authorization process for American patients,”
Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (R-NC) and cochair of the House GOP Doctors Caucus, said. “As a physician for over 30 years, I witnessed the ridiculous and ever-increasing obstructions caused by insurance companies to delay or deny care to patients. These bureaucratic hurdles end up hurting patients and those who care for them. Practices have had to hire many more staff just simply to fight with insurance companies. I have made reform a top priority of mine since coming to Congress. I am grateful for the collaborative effort by stakeholders to make commitments to streamline approvals and look forward to them delivering on this pledge.”
These private sector reforms complement ongoing regulatory efforts by CMS to improve prior authorization interoperability within Medicare Advantage, Medicaid Managed Care, and Health Insurance Marketplace®.

STUDY
From Page 1A
For their study, the researchers collected samples of pegmatite and waste rocks from in and around the mine, as well as samples of tailings — crushed rocks left over from historic spodumene extraction. They also sampled groundwater from the mine and surface water from Kings Creek, which flows from the mine. Samples from various piedmont streams provided baseline data on water quality.
The researchers pulverized rock samples and mixed them in a solution designed to test how various contaminants might enter the surrounding environment. These laboratory experiments simulate how contaminants in the rocks would leach out under natural conditions.
The researchers then analyzed the solutions, as well as the surface water and groundwater samples, for a wide range of metals commonly used to evaluate water quality. The study was published online in the journal Science of the Total Environment on Nov. 4.
Leaching experiments and water samples analyzed in the study showed common regulated contaminants — including arsenic, lead, copper and nickel — at levels below drinking water and ecological standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
“The fact that we don’t see these toxic contaminants was, in some way, a relief, because it suggests that future lithium exploration in North Carolina

would not cause major negative water quality effects with respect to these elements,” Vengosh said.
However, the team found high levels of other metals in the mine site relative to their concentrations in the piedmont water resources.
“We detected elevated concentrations of lithium, which was expected, but also found rubidium and cesium at levels you normally don’t see in natural waters, and that are not federally regulated,” said first author Gordon Williams, a Ph.D. student in Vengosh’s lab and the Division of Earth and Climate Sciences. “An outstanding question, then, is how these elements affect human and environmental health.”
Leaching experiments and evidence from water samples also indicated that the legacy lithium mine does not contribute to environmentally harmful acidic runoff commonly associated with other mining operations, like coal mining. Rather, interactions between the ore and waste rock samples and water led to temporary alkaline, or basic, conditions.
The study did not address the effects of active lithium mining and processing on water quality, the authors emphasized.
“Excavating and crushing ore is just one aspect of lithium mining. Processing — which requires a chemical treatment to separate lithium from spodumene — may include additional chemicals that could potentially affect water quality,” Williams said. “When lithium mining ramps up again in this area, processing could have impacts on
local water resources that we didn’t measure,” he cautioned.
The researchers are now extending their study by assessing drinking water quality across a band of lithium-rich geological terrain in the piedmont. By sampling private wells and surface water, they can better understand the potential impacts of lithium mining on water quality in North Carolina.
The study was funded by the Duke University Climate Research Innovation Seed Program (CRISP) and the Albemarle Corporation.
In response to an inquiry by the Herald regarding this study, Albemarle spokesperson Ryan Dean shared, “In preparation for the potential redevelopment of the Kings Mountain Mine, we have conducted surface and groundwater studies that assess decades of data and we do not anticipate any adverse impacts to the quality or quantity of surrounding water resources.
Dean continued, “During mine operations, water that is unsuitable for direct discharge will either be recycled for use in our mineral processing facility or sent to a water treatment plant, which is designed to ensure the water meets state and federal environmental regulations. We have an extensive surface and groundwater monitoring network established to monitor water quality throughout the mine’s life cycle.
“Through the deployment of safe and environmentally responsible mining methods, we will continue to protect and care for water resources.”

What is Food Insecurity? (Source: USDA Feeding America) Food insecurity is defined as not having reliable access to enough food for a healthy, active lifestyle. Causes include income-related factors, high cost of living, community factors, and health-related factors. Food insecurity can affect mental and physical health, overall well-being, and school and work performance.

Listen to God When You Are Offended

PASTOR RICHARD SMITH
“Listen to my prayer, O God; do not ignore my plea, hear me and answer me; My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught at the voice of the enemy, at the stares of the wicked; for they bring down suffering upon me in anger. My heart is in anguish within me.” (Psalm 55:1-4). In this instructional Psalm King David cries out about how, someone has offended him.
Like David you will experience disappointment and frustration from others and that can turn into animosity, resentments, a deep thirst for vindication and even revenge. As we read further in the same Psalm, we find it is a close friend that has caused David this anguish. “Now it is not an enemy who insults me otherwise- I could bear it; it is not a foe who revolts against me otherwise- I could hide from him. But it is you, a man who is my peer, my companion and good friend! We used to have close fellowship; we walked with the crowd into the house of God.” (Psalm 55:12-14)
Because we are human we have a sin nature, making it inevitable that people will offend and cause injury to one another. This will happen in churches, at work, between families and friends. Dear brothers and sisters be aware that the evil one (Satan) seeks to trap us with bitterness that can have a paralyzing effect on your life. You can become obsessed with how someone has offended you and become trapped in a cycle of emotional and spiritual hurt. Satan has numerous ways to attack us with spiritual arrows that keep us immobilized and from experiencing the Joy of the Lord. If you
have been betrayed by broken promises, false accusations, abusive behavior, rejection, even a betrayal of some confidential matter, you are not alone. King David is not the only one that wrote about this in the Bible. King Jesus had to deal with a disciple that attempted to come against His mission of going to the cross to reconcile the world to God through Jesus who is the Christ (chosen sacrificial lamb of God). Jesus sternly rebuked Peter saying, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block (offensive) to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of
man.” (Matthew 16:23). Jesus did not allow Peter to hinder Him from completing His mission. King Jesus kept focused on the mission of God. Brothers and sisters do not allow past hurts and hangups to debilitate you. Seek God’s face like David did in this Psalm. Be honest with yourself and realize we all have the capacity to offend and injure one another. If we refuse to recognize the dangers of being resentful and angry we can become blinded to our own sin. Anger can fester in one’s heart and manifest into a spiritual downward spiral of destruction. What is the remedy? We should all
pray and ask God to show us our own sin and ask for forgiveness. Like King David we need to cry out to the one who can heal a broken heart. Realize you cannot do that alone; you need God’s help. Go to Him now in prayer and listen to what God wants you to do. God is always on the side of those who genuinely want reconciliation. “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” (2 Corinthians 13:14)

Anker Innovations initiates global recall on select power banks
Earlier this year, Anker implemented a series of enhanced quality assurance protocols designed to detect manufacturing issues earlier in the production cycle. These safeguards, including expanded component-level audits and supplier testing, helped them identify a potential issue with common lithium-ion battery cells from a single vendor.
While the likelihood of malfunction is considered minimal, out of an abundance of caution, they have decided to initiate a voluntary global recall of several Anker power bank models. they have formally notified and are coordinating with regulatory authorities in all regions to ensure the recall is conducted in compliance with all applicable local guidelines.
The following products may be affected:
• Anker Power Bank (10K, 22.5W) — Model A1257\
• Anker Power Bank (20,000mAh, 22.5W, Built-In USB-C Cable) — Model A1647
• Anker MagGo Power Bank (10,000mAh, 7.5W) — Model A1652
• Anker Zolo Power Bank (20K, 30W, Built-In USB-C and Lightning Cable) — Model A1681

• Anker Zolo Power Bank (20K, 30W, Built-In USB-C Cable) — Model A1689
How to Tell If You Have an Affected Power Bank
Step 1: Check your model number, located on the back or side of your power bank.
If it matches one of the following models (A1257, A1647, A1652, A1681, A1689), proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Verify your serial number or submit your proof of purchase using our online recall form: http:// www.anker.com/rc2506form
If your unit is confirmed to be part of the recall, please submit the Recall Claim form
• If your product is confirmed to be affected:
Stop using the device immediately.
• Do not dispose of the power bank until you receive confirmation from Anker that your unit qualifies.
Click on this link for instructions on how to request a replacement or a gift card (redeemable on the Anker website).
How to Safely Dispose of Your Power Bank
After receiving confirmation from Anker that your unit qualifies for a replacement or gift card, please dispose of the affected unit at a certified facility that accepts recalled lithium-ion batteries.
Do not discard this recalled lithium-ion battery in the trash, general recycling streams (e.g., streetlevel or curbside recycling bins), or in used battery drop-off boxes commonly found at retail or home improvement stores. These drop-off points are not equipped to handle recalled lithium-ion products like power banks.
Recalled lithium-ion batteries must be handled differently from regular batteries because they pose a higher risk of fire. Your local Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection center may accept this power bank for safe disposal. Before visiting, contact the facility to confirm whether it accepts lithium-ion battery-powered devices from recall programs.
For more information, please visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) page on lithium-ion battery disposal: https://www.epa. gov/recycle/used-lithium-ion-batteries

Gaston County’s 10th confirmed rabies case
On Thursday, July 10, at approximately 4:30 pm, Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement received a call in reference to a family’s young dog that had been exposed to a bat in their yard located in the 200 block of Silvercliff Drive, Mount Holly, NC. Animal Care and Enforcement Specialists investigated the incident and impounded the bat on Thursday, July 10. The bat was sent to the NC Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh on Friday, July 11. The official laboratory results were received on
Monday, July 14, at approximately 1:00 pm, indicating that the bat tested positive for rabies. Due to the age of the young dog, it had not yet received a rabies vaccination. This dog will be kept under a strict quarantine at a local veterinarian's office for 4 months for observation in compliance with state regulations. Animal Care and Enforcement completed a neighborhood canvass around Silvercliff Drive, Mount Holly, NC, to notify the community of the positive rabies results and verify
rabies vaccinations for family pets in the area.
Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement also notified the Gaston County Department of Health and Human Services about the incident.
The Gaston County Police Department Animal Care and Enforcement Division stresses the importance of having a valid rabies vaccination for all pets’ health and safety, as well as the health and safety of their owners and community. This represents the 10th confirmed rabies case in Gaston County this year.

Remembering a man of Faith and hard work
By Melody Hord
I married Rick Hord in 1997. He owned a lovely home on 5 acres in Kings Mountain. Rick glowingly tells the story of how he was blessed with the property. It had been a muchused pasture owned by his grandfather, Forrest Hord. Forrest sold Rick 5 acres of pastureland for $25.00! Rick was able to use the land as equity in order to get a loan to build his house. Forrest had passed in 1990, so I never had the pleasure of knowing this hard-working quintessential farmer. During his prime, he got up about 4 or 5 in the morning. The cows needed milking, the eggs gathered and the chickens fed. There was an orchard of succulent fruit and pecan trees. He labored over strawberries, crowder peas, okra, tomatoes, corn and sweet potatoes. (Sweet potatoes were a favorite breakfast food.)
In the beginning, Forrest used a mule to plow, and then had to further cultivate the soil through a process called harrowing. Harrowing is when the farmer uses a tool with teeth, discs or blades after the field is plowed in order to break up the clods, promote soil aeration, or whatever necessary to refine the dirt. Later, Forrest proudly upgraded to a Ford tractor which plowed, as well as pulled the disc for harrowing.
Forrest’s wife, Ellen, was an integral part of the farm life. She churned butter and relentlessly cooked meals. She kept “Hoe Cake” (sort of like a huge biscuit or flattened cornbread) as well as fried fatback on the kitchen table. She kept the yard in front of their white house adorned with flowers and shrubs. Forrest and Ellen were married almost 55 years
before Ellen died suddenly of a heart attack at age 73. The funeral was at Patterson Grove Baptist Church officiated by Pastor Richard Plyer.
In the beginning, the church bombarded Forrest with concern; cakes, pies, casseroles, cards, and visits. Then the church visits pretty much stopped except for the pianist. Forrest had been the choir director at Patterson Grove for many years and had been the chairman of the deacons. The pianist kept coming by with hot meals for quite a few months, then her visits tapered off as well. Thankfully, after Ellen’s death, Forrest had two sons that checked on him routinely. Rick’s dad, Harold, stopped by daily. Rick’s mom and dad faithfully picked Forrest up every Sunday to go to church and they had Sunday lunch together.
During his later years without Ellen, Forrest lived with his adorable Dachshund dog, named Baby. He wasn’t doing much farming anymore, so he spent a lot of time simply sitting outside in a metal chair with Baby on his lap. A highlight of the day was when he and Baby crossed the road to get the mail. He was lonely. When Rick stopped by to sit with him, he told the same fond stories over and over; such as how quickly he got the farm paid off; how a cigarette or drop of alcohol had never touched his lips.
One morning, Forrest headed out in his 1964 white Ford Falcon to pay his insurance bill. He got to the agency before they opened. Instead of just waiting around, he decided to tool around town.
While he was out driving around, Rick’s father stopped by to check on him. Hours went by, and Forrest did not return home. The family started to worry. About 8 hours later, Rick’s dad got a call from a

owbox, in our home. The cost to mail a letter in 1925 was two cents. When I see Forrest for the first time in heaven, I will thank him for the lush land. I look forward to listening intently to his
course, Baby on his lap. (Melody Hord will be facilitating a writing class at the Patrick Senior Center in July. If you are over 55 years old, you are welcome to sign up. Call 704 734 0447.)

Cleveland County high schoolers introduced to Healthcare careers
Caroline Sparrow is a rising 11th-grader at Kings Mountain High School. She has an interest in anesthesiology and wanted to find out if that’s the right career path for her. The new Summer Bridge program held recently at Gardner-Webb University gave her a hands-on introduction to anesthesiology along with various other healthcare professions.
Sparrow, with the help of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Kaitlin Benedict from Atrium Health Cleveland, intubated a mannequin and was amazed by the realistic procedure. Her friend, Tristian Ballard, also a rising 11thgrader at Kings Mountain High School, was excited to perform the intubation as well. Motivated by his mother’s determination and success, Ballard has already decided that he wants to be a nurse.
“I saw her go to school later in her life,” he offered. “She wanted to be a nurse when she was a lot younger, but she never got the chance. She went back recently, and I saw her do
that and learned a little bit about it and she was a big inspiration to me.”
The intubation activity was part of a career fair, where the students rotated to different stations to learn about several types of health professions. Sparrow and Ballard also practiced surgical techniques using a simulator provided by Cleveland Community College Surgical Technology Program. They participated in other learning experiences during the week and received third-party credentialing in CPR and Stop the Bleed, making them more prepared to advance in their education and careers.
The immersive experience was offered two separate weeks and welcomed a total of 26 students. It was made possible by funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation Community-Based Grants Initiative. Gardner-Webb collaborated with community partners, Cleveland Community College (CCC) and Cleveland County Schools to secure a total of over $1.2 million to offer the camp for high schoolers

The basics of container gardening
Gardening is a rewarding hobby that has been linked to health benefits like reduced stress and improved mental well-being. Gardening also can lead to an inviting home landscape full of attractive blooms and/or delicious foods.
Backyard gardens have long been planted after clearing a plot of land, tilling and amending the soil, and planting rows of favorite crops. However, gardening can be less labor-intensive and even more successful when people consider the many benefits of container gardening.
What is container gardening?
As its name implies, container gardening is growing plants inside of containers. These containers can be flower pots, rectangular deck boxes or even large raised garden beds.
Pros to container gardening
One of the advantages of container gardening is that plants can be moved in and out of sunlight to ensure the right growing conditions. This isn’t as easily achieved when gardens are stationary. Also, beginner gardeners may be more able to control soil conditions inside of a small container rather than a vast ground-based garden, which will require a good deal of manual labor.
Pots and boxes also can be grouped together to create eye-popping displays, usually at lower costs than the sheer volume of plants that would be needed to fill out an expansive landscape.
Cons to container gardening
Container garden plants will not have direct access to the ground, so they need gardeners to create the ideal growing conditions. Developing the right care formula can be challenging. The

as part of a Healthcare Educational Pathway. Leaders from all three entities presented separate proposals to form this plan to address regional health workforce shortages, particularly in
nursing and allied health professions.
Associate Professor of Nursing Dr. Jessica Ivey and Assistant Professor of Nursing Dr. Angel Queen coordinated the Summer
Bridge program and were enthused about the inquisitive and interested students who attended.
“We've worked really hard the past couple months to prepare a curriculum for these students over the last four days,” Ivey observed.
“They are loving it. We have introduced students to a variety of different healthcare professions— pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy—and we’re hoping that this will help them make decisions and continue to stay here in Cleveland County and have a career. We are excited, and we're excited to do this again next year.”
Queen further addressed the goals of the program and the importance of exposing young people to opportunities in their hometowns. “There's so much that Cleveland County offers with them being able to do a lot of studying in high school,” she asserted.
“Exposing them early to how they can get their associate degree or get their bachelor's degree and even move up to master’s or doctoral programs helps
them set those short-term and long-term goals, and how to achieve those. A lot of times, you just have to plant that seed. And then, you have all of us that help support and water and help that grow into whatever they decide to be when they grow up. We need different providers in different areas and different specialties, and so it's so important that we foster these young students, and we expose them to all the different avenues that they can do.”
Sparrow and Ballard said they appreciated all the opportunities the week provided, including staying in a residence hall on Gardner-Webb’s campus. “It's actually good because I feel like it pushes me to want to do more for my own education,” Sparrow shared. “It’s really special because we didn’t have to pay for any of this.” Ballard added, “I enjoyed the campus the most. It's a beautiful campus. I learned a lot about being a nurse, and what type of nurses there are and what I have to do to become a nurse.”

home and garden resource
The Spruce says that drainage is an important factor in container gardening, and most containers do not offer enough drainage holes. If water cannot escape the soil, the roots of the plants can rot and die. It’s not enough to add stones or gravel to the bottom of containers. Drill additional holes in the bottom (1⁄2-inch in diameter for small or medium-sized pots; one inch in diameter for larger pots). Also, be sure to check on soil moisture so that watering can be adjusted. During hot stretches, plants may need to be watered more frequently.
Plan for plants that play well Grouping plants together can create visually stunning combinations. However, it is important to choose plants that require the same amount of light and moisture. Look at plant tags when visiting the garden center and select complementary plants, or ask a store employee. Mixing different plant shapes, colors and leaf textures, as well as plants of various heights, can help containers look filled out.
Feed plants accordingly Plants need nutrition to thrive in containers. Quality potting mixes will contain fertilizers, but nutrition will wane over time. Every couple of weeks, container plants will need either fresh potting mix or granular fertilizer added to feed them.

Oregon State University Extension Services suggests using a slow-release fertilizer or worm castings several times throughout the season.
Container gardening is a great way to add plants to smaller patios, reduce the workload involved in maintaining expansive gardens, and customize conditions for optimal growth.

popular Kroger grocery store chain are being recalled due to a lethal listeria outbreak that has now caused three deaths, one fetal loss, and 17 illnesses as of June 20. The food items, assembled and ready for microwaving, were sold nationwide under the Marketside and Home Chef brands.
The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and its public health partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are investigating the outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes linked to this recall. Both partners issued alerts related to this outbreak.
FreshRealm establishments in San Clemente, Calif., Montezuma, Ga., and Indianapolis, Ind., the manufacturer of the product, have recalled their chicken fettuccine Alfredo products that may be adulterated with an outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), the FSIS announced. Out of an abundance of caution, the company is voluntarily re-

calling all products produced before June 17, 2025, that are available in commerce under the following brand names.
The following ready-to-eat products were shipped to Walmart and Kroger chain retail locations nationwide:
• 32.8-oz. tray packages containing “MARKETSIDE GRILLED
CHICKEN ALFREDO WITH FETTUCCINE

Tender Pasta with Creamy Alfredo Sauce, White Meat Chicken and Shaved Parmesan Cheese” with best-by date 06/27/25 or prior.
• 12.3 oz. Tray packages containing “MARKETSIDE GRILLED CHICKEN ALFREDO WITH FETTUCCINE
Tender Pasta with Creamy Alfredo Sauce, White Meat Chicken, Broccoli and Shaved Parmesan Cheese” with best-by date 06/26/25 or prior.
• 12.5 oz. Tray packages containing “HOME CHEF Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo with pasta, grilled white meat chicken, and Parmesan cheese, with best-by date 06/19/25 or prior.
The products bear the USDA mark of inspection on the product label as well as establishment numbers “EST. P-50784,” “EST. P-47770,” or “EST. P-47718” printed on the side of the packaging.
FSIS and public health partners are investigating an outbreak of Lm that
currently includes 17 ill people in 13 states. As of June 17, 2025, there have been three reported deaths and one fetal loss associated with this outbreak. The outbreak strain of Lm was isolated from ill people on dates ranging from August 2024 to May 2025. The same outbreak strain was isolated from a routine chicken fettuccine alfredo sample collected by FSIS in a FreshRealm establishment in March 2025. The chicken fettuccine alfredo represented by this sample was held during sampling, destroyed, and never entered commerce. The subsequent investigations at the establishment that produced this product and into the product ingredients have not identified the source of contamination. FSIS also used purchase records from two ill people to trace purchased chicken fettuccine alfredo products to FreshRealm establishments. Two additional people who were sick verbally described the chicken fettuccine Al-

fredo products they had purchased. FSIS identified products produced by FreshRealm that matched the descriptions during follow-up at the retail stores where they shopped. This investigation is ongoing.
FSIS is sharing what is currently known regarding products associated with the outbreak as the agency continues to work with public health partners to identify whether a specific ingredient in the chicken fettuccine alfredo may be the source of this strain of Lm.
Consumption of food contaminated with L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, people outside these risk groups are affected.
Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections occur in older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. People in higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after consum-

ing contaminated food should seek medical care and inform their healthcare provider about the contaminated food.
“FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers,” states the USDA recall advisory. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
FSIS advises all consumers to prepare their meat products, including fresh and frozen, safely, and only to consume premade meals, such as chicken fettuccine Alfredo, that have been cooked to a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. The only way to confirm that premade meals are cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature.
Consumers with questions regarding the recall can contact FreshRealm’s customer service at (888) 244-1562.
Customers with food safety questions can call the toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-MPHotline (888) 6746854 or send a question via email to MPHotline@ usda.gov. For consumers who need to report a problem with a meat, poultry, or egg product, the online Electronic Consumer Complaint Monitoring System can be accessed 24 hours a day at https:// foodcomplaint.fsis.usda. gov/eCCF/.

Plastic Medicare cards pose new risks amid surge in scams
As Medicare fraud continues to cost taxpayers billions annually, a new wave of scams involving so-called "plastic Medicare cards" has emerged, raising serious concerns among consumer advocates and federal agencies. These scams exploit confusion among beneficiaries and capitalize on the misconception that Medicare is replacing its traditional paper cards with plastic or chipped versions.
Medicare currently issues paper cards made of durable cardstock, not plastic. Yet scammers have increasingly contacted beneficiaries claiming that Medicare is upgrading to plastic cards with embedded chips for added security. These fraudsters often pose as Medicare representatives and request personal information, including Medicare numbers, Social Security numbers, and even banking details, under the guise of verifying eligibility for the new card. If you get a call about your new Medicare card, be cautious—even if the caller knows your personal information. Scammers can easily access these details, and Medicare will not contact you unexpectedly or without your consent. Don't share financial or Medicare information over the phone.
Kim McKenna, coordinator for the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner's Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP), a Medicare fraud prevention agency, warns that these scams are not only widespread but also highly effective. "The scammer will say they need to confirm the Medicare ID and other personal information," McKenna explained in an article published by AARP. "In some cases, they tell the person they just need to provide banking account information to make sure they can continue paying their premiums."
Once scammers obtain this sensitive data, they can commit a range of fraudulent activities. These include submitting bogus claims to Medicare for medical equipment, genetic testing kits, or hospice services that were never delivered. In some cases, criminals have even enrolled beneficiaries in hospice care without their knowledge, effectively blocking them from receiving legitimate medical services.
In a recent article posted by SMP, the California Health Advocates organization has also reported a surge in these scams. "Scammers may falsely tell you that Medicare is

again issuing new cards— perhaps plastic ones, metal ones, chipped cards, or black and white COVID19 cards," the group stated. "This is a scam." They emphasize that Medicare will never call beneficiaries uninvited to request personal information or charge a fee for a new card.
The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has repeatedly clarified that it does not issue plastic cards and does not contact beneficiaries by phone to verify information. Any unsolicited call requesting such details should be treated as a red flag.
The appeal of plastic cards is understandable. Paper cards can wear out over time, and many beneficiaries worry about damage or loss. However, Medicare advises against laminating the card, as it can interfere with security features and scanning equipment.
Instead, beneficiaries should use protective sleeves or carry the card only when necessary.
The financial impact of Medicare fraud is staggering. According to AARP, fraud, errors, and abuse
cost the Medicare system an estimated $60 billion annually. While not all of this stems from card-related scams, the proliferation of plastic card fraud contributes significantly to the problem.
To protect themselves, beneficiaries should follow these key guidelines:
Never share your Medicare number or personal information with unsolicited callers.
Hang up immediately if someone claims to be from Medicare and asks for verification.
Report suspicious activity to the Senior Medicare Patrol at https://cahealthadvocates.org/ or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Store your Medicare card securely and only carry the card when attending medical appointments.
As scammers grow more sophisticated, public awareness remains the most effective defense. By understanding the risks and recognizing the signs of fraud, Medicare beneficiaries can help protect their identities and maintain the integrity of the Medicare system.

Oscar Meyer turkey bacon recall
Kraft Heinz Foods Company, a Newberry, South Carolina establishment, recalled approximately 367,812 pounds of fully cooked turkey bacon products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on July 2. The turkey bacon was produced from April 24, 2025, through June 11, 2025. The following products are subject to recall:

• 12-oz. vacuum-packed packages of "Oscar Mayer Turkey BACON ORIGINAL" and universal product code (UPC) "071871548601" printed on the packaging under the barcode, "use by" dates ranging "18 JUL 2025" to "02 AUG 2025," and lot code "RS40."
• 36-oz. packages containing three 12-oz. vacuum-packed packages of "Oscar Mayer Turkey BACON ORIGINAL" and universal product code (UPC) "071871548748" printed on the packaging under the barcode, "use by" dates ranging "23 JUL 2025" to "04 SEP 2025," and lot codes "RS19," "RS40," or "RS42."
• 48-oz. packages containing four 12-oz. vacuum-packed packages of "Oscar Mayer Turkey BACON ORIGINAL" and UPC "071871548793" printed on the packaging under the barcode and "use by" dates ranging "18 JUL 2025" to "04 SEP 2025," and lot codes "RS19," "RS40," or "RS42."
The products subject to recall bear the USDA mark of inspection on the front of the label. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide, and some packages were exported to the British Virgin Islands and Hong Kong.
The problem was discovered after the establishment's laboratory testing
indicated the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes (Lm). There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions associated with the consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected. The FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

How to make a backyard safe for dogs
Dogs, particularly puppies, can be full of boundless energy. Channeling that energy into exercise with long walks or play sessions can help stem dogs’ propensity to get into trouble around the house as they burn off extra adrenaline. Pets who don’t have an energy outlet may chew off-limits objects or get into other mischief.
According to the American Kennel Club, the amount of exercise a dog needs depends on the animal’s age and breed. For example, border collies or Siberian huskies may require much more exercise than English bulldogs, simply because the former are working breeds. Pet owners with large backyards often find those outdoor spots are ideal for when their dogs get the “zoomies,” something that tends to be a daily occurrence. Letting their dogs run around yards, whether on their own or chasing tossed tennis balls, is an ideal way to provide exercise and tire out pups. In such scenarios, it’s vital that pups have a dog-friendly yard in which to play. Use safe lawn care products

tact with chemically treated lawns can cause a number of health issues for dogs, such as allergies or intestinal upset.
Switching to native grasses can reduce the need to use chemicals to get lush lawns. When supplementation is needed, homeowners can switch to organic products or natural compost as safer alternatives than chemical-based products.
Fence off the yard
An expanse of grass is the perfect place to frolic or enjoy some sunbathing —
Off-leash running and bounding through the yard will make any dog smile. However, a fence is a musthave to ensure a dog doesn’t become an escape artist. Be sure the fence is high

branches or broken fence panels. Also, keep shrubs and grass trimmed to reduce flea and tick populations on the property.
Avoid poisonous plants
Certain plants can be dangerous if they’re consumed by curious pups. Chrysanthemums, peonies, irises, and hydrangeas are some plants that can be poisonous. For a full list of poisonous plants, visit the ASPCA website (aspca. org).
enough so that the pup cannot jump over it. Burying chicken wire in the dirt beneath the lower edge of the fence also can help prevent dogs who like to dig from exiting by crawling underneath the fence. Consider installing a lock on the fence gate so that no one can wander in and surprise the dog, which may startle the animal and prompt it to defend the property. A lock also helps prevent dog theft. Keep the yard tidy
Maintaining a clean yard also is key to safety. Inspect the yard regularly to make sure nothing is around that can prove harmful, whether it’s poison ivy, felled
Keep an eye on animals Dogs can spend some unattended time in the yard, but check in from time to time. Should wildlife get into the yard, dogs may get hurt by tussles or bites. Birds of prey, such as owls, hawks and even vultures, may attack small dogs in a yard. According to Pat Silvosky, director of the Milford Nature Center in Kansas, some birds can be territorial. While they might not view a dog as an easy meal, they could swoop down and attack to defend territory. The same may occur with other wild animals.
A dog-friendly yard may require a little effort to create, but it’s worth a little sweat equity to keep pups safe.

Gravesite Care When You Can’t Get There
Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend any services that offer gravesite cleaning and care? I recently visited my parent’s cemetery gravesite over Memorial Day weekend and found that their headstones were overtaken by weeds and moss and need to be cleaned. I live in a different state and can’t get back very often. Who can I call on to help me with this?
Long-Distance Linda
Dear Linda, Depending on where your parents are buried, there are a hodgepodge of places you can turn to for gravesite grooming, decorating and special care when you can’t get there. Here’s what you should know.
Gravesite Care
It’s important to know that as a general rule, most cemeteries, like the one your parents are buried in, only provide basic grounds maintenance like mowing the grass and trash pickup. Special gravesite care
and headstone cleaning is almost always up to the family. But for families who live a distance from their loved one’s burial place and can’t get back very often, what options are available?
A good place to start is to contact the cemetery staff where your parents are buried to see if they offer any special gravesite cleaning services or know of anyone who does. If not, try reaching out to some local funeral homes in the area to see if they can help or refer you.
If you don’t have any luck there, another option is to hire a gravesite care provider on your own. These are small or individually run businesses that provide services like plot maintenance including grass trimming and weeding, headstone cleaning and restoration, flower and wreath deliveries and more. And so you know the work was completed or the flowers were delivered, many companies will take pictures of the
gravesite and e-mail or text them to you.
There are literally hundreds of small businesses that provide gravesite care services in local communities or regions across the country. To find them, do a simple Google or Bing internet search, and type in something like “grave care services” or “cemetery headstone cleaning” plus your city or state. Or use an AI tool like Chat GPT or Gemini to do a search.
You can also seek help by contacting the local memorial society or funeral consumer alliance program near your parent’s gravesite – see Funerals.org/find-an-affiliate for contact information. These are volunteer groups that offer a wide range of information on local funeral and cremation providers, cemeteries and more.
The cost for most gravesite care services can range anywhere from $50
to over $250 for headstone cleaning and memorial restoration (depending on the job size), $50 to $200 for flower and wreath deliveries, and $30 to $80 for plot grooming. Special discounts for multiple gravesite services and visits may also exist.
Floral Services
If you’re interested in decorating your parent’s gravesite next Memorial Day with fresh cut flowers or live plants, another option is to call a local florist to see if they can make a delivery directly to their grave site.
Many florists will accommodate this request if you provide them the cemetery location and plot number, but you may not get a photo verifying the delivery.
